the number of credits received will be determined by the college that he or she chooses to attend. In an AP class, the student must pass the final exam in order to receive college credit. Each college institution may require a different score, ranging from a one to a five, to determine if the student will be awarded those credits. Students who take AP and dual enrollment should be prepared to dedicate more time to studying and working on homework than in a normal high school level course. Mr. Joseph Terwillegar, AP Statistics and AP Biology instructor at Harbor Beach Community
Schools, says that an AP course “gives (Harbor Beach High School) the opportunity to challenge students above grade level. Terwillegar also states that AP courses are “honors which is another level of difficulty.” Terwillegar informs other AP teachers that, “If you are teaching an AP Class and ([students) are not complaining, then you are not doing it right.” Terwillegar also provided advice to students considering adding an AP class to their schedule. First, he said, “make sure that you (the student) understand the workload that
AP courses entail.” Secondly, he states students should come into class every day ready to work. His final advice to students was to find a balance between work and relaxation; he also advised students not to overload themselves with “too many AP classes and Dual Enrollment courses.” Overall, if you are a student looking to take AP classes and Dual Enrollment courses, reach out to students who have taken that path, AP teachers, and your guidance counselor to learn if these courses are appropriate for your personal education.

New opportunities to learn at Harbor Beach high school BY KAILEE SIEMEN AND KATRINA MAUSOLF Harbor Beach High School Recently there have been many new additions to our curriculum at Harbor Beach High School. We spoke to two of the teachers who are teaching the classes. Two of the classes that really piqued our interest were AP Psychology and Forensic Science. We interviewed Ms. Hill, teacher of the AP Psychology class, and Mrs. Pfaff, teacher of the Forensic Science class. We decided to stick with some simple questions. We first interviewed Mrs. Pfaff. Q: What is your favorite part of the class? “My favorite part of teaching the class is the application of all sciences to real world scenarios! Chemistry, biology, and physics are all involved in analyzing a crime scene!” Q: What grades can take the class? “There are no restrictions as to who can take the class. I would recommend upperclassmen, however, because we cover some pretty serious topics that take a lot of maturity to handle.” Q: How difficult would you say the class is? The class is not any more difficult than a typical science class. There is brand new vocabulary that needs to be learned, as in any other class” Q: What kind of projects

Suitcase Cat
BY SHEANLUKE BENDER Harbor Beach High School
BY ETHAN DUNN Harbor Beach High School Exploring is what my cat does best. When coming home, I often find KitKat in the most absurd places. Sometimes she is under the bed, other times on top of my wardrobe, and occasionally even on the support beams in the basement. She’s never discovered in the same spot twice. As pictured, she somehow managed to cram herself into my mother’s suitcase. Mom’s scream quaked throughout the house the moment she discovered the concealed creature.
My name is Seanluke Bender. I have been in love with the game of basketball since I was a kid. Growing up, I never had the chance to play a lot of sports, but basketball always found its way into my life. It didn’t matter if it was the TV or by myself, I would always spend my time playing and practicing. Fast forward to 2019-20, my sophomore year at Harbor Beach High School — I’m a starter on the JV basketball team. This game is held at home against Brown City and was one of my best games. I will continue to play basketball and see where my skills lead me.

Welding BY ANDREA BOOMS Harbor Beach High School I knew from the start I didn’t want to go to college; it’s just not for me. A trade school focuses on skills-based training that you will need for the type of trades you want to go in to. Welding has been an interest of mine since I was young. I helped my dad weld once when I was around 12 and it was amazing. I have done some small projects around the farm for my dad, but nothing big yet. I’m hoping to attend the night school at Huron Area Technical Center for welding next year to get my certificate.
Trap shooting BY NOAH STEIN AND LOGAN KANASKI Harbor Beach High School Trap Shooting: A sport that involves accuracy with a shotgun to shoot an orange clay target out of the air. This is a sport you can participate in at Harbor Beach Community High School. You can use a 12-gauge or a 20-gauge shotgun. One of the head coaches is Kenny Hessling and we practice and shoot for score at the Harbor Beach Gun Club. Lucas Stein, current senior, was one of the few kids in the league to compete at the state level, which was held last year in Mason, and is home
to the largest Trap Fields in the United States. We interviewed Lucas and our first question was, “What was it like shooting trap at state level?” His response was, “It was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to meet other kids from other schools that enjoy trap shooting.” What he likes about trap shooting is, “It is a great sport that includes all people.” he said, “Trap is the same as most sports, the more you practice the better you get,” when asked if trap shooting was easy or hard. Trap is a great opportunity for kids to learn about gun safety and get involved with shooting guns.

This is Niko. She is a very special animal to me. She’s very photogenic and loves to cuddle. I found her abandoned last summer by an old gas station, ever since then, she stays by my side no matter what. Although Niko wasn’t an expected addition to our family, we all love her with our whole hearts. Sometimes she’s a troublemaker, but at the end of the day all she wants to do is curl up in a ball and fall asleep.
Harbor Beach pirate mascot BY ZAVIER CRAVEN-PAPP AND CHASE SHAW WALKER Harbor Beach High School Many people wonder, what is it like in the suit? We asked our high school principal, Mr. Aaron Bulgrien. We learned that the suit has a built-in fan and padding for outside games, but if you are running around in the gym and such, it gets REALLY HOT. This makes the suit feel stuffy and smell bad. What are the rules of being the mascot? Some of the guidelines to follow are taking big strides when walking, no talking, never reveal your identity, be nice to kids and people, and have school spirit. Students can also participate as the mascot to earn service credits. Why do you do it? I do it to encourage the team and the crowd. The mascot opportunity is not done for money. It’s volunteering. The kids think it's cool they run up to me, hug me, give me high fives, and some people take pictures with me. What are some good things about being the pirate mascot? I like that the people are happy to see me, the kids running up and hugging me, and the bringing the team school spirit and encouraging them to win. Overall, participating as the school mascot is a great opportunity.

Video games: A competitive sport, yes or no? BY VINCENT SMAGLINSKI Harbor Beach High School A new sport is sweeping the nation, with both high schools and young adults; specifically, Harbor Beach at the beginning of this school year. This new sport is called Esports, which is competitively playing video games against other players. High School Esports members play a variety of games against other high school students. These games include Overwatch, Madden, Fifa, Counterstrike, Minecraft Hunger Games, Fortnite, and many more. However, Harbor Beach Esports only play Minecraft Hunger Games. The rules of Minecraft Hunger Games are to eliminate all the other players in the game using the loot that you find in chests. This loot consists of swords, bows, snowballs, enchantment bottles (to add unique skills to your weapons), eggs, and armor. As of Feb. 18, the Harbor Beach Esports players have been playing Minecraft and improving our PvP (Player vs Player) skills throughout the week. The team practices each day
Left to Right: Vincent Smaglinski, Mason Soper, and Dylan Guitar except Wednesdays. These practices can be done through a server like Hypixel, playing Mr. Roggenbuck’s Realm, or Playing on the official Esports server for practice rounds. This is all streamed on Twitch under harborbeachesports. Every Tuesday at 5 p.m., the
team plays the tournament against other schools across the country on the Esports Hunger Games Server for two matches. After these matches are over, the points are tallied. This depends on the number of eliminations you have on other players and the length
of time players remain in the game. The winter team members are Casandra Osentoski, Dylan Guitar, Mason Soper, and Vincent Smaglinski. We got some feedback from Harbor Beach’s best player this season, Mason Soper.
Q: What made you sign up for Esports? M: I wanted to do an extracurricular activity that I wanted to do. Q: What is the best part of Esports? M: When we all play Hunger Games and eat free pizza. Q: Does Esports ever get boring? M: Some days are dull, but it has been getting better due to Mr. Roggenbuck’s survival realm. Q: What has been your most exciting moment during Esports? M: When I broke my record and became the top player. As you can tell, Esports is an unknown sport, but is growing. There are many benefits of participating in Esports. These benefits include improvement of reaction time on certain actions, hanging out with friends after school, and socializing with friends about a topic we all have in common while having fun. Esports brings students together and it’s like any other team sport. Harbor Beach esports is coached by Mr. Roggenbuck and Mr. Tenbusch.
Choices of a Harbor Beach senior: Tracy Joy Legaspi
Spotlight: Mr. Bulgrien
BY ANDREW WEBER AND COLIN ROGGENBUCK Harbor Beach High School
BY KATHRYN OCOMEN Harbor Beach High School
For the past two years Mr. Bulgrien has been the middle and high school principal. He has made many positive impacts on the students and staff. He works an average of 10 hours every school day to improve our school. He recently introduced us to WIN (what I need) Time. He plans to improve this program along with adding other options and classes to WIN time. Mr. Bulgrien loves seeing his students succeed, not just in school but through art, robotics, music, FFA, and athletics. Before he became principal, he was a middle school English teacher. He loved how he was able to be close with every student that had a class with him. Being a principal, however, has allowed him to have a relationship with every student in sixth through 12th grade. If you have a problem, Mr. Bulgrien is the guy to go to. He will help you no matter the situation. The whole school is very lucky to have him as part of the school staff. We as a school look forward to the rest of the helpful improvements and changes he is going to make in order to change our lives.
Tracy Legaspi is a hard-working individual, spending an average of three to five hours a day studying and completing her homework. Her typical day at school would consist of four regular classes: Spanish 3, choir, anatomy and physiology, and lastly personal finance. To add, Tracy is an advanced placement and dual enrollment student. With taking advanced placement computer science principles all year, including up taking two Saint Clair Community courses for this second semester. In the first semester, Tracy had also taken a course through Mid-Michigan Community College. Tracy had made aware and sure that the credits she is gaining from taking these courses will transfer to where she will be furthering her education at Saint Clair Community College. Three college visits were all it had to take for Tracy to decide that Saint Clair was most fit for her, with a student to faculty ratio she liked and a campus environment she feels comfortable at.

Tracy believes in maintaining time management, which personally becomes more difficult when the countdown to graduation does not leave your mind. From one to 10, with 10 being the highest, Tracy responded quickly that the importance of time management on a scale would be a 10.
Balance High school is not all about getting a diploma or competing with your peers all the time to be on the top. Though, some seniors have been on that grind for four years and neglect social life in order to keep their ranking and grades high. In Tracy’s words, her regrets in high school were, “not going to games and taking a lot of dual classes junior year.” To say a social life is necessary in high school is debatable. Meanwhile, to be involved in high school could be very beneficial. does private childcare. Tracy is an excellent example of having social and school balance, though she may have sacrificed time more on her academics, she finds ways to improve her social life through all her workload. Advice Coming to an end with this interview, I hit Tracy with a question she had thought long about: “Do you think what you have accomplished in high school confidently prepares you for college. If so, why?” Answering YES very fast, she had taken time to list why. Tracy believes that such things like dual enrollment, talking to staff and teachers had helped her build this foundation of support she wanted to have before college. Tracy also stated with the introduction of different colleges presented to her with the help of Harbor Beach High School made her feel more confident about her college and career decision making. Her advice would be to not take more than you can handle but expand your horizons. The end Through her hard work and diligence, Tracy will be graduating this spring with highest honor as summa cum laude. As of right now she plans to attend Saint Clair Community College in the fall and study pediatric nursing, though she has considered transferring to a bigger college to specialize in what she wants to pursue. Her five-year vision for herself would be having contentment with a stable job, relationship, and travel alone or with family and friends.
