LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

CELEBRATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF WORKFORCE!

Congratulations to this year’s class of “20 Under 30” winners! You are some of the best and brightest young professionals in our region!

We’re proud of everything you have accomplished to this point in your young careers, and we see big things in your future. Michigan Works! West Central will be here to help you every step of the way.

We’d also like to take a moment to recognize those who were nominated this year but didn’t receive enough votes to appear in this publication. We want you to know you’re awesome! Keep up the great work and continue to do your best as your career moves forward!

This year’s “20 Under 30” publication features 20 impressive up-and-coming young professionals from all industry sectors, including healthcare, education, engineering, manufacturing, entrepreneurship and more! I’d like to take a quick look at a couple of this year’s winners who we’ve worked with in recent years.

First, I’d like to highlight Bradley Benzing, who you can read about on page 15. We’ve been working with Bradley’s employer, Hamtech Inc., for many years, and helped them get their CNC machinist operator USDOL Registered Apprenticeship program up and running. We also helped Hamtech apply for and receive a grant through the Going PRO Talent Fund in 2019, to train a new-hire apprentice.

Bradley was the first employee enrolled in Hamtech’s machinist apprenticeship program. We’ve watched him grow throughout the years as he completed his USDOL Registered Apprenticeship and earned his journeyworker certificate. To watch a success story video of Bradley’s progress, visit MWWC.org/USDOL.

Bradley, we are truly proud of all you have accomplished, and look forward to watching you continue to grow. Congratulations!

I’d also like to highlight Gabriela Brito-Burgos, who you can read about on

page 12. She came to us while in her final year in the nursing program at Ferris State University seeking help with tuition. We were able to help her successfully complete her degree on time and support her as she was able to obtain full-time employment at Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital.

She is a hard worker and the first member of her family to attend college. Her success has inspired her younger siblings to make the choice to attend college when their time comes.

Gabriela, we are proud of the example you have set for your younger siblings and now countless others who read this publication. We wish you well on your continued journey in healthcare! Congratulations!

At Michigan Works! West Central, it’s our job to help those looking to advance their careers get the training they need to move into a high-wage, long-term position. One of the ways we help prepare the workforce of tomorrow, today, is through our Young Adult Services.

We have several programs that can help our region’s young adults gain the skills necessary to succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. Let us help you obtain the education, training and experience you need to move

your career forward! Who knows? Maybe you’ll appear in the pages in a future edition of the “20 Under 30” publication.

If you are ready to work, we can help. We are looking for young adults who meet any of the below criteria:

• Age 14-24

• Getting ready to graduate from high school

• About to finish or start their GED

• A teen parent or in foster care

• Getting ready to enter the workforce

• Looking for your next step

Our mission is “To continually improve a workforce development system that produces a workforce with the required skills to attract, retain and expand business, and enhance our regional economy.” We are part of the statewide Michigan Works! system, and serve employers and job seekers in Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Newaygo, Oceana and Osceola counties. We exist to help employers find and retain qualified workers, and ensure that the local talent pool meets the needs of the employer.

The 20 names listed in this publication are only a small number of the thousands of young professionals in our region making their way in our small corner of Michigan. I hope to see their names in next year’s nominations.

Thank you to everyone who nominated someone this year, and to those who participated in the voting process. This year’s class of “20 Under 30” winners are very impressive, and we know they’ll do great things as their careers move forward! Congratulations!

Sincerely,

West Central

TOP 20 UNDER 30 OVERALL WINNERS

No. 1 Taylor Jutila

Mecosta County Parks

Operations Director

Age 25

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy being able to give the community and tourists, the opportunity for outdoor recreation, activities, and other events. It’s a very rewarding feeling to see the parks full of families making lifelong memories. It’s also not a typical desk job, I love that I get to be out in the field and outdoors. Some days, this job doesn’t really feel like “work” but more something that I get to be apart of.

How did you get into this field?

Fate or coincidence? I grew up visiting the Paris Fish Hatchery, 4-H Camp at the Family Group Camp of School Section Lake, and Boater’s Safety at Brower Park, so I was already very familiar with the Mecosta County Parks. When I found this job posting, I was still living in Grand Rapids working in Property Management and was itching to move back to my hometown. Right then, I knew this job was meant to bring me back home to do something I didn’t even know I would love so much.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Parks and Recreation isn’t always an industry people think about when going to college or applying for jobs, but it is such an essential industry to

give people the opportunity to get outside to support not only physical but mental health. It’s also way more than just camping or hiking trails, the field is endless where it can take you!

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

Communication with my staff! During the operating season, I am on-call 24/7, even on my days off. Communicating with my staff that I will be off work with limited access to my phone, is essential to getting my me time. However, even on my days off I still find myself in the parks hiking, kayaking, or camping with family.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

Always strive for more and never settle for good enough. When there’s a lot of work to be done, focus on doing one or two things well, rather than a bunch of things done half way.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

Anything outdoors! Especially kayaking, hiking, and even just relaxing outside with a good book.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

While a lot of my free time is spent volunteering hours at work, I also

help with events for Tools for His Teens. This is a newer organization that helps teens in rural communities gain social, religious, and real-world skills.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

The community relations and partnerships that are here, are unbeatable. I briefly lived in Grand Rapids and never really got a sense of being home or being apart of a community like I do in Mecosta County.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

Support for teachers working in our rural community schools.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

To me, it means being celebrated with other young entrepreneurs like myself. We have all worked so hard to be where we are at, at such a young age, and it can be inspiring to other young

No. 2 Megan Ecker

Huntey’s Clubhouse

School Age Director/

Assistant Meal Service Director

Age 20

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I am very grateful to be working for a corporation who centers their values around high-quality childcare for the families in our community. I am very thankful to be able to work hands on within the company at an administrative level to achieve this while also working in the school age program.

How did you get into this field?

I have always had a passion for children. When I was in high school, I was introduced to the company and dreamed of the day I turned 18 to work for Hunteys Clubhouse. Now I have worked for the company for 3 years and wouldn’t change it for anything.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

I would tell them that working in childcare is truly so rewarding. Working in childcare you have the greatest opportunity connect one on one with families and watch their children grow into little humans that will go off into society. We truly help shape the future generations that we to come.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

Within the past year I have

learned about how setting boundaries is so crucial for myself. Childcare can be a high stressed fast paced job, so ensuring that I am taking “me time” when I have the opportunity to is very important to me.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role models have taught me not give up when things in life become difficult. They have taught me to push through and continue to work hard and always look for the light at the end of the tunnel.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy baking and cooking as well as going on walks and reading a good book.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

I find our community beautiful. I love how we all as a community strive to come together to achieve the things that arise.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address? Homelessness. There has been only an increase of homelessness within the community. The mental and physical development of the children are at risk. I feel as though that if our community works together, we will be able to achieve this challenge within our

community.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

It means so much to me that I have received this award. I feel so honored to have even been nominated. It truly makes me feel appreciated and valued that I was given this opportunity.

What other professional achievements have you received?

I will be receiving my associate’s degree in child Devlopment in December of 2024.

What is your next career goal?

I plan on continuing to grow within Hunteys Clubhouse in more administrative roles and continue to bring high quality childcare to the communities we serve.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

I hope to inspire the next generation by showing them how our lives can truly change by making one decision. Before I joined Hunteys I didn’t have much passion in the things that I did. But now I am so passionate about my job and the other opportunities have come my way.

No. 3 Meghan Lockhart

Meg’s Pet Grooming LLC

Owner

Age 22

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy getting a wide variety of animals and breeds, getting to see people’s faces when they are taking home a freshly groomed dog, getting to spend all day with amazing animals!

How did you get into this field?

I always knew I wanted to work with animals. I went to college to be a vet tech, after getting into the program they sent me downstate. I lived there with my cousin but it was very hard for me to be away from my dog and my family. Vet tech was also not what I was thinking it was. It just wasn’t for me. So I decided to drop out and my dad and grandma both brought up grooming. I looked into it and took online classes and ended up loving it!

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Do it! We need groomers around here! It’s an amazing job that teaches you all about the characteristics and behaviors of animals! Yes it’s hard and it can be frustrating, but in the end it’s so worth it to see the owners face of excitement!

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

I keep a healthy balance by not working weekends, and I make sure to take holidays off to spend with my family! I used to work weekends at an old job and I felt like I missed out on everything, so I make sure to make time for my family and friends!

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

They have taught me to always be myself and always do my best. My best guidance to offer would be to take a step back when you get frustrated or overwhelmed. Look at everything you’ve accomplished in your life. It’s easy to think you aren’t far in life because there’s a few things you haven’t done. But when you look back at the things you have done, it’ll help you realize you’re doing great!

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

My hobbies are hunting, fishing, shopping, and spending time with my animals, family, friends, and boyfriend.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

Pine River Area Sports Organization, Leroy Razzasque Days, along with always sponsoring or donating to things around my community!

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Our area is unique because no matter where you go, you will always see somebody you know. And everyone is always so welcoming. I have lived here my entire life, so I may be biased but we live in the best community!

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address? Lack of available housing for people.

There’s lots of homeless roaming the streets because they have no money or nowhere to go. I wish there was a place for everybody to go, especially with the weather we get in Michigan!

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

It means so much for me to receive this award. I sometimes feel as if Im not always doing a great job and this really boosts my confidence more then I could ever explain! Thank you to all my clients and family that voted for me!!

What other professional achievements have you received?

CNA, Pioneer Group all area Readers Choice Awards

What is your next career goal?

To expand my business and open boarding for people that go out of town!

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals? Always do your best, no matter where or what you come from you can achieve anything you put your mind to! And always keep a close support system to help you out when you need it!

I also love to be creative and try new tactics to reach consumers.

Surrounded by lakes, forests, and the recreational benefits that rural West Michigan has to offer is what makes our area unique from other places I have lived.

Tristian Clark

Springfield Inc

Service Foreman / Truck Driver

Age 28

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I thoroughly enjoy being able to ‘explore’ and get paid to do so. My job has brought me from Detroit over to Kalamazoo, up to the Soo, and so many small towns in between. Places I would’ve never traveled to on my own, or even known they existed.

How did you get into this field?

I started with Springfield as a field technician. Around 2 or 3 years in, with Springfields support and assistance I went to Pinnacle Truck Driving School and got my Class A CDL. I began driving our dump trucks and hauling our equipment between jobsites. Once Springfield purchased a tractor and trailer we began hauling for large equipment rental outfits, private parties, and occasionally orchards.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Go for it. There are so many avenues a CDL holder can go. Construction, flatbed, heavy haul, dry van, reefer, straight axle, linework and many more all either local or over the road. Explore all the possibilities it could give you. Work hard, drive safe, and remember to pre-trip!

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

I choose to stay local. The

home time it allows is what I prefer. I leave work at the door when I get home, and ensure the time I am home is quality. Earn your PTO and use it. Being burnt out doesn’t help you or your company.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

That time to process or think and elegance gets you further than you’d think. When you go into conversations, at least have an idea what it is you’d like to hear. Have patience with yourself, coupled with high but realistic expectations. And that no one hears what you don’t say. Communicate.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I like to spend my spare time outdoors. Fishing, riding quads, or just enjoying the day pretending to be productive in my barn.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

Our company participates in the Adopt a Highway program. And with the large amount of time I spent in the Grand Traverse area, I’ve spent a lot of time at The Rock of Kingsley, which is a great youth center for the area.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

My favorite thing about the area is that you don’t have to travel far to find nature.

Second would be the vast amount of job opportunities.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address? I think a large problem that seems is wide spread, a lot further than just our area would be affordable housing options.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

It’s nice to know that hard work and dedication doesn’t get overlooked.

What is your next career goal?

I’m working on increasing my value to the company with knowledge and certifications.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals? It all depends on what motivates them. When I started at Springfield, my driver was money. And there’s plenty of it in the trades. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to value my home time a bit more, and I’ve been able to have a work life balance that I enjoy. The trades are a place where your work ethic and knowledge are recognized and rewarded. It really is a great way to build the future you want, if you’re willing to put in the work.

The best part about my job is the people I get to meet. Everyone has a story and I have the opportunity everyday to listen and learn from others. Also, financial planning can be very complicated, but I enjoy building plans and providing comfort to my clients.

This career gives you the opportunity to help others. People rely on us to be there for them through their best and their worst days, which is an honor.

I try to disconnect from work once I get home. My wife and I will take our dog for a walk, then find ourselves working out. On the weekends we travel often to see family and friends.

Do what you say you are going to do and treat people the way you would like to be

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I moved to the Big Rapids area in 2018 and since then I was a part of the Big Rapids Jaycees and the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Our area is unique due to its tight-knit community. People are willing to help each other and lend a hand when it is needed, which makes Big Rapids a great place to live.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

The most important challenge our community needs to address is retaining our youth in the area. Too often young graduates leave for any number of reasons, and it is vital to determine how to keep them a part of our community.

I hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals by sharing my passion for personal finance. Finding a career path that is fulfilling makes a big difference, and by sharing my joy for financial advising I hope to show the importance of pursuing your goals. Work does not feel like work when you wake up knowing you get to do what you enjoy.

TOP 20 UNDER 30 OVERALL WINNERS No. 8 Gabriela Brito-Burgos

Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital

Registered Nurse on an ICU step down floor

Age 22

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy my job because everyday is different. Some days are chaotic and make the 12 hours go by fast. Some days are less busy and I am able to provide my patients with more personalized care. Meaning I can give them a full bath or keep them company when they can’t sleep. No two days are identical because you have a variety of patients and conditions to assess and care for. Additionally, the learning never stops. I am always learning a new skill, medication, or condition. It’s a new day everyday.

How did you get into this field?

I got into the nursing field after seeing the impact nurses had on patient experiences. They are the one constantly assessing the patient and reporting changes. My sister was in the hospital frequently and I was so grateful for the things they did to help comfort her during hard times. It didn’t matter if it was small like bringing a warm blanket or something bigger like advocating for her well being. I knew then I wanted to be a nurse and comfort/advocate for patients too.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

I would tell them that the nursing field is a rewarding experience. The education requirements can be tough but they are worth the degree. I met some of my best friends in nursing school and it’s nice being able to relate to someone who understands just how vigorous the program can be. Not to mention the nursing field is so diverse there are so many specialties. If one doesn’t work out you can always try another until you find the perfect fit.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life? I try to keep a healthy work life balance by taking time each day to myself. Whether that be running or watching my favorite cooking show Chopped. Either of these activities help take my mind off whatever happened during my shift. Some days are rough in healthcare so finding something to take my mind off of work is so important for me.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role models are my parents Javier & Rosalia. They taught me to be resilient and pursue my dreams. I come from an immigrant household and graduating college was an accomplishment in itself. I am the first in my family to graduate

with a bachelor’s degree. And to be able to call myself a registered nurse is just special. They have instilled in me resilience through their work ethic. No matter how physically demanding their jobs were they kept going because it meant I could keep going to college

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family especially the summer cookouts. I also enjoy running, playing overly competitive tennis with my significant other, and watching sunsets on the beach.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

While in school, I volunteered at the Ferris Wellness clinic. It was catered towards low income diabetic patients in the Mecosta County. I was able to check lipid levels and A1C blood sugars. As well as connect patients with resources in the area like a free voucher to the dental clinic on campus at Ferris. I have not done volunteering since then but I hope to find something similar closer to home.

There was a time in my life when I needed the help and support of a social worker. I wanted to give to others as that person gave to me. So when I was applying for college, social work just felt like the perfect fit.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Learn as much as you can from everywhere you can. There is wisdom and knowledge to be gained from everything from the most menial tasks to the duties most associated with the job. Keep your mind open to learning and understanding, but make sure to take care of yourself. It’s hard work!

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

Disconnecting after work hours and spending time on the things I enjoy outside of the office. Focusing on myself during my off time helps me to be better when on the clock, so self care is of the utmost importance for me.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

I would like to offer the wisdom that has been offered to me: you can still have fun

while serving others; it’s important to go with the flow rather than fighting the tides; and some things don’t require even half the seriousness that we give them.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy many creative endeavors. Music has been a fixture in my life. Like many others, I have comfort TV shows that I rotate through. My greatest joy, however, comes from pestering my closest friends and family.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

Because Angels of Action provides many volunteer opportunities to the community, I experience a lot through those who give their time to us to help those around us. I also frequent many community events on behalf of Angels of Action outside of work.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Big Rapids feels like a big city and a small town all rolled into one. There are many resources one might not find in a smaller town, but the businesses and agencies that serve here ensure that there is a sense of community between us all.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

My team at Angels of Action and I work to address this everyday, feeding hungry kids. Food insecurity is a prevalent issue in our community, one that we are trying to battle every day.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

Receiving this award means that my work in the community is truly making an impact; it is important, and my efforts are not going unnoticed.

What other professional achievements have you received?

As a recent graduate of Ferris State University (Go Class of 2023!) and a fully fledge member of the Angels of Action team, this is the first professional achievement I have received. While I have accepted awards on behalf of Angels of Action, this is my first personal recognition. The first of many, I hope!

What is your next career goal?

The goal I was to achieve has always remained the same: making a difference in the lives of those who need it. That goal is never-ending, but as long as I keep helping others, I’ll be doing what I’ve dreamed of doing from the very beginning.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals? I hope to inspire the next generation by sharing my experiences honestly. If I can do it, they can too!

Newaygo County Resident Receives Impact Award

LANSING – Success for Brandon Nowak came later in life than expected. In his mid30s, Brandon Nowak came to the very hard realization his life was not where he wanted it to be. He never completed his high school education, had limited skills and was incarcerated for 18 months.

“Everything that’s happened to me, I’ve done to myself. I always remember that,” Brandon said. “I’m doing what I’m supposed to do, I just did it later on in life. … I’m here because I made my bed, but places like Michigan Works! West Central, they give you a second chance.”

After exiting incarceration, Brandon’s parole officer referred him to Michigan Works! West Central. Working with a Talent Specialist, he was able to set short-term and realistic goals. Earning his GED was the first on the list. Through adult-education provider Quest High School, which co-located in three of Michigan Works! West Central’s six service centers, he was able to finish his high school education.

“I studied every night; I really wanted to get it done as quickly as possible,” Brandon said. “The program fit with my schedule. They

would give me packets to study, which made it a lot easier. … After learning I passed, I was excited, but still focused on what I had to do next. So, I couldn’t get too excited because I wasn’t at my end goal.”

Michigan Work! West Central enrolled Brandon into WIOA Adult and MiLEAP programs, which were able to pay for training at FCG Truck Driver Training in Byron Center. Within six weeks, he earned his Class-A commercial driver’s license (CDL), achieving his next goal.

“Brandon, being a hard worker and fast learner, was an excellent candidate for the CDL truck driver training program. It was obvious that he wanted success,” said Bill Baareman, owner of FCG Truck Driver Training. “Partnering with Michigan Works! West Central is the perfect match for a new and challenging career path in a field that’s in high demand. This partnership is opening new doors and opportunities for anyone with a desire to obtain a Michigan CDL.”

It didn’t take long for Brandon to reach his final goal of obtaining a job as a fulltime over-the-road driver. He was hired at Coopersville-based Foreway Transportation

in July 2023, and began driving across the U.S. His personal outlook is miles away from where he was just over a year ago.

“My life has changed quite a bit. I’ve got a new outlook on everything. I’m healthier and I’ve got a new set of goals. (My life) is nothing like it was five years ago,” Brandon said. “I never thought I’d go to prison, but I did, and that’s what needed to happen in my life to get me on the right path. … The only reason I was able to do all of this is because I was realistic about little goals. Michigan Works! makes it really easy. I was surprised at how involved they were, and I never felt like I was judged while I was there. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today and as happy as I am, without Michigan Works! I’m very grateful for this place.”

Michigan Works! West Central is proud of Brandon’s accomplishments, so far.

“We see participants from all walks of life come into our service centers. Brandon came into our Newaygo service center after 18 months of incarceration with the motivation to turn his life around. He set several shortSee

I get to create interesting new things everyday.

How did you get into this field?

When I was in high school, we toured the Mecosta-Osceola Career Center and I was interested in Innovative Engineering Program. I attended there beginning with my junior year, and half way through my senior year. I did a coop with Hamtech.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

This is a great career if you are willing to learn new and exciting things. Machinists in the United States are trying to make things efficient, and help to provide American jobs instead of moving things overseas. Manufacturing businesses effect so many things.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

I make sure I keep my work at work, and not bring it home.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

If you put the time and have patience, you will become good at your craft.

What are some hobbies you enjoy? Hunting and fishing

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

I like that the area allows for me to improve my abilities, but also has the resources to pursue my hobbies. We are lucky to have Mecosta-Osceola Career Center and Ferris State University in our area.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

We need more people to explore the manufacturing side of our workforce.

award. It means a lot to be recognized for all the hard work I’ve put into honing my craft.

What other professional achievements have you received?

A four-year CNC apprenticeship through Hamtech.

What is your next career goal? Master my craft.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

By letting them know that the manufacturing industry in our area is growing and there are so many opportunities out there for anyone to take advantage of. If we don’t do it here, they’ll do it somewhere else and we want to keep the jobs local.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Finding new ways to create affordable solutions for a client’s home. Taking on a challenge and having it come through even better then expected thanks to my amazing team.

How did you get into this field?

Working on my future father in law’s basement bathroom and discovering the task was fun and rewarding. Also, working with my Uncle Jon and developing a passion for building through his love for fine craftsmanship and a job well done.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Being in construction can be difficult, but you can strive for dignity in your work and take pride in a job well done. Give it your all & do your best, stick to your standards no matter what obstacles you face.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

This is a bit tricky. My wife and I started our business in the middle of starting a family, we do

everything together, our kids come to work with us and we work while at home. This is a family business where we all do life together. Owning a business, you can’t really find a true balance.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others? They have taught me that it’s OK to ask for help, it’s OK not to know everything. I would say if you want to be successful to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy raising cattle, fishing, reading and traveling with my wife.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

We currently serve at the homeless shelter every 2 weeks; our crew brings in a hot meal and serves it to the shelter. I enjoy serving in my church as well.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

I was born and raised here so this question may not apply well to me. I’ve traveled quite a bit over the years and although we’ve seen

some amazing places, this will always be home.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

In my opinion we need to address affordable housing and how to make that happen.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

I’m not familiar with this particular award, but I feel honored.

What other professional achievements have you received?

Future 5 award through the Ludington Daily News. Men in Business Award

What is your next career goal?

Continue to grow and thrive in the construction industry.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the variety and the challenge of finding and capitalizing on unique investment opportunities. Every day presents a new adventure, whether it’s negotiating a deal, renovating a property, or analyzing market data. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes from transforming properties and helping communities grow. Additionally, the flexibility and autonomy in my role.

How did you get into this field?

After a couple of years in college, I realized it wasn’t the path I wanted to pursue. I wanted to work on building something of my own. I’ve always had a natural knack for connecting with people and negotiating, and real estate provided the perfect opportunity to develop those skills into a career.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Be prepared for a dynamic environment that requires persistence, continuous learning, and passion. Building strong relationships and networking are crucial. Start small and scale up gradually, as every experience is valuable. Expect to step outside your comfort zone often, as the industry demands

adaptability to new challenges. Stay informed about market trends and always strive to provide value to your clients and community.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life? When starting in this industry, there isn’t much balance. It might take until your third or fourth year to find it. Success demands hard work, and sometimes we’re showing property’s at 7 PM, writing offers at 10 PM, or working the holiday weekend. This is a business of scaling, and balance improves as profits allow you to bring on support. Until then, it’s about dedication and managing your time as effectively as possible.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My mentors have taught me to be steadfast in my beliefs, to persevere, and to act with integrity. They emphasized the importance of building strong relationships and the value of continuous learning. Their guidance has helped me navigate the challenges of the industry and stay focused on my goals. To others, I would advise having a clear understanding of who you are, where you come from, and who you aspire to be. Stay true to your principles, and success will naturally follow.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

My main hobby is work, but outside of that, I love cycling. I frequently take on endurance rides, often covering over 100 miles. Cycling not only helps me stay fit but also provides a great way to clear my mind and recharge.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I am proud to serve as the 100thyear president of the Rotary Club of Big Rapids, and I am honored to be the youngest president in the club’s history. Through Rotary, I engage in community service projects like organizing fundraisers, participating in clean-up efforts, and supporting youth programs. Volunteering with Rotary allows me to give back, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to the betterment of our community.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

What do you enjoy most about your job?

One of the best parts of my job is getting to form relationships with many groups of students. From these relationships, I’m able to be an integral part of growing up and help students navigate some of the most formative years of their lives!

How did you get into this field?

I have always enjoyed working with children. From childcare to tutoring, and now teaching, watching children grow academically and socially has been extemely rewarding. I began my college adventures focused in healthcare, but after a year and a half exploring that field, I concluded that my true passion was working with children. Once earning my bachelor’s in Elementary Education and teaching for a few years, I then worked and completed my Master’s of Reading and Literacy K-12 degree.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

For anyone thinking about going into education, I would highly recommend getting involved as much as possible to get some handson experience in the classroom. There are many opportunities to volunteer in schools, as well as substitute teaching! Putting one’s self into real-life education

scenarios is the best way to prepare for a career in education at any level.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

It can be tricky to balance work and personal life, esspecially for a career that takes a lot of dedication emotionally. Setting boundaries for myself as well as realistic expectations has been what I have found to be the most helpful when balancing these pieces of my life. Creating positive relationships with students, as well as coworkers, also allows for this balance to happen in a healthy way.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

I am lucky enough to work with some other educators that contiue to be my role models, as well as my friends. These people have taught me the importance of giving grace to others, as well as myself. These people have also shown me healthy ways to make connections to students, their homes, as well as other professionals in education. The largest piece of guidance I would give to others is to be passionate and bought-in, and show the students that you care and value them as people.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

Some of the hobbies that I enjoy are traveling, spending time with my family, and finding new places to get a sweet treat! Recently becoming a mother, I have found that many of the things I like to do involve my baby!

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I am currently not volunteering in the community, but I would be interested in starting to volunteer for a literacy organization!

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Something that makes Big Rapids unique is the sense of community. I feel very supported in this community, and I also feel as though the students are cared for by many people outside of the school system.

1,417 Ninth Graders Enjoy Hands-On Career Exploration at MiCareerQuest West Central

More than 1,400 students from 20 high schools across the region took part in the annual MiCareerQuest West Central event on April 23. The event, organized by Michigan Works! West Central, provides area ninth graders the opportunity to meet and speak with local industry professionals in high-demand careers.

A total of 71 local and regional employers, and training providers participated in the event, which was held inside Wink Arena at Ferris State University. Employers on-site were representing the healthcare and manufacturing sectors, as well as in-demand careers such as skilled trades, finance, first responders, IT and more. Training providers like Ferris, West Shore Community College and local career-technical education providers also were at the event highlighting their programs.

“MiCareerQuest provides all ninth-grade students from across our region with access to interactive exhibits, hands-on activities and gives them the opportunity to talk with industry experts,” said Shelly Keene, Executive Director at Michigan Works! West Central. “We invite ninth graders specifically so they can adjust their high-school ed-

ucation path if one of the careers featured at MiCareerQuest sparks their interest. For example, if a student really enjoyed one of the virtual welders, they can then plan to enroll in the welding program at their local CTE provider, and maybe further their education at community college or university. We’re hoping to ignite their career curiosities and get them thinking about what opportunities they will pursue after high school.”

Platinum event sponsors for this year’s MiCareerQuest West Central were Corewell Health Big Rapids Hospital, Ferris State University’s Welding Engineering Technology and the West Michigan Plumbers, Fitters & Service Trades Local 174.

“My favorite part about today has been seeing the interactions with kids. Some kind of come up a little bit shy, but then I think we get them trying our hands-on activity, and they really start to open up. They’re having fun,” said Jessica O’Neal, Nurse Manager for Surgical Services at Corewell Health. “I think it’s important for them to know there are so many different areas you can work in healthcare, nursing and other areas as well.”

Michigan Works! West Central hosted its first-ever MiCareerQuest West Central event in 2020, prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was held virtually for two years during the pandemic and returned to in-person in 2023. In the first five years of MiCareerQuest West Central, organizers estimate more than 9,500 students from across its six-county region have had the opportunity to learn about high-demand career paths available locally.

“MiCareerQuest is the largest event we organize. It would not be possible without our dedicated staff, volunteers and employers,” said Jonathan Eppley, Communication and Marketing Manager for Michigan Works! West Central. “There is a lot to coordinate to make MiCareerQuest happen each year, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see the excitement on students’ faces when they find something that sparks their interest. The goal of this event is to expose the next generation of workforce to the wide variety of high-wage, high-demand career opportunities available in our region.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love that I get to help people transform their views on themselves and boost their self-confidence.

How did you get into this field?

Initially, I wanted to go to art school, but I’m not very tech savvy, but still wanted something art related. The more I thought about it the more I thought hair, nail, skin is all in art and I decided to go to beauty school. I went through schooling, and I just absolutely fell in love with the before and after transformations the way my clients came from being either down on themselves or hard on themselves to leaving and just feeling like the best most beautiful, most vibrant person.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

I would say go for it, there’s a lot of hardships in our industry. It is a tough industry. Most people don’t make it past two or three years but if you have the passion for it, you have the drive, if you really want to make a difference you can and will be successful. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice if you need.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

I try and keep a pretty strict schedule where I have time set aside for work, and I have time set aside for home. The nice thing is my family is very involved in the

business and they do spend a lot of time helping me with it which makes it easier to do both, but I still like to have a degree of separation.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

My role models have taught me to never give up you know keep pushing keep getting the education, but most importantly, just treat your employees treat your clients your coworkers the way that you would want to be treated, take care of each other like family, grow where you can and just try and be the best person you can be.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

Most of my time is either spent at work or spending time with my family and my daughter. We like to spend time outside. We like to go swimming and we like to play. She will be one in July and she’s pretty much my only hobby at this point.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

Currently I don’t actively volunteer but we are talking to local organizations about future events. We do try and sponsor local school and kid outings when we can as well.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

The small-town community is truly the heart of our business and connection to

others. It’s amazing to see the kindness and effort people put towards each other.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

I would say education as far as what we can do to improve recycling, clean products, being efficient, using smart energy. There are so many opportunities to help the environment and help each other and I feel like there’s just not a lot of knowledge on what we can do. We focus on being a cruelty, free, vegan, and sustainably based spa. We just want to do our part to help the environment, educator clients, and be good human beings.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

It is one of the biggest honors I’ve received to be nominated for this it’s a recognition of all the hard work and effort I’ve put into becoming and growing as a business owner, building a team, and growing as a support and pillar in our community. I just want to make a difference in people’s lives and help where I can.

Managing Partner / Real Estate Advisor

Age 27

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love that every day brings new challenges and a new set of objectives. I love the ability to combine my real estate advisory business (hospitality & retail) which I’ve been able to pair with my campground management business as we’ve grown from one park and one part time employee to three parks and six full time employees and close to two dozen part time / seasonal workers.

How did you get into this field?

I started in property management during the day while working a waiting job in the afternoon at a local retirement home while in high school, interacting with dozens of self-made real estate & contracting business owners. After graduating, I found a job working for a real estate developer doing property management & marketing learning a great deal about the ongoing business of owning and managing real estate. After a few failed entrepreneurial pursuits, I got my brokerage license in 2018 at 20.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. You

have to have an unrelenting in your pursuit of getting deals done. I got into the campground business after working with a client who had sold their business and we met via a cold call from another property they owned. We have yet to transact a deal after hundreds of hours analyzing dozens of deals over a few years but provided me the basis for launching my own business when River Rock Campground became available.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

Working with people that I enjoy being around. There’s a lot of time spent in both my businesses so I have developed great friendships and relationships with countless people. Unplugging and getting in nature helps as does a good sweat from a hard workout. Having a supportive family is really helpful.

Discipline comes in many forms but successful people are on time, follow up, and offer solutions to problems. Having a network of people who you can call for advice and feedback is vital. Not everyone is going to agree with you but balanced feedback

provides solid clarity to assess pros / cons of decisions. Make mistakes, learn from them, and move on.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

Golfing and fishing are my go to activities if it’s not traveling to visit friends or at home finding a new recipe to cook.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I previously was on the youth advisory board for Kids Food Basket and spent several years coaching youth basketball and umpiring baseball. Presently am not involved in any community organizations. No. 17 Lucas Harris

UHY LLP

Senior Staff Accountant

Age 26

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The most enjoying part of my role as an Audit Senior at UHY is the puzzle solving. In our work, we have to put together various pieces of financial information together to form the ultimate picture in order to provide reasonable assurance over our client’s financial statements.

How did you get into this field?

I got into this field by happenstance. I didn’t even know what an Accountants job did or what auditing was when I got to college at Ferris State University. I was very good at math and it just seemed like the right path for me to take.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

I would first off say that there is always a need for Accountants anywhere you look. The job offers many challenges and many learning opportunities, all molding and shaping your career path, whether it is staying in accounting or expanding your career path.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

To keep a healthy balance, I try to maintain a “no work talk policy” at home. This allows me to disconnect and fully have time to relax and recharge. Of course, with being a CPA, it comes with busier times during the year and I have a full understanding that during busy season, I will be working longer hours, however I realized that I need to commit

at least 2 hours a day of technology free meals and making sure I am getting my steps in.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

Role models have taught me to embrace the many challenges that life gives us. Similarly the guidance I’d share is that the workday doesn’t always go as planned so bringing positivity to yourself and your team can boost everyone’s moral, which in turn helps to get through those challenges a little better and to allow a better headspace to learn and adapt to the difficulties.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy running, cycling, camping, traveling and most of all spending time outdoor with friends and family.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

With only being back in Michigan since the end of last year and transitioning jobs, I haven’t had the opportunity to start getting involved in our local community. While I was living in Salt Lake City, Utah, the company that I worked for was involved in the Utah Food Bank and Salt Lake City Park clean up days and I volunteered for different events that were held in the city.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

Our area in West Michigan is unique to

other places I have lived (Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Salt Lake City) because of the people and being friendly. People treat others with respect, kindness and with a neighborly love that is really only found in the Midwest and in Northern Michigan.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

There are so many challenges these days in all communities alike, especially affordable housing.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

I am sure there are more people that are more deserving of this award, but I do very much appreciate being selected and am honored to receive this award. Hopefully with me receiving this award, it will help other young adults with career decision making with choosing the accounting field and that they are aware that you can be from a small community, get a great local college degree and experience and get a great job within the community.

Prevent 2 Protect - Regional Case Manager

Age 26

What do you enjoy most about your job?

My favorite part of my job is working with students and helping them reach their goals. I love helping students and families navigate systems and address their individual needs by checking in with them on a weekly basis. Each day is unique and different, as I cover 9 school districts. I couldn’t do this without the support and collaboration with my team, which I am so thankful for.

How did you get into this field?

Growing up with a mom as a teacher I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps and work in education. After earning my Bachelors degree in Sociology from Albion College, I pursued a Masters and Specialist degree in School and Community Psychology. I loved being a school psychologist, but when this position was created I felt it was my calling to help the highest risk adolescents in our community. I utilize the skills I learned as a school psychologist in my position as a regional case manager.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

If you enjoy working with kids and want to make a difference in their lives then this is such a rewarding and fun career.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

Outside of work I make sure to take time for myself and workout or spend time outdoors, which not only helps me physically but also mentally. I like to spend time with friends and family. Another boundary I learned early in my career is to turn off my work phone and emails after work hours.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

I am blessed to have had some of the best mentors and role models who have helped shape the person I am today. I learned early intervention is key, data drives decisions, utilize your calendar, and team collaboration is crucial. I also learned to never give up your dreams no matter how tough life gets, always be kind and compassionate, be a good listener, and always assume positive intent.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

I enjoy spending time with my fiancé, family, friends, and my dogs. I love spending time outdoors, including camping, hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, and chasing sunsets.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

When I’m not coaching, I volunteer as a timer at swim meets.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived? Northern Michigan is the best place

to live. We have the best beaches and outdoor activities. Besides that, it is unique because of our strong sense of community.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address? One of the barriers that our families face in this rural area is lack of affordable housing and transportation.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

I am honored and so thankful to have received this award!

Horizon Bank - Big Rapids

Universal Banker

Age 22

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The most enjoyable part of my job is the community that I serve. Thanks to my job I have been afforded many opportunities over the past years to better get to know the people that make up this community. Either through services offered by the bank or volunteer opportunities, I am never disappointed when I am able to connect with the people who make our community so special.

How did you get into this field?

I originally applied for a bank teller position with no banking experience in my work history. At the time I had recently changed my college major to business, with no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to gain that experience and spent the next two years as a teller; learning the ins and outs of banking. Last November I was promoted to Universal Banker and have been able to continue growing and developing my skills in my new position.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a career in your industry?

To someone considering a career in banking I would say, there is so much more to this work than numbers. For so many people, their bank and the relationships they have with the people who work there mean more than we might imagine. Customers put their trust in you when seeking services or advice about finances and needs to be taken seriously. If you have a heart for

service, this career will suit you well.

How do you keep a healthy balance between your work and personal life?

This has been one of the hardest parts of transitioning into an office position. My greatest tool has been keeping a very organized agenda which allows me to manage my time better. By mapping out my weeks ahead of time I am able to keep myself from taking on too much or neglecting my need for personal time. Another key factor in this has been my incredible team at the Big Rapids branch who have supported me perusing my education and having a personal life while working full time.

What have your role models taught you, and what guidance do you or would you offer to others?

The most important thing that my role models have taught me is that nothing is unattainable when I truly dedicate myself to achieving it. This is something that continues to reign true with each new challenge that I face both personally and professionally. To others I would offer this same sentiment, your path may have a few additional challenges along the way, but it will only make achieving your goals that much more rewarding.

What are some hobbies you enjoy?

If I am not at work, you can usually find me in the gym, I enjoy weightlifting and strength training, but more recently I have been teaching myself calisthenics. I also try

to get together with friends for a hike or a game of pickleball whenever possible. If the weather forces me inside, I love to crochet gifts for my loved ones or make jewelry such as earrings and necklaces. Each day I try to devote some time for a brief bible study as well. I call this my pocket of peace for the day.

What community organizations do you volunteer at?

I volunteer as a cheerleading coach for Reed City Rocket Cheerleading. This will be my seventh season coaching. Over the years, participation has more than doubled from when I took over as head coach and I take so much pride in these teams. In addition to coaching, I have volunteered with Angels of Action, Project Starburst, Cran-Hill Ranch, and The Salvation Army, Big Rapids Pride, Gifts for Kids and the Mecosta County Fair.

What makes our area unique from other places you have lived?

What makes this area unique is the history here, and the significance of this place to so many people. It is a rare day that I go to the grocery store or gas station without bumping into someone I know and sparking a conversation, which I adore. The

I have lived in west Michigan a majority of my life and something that always stands out to me is the nature surrounding us. From the beaches to nature parks and rail trails. I know not all cities are lucky enough to have beautiful views. So I am grateful that I live in an area with multiple beaches and parks.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

I think the most important challenge our community needs to address is the access to primary care. A lot of times people don’t come in for yearly check ups because it can be costly. Or the lack of providers creates a long waitlist for patients. This can create debt for them

in the long run when they wait too long to be seen. The lack of financial support and provider availability can make it a challenge to prioritize primary care. But is so important to detect early illness

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

This award creates a duty for me to uphold. One which entails inspiring the youth and letting them know that they can accomplish whatever they want regardless of age.

What other professional achievements have you received?

I have been both stroke and advanced cardiac life support certified. Meaning I can provide care to patients who require higher acuity care due to their diagnosis. It can be scary at times but knowing you have a team full of experienced health professionals helps put your mind at

focus during high stress situations.

What is your next career goal?

I hope to eventually become an intensive care nurse. In the meantime I am working to gain experience and become more comfortable with nursing skills. I look at the skills ICU nurses have and aspire to be as confident in my skills.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

I hope to inspire the next generation by showing them the importance of the nursing profession in the healthcare environment. Nurses do more than give medications and immunizations. We have the privilege of comforting patients during uncertain times and advocate for their wellbeing. We get to see patients recover from surgery and gain strength to move forward.

community needs to address in terms of my career field is early literacy for children. While Big Rapids Public Schools works hard to get books into the hands of children, starting children with books and literacy before school age can help enrich children and introduce them to new vocabulary before getting into a classroom. This also would help families build strong relationships by spending quality time together with a book!

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

I feel very honored to be recognized for this award! I have a strong passion for my career and love the opportinity to share more information on this with anyone willing to listen!

What other professional achievements have you received?

Riverview Elementary was ranked #32

in the state for our state testing scores for the 2023 school year! Riverview was also recognized as a Literacy Leader Award School by TalentFirst!

What is your next career goal?

My next career goal is to continue working with students to help them grow. Working with others in the school, I would like to continue to see Riverview succeed and recieve the honors that the students earn for our school!

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals? I hope that the next generation of young professionals can see how much they matter, and how much they can make a difference. The profession of teaching is a difficult job. However, with passion and a true desire to make a positive impact, someone going into education can make a lasting difference in the lives of many.

Within my prior position and company, I was promoted to Senior Staff Accountant after just one year of employment. Since I have only been at UHY for just a month or so, I don’t have any new achievements yet with my new company.

What is your next career goal?

I am planning on starting the Certified Government Financial Manager certification, which is a professional certification awarded by the AGA, which is Advance. Grow. Accelerate. Association.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

There are so many ways to answer this question. For me it is leading by example, whether it is in my professional career or in my personal life. Professionally it can be helping other through their struggles by mentoring them and understanding that at one time I was that “new staff person” and needed some additional mentoring and help. Patience, understanding and being empathetic in all things that life can throw your way will inspire positive changes, not only in myself but others as well.

pace of life feels slower here, people stop one another in the street to say hello. In my experience, it’s the close knit, small town feeling that makes our area so unique.

What is the most important challenge that our community needs to address?

Currently, the most important challenge facing our community is the increasing homeless population. Unfortunately, more and more people are either homeless or facing homelessness due to financial instability.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

To receive this award is truly an honor, to even be nominated means more than I can express. When I decided to transition into completing my degree online, I knew that I would be giving up my ‘traditional college experience’ in the name of getting a jump start on my career. I have never once regretted this decision or had to debate for a moment what was best for me. To receive an award like this is greater reassurance that I am exactly where I am meant to be, and others can see this too.

What other professional achievements have you received?

My promotion to Universal Banker is one of

my favorite achievements to date, this has been such a fruitful experience for me as I continue to learn and grow professionally each day. In addition to this I have received several recognitions over my past three years with Horizon. More recently I was invited to share my experience and journey to a group of High School students considering the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program.

What is your next career goal?

My next career goal is to transition into commercial lending over the next few years. I have enjoyed my time in retail so much and will continue building customer relationships just the same. Commercial lending would pose many new and exciting challenges for me professionally while still allowing me to be involved at my branch and go beyond for my customers.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

My hope is that I can inspire the next generation of young professionals by offering my guidance and advice. I have a long journey ahead of me professionally, but I also understand the importance of mentorship when applicable. If ever someone seeks my assistance or advice, I try not only to help them but to reassure them that they have a team behind them for support should the need arise.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of young professionals?

I did not take a traditional path to find my success and would encourage more of the next generation to do things that are uncomfortable - take the job you have no idea what you’re doing; go on the vacation you don’t think is possible; start the goal you have in the back of your mind now.
