Port Austin planning return of Carfest Classic car show to take place in late September ROBERT CREENAN robert.creenan@hearst.com An old favorite event will be making its return to Port Austin later in September. The Port Austin Carfest will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 25 in the parking lot next to the old gymnasium at 8861 Line Street. Steve Penn, a trustee with the Port Austin Chamber of Commerce which is sponsoring the event, said there previously was a car show years ago that was popular among classic car owners and the people who lived in the area. It was held along Lake Street and despite its popularity, the organizers eventually could not put it on anymore. “The people who had sponsored it and put it together got older and they didn’t want to do it anymore, so it fell by the wayside,” Penn said. The chamber of commerce has been trying to put on events in Port Austin that are not just during the heart of the summer, since
lots of tourists come there and they want to stretch the summer season into when kids start going back to school. This lead the chamber to resurrect this car show. The show will not feature any judged competitions, as Penn described it more as an opportunity for like-minded people to get together and have an easygoing way to spend an afternoon. He said that if someone does have a classic car, they likely have friends who are classic car owners as well. “If you have an antique car or classic truck, you’re welcome to bring it,” Penn said. “Let everybody see what you got.” A four-piece band will be playing during the show in a tent at the village green, where the Port Austin Farmer’s Market is normally held. For classic car owners to show off what they have collected, registration costs $15. The first 100 people that register are planned to get a dash plaque. Penn said that if this show has a decent turnout, it will likely continue in the future.
The Port Austin Chamber of Commerce will bring back the village’s Carfest in late September, where classic cars will be displayed similar to other car shows held in Huron County. (Tribune File Photo)

Elkton Country Street Fair returns Sept. 25 with new ‘foam party’

Investment Opportunities
The annual Elkton Country Street Fair returns to the north side of Main Street on Sept. 25. The fair, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature eight zones for vendors, with spots for booths ranging from $10 to $20, depending on the zone. First-time street fair vendors will receive a $5 discount on their booths. The fair usually features 50 to 60 vendors offering items like food, handmade craft items, cosmetics, woodworking and jewelry as well as a small farmers market. Vendors come from all over the Thumb and the state to offer their wares. The fair will also include live music from the Josh Ramses band as well as a “Meet Your Heroes” area, where kids can talk with police officers, firefighters and ambulance crews, check out equipment and take part in other activities. Agnes Kosinski, one of the organizers of the street fair, said there will two new fun activities added to this year’s schedule. The first is a pumpkin decorating contest, with categories for kids, teens and adults and two prize categories: People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice. The second new activity was made possible when a number of sponsors chipped in to purchase a foam-making machine. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kids Zone, youngsters will have the chance to jump into a huge pile of foam to hunt for prizes hidden inside. Kosinski said foam parties will be held for different age brackets each hour to make sure smaller children don’t get lost in the shuff le.

The annual Elkton Country Street Fair returns to the north side of Main Street on Sept. 25. The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Tribune File Photo) “We try to keep things fun for the kids,” she said. Kosinski said even though they’ve got numerous vendors lined up for this year’s fair, they accept new vendors up until a week before the fair. “We’re getting more vendors, and we’re always looking for more vendors,” she said. Organizers are well-aware of the current situation involving the pandemic, and Kosinski said they will follow guidelines issued by the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and evaluate conditions as the fair approaches. “The bottom line is to keep everybody safe,” she said.

New sites in Huron, Sanilac, Tuscola, Bay and St. Clair Counties!!! Adding new sites regularly! Elkton will be holding its annual Trunk-Or-Treat event on Oct. 31. (Tribune File Photo)
Elkton Trunk-Or-Treat favorite haunt of cool goblins and ghouls MARK BIRDSALL mark.birdsall@hearstnp.com We all loved Halloween when we were kids – the costumes, the candy, Charlie Brown on TV. There were parties at school, decorations all over the house, and then there was the big night when we hit the streets to go trick-or-treating. The excitement carried us the first few blocks, as the miniature Snickers bars and peanut butter kisses begin to fill the pillowcases and pumpkin-shaped pails we brought with us to collect our haul. But since it was October, the night be a chilly or damp one, and our desire for candy may have kept us out just a little too long as we pushed to the next block. Pretty soon, our feet were tired and we just wanted to
go home. Well, stop ghoulin’ around and head to Elkton this Halloween for the return of the town’s annual Trunk-OrTreat event. You’ll save yourself and your little goblins some shoe leather and still have a great time. For the Trunk-Or-Treat event, Elkton closes off Main Street at 5 p.m. for a oneof-a kind trick-or-treating experience from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 pm. The street will be blocked off prior to the start of trick-or-treating, and families can park their cars or pickups on Main Street, decorate around their vehicle and hand out candy. Everyone is invited to trick-or-treat or hand out candy. Those wishing to give out candy should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the event to park their vehi-
cles before the barricades are moved into the street. The Huron Youth Center and Elkton Civic Center will be open for families that want to decorate and set up at a table. Those who want to decorate tables can get access to the center the day before the event to do their decorating. Kurt Damrow of the Elkton Lions Club said TrunkOr-Treat has been growing steadily in popularity since it began several years ago, and it provides a great option for families who live in more rural areas where trick-or-treating isn’t practical. “It’s a lot easier for the families, especially with smaller kids,” Damrow said. Elkton Trunk-Or-Treat will take place on Sunday, Oct. 31, starting at 5:30 p.m.

CHARITY ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Charity Island Lighthouse was established in 1857, and currently is privately owned. It stands in ruins at the northwest tip of Big Charity Island. Visit www.charityisland.net for more information.
HARBOR BEACH LIGHTHOUSE
The Harbor Beach Lighthouse is located at the end of the north breakwater entrance to the harbor of refuge. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society has been working with city officials to preserve the historic landmark.
POINTE AUX BARQUES LIGHTHOUSE
The original Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse was constructed of stone taken from the shore of Lake Huron in 1848. The keeper’s house and separate tower were located on a three acre clearing hacked out of the dense wilderness. By 1857, the ravages of shoreline weather and a fire in the interior of the house created the need for a new structure. The new keeper’s house and attached 89-foot tower were built of the finest brick available. The light is still an active aid to navigation, making Pointe aux Barques one of the oldest continuously operating Lights on the Great Lakes. In 1875, a Class A lifesaving station was constructed 300 yards south of the lighthouse. It was the first lifesaving station opened on the Great Lakes. The 62 year history of the station credits over 200 rescues to this station and its brave crews. The Thumb Bottomland Preserve surrounding Pointe aux Barques contains 105 known wrecks, reflecting the danger posed by shoals surrounding Pointe aux Barques. The Pointe aux Barques keeper’s house and tower have been completely restored and contain historical artifacts from a bygone era. The museum is open to the public free of charge and donations are appreciated to help fund the society’s projects. The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse is located six miles north of Port Hope off M-25 on Lighthouse Road in Lighthouse County Park.
