It gave me the courage to step outside of my comfort zone and to try things that I would have otherwise said no to doing. I highly recommend it. 9. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? If I could be any fictional character, I would have to choose Hope Pym, otherwise known as the Wasp from Antman & the Wasp. First, it would be amazing to be able to fly. Additionally, she is very strong, extremely intelligent and can shrink to be super small. It would be interesting to see the world that way. 10. The best aspects of both of my jobs is the fact that I get to work with people on a daily basis. I love to get into classrooms around the county and work with teachers and students on fun and engaging technology tools to advance their learning. I also enjoy working with my photo and video clients to create relevant art that they love. Travel is another perk for both of my jobs as I am constantly on the go and traveling to different schools or different parts of the state. 3. Why is your community a good place to live and work? My community is a great place to live and work because of the people. I grew up in Ubly and now live in Bad Axe, which has allowed me to develop and grow a lot of relationships. The camaraderie in our small communities is what I look forward to and what keeps me and my family here. 4. What one person has influenced you the most? I have been influenced mostly by my parents. They have always been there for me, supported me in all of my endeavors, and were always willing to help lead me down the right path. They lead by example and have helped shape me into the husband and father I am today. 5. What is your biggest goal in life? My biggest goal in life is to own an art gallery where I can run my business out of. 6. What do you do to relieve stress? To relieve stress, one of my favorite things to do is go out in the middle of the night and photograph the sky. Whether I am at the Mackinac Bridge shooting the Northern Lights or at Turnip Rock, there is something about the stillness of the night that makes me giddy like a child. 7. What are your three favorite movies? My top three favorite movies are Toy Story, Home Alone, and Jason Bourne. 8. Name a book that has influenced you. As a visual learner, you won’t find me reading much. For me, YouTube has been a huge tool. I have learned so much about photography and am still learning, and I am glad there are many people who share their knowledge. 9. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? If I could be a fictional character, I would be a superhero who can fly. If you have seen some of my photos, you know that I like heights and love to dangle out of helicopters. 10. 2. What is the best aspect of your job? Helping students. That’s why I originally entered the profession of education as a teacher. Now, in my position as principal, I have the ability to do even more positive things for students. It can be very rewarding.

8. Name a book that has influenced you. Mankind, The Story of all of Us. It chronicles the major events throughout the history of humans. It made me realize how incredibly lucky I am to be living in the USA in the 21st century.

3. Why is your community a good place to live and work? The people in Ubly are very hard-working and respectful. They have passed those qualities down to their children and it is the reason we have such a great school. I also have the privilege of working with a great group of people within the school. The teachers and other staff members care about our students and will go the extra mile to help. 4. What one person has influenced you the most? My parents, I can’t narrow it to one. They taught me to work hard, be honest, treat people with respect, and help others. 5. What is your biggest goal in life? To raise great kids. I want them to be positive members of society and lead a good life. 6. What do you do to relieve stress? Spending time with my family is always a great stress reliever. I also enjoy watching and playing sports. However, the most unusual way I relieve stress is by cutting wood. Being able to let my brain relax and do physical labor is a nice change of pace. 7. What are your three favorite movies?

9. If you could be any fictional

It would be fantastic to prevent problems rather than fixing them after the fact. 10. What quote do you live by? “Always leave things better than you found them.”

If you are asking about a career goal, I would tell you I’m living it. I have worked for campgrounds, both private and public, since I was 13. I have always enjoyed working with the public and the outdoors. My current position gives me the ability to do both in a greater capacity than ever before. My goal is to learn and grow in each position I hold so I can better serve the people that visit our facilities. I love being on the front lines where I still get to see our daily visitors, and even get to know some of them by name. 6. What do you do to relieve stress? First, I spend time with my family. This starts with Kayla, my wife, and extends to all of the people I grew up with and enjoy spending time with. One of the best ways to relieve stress is by helping with our church’s KC3 program on Tuesday nights. Seeing the friendships blossom, the kids’ attentiveness in class, and the enjoyment they have gives me hope for the future and melts away my worries (not that they don’t sometimes add worry to me, but I always walk away feeling more positive). Other days Kayla and I will go for a walk or take a drive with our dog, Xena. We love to find new local features and try all of the restaurants. 1. Lord of the Rings Trilogy (sorry if this is cheating, but I guess my favorite is Return of the King), How to Train Your Dragon, and Marvel: Avengers. 8. Name a book that has influenced you. The Hobbit. It may be a strange book for influence, but it was my first “big” book. I loved reading it because it was a story of someone who risked everything just to have an adventure. He explored, he took chances, and he built relationships. It is even mentioned in other books the unintended consequences of Bilbo Baggins going on that journey. We never know where our next adventure will lead or what may result from it, and we never will unless we take the first steps. 9. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? At no point in my life have I really wished I was a fictional character. There may be circumstances in this life that I wouldn’t mind changing, but every time I let my imagination go wild, even from a young age, I was always me. 10. At Storm Ag, I get to make products that save farmers time and money. It’s a great feeling to get calls from farmers I’ve never met asking about products because they heard about them. I enjoy getting feedback, which

The best part is being able to take certain parts, reverse engineer them, make a redesign, and 3D print it to show a farmer what the product could be or look like. Huron Precision MFG is great because I get to interact with different engineers from different industries. I like machining parts from blueprints because there are not many maybes or hypotheticals. When making parts from a print there is a level of stability which makes things easy to process, most of the time. Using CAM to generate high speed tool paths for the CNCs makes the job fun. Kristen L. Rifenbark 8 1. Current job title/ responsibilities Currently, I am wearing many hats. I had been Scheurer’s risk, document and patient safety coordinator. As risk manager, I was responsible to ensure that we had appropriate liability coverage and to mitigate any potential risks for the organization. As document manager, my responsibilities were to ensure that the organization’s policy and procedures were able to be updated and accessible to all staff according to various regulations. For patient safety, I was responsible to ensure that our patients were kept safe in all aspects of their care. I am transitioning into a new role with Scheurer, as the clinic manager for Scheurer Primary Care — Bad Axe and Scheurer Health FastCare. As these buildings are currently in the “build” phase, I am responsible to ensure that they will be functional and am assembling our team for these locations. This is a very exciting opportunity for me that I am enjoying and look forward to working in Bad Axe very soon. 2. What is the best aspect of your job? The best aspect of my job is that it allows me to be a lifelong learner. As they say, the only constant in healthcare is change. I love dig-

ging into references and finding the base regulation or best practice and then determining how to make it “Scheurer.” The second best aspect of my job is helping people. I love when I get to know a patient and can help brighten their day. Our patients give the best hugs. 3. Why is your community a good place to live and work? With the exception of my college days (Fire up, Chips!), I’ve always lived in Huron County. I cannot imagine raising my girls anywhere else. Mike and I are blessed to have our family very close by and depend on them to help raise our young family. I love that people are trustworthy and trusting. I love that people will step up and help out if a need arises. I love that our community is friendly to one another. On top of all of that, we live in a very beautiful and unique area. 4. What one person has influenced you the most? I’m going to cheat on this one and give two answers: my mom and my dad. My mom is the toughest, strongest, most practical person you’ll ever meet. I constantly find myself saying to my girls, “Do you know what Nana would say or do in this situation?” Typically the answer is something along the lines of, “Suck it up (i.e. your pity party is

now over),” or, “stand up for yourself,” or, “hard work will get you where you want to be.” My favorite principle that my mom taught my three sisters and me is to never rely on a man to do something for you. If the refrigerator is broke, fix it. You don’t need to wait for your husband to arrive home and grab his tool belt. If there is a tractor that needs to be moved, get up there and move it. Is there a job to be done? What are you waiting for (it better not be a man)? I love that about my mom. My dad has taught me many things as well. He taught us things like, “if you are going to do a job, you do it right the first time.” He cannot easily tolerate people who do not have or use common sense. He taught us that hard work is what we do. He also taught us how to have fun and play hard. My dad has always been there for me. When I was in college and got stranded at a rest stop on my way to the U.P., there was no doubt in my mind that not only would he rescue me, he would also trailer another vehicle to me so I could continue my journey. Taking care of family is important to my dad. He also taught me that pity parties are never ok. He used to push my grandma (his mother) to do things he knew she could do, even though she was handicapped. He never gives up on anyone.

I am who I am today because of my parents and I love them very much. 5. What is your biggest goal in life? My biggest goal in life is to live my life to my fullest potential and to serve the Lord. I know that is very general and vague; I do have big goals but that is the biggest. Other big goals of mine include becoming a COO of a hospital or health system, writing a book and buying or building a new house. As other ideas pop into my head, they’ll be added to the list. 6. What do you do to relieve stress? I know myself enough to know that I am an introvert. At work, I find it valuable to be outgoing and network with others and build important relationships. While I enjoy that, it is draining to an introvert. As such, I like to be alone to relieve stress. My favorite stress reliever is cruising. I have driven what I refer to as “The Learman Road Loop” around Bad Axe by myself more times than I can count. When my oldest daughter was little, I’d put her in the car and we’d cruise backroads for hours. The purpose wasn’t to put her to sleep (because she doesn’t sleep) it was to just be. Turn the radio up

(I find the louder the music the better my singing gets) and drive around to no place in particular. That is how I relieve stress. 7. What are your three favorite movies? The Wizard of Oz, The Land Before Time, and The Little Mermaid. I have to admit that I don’t watch a ton of movies, as you can tell the movies I mentioned where all from my childhood. 8. Name a book that has influenced you. Aside from the Bible, a book that has influenced me was Don Norman’s The Design of Everyday Things. I read a lot, both fiction and nonfiction, both for pleasure and for fun so narrowing it down to one is definitely hard. What I liked about Mr. Norman’s book was that it applies to my everyday life as well as my work life. It was extremely interesting to learn about Human Factors Engineering and how people interact with objects and how the design of objects either helps us or hinders us. It leads to further thought and discussion on discipline of people based on the choices they made when they were using the equipment that was designed in a way that helps or hinders. My favorite example is that this: when Rifenbark - Continued on 16

knew I wanted to come back to the Thumb area to teach and was blessed to find a job at the Huron ISD right away after graduating from college. I love my community because it is like a family. Everyone is there to help when needed and always looking out for each other. I love being able to raise my children in a community where I know they are safe and being “watched” by others when I am not around. It really does take a village to raise a child. 4. What one person has influenced you the most? My mom, Deb Hubbard. She is always there for me and my family. She has always done her best to make sure we had everything we need. We were involved in lots of extra-curricular activities as kids and she was always there to support us. Even today she juggles three jobs while also helping with the grandkids and doing projects to help get things ready for my classroom. I can always count on her and my dad, Rob Hubbard. I would be lost without them and all their

I take lots of pictures, but getting them developed and in books is a different story.

And “The Gift of Failure” is a book every parent and teacher should read.

Becky Stephan 17 1. Current job title/ responsibilities? I’m the Executive Director at Meadow Lane Assisted Living & Memory Care in Bad Axe. I’m responsible for many different things such as marketing and serving as a brand ambassador for our senior community. A great deal of that means conducting tours of our building to prospective residents and their families, and maintaining solid working relationships with other sources that serve our senior population in the Thumb. I also oversee daily operations for our building to ensure departments are running efficiently, manage annual budgets, maintain compliance with State of Michigan Licensing Department and Fire Bureau, as well as working to to promote and inspire positive relationships and experiences for our residents, families and staff. 2. What is the best aspect of your job? I’m not certain I can narrow it down to just one. I’m so lucky to have a career that allows me to connect and build relationships

with a great deal of people on a daily basis. I love having the opportunity to sit down with a resident or their family member over a cup of coffee — and have a genuine conversation about how they are doing, learning about new grandbabies, what life was like when they were my age, or their own general experiences during life’s journey. It’s pretty delightful to just appreciate life for what it is at the very moment you are with them, and working daily in a building that is home to 40-50 seniors means that they (and their families) are truly a second family that I’ve come to know and love. It’s probably a rarity that an individual is blessed enough to enjoy moments, instead of being pressured to focus solely on all the business-oriented aspects of their job. All of these things are just a smidge of what makes my job amazing. 3. Why is your community a good place to live and work? I appreciate living in a community where people are compas-

sionate, and have big hearts and helping hands. There’s something to be said about making eye contact with others in your daily routine, and they smile and say hello. The Thumb has many people who are kind-hearted and concerned about the well-being of others; they don’t have some sort of agenda, but rather are always more than willing to give the shirt off their back if it can help benefit another person. Small towns are the best kind of towns. 4. What one person has influenced you the most? I have to say, both my mom and my dad. My parents are the most honest, loving, and encouraging people I’ve ever known. They’ve taught me to always treat people with respect, and that running into obstacles in your path should prompt you to work harder instead of giving up. At times when I have been my own worst critic, they were always by my side, cheering me on and loving me, unconditionally. They are always giving of themselves beyond measure. They have

always been, and will continue to be my shining examples of honest-to-goodness, wonderful people. Love you Mom and Dad. 5. What is your biggest goal in life? My husband and I have two daughters that the sun and the moon rise and set upon. Probably similar to most parents, my biggest goal is to be a good example to both of them, and to be a positive influence and role model. It’s important to me as a mom, to be the best support system to my kiddos as possible and advocate for them; while still teaching them to think and act appropriately for themselves. 6. What do you do to relieve stress? If I just want to decompress, I usually turn on the Alexa to Pandora’s Old School Rap channel and cook/bake or do some home improvement projects to some loud music. Maybe some might think some House of Pain paired with cupcake making is weird, but it’s totally my jam. When I grab a glass of wine and I do some heavy duty house

cleaning and closet purging — whew, you know it’s been a rough week. 7. What are your three favorite movies? The Shawshank Redemption, Uncle Buck, and 16 Blocks. 8. Name a book that has influenced you: Heaven Is For Real by Todd Burpo. The book recounts his four year old son’s experiences in heaven during emergency surgery. A fantastic, quick read. 9. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? I’d totally be Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds. She’s smart, funny, says plenty of inappropriate/stupid things, is completely fashion-forward, and works for the FBI. Winning! 10. What quote do you live by? “I hope you’re proud of yourself for the times you’ve said ‘yes,’ when all it meant was extra work for you, and was seemingly helpful only to somebody else.” Mr. Rogers

Rifenbark - Continued from 6 you shut off a projector, it will ask if you are sure you want to shut it down so you are required to indicate twice that you want to turn the projector off. On some older models of cardiac defibrillators, Mr. Norman found that you only had to press the button once and the machine would turn off. To restart the machine, it required several minutes of warm up time. The buttons on the machine were confusing, making it look like you would shock the patient when in reality you were shutting the machine down. That type of design was harmful to patients and to staff using the equipment. It is easy to overlook product design but it’s impacts can be colossal. 9. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? I think I would be Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz if I could be any fictional character. She lives on a farm (I would love that) with her

family and close friends. She is no stranger to hard work yet she is able to be surrounded by her family. Then she gets to travel on an adventure of a lifetime. While it was certainly scary at times, she had faith that she would be able to return home. I love traveling. Dorothy got to witness new and exciting things that she’d never seen before. When I return home from a long trip, I always think to myself, “There is no place like home.” While I love to travel and being adventurous, I always feel a level of peace at being back home in my familiar surroundings. And who wouldn’t want to go over the rainbow? 10. What quote do you live by? Professional success for me means being respected and appreciated for the work that I do. 6. What do you do to relieve stress? Usually run or walk outside, while listening to music. 7. What are your three favorite movies? The Bourne series with Matt Damon, Ocean’s 11 (both, the original and the remake), and Elf. 8. Name a book that has influenced you. Dare to Lead by Brene Brown. 9. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be?

Phoebe Buffay, from Friends. She is so fun. 10. What quote do you live by? “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” This is from Brene Brown. Seems simple, but it has big meaning that I think is applicable not just in the workplace, addressing the way that we talk with our coworkers, but also how we talk to ourselves, our family and our friends. Brene explains that a lack of clarity in the way that we speak can have consequences like, “diminishing trust and engagement, an increase in problematic behavior, including passive-aggressive behavior, talking behind people’s back, pervasive backchannel communication, gossip, and the “dirty yes” (when I say YES to your face and NO behind your back).”
