No returning starters.

Overview of newcomers: We have some very athletic guys who simply lack varsity experience. This year, those guys will get opportunities to play and contribute at that level.

Season outlook: Whenever a team plugs in this many new players, the prospectus is hard to determine. I am excited to see this many newcomers getting an opportunity to contribute, because then you have a competitive environment within practice. We have an athletic group that I expect will be able to play at a fast pace on both ends of the floor. My general expecta-

tion is for us to be a fun team to watch that will be able to exert pressure with both our defense and our offense.

BROWN COUNTY HORNETS

Coach: Jeff Bottorff

Last Year’s Record: 6-22 (1-8 WIVC)

Key Losses: Angel Duarte, Joe Miller, Jagr McGath, Aiden Seeley, Noah Ingram

About the Returning Starters: Our seniors bring athleticism and competitiveness, as all are excellent defenders who can play multiple positions. Maverick Henry and Tanner Sitze are excellent scorers, while Drew Markert is a tough defender and rebounder. Havens gained experienced last year in running the point, where we expect him to take a bigger role in running our offense this season.

man group have a winning mentality, and bring a great combination of skill, size and basketball IQ. I expect several from that group to have a significant impact on winning this year. Look for Jackson McNeff to have a breakout year as a sophomore.

Season Outlook

Strengths: We are blessed with excellent depth and a number of athletes who can play multiple roles. This will allow us to leverage our ability to defend full court and employ an up-tempo style of play.

Areas for Improvement: With a lot of youth, we will have to continue to get stronger, more physical and learn how to compete at the varsity level. Learning to adjust to a new approach and style will take some time. Our defensive capabilities will be much further ahead of our offensive capabilities early on, but expect to see growth through the year with more time and experience, especially with the underclassmen.

Expectations: This year will depend a great deal upon the leadership of our senior class and the integration of the underclassmen. We have the parts to have a very good team, but chemistry will be the key to our ceiling.

About the Returning Starters: We are returning quite a few guys who have been playing for two or three years. We have a lot of experience and depth, which should equate to us being very competitive this coming season.

Overview of Newcomers: The newcomers have quite a bit of experience also. Should make for competitive practices, in turn getting us ready for varsity battles throughout the season.

Season Outlook

Strengths: We will be long and athletic with good depth.

Areas for Improvement: We will need to replace the rebounding and leadership that Chase Caselton brought.

Expectations: Looking forward to putting a highly competitive team on the floor every night.

Season Outlook

Strengths: We are fast and athletic, and will be able to pressure all over the floor.

Areas for Improvement: Rebounding will be a key factor to our success. We lost two really good rebounders.

Expectations: I believe we can build on what we got going at the end of last season. We won seven in a row before losing in the regional championship game against Calhoun. The kids want to take that next step and are working hard. We play a very tough schedule but that’s what gets us better.

GRIGGSVILLE-PERRY TORNADOES

Coach: Garrett White

Last Year’s Record: 27-6 (8-1 WIVC, 3-0 PCC)

Key Losses: Michael Myers (15.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.2 apg,

2.1 spg), Wyatt Lipcaman (14.9 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 4.5 apg, 2.8 spg), Lane Lipcaman (8.4 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 4.5 apg, 3.4 spg)

Returning Starters: Senior guard Garrett Woodward (6.3 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.3 spg), senior forward Logan Fencik (4.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 0.9 apg, 1.2 spg)

Key Newcomers: Senior center Flint Kirk, senior forward Bradyn Lister, sophomore guard Brody Rush, sophomore guard Mario Rodgers, sophomore guard Cajen Austin, sophomore forward Hunter Brown, freshman forward Quentin Booker

Garrett Woodward has been a starter off and on for two years now. He is a long, athletic guard who can do a lot of different things on the court, especially offensively.

Overview of Newcomers: Flint Kirk has a ton of experience, having played varsity basketball since he was a freshman. He’s a very strong, physical kid who has improved his overall game. He’s our leader.

Bradyn Lister provides us with front court depth, a good feel for the game, and great passing.

Brody Rush is an explosive sophomore guard who can really score the ball and defend at a high level.

Mario Rodgers is a strong,

BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2024-25

tenacious defender and solid ball handler. He’s worked very hard on his own to improve.

Cajen Austin is maybe our best on-ball defender. He has very quick hands and can shoot it as well.

Hunter Brown has good length and skillset to help out our front court.

Quentin Booker is one of our best rebounders and defenders. He’s very strong and athletic.

Season Outlook

Strengths: Defense, transition offense and much-improved rebounding

Areas for Improvement: We just need to gain more experience and learn to play smarter, which comes with experience. We have a lot of young, hungry kids who are ready to show what they’ve got. They just need time on the varsity court.

Expectations: I think we are going to play very hard. We feel like people are writing us off after the graduation of six seniors last year and are excited to embrace the underdog role.

JACKSONVILLE CRIMSONS

Coach:

Michael Cameron

Overall record 13-19 (3-7 CS8)

Key Losses: Isaiah Martinez (13.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg)

Returning Starters: Senior guard Amaree Burries (18.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg), senior forward

Ryan McCombs (5.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 3.0 apg), junior guard Masen Johnson (7.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg)

Key Newcomers: Lamarion Williams (senior guard), Jacob Henry (senior forward), Jack Wilson (senior guard), Carter Berkley (senior guard), Anderson Decker (senior guard), Latrell Hemphill (junior guard), Troy Defrates (junior forward)

Returning Starters: We return the leading scorer in the CS8. We have unselfish playmakers that have high basketball IQ. They have CS8 experience and are ready to compete at a high level.

Newcomers: They all bring their own individual skills and attributes that complement each other well and make our team complete, with size, athleticism, shot-making ability, and basketball IQ.

Season outlook: We have high expectations for this season. We started off last season 3-0 in conference before battling some injuries. This is a team that has to continue responding positively to adversity and competing throughout an entire season. If we continue looking at the season as a process and strive for consistent improvement every day in practice, we will be playing our best basketball come March.

NEW BERLIN PRETZELS

Coach: Blake Lucas

Last Year’s Record: 22-11 (5-4 Sangamo)

Key Losses: Gannon Dodd (13.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg)

Returning Starters: Senior forward Griffin Fuchs (4.4 ppg, 2.5 rpg), junior guard Aydin Littig (6.1 ppg, 2.5

apg)

Key Newcomers: Gabe Molloy (junior guard), Reid Hepperly (junior forward), Charlie Nueman (junior forward)

About the Returning Starters: They bring experience and the ability to score the basketball.

Overview of Newcomers: They will contribute toughness, leadership and athleticism.

Season Outlook

Strengths: This team will excel at defense and believing in our system.

Areas for Improvement: The team needs to improve on rebounding and execution.

Expectations: We hope to be competitive.

NORTH GREENE SPARTANS

Coach: Ashly Thomas

Last Year’s Record: 8-21 (3-6 WIVC)

Returning Starters: Senior guard Brody Berry, senior guard Garret Hazelwonder, senior forward Ethan Clark, junior forward Luke Farris

Key Newcomers: Lucas Turner (junior forward), Logan Tepen (senior forward)

About the Returning Starters: They bring leadership and experience.

Overview of Newcomers: They will help in the area of rebounding.

Season Outlook

PITTSFIELD SAUKEES

Coach: Brad Tomhave

Last Year’s Record: 21-9

Returning Starters: Hayden Gratton, 5-11 junior guard

Returning Players: Conner Sweeting, 6-0 senior guard; Clayton Reinhardt, 6-2 senior forward; Carter Frazier, 5-11 senior guard; Grant McCartney, 5-9 senior guard; Trey Schlieper, 5-11 senior forward; Brett Ator, 5-11 senior forward; Taylor Graham, 6-0 junior guard; Riggston Bonds, 5-11 junior guard; Bobby Harris, 6-0 junior forward

Newcomers: Jaren Lawson, 5-9 senior guard; Brody Tomhave, 5-9 freshman guard; Ryan Harris, 6-0 freshman forward; Collin Bernard, 6-0 freshman forward

Key Losses: Brennan Tomhave, 6-3 guard; Konner Allen, 6-3 forward; Eli Mendenhall, 6-3 forward; Javan Petty, 6-1 guard; Ethan Gratton, 6-2 forward; Lucas Nichols, 6-1 guard

Outlook: We have several newcomers who will need to learn the value and intangibles of playing varsity basketball. The returning players have been very committed to the weight room this offseason, so hopefully, we see some gains that transition to the floor. We graduated a solid senior group that had some success, so hopefully, that will help fuel this year’s group to continue the strong tradition of Saukee basketball. We will look for our guys to play with an enormous amount of energy

on both ends of the floor and utilize our depth. Hopefully, we can stay healthy throughout the season and will be playing our best basketball going into the regional tournament. We are looking forward to the upcoming season and continuing to improve.

PLEASANT HILL WOLVES

Coach: Ryan Lowe

Last year’s record: 5-18 (0-7 WIVC)

Key Losses: Aayden Meyers -- high point scorer and rebounder

Returning starters: Lane Hubbard (senior) Brody Dolbeare (senior), Carter Jones (senior)

Newcomers: Levi Barnes (sophomore) Wes Bower (sophomore), Bing Lowe (sophomores)

Returners bring a lot of hustle and some experience.

Newcomers will have to adjust to the speed of the varsity game, but some of them got varsity experience last year and I expect them to really step it up.

Season Outlook: We have a lot of kids that play extremely hard. I hope our D can step it up this year and overcome some of the problems we will have being undersized. Our boys will fly around, but we need to take care of the ball better and finish around the basket better than we did last year.

PORTA/A-C CENTRAL BLUEJAYS

Coach: Steven Price

Returning Starters: We will return four starters from last season: seniors Drew Marr

(10 ppg, 3 rpg, 3.5 apg) and Griffin McClure (11 ppg, 3 rpg, 3 apg), as well as juniors Jett Karrick (6 ppg, 3 rpg, 1 apg) and Levi Hoagland (6 ppg, 4 rpg).

Last Year’s Record: 13-18

Some key contributors who will have bigger roles this year will be seniors Barrett Morse and Nate Keller, as well as juniors Brody Pettit, Clayton Hoke and Gavin Gronewold.

I believe we will be a tightknit group that knows the importance of toughness and togetherness.

ROUTT ROCKETS

Coach: Will Whalen

Last Year’s Record: 21-12 (7-2 WIVC)

Key Losses: Nolan Turner (8.0 ppg, 4 apg, All-Conference), Isaac Long (9.2 ppg, All-Conference)

Returning Starters: Kellen Creviston, Bryson Mossman, Brady Turner

About the Returning Starters: Mossman was All-State as a sophomore. Turner and Creviston bring rebounding and scoring from their positions.

Season Outlook: Three starters return from a 21-12 team. Will need to fill in the holes left by two seniors. We play in a tough conference and area, and need to compete every night to be able to succeed. Lots of questions with several newcomers.

SOUTH COUNTY VIPERS

Coach: Josh Krumwiede

Last year’s record: 24-9 (7-1 MSM)

BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2024-25

Key Losses: Noah Lyons (15 ppg, 6 rpg, 2 apg), Trevor Colwell (14 ppg, 3 rpg, 3 apg)

Returning Starters: Senior guard Bishop McDannald

6.5 ppg, 2 rpg, 1 apg), junior guard Caden Colwell (6 ppg, 3 rpg, 2 apg), senior forward Clark Nelson (5 ppg, 5 rpg, 1 apg)

Key Newcomers: Senior forward Gabe Lyons, senior forward Zach Turner, junior guard Chase Dougherty, junior guard Leo Bergschneider, junior guard Owen Paluska, junior guard Collin Johnson

All newcomers willing to contribute in various facets in order to help the team win.

Strengths: We will have depth and will be athletic.

Areas for improvement: Size and leadership

Expectations: Could take some time adjusting to new coach, but hope to be hitting our stride when it matters most (tournaments, MSM Conference, and ultimately regional).

TRIOPIA TROJANS

Coach: Rich Thompson

Key Losses: KJ Beck, Evan Bell, Austin Strubbe

Returners: Senior guard

Caleb Carpenter (11.5 ppg, 3 rpg, 2 apg), senior guard Barrett Whitehead (3.7 ppg, 1 rpg), junior forward Andrew Hobrock (2.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg), junior guard Grant Fricke (2.0 ppg, 1 rpg), senior forward Jaxon Dion (1 rpg), senior guard Brock York (1.1 rpg)

Last Year’s Record: 12-17

Newcomers: Junior for-

ward Jack Parlier, junior forward Jacob Cook, junior guard Bronc Bogner, freshman forward Avery Neathery, sophomore guard Sam Miller

Season Outlook: We return a lot of minutes off of last year’s team, although we have to replace quite a bit of scoring. I feel like this team has a lot of depth, and we have some newcomers who are ready to contribute this season. We hope to hang our hat on our defense and really want to apply pressure to help facilitate our offense. Our strength will be our depth, as we have about 10 players we feel can help out at the varsity level. If we can find our stride on offense and improve as the season goes on, I feel like we can have a very successful season.

WEST CENTRAL

Coach:

Ryan Sichting (8th season)

Last Year’s Record: 36-3 (9-0 WIVC)

The Cougars lost: Zack Evans (21.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 3.1 apg), Chance Little (15 ppg, 8.5 rpg), Mason Berry (8.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.6 apg)

Returning Varsity Experience: Senior Carson Brown (5.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg), junior Ryker Ford (4.5 ppg, 1.1 apg,

2.3 rpg), senior Cameron Sievers (2.8 ppg, 1.4 apg, 2.2 rpg), senior Caden Meyer, and junior Nick Hamilton

Other Varsity Members:

Senior Zac Howard, junior Carson Clevenger, junior Charlie Smith, sophomore Blayne Sidwell, sophomore

Gabe Howard.

Season outlook: We lost three key seniors off last year’s state championship team. Two were All-State players (Zack Evans and Chance Little). Mason Berry was our point guard last year and was our glue guy.

So we lost a majority of our scoring and experience from last year. I feel like our defense will be ahead of our offense early in the season. Each practice we have, I feel like we are showing growth on the offensive side of the ball. Carson Brown, Cameron Sievers, Ryker Ford, and

Caden Meyer all had experience playing in big games last year. Hopefully that will help some of our new guys that will be in our rotation. I’m looking forward to coaching this group, and I have no doubt this team will show growth as the season progresses.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2024-25

BEARDSTOWN

TIGERS

Coach:

Jimmy Maltby (9th Year)

Last Year’s Record: 12-18

Key Losses: Delma Salazar (6.8 points per game, 3.8 assists per game, 4 steals per game)

Returning Starters: Bella Palmer senior F/C (5.7 rebounds per game) -- Team leader with a lot of experience. Will be very active around the basket.

Dafne Mariscal senior F (3.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg) -- Inside/ outside player. Good shooter and sees the floor well.

Brandy Mendoza senior G/F (6.8 ppg) -- Leader. Skilled shooter.

Camila Salazar junior G (11.8 ppg) -- Very talented player. Not too many things she can’t do on the basketball floor.

Returning a lot of experience. Will bring leadership on both ends of the floor. Returning 95 percent of the scoring and rebounding from last season. We will have a hard time replacing Delma Salazar’s ball handling and defensive skills. This group works extremely hard and is very coachable.

Newcomers: Kylynn Malt-

by, junior (G/F) – Kylynn adds another scoring threat.

Latitia Kanda, sophomore (F) – Very athletic post player. Above average rebounder, and improving her offensive skills daily.

Andrea Flynn, junior (G) – Good ball handler. Andrea will add much-needed depth to our guard position.

Season Outlook: Strength will be our scoring and ability to attack the rim, which will bring more outside shot opportunities. I look for us to shoot a lot of threes. If the team defense improves and we handle the ball like I believe we can, the Lady Tigers will have a very successful season. The first two weeks of the season will be a good test. Playing eight games in 12 days to start the season.

BROWN COUNTY HORNETS

Coach: Dave Phelps

Last year’s league record: 7-1

Key Losses: Didn’t lose anyone … no seniors last year.

Returning Starters: Kenzie Kassing, sophomore (21.9ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.1 spg, 2.0 apg)

Ashlee Markert, senior (10.4 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 4.0 apg, 2.4 spg, 3.4 bpg)

Hope Ingram, sophomore (9.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.3 apg, 2.3 spg)

Isabel Duarte (3.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.5 spg)

Kyndel Painter (2.2 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.1 spg)

Key Newcomers: Joie Ham, junior post; Maggi Henry, sophomore post; Lena Anderson, sophomore post; Jamie Loehr, sophomore guard; Lizzy Blakeley, sophomore post; Ella Henry, sophomore guard; Gretchen Hilburn, sophomore guard

About the Returning Starters: Kenzie gives us a high-level scorer with the ability to play both with her back to the basket and facing up. She will present a matchup problem for teams. Ashlee, I believe, is the key for us. If she can score and rebound in double figures and be a rim protector for us without getting in foul trouble, we will be a tough team to beat. Ashlee also led us in assists and steals last year, so will be counting on her for that as well. We will need Hope to run the team for us this year. She gained more and more experience as the year went on last season, and we expect big things from her. She is also a player who can go inside and create matchup issues for teams as well.

Isabel and Kyndel will need to contribute by knocking down shots and playing good defense.

Overview of Newcomers: We were extremely young a year ago with two freshmen starters and four to five more coming off the bench to play significant minutes for us. All those girls gained valuable experience, and we are optimistic that experience will pay off in the win column this season.

Season Outlook

Strengths: We are very long and athletic, and we should be able to use that to our advantage, especially on the defensive end.

Areas for Improvement: Continue to gain experience for our younger girls. The bulk of our scoring will come from the sophomore class, but we will need some others to step up and play significant roles on both ends of the floor.

Expectations: We expect to compete for a conference title as well as a regional title and hopefully beyond.

CALHOUN WARRIORS

Coach: Mark Hillen

Last Year’s Record: 28-5 (8-0 WIVC)

Key Losses: Claire Hagen

(3.3 ppg, 1.6 rpg), Gracie Klaas (2.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.1 apg)

Returning Starters: Kate Zipprich, senior center (13.4 ppg, 56.9 percent FG, 11.4 rpg, 3.5 bpg, 1.6 spg, 1.9 apg)

Audrey Gilman, senior guard (13.9 ppg, 42.9 percent FG, 36.7 percent 3 FG, 5.8 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.9 spg)

Sadie Kiel, junior guard (6.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.3 spg)

Key Newcomers: Anna Oswald, senior forward; Kiera Sievers, junior guard/ forward; Stella Gress, junior guard; Layla Johnson, junior guard; Bralyn Lammy, sophomore guard; Anna Eberlin, sophomore guard

About the Returning Starters: Both Kate Zipprich and Audrey Gilman received recognition as first team WIVC players, and also landed on some special mention lists for different All-State teams. Both girls have started all four years of high school and bring a lot of experience to the table. Kate has reached 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. Audrey surpassed 1,000 points last season. Sadie Kiel was voted second team All-WIVC last season and brings key perimeter defense and guard skill to the team.

Overview of Newcomers:

Oswald, Sievers, Lammy, and Gress started at different times during the 2023-24 season. Oswald had a great offseason, and the coaching staff looks for her to make huge contributions this year. All four girls will be competing for starting spots and will likely take turns starting, depending on matchups throughout the season. Johnson and Eberlin had great JV seasons last year and will add important depth as we look to push the tempo on the court this season and test the depth of our opponents.

Season Outlook

Strengths: We have had three seasons in a row of high success with wins and championships. The experience we return will give us a huge boost, especially early in the year with volleyball making it to the state tournament this season. We have size and speed. If we can shoot it more consistently from deep this season, we are going to be tough to beat.

Areas for Improvement: We need to cut down on turnovers and shoot it better from three-point range.

Expectations: Our win/ loss record may not be as good as it was last year as we have added some tough

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2024-25

non-conference dates with Civic Memorial and the Breese Central Shootout, where we will play Cissna Park. We hope the additional competition on our non-conference schedule will help to prepare us for postseason play. Our conference will have several great teams with Brown County, Carrollton and West Central returning a lot of key players. We expect to be in the conversation for the conference championship and hope to be in several championship games during the season. We hope to stay healthy and play our best basketball in the postseason.

CARROLLTON HAWKS

Coach: Brian Madson

Last Year’s Record: 22-9 (5-2 WIVC, third in conference)

Key Losses: Darci Albrecht (6.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg 1.0 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.5 bpg)

Returning Starters: Lauren Flowers, senior guard (20.0 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 3.2 spg, 2.7 apg)

Abby Flowers, senior guard (8.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.0 spg, 2.4 apg)

Harper Darr, senior guard (10.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.0 spg, 1.7 apg)

Tessa Price, junior forward (1.2 ppg, 2.1 rpg)

Key Newcomers: Brookelyn Eilerman, sophomore forward; Blake Driskill, freshman guard; Chloe

McAdams, freshman forward/center

About the Returning Starters: We bring back all but one from last season. With a heavy senior class this year, they will bring experience and energy. They are determined to go further than last year’s sectional appearance. Lauren Flowers will be aiming to break her mom’s school career scoring record at Carrollton. She is solid all around the gym. Our defense is what we will hang our hat on. With a heavy guard-oriented team, we will look to be aggressive on the defensive end. Abby Flowers and Harper Darr will open things up with their outside shooting. Hayden McMurtrie gained valuable experience and can handle the ball. She is another threat shooting the ball as well.

Overview of Newcomers: Brookelyn Eilerman played great minutes late in the season last year and came on very solid in her role. Blake Driskill has a great basketball IQ. She can shoot the ball very well and will fit in nicely with the senior heavy group. Chloe McAdams, another freshman, will see quality minutes to help Megan and Tessa in the post.

Season Outlook

Strengths: This team will utilize our speed, quickness and athleticism. We will try to pressure teams on defense and look for transition on offense.

Areas for Improvement: Outside shooting is what we have been working on in the offseason. I feel like we can always shoot better.

A Triopia player looks over the defense during a recent practice. (Dennis Mathes / Journal-Courier)

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2024-25

Expectations: I expect a 20-plus win season, and to be in the fight for a conference title. Our three in-season tournaments (Waverly, Beardstown and our own tournament) are tournaments we are looking to win or finish near the top.

Returning Starters: Senior Addison Wright (7.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.7 apg), senior Elaina Lansaw (2.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 0.5 apg)

Key Newcomers: Senior guard Lillee Springman, junior forward Leah Wood, junior guard Jillian McAdams, sophomore forward Adeline Lansaw, sophomore guard Kalynn Weller, sophomore guard Karissa Ruyle, sophomore forward Ella Vetter, sophomore forward Jaylynn Pitchford, sophomore guard Caitlyn Nord

About the Returning Starters: Our two returning starters have been key contributors and played a lot of varsity basketball the past few years. They work very hard and have helped to develop good camaraderie on the team. I expect them to continue to lead by example.

Overview of Newcomers: We will have quite a few newcomers playing important varsity minutes for us this season. I look for our newcomers to continue to learn and improve throughout the season while bringing energy and enthusiasm to the team. We need them to be willing and able to play defense, rebound, and score when they have the opportunity.

Season Outlook: We know that we have to replace three senior starters and two other seniors who played important roles for us last year. We need to keep improving in all aspects to be prepared for the season. We expect the girls to continue to work hard and bring a positive attitude to all practices and games.

About the Returning Starters: Zara Harper was honorable mention All-CS8 last season. She is a three-year starter and will provide inside scoring, rebounding and ball handling. Maressa Williams will provide scoring and rebounding. Laila Cook will help handle the ball and provide three-point shooting. Mia Schaecher provides defense, ball handling, and three-point shooting, and Jocelyn Smock provides re-

bounding, inside scoring and defense.

Overview of Newcomers: Hayle Force (defense, ball handling, senior leadership), Jaycee Jackson (defense, ball handling), Chloe Kuhn (defense, ball handling). The sophomores and freshmen will compete for playing time and provide depth.

Season Outlook

Strengths: Harper and Williams give us experience, and will consistently score and rebound. Cook and Schaecher were among the top three-point shooters in the CS8 in both threes made and percentage.

Areas for Improvement: We will have to defend and rebound better than last season. And as always, our ability to take care of the ball and handle pressure will dictate how our season will go.

Expectations: We want to compete game in, game out and improve as the season progresses. We feel we can win some conference games and do well at both our Thanksgiving and Christmas tournaments. We want to be playing our best basketball at regional time.

NORTH GREENE

Mathes / Journal-Courier)

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2024-25

Coach: Logan Staats

Last Year’s Record: 2-26 (0-7 WIVC)

Key Losses: Nila Beatty, Chelsey Castleberry

Returning Starters: Junior forward Ella Osborne; junior forward Kiera Hurt; junior guard Larissa Heberling; sophomore guard Layna Bushnell

Key Newcomers: Freshman guard Mya Forrester; freshman guard Brooklyn Sharrow; freshman forward Chloe Harney; freshman guard Sydney Schutz

About the Returning Starters: The returning starters bring experience, leadership and toughness. Ella and Kiera play physically inside and rebound well, and both have scoring ability. Larissa

is a high energy player, rarely getting beat down the floor. Layna is a spark plug. She is a high-motor player on both ends of the floor.

Overview of Newcomers:

We have a really good class of freshmen coming in this year. Mya and Brooklyn both bring shooting ability and defense. Chloe adds some much-needed height, and has the ability to score inside and in the mid-range. Sydney is a good ball handler and decision maker. She gets herself and her teammates open. She is another high motor player who will contribute on both ends of the floor.

Season Outlook

Strengths: Defense Areas for Improvement: Scoring and turnovers

Expectations: We are a young team, so should see improvement as the season progresses. We should be a scrappy defensive team that is competitive no matter the situation.

PITTSFIELD SAUKEES

Coach: Noah Mendenhall

Last year’s record: 13-13

Returning Starters: Lila Simon (senior guard) and Madison Frieden (senior center)

Key Newcomers: Reese Ramsey and Lincoln McCartney

Season Outlook: One challenge we are facing this year is low numbers. This is a unique position to be in, as it allows us to develop a great-

er appreciation and respect for our teammates -- putting players in a leadership position at every level, and encouraging players to be more adaptive to unexpected situations.

Strengths: High levels of competition. We have an extremely talented and versatile group of young athletes. One goal we have is to continue to get better every day as there is always an opportunity where we can improve.

PLEASANT HILL/ WESTERN WOLVES

Coach: Jeff Shireman

Last year’s record: 8-21

Key losses: McKinley Lowe

Newcomers: Sophia Rennecker, Mya Sheppard

Outlook: Well, as you see we have six members on our team. For us to compete, we must stay injury and sickness free. Also, staying out of foul trouble will be a key.

PORTA/A-C

CENTRAL LADY JAYS

Coach: Derek Schnapp

Last year’s record: 30-2 (8-0 Sangamo Conference, league champion)

Key Losses: Jayce Privia (14.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.3 spg), Karlie Hoke (11.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.2 spg)

Key Returning Starters:

Senior center Carson Artha-

Returning Starters: Ava Wombles, Rachel McMullen, Maddie Sidwell, Kaitlyn Borrowman

lony (10.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.6 apg), senior forward Cassie Cox (5.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 0.9 apg), junior guard Aubrey Vogel (5.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.3 spg)

Newcomers: I wouldn’t quite say newcomers, but other players to watch besides the above include Allison Vogel (junior guard), Bren Bailey (junior guard), and Bella Smith (junior forward).

About the Returning Starters: Carson and Cassie have had varsity experience for the past three seasons, and that is a plus for the team. Aubrey Vogel will need to step into an expanded role this year as another leader besides Carson and Cassie.

Overview of Newcom-

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2024-25

ers: Not a lot of experience, but we have a good nucleus to help them. Allison Vogel (cousin of Aubrey Vogel) will need to step up to play a major role in the team’s success.

Senior guard/forward Marley Roberts, who was a key reserve last year, will most likely be out for the season because of a second shoulder surgery.

Outlook: Obviously, big shoes to fill as top two scorers/team leaders -- Jayce Privia and Karlie Hoke -have graduated. Privia is now playing for Division II McKendree University. Former assistant coach and now head coach Derek Schnapp may use a variety of lineups to fill the void, including some freshmen. Getting some of the younger players some game-time experience will help them as the season progresses.

The Lady Jays play a very tough non-conference schedule. They play in an opening tournament in Clinton (Dee-Mack, Eureka, Champaign Centennial, and Clinton are among the teams in the field). Other notable non-conference matchups during the regular season: at Dunlap (Mid-Illini Conference) at Canton (Mid-Illini

Conference), Staunton, Pittsfield, Calhoun, at Carrollton, Carlinville. Then obviously the always tough Sangamo Conference schedule.

SOUTH COUNTY VIPERS

Coach: Nick Morrison Last Year’s Record: 17-15 (5-2 MSM)

Key Losses: Marissa Heironimus (6.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg)

Returning Starters: Sophomore guard Callie Wagner (5.3 ppg, 1.3 apg); senior guard Jacee Alexander (5.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.3 apg); sophomore guard Jenna McGath (6.5 ppg, 2 apg); junior forward Savana Howell (5.8 ppg 5.9 rpg apg)

Key Newcomers: Ariah Groves (junior guard), Riley Holloway (junior guard), Skylar Green (sophomore forward), Brielle Johnson (sophomore guard), Natalie Dennis (freshman forward), Alyssa Moore (sophomore guard)

About the Returning Starters: We bring back four fulltime starters from last year. It was their first year getting minutes on varsity, so we had some learning curves throughout the season. We

are hoping all of that experience last year will help us this year. They are still young but played a lot of minutes last year.

Overview of Newcomers:

We have one transfer, Ariah Groves, who will help our team, giving us another point guard and scorer. She started last year as a sophomore at a Class 3A school. The other players played sparingly throughout last year but showed glimpses of what they’re capable of doing to help our varsity team this year.

Season Outlook

Strengths: I think we will excel at pressuring the ball and causing turnovers. We have a lot of quick, athletic guards who are all interchangeable and can pressure the ball.

Areas for Improvement:

I think we will need to improve our rebounding and decision making. Our leading rebounder graduated, and we aren’t the tallest team, so we will need to rebound as a team to be successful. We had a lot of turnovers last year due to playing so many young players. I am hoping they are going to use that experience to cut down on the turnovers.

Expectations: My expectations are to compete for a conference title in the MSM this year. I also expect us to place high in the three tournaments we play in. We are expecting to be over .500 again this year and to have another successful season.

TRIOPIA TROJANS

Coach: Kelley Wessler

Last Year’s Record: 14-15 (3-5 WIVC)

Key Losses: Lilly Pate (5.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg)

Returning Starters: Senior forward Addison Rohn (8.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg)

Junior guard Mylee Tracy (8.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg)

Junior guard Lucie Dion (6.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg)

Junior forward Gabby Myers

Sophomore guard Ava Petefish (5.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg)

Key Newcomers: Four new freshmen are currently battling for playing time and will likely contribute early and often.

About the Returning Starters: Returning starters bring experience, strength, athleticism and a strong competitive nature that will make us strong contenders against

any team.

Overview of Newcomers: Four new freshmen can expect to see a lot of playing time as they bring good energy, speed and strength to this year’s squad.

Season Outlook

Strengths: This year’s team will excel at competing in every game. They are strong and athletic multi-sport athletes. Their basketball confidence has improved over the last couple of years, and they will pick up where they left off and continue to make large strides forward as a team.

Areas for Improvement: The Trojans are constantly battling physical injury and need to improve their ability to stay healthy in order to endure the long season.

Expectations: This team can be expected to fight each game until the end due to their competitive nature and will to improve their record and success from last year.

WEST CENTRAL COUGARS

Coach: Jason Likes

Last Year’s Record: 18-15 (4-3 WIVC)

Key Losses: Bryleigh Fox (18 ppg), Brylee Lawson (12

ppg, 10 rpg), Trystan White

Returning Starters: Senior guard Vickie McGee (4 ppg), Sofie Grubb (5 ppg)

Key Newcomers: Ashlyn Likes (senior guard), Braylee Littig (junior guard), Adrienne Kaufmann (junior guard), Ali Little (sophomore guard)

About the Returning Starters: Vickie and Sofie bring experience, toughness and leadership. They will both have important roles in our success.

Overview of Newcomers: All of the newcomers played pivotal minutes last year and will help us be tough defensively. All of them have the ability to be our leading scorer on any given night.

Season Outlook

Strengths: They will be aggressive defensively and have the ability to shoot outside and get to the rim.

Areas for Improvement: They lack size, so they will have to work very hard to defend the post and win the rebounding game.

Expectations: Look for the Cougars to grow as the season plays out and they discover their identity. They are a fun group to be around and will be fun to watch.
