Harbor Beach ‘Pirates Motorcycle Run’ plans to open community to bikers TERESA HOMSI teresa.homsi@hearstnp.com Although the details are still being finalized, the Harbor Beach “Pirates Motorcycle Run” will be held this year. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. Aug. 21. The tentative schedule includes registration for bikers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in town. After registration, bikers will meet at the American Legion Hall and head out at 1 p.m. Event coordinator and Harbor Beach Mayor Gary Booms said the route has not been set, but he’s currently planning seven different stops for participants. After the motorcade ends at 5 p.m., attendees will head to Lincoln Memorial Park for live music and a barbecue. Booms said this is a new
event to Harbor Beach, but he had been wanting to host it since he got a Harley a couple of years ago. “Our city director has a motorcycle and then our community promotions director Kelly and her husband have motorcycles, so I thought this would be a great idea for the (biker community),” Booms said. With the pandemic, the idea never took off as he had hoped, but Booms saw a second chance this summer. “We thought we’ll give it a try and see what happens,” Booms said. “We’re always looking for different ways to get people to come to Harbor Beach, support the community and promote Huron County and the Thumb in general.” Booms said it would be great just to have 20 bikes come out for the event’s first year running, but he has no idea what to expect as far as turnout. “Hopefully we get to draw
some people over and just have a good time and promote the area,” Booms said. “If it goes over this year great, next year we might expand it out and maybe cruise a little further.” Depending on how this year goes, Booms sees potential for expansion in the future by adding more shows and making the event more family-friendly moving forward. Though the event is geared toward bikers, Booms said he still encourages everyone to come on out to the beach for music and food. “If you have a love for motorcycles and want to support our local community, come on out,” Booms said.
