Sebewaing gears up for Spirit of Christmas Plenty of activities scheduled for Nov. 23 By Robert Creenan Tribune Staff Writer SEBEWAING — For those looking to kickstart their holiday experience, look no further than Sebewaing’s Spirit of Christmas Festival. The festival will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 23, with events, activities, and vendors all across the village to get people in the Christmas spirit. “This is a great opportunity to come out and enjoy the day in Sebewaing with a
Christmas parade, vendors for your early Christmas shopping, food truck, and local businesses with specials and drawings,” said Julie Epperson, one of the event organizers, “(There are) several events for the kids and don’t forget Santa will be there.” The festival starts off with the Christmas Parade at 10:30 a.m., starting from the fire department heading south on Center Street, turning left on Main Street, then making a right on Third Street before continued on page 3

continued from page 2 ending at Sebewaing Village Park. The parade will feature Frosty the Snowman, floats from local businesses, and Santa Claus in a horse-drawn carriage. The festival of trees runs from Nov. 12 to Nov. 23 at the showroom at Moore Shoreline Chevrolet and Buick, with each tree decorated by a different local business and raffled off on Nov. 23. Tickets are worth $1 and buyers can get an additional ticket with the donation on a non-perishable food item. Proceeds from the festival of trees go toward funding beautification programs and Frosty’s workshop, located at the dealership, where kids can make Christmas crafts and meet Frosty the Snowman. Kids are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters from Christmas specials and movies for an Enchanted Winter event with photo opportunities. The Country Motorsports pro snowmobiling team will appear and people can talk to the crew and drivers and take pictures with them. The Spirit of Christmas will also feature free horse carriage rides, food venders in front of the Moore Shoreline dealership, and vendors in the township hall, Medallion Village, and the Sebewaing Library. Local businesses like Boxwood Market and Design Warehouse, Lemon and Laura, and Best Health Naturopathy and Therapeutic Massage will have open houses, with the Sebewaing Historical Society opening its Liken House museum and barn. The Immanuel Lutheran Church will host a chili cookoff, were people can vote on who has the best chili in town, with the proceeds going toward the Christ the King school’s heating system. The community tree lighting will take place at 6 p.m. at the village park, with members of the USA Lions providing concessions, bonfires, live music, and Santa Claus appearing for pictures from 5 to 8 p.m.

Pat Kellerman Memorial How to create Turkey Trot enters 38th year a durable Race in honor of local fitness advocate gingerbread house set for Nov. 23 By Eric Rutter Tribune Staff Writer BAD AXE — This year, the Thumb Run Abouts group is once again hosting a Turkey Troy 5K in memory of race founder Pat Kellerman. “Pat felt that all people should be out running or walking for their health,” race organizer Lee Kahler said. “She traveled the world doing both running and biking.” Kellerman, who passed away in 2006, was an avid runner who founded the Turkey Trot and the Thumb Run Abouts group. After Kellerman’s death, Thumb Run Abouts worked to extend her legacy, combining her passion for fitness with several fall-themed items that are staples of the Thanksgiving holiday. “We’re an old group,” race organizer Lee Kahler said. “We were founded by Pat and we just kept the tradition going. What we do is, one of Pat’s favorites things was the Walk for Warmth. Every year, much of the money that we make from this race goes to the Walk for Warmth.” Thumb Run Abouts also contributes to local track and cross country teams as

The first-place finisher in each division will receive a frozen turkey, while second place earns pumpkin pies and third place nets a half gallon of apple cider. In the race, there are 12 male and 12 female division, and each division receives first-throughthird place prizes. Additionally, Thumb Run Abouts holds a drawing to receive a free pair of shoes for race participants.
Gingerbread cookies and houses are one of the many symbols of the holiday season, alongside Christmas trees and twinkling lights. In fact, few confections symbolize the holidays more so than gingerbread.
Many a child (or a child at heart) has spent hours carefully trying to create decorative gingerbread houses. Although gingerbread recipes span various cultures, gingerbread houses originated in 16th century Germany. The fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” helped solidify the popularity of gingerbread, which became part of Christmas traditions.
Now in its 38th year, the Turkey Trot 5K is unique in that it does not require an official sign up process. Because the race occurs so late in the calendar year, weather can Even though gingerbread play a limiting factor, but Kahler reports it is not unusual for participation to creep toward houses can be fun to make, there’s no denying it can be triple digits. exacting work — especially for Walk-up registration is permitted for the those who strive for perfection. road race. • Go for form and not flavor. Few gingerbread houses ever get eaten, so focus on finding a dough that will bake up rock hard as opposed to one that tastes good. • Get the right icing texture. Pastry artist Catherine Beddall says royal icing is the preferred “glue” to adhere gingerbread pieces. Beddall says icing should be thick like peanut butter and not runny. • Mind the dough. Do not roll out the gingerbread dough too thin or it may become brittle after being cooked. Always cut
out shapes before the gingerbread is baked. Let the baked pieces sit overnight to cool completely before using them to build. • Patience is key. Allow the icing to dry for at least a couple of hours after adhering each piece and before moving and handling the house, says Beddall. Work in stages so that individual items can be decorated and allowed to dry. Then the walls can be put together, followed by the roof pieces. • Kids likely will need help. Children may not have the patience or steadiness to handle complete gingerbread construction. They can decorate the separate pieces of the house while the components are laying flat, which is easier for kids. Adults can do the main assembly later on. • Utilize a template. Free-handing may not be easy. Cut out templates using cardboard or posterboard for various gingerbread pieces. One of the most important tips is to have fun. Don’t take gingerbread house making too seriously as a novice. Rather, enjoy the experience and the centuries-old tradition.

Rain didn’t dampen the fun at last year’s Whobilation Recreation Jubilation 5K and Max & Cindy Lou Who’s Fun Run at Emma’s Coffee House. Many participants were decked out in fun Christmas apparel. This year’s fun run and annual Bad Axe Christmas parade will be held Nov. 30. (Tribune File Photo) continued from page 6 Pay attention to each float from beginning to end, though, as the Grinch himself will be staged toward the end of the parade line and is rumored to have a satchel full of presents to deliver to good boys and girls as part of “Grinch Gives.” “It is a means of the Grinch giving back Christmas,” Connors Brown said. “At the end of the parade route, the Chamber is always the last float or walking group by Santa Claus. So, with Santa in the sleigh, we walk beside and pass out all these donated presents. The businesses give us their business cards if they donated, and we use those as a gift tag so that they know where their gift came from.” Also on parade day, the Chamber encourages participation in a fun run for the avid fitness members among the community.
“We also have, on parade day, the second annual Whobilation Recreation Jubilation 5K,” Bad Axe Chamber of Commerce President Kelsey Connors Brown said. “That starts at 2 p.m., and that’s actually put on by Emma’s Coffee House, Bad Axe Club Fitness and McLaren Thumb Region.”

Harbor Beach to host annual Christmas parade Expecting new entries this year By Eric Young Tribune Editor HARBOR BEACH — The December evening will once again be lit by the lights from a number of holiday floats in Harbor Beach Dec. 7, as the 34th annual Christmas Parade will be held. Committee member Debbie Brandow said the parade is expected to include several new entries this year. “As of right now we have 23 entries, but we’re still working on different ones,” she said. “We have some new ones this year coming in.” Caseville hosted its Lunch with Santa at the Caseville Eagles Club last year, while Harbor Beach held its annual Lighted Christmas Parade. This year’s event is scheduled for Dec. 7. (File Photos)

As for the parade, Brandow said there is no particular theme, people can decorate however they want, but they are asked not to include Santa as he will be on the final float in the parade. Otherwise, it’s up to each person or business what they want to include. “We just let people go with it,” she said. “We let them do what they want.”

While the parade is the main event, it won’t be the only event going on. Brandow said there will be a cookie walk at the Harbor Beach United Methodist church, and Zion Lutheran Church will again hold its cookie and craft bazaar. The Harbor Beach library will also have activities going on during the day.
Bad Axe 269-8135
The parade will begin at City Hall and travel east on State Street to the light, then south on
Huron Avenue to Trescott Street. Lineup will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Trescott Street from Fifth Street to Shock Street. The parade begins at 5:30 p.m. Brandow said the event is not weather-dependent, and will be held no matter what, unless the weather is severe. Last year, she said, it rained during the parade, but with snow already on the ground in early November this year, the parade is more likely to have more of a wintery feel this time around. Brandow said people can register right up until the day of the parade, though they can register online early by visiting harborbeachchristmasparade.com. She encouraged people to come out and enjoy the event. “There are a lot of fun things to do in Harbor Beach that day,” she said. “There are a lot of little shops that way they can check out. Great photos for Christmas cards and things like that. There is a lot of nice picture taking. The women from the churches make really awesome cookies.” “It’s just a fun day,” Brandow continued. “People can come out and enjoy the evening.” Those looking for additional information can visit www.harborbeach.com, harborbeachchristmasparade.com or call Brandow at 989670-8639.

How to care for wild birds this winter when some human intervention can prove handy, advise ornithologists. A few simple efforts may benefit birds and other wildlife that may not hibernate winter away or escape to the tropics.
The arrival of winter forces everyone to confront the changes synonymous with the season, and local wildlife is no exception. Low temperatures, harsh winter storms and a scarcity of food can make it challenging for wildlife, including birds, to thrive throughout the winter. Even though several species of birds are migratory and travel to warmer climates to wait out winter, many others stay put. The Audubon Society says that keeping close to home helps some species of birds maintain their territories. • Have a supply of food, bird feeders, houses, and any other bird-related gear at the ready before the storms really rev up. • Invest in nutritious food, such as black oil sunflower seeds or blends that are high in black oil sunflower seeds. You also can make available more foods that are high in fat, such as suet, peanut butter or even whole peanuts. Mother Nature Network also suggests adding meal worms if they can be found. • Choose feeders that will keep seed dry; otherwise, it will be prone to bacterial and fungal growth. • Don’t discard fallen leaves or any downed twigs or pruned boughs from trees.
