CHAMBER NEWS AND INFO

A Message From Jennifer Heinzman

Congratulations to The Pioneer Group, our Member of the Month!

Executive Director As we near the end of another year it’s nice to reflect on what we’ve experienced, what we’ve missed, what we’ve accomplished, and how we’ve grown during this trip around the sun. Through a lens of reflection, appreciation, and gratitude, we see more clearly our family and friends and how they enrich our lives; our co-workers and colleagues, and how they push us to be better; the richness and diversity of our community and the beauty of our surroundings. Our Chamber is truly unique as we represent a phenomenal cross-section of businesses and nonprofit organizations, working together for the greater good. I’m grateful for our staff, our Board, our Ambassadors, and our volunteers. I’m surrounded by talented, intelligent, thoughtful people who work hard and are passionate about this community; helping people, supporting local businesses, and building our economy. We enjoy our work; we understand it to be impactful and important; we are here to help. Even more of our members provide financial support by way of programs and sponsorships which help to sustain the chamber. We are so thankful for the time and resources invested in our organization, and the shared goal of improving our quality of life and economic vitality. It is truly impressive. Slowing down long enough to incorporate

gratefulness into our daily routine and into our work is a worthy cause—it really can be as easy as a quick change in perspective; a reminder to yourself amidst the busy-ness that you are here, you are alive, you have so much, you do good work, and life is good. To do this effectively, we follow through by striving for a reasonable work-life balance which leaves time for the things we enjoy and be with the people we love; and we must consider how to help those who do not. We contemplate ways to show gratitude in our actions around the upcoming holidays. We shop local businesses, make handmade gifts, and give through service; we spend Thanksgiving with our families, and we collaborate with our teams to make an impact for those who are less fortunate in our community. We all need more time with family, time outdoors, time to ourselves, and time to reflect. The hustle and bustle of the season will come anyway, in just a few days. But if we remember to pause and be grateful for the good things in our lives and in our work, it will truly make a world of difference. As always, if there is anything we can do for you, please do not hesitate to ask and thank you for all that you do to make this community a better place!

Manufacturing Day 2018 introduces students to trades careers Eighth-grade students from across the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District had the opportunity to take a closer look at skilled trades opportunities in the area as part of Manufacturing Day 2018. Manufacturing Day, a nationwide initiative to aid in creating a positive perception of manufacturing and skilled trades as a career, was organized for its second time locally through a collaboration between the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce, The MecostaOsceola Intermediate School District, The Mecosta County Development Corporation, The Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Osceola Development Corporation. This year, over 600 students from Big Rapids Middle School, Crossroads Charter Academy, Morley Stanwood Middle School, Evart Middle School, Chippewa Hills Intermediate School, and Reed City Middle School visited manufacturers around Mecosta and Osceola Counties. Manufacturers included on the tours included Hamtech, Hanchett, Big Rapids Components—A Haworth Company, Fluid Routing Solutions, Ice mountain, The Pioneer Group Print Division, Galloup Guitars, Vitro, Reed City Group, Original Footwear, and Chippewa Plastics. The students also had the opportunity to tour the Mecosta-Osceola Career Center and learn about some of the career paths available there. One of the chamber of

commerce’s key roles in the community is to make sure that the area has the type of climate that allows for job, wage and economic growth. Without qualified people in these manufacturing positions, growth will remain stagnant, which is why the chamber wants to invigorate the manufacturing climate here in Mecosta County, keeping residents and their families in the area. With this event, the goal of the chamber of commerce is to help manufacturers to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry.

The Chamber would like to thank our community partners: The MecostaOsceola Intermediate School District, The Mecosta County Development Corporation, The Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce, and Osceola County Community Development. Also, thank you

to the Mecosta County Youth Advisory Council for their financial support of this project. Finally, thank you to our local manufacturers for opening your doors to the young people of the community for this special day. We are already looking forward to planning next year’s event!

Hospital holds Festival of Tress fundraiser on Nov. 7 Community members invited to create, donate and bid on holiday decorations Mecosta County residents are invited to display their creativity by creating holiday trees and wreaths for the annual Festival of Trees fundraiser for Spectrum Health Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals. The event will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Holiday Inn of Big Rapids, with guests and organizations bidding on the auction items designed and created for the event. The proceeds will underwrite the free flu vaccination program the hospitals offer to elementary schools in Mecosta and Osceola counties each fall. “We look forward to welcoming people to this fun and festive event again this year,” said Dee VanHorn, of the Spectrum Health Foundation Board. “The decorations created for the auction turn the ballroom into a real holiday wonderland and people have a great time during the spirited

bidding.” “This is a great way for people to showcase their talents for designing and decorating for the holidays, and support a good cause,” added Van Horn. “We’re grateful for the creative and generous people in our community who make this event a success every year!” Laurie Alighire of the Spectrum Health Foundation noted, “Chemical Bank graciously donated 4-foot and 7-foot artificial trees and a variety of wreaths. We so appreciate their generous support.” Donors may pick up a bare tree or wreath from Patterson’s Flowers in downtown Big Rapids, take the item home and decorate it with materials and ornaments of their choice. Ornaments should be glued, wired or otherwise securely attached to the tree, wreath or item to ensure safe transportation.

Other auction items, such as a weekend getaway, sports game or VIP experience, are also welcome as donated auction items. Individuals interesting in making an auction item gift may contact Laurie Alighire at (231) 592-4280 for pickup and delivery information. “Some people may be inspired to create something they’ve seen on Pinterest or at a local craft show,” said Van Horn. “Don’t limit your creativity to trees and wreaths. All decorative holiday items and experiences are welcome!” The live auction event will be held at the Holiday Inn, 1005 Perry Ave, Big Rapids on Wednesday, November 7, in the University Ballrooms A & B. A wine and hors d’oeuvre reception will begin at 6 p.m. The live auction will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at: give.spectrumhealth.org/

festivaloftrees. Donors of items for the auction will receive complimentary tickets to the event. Spectrum Health is a not-for-profit health system, based in West Michigan, offering a full continuum of care through the Spectrum Health Hospital Group, which is comprised of 12 hospitals, including Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital; 180 ambulatory and service sites; 3,600 physicians and advanced practice providers; and Priority Health, a health plan that served one million members in fiscal year 2018. WaterWays events continue through November WaterWays will come to a close this month, but there are many events left to attend, including the grand finale and sturgeon release at Paris Park. Open through Nov. 10, WaterWays is part of the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street initiative designed to bring high quality exhibits to small-town cultural organizations. Artworks is one of six locations in Michigan that will be part of this exciting touring exhibit. This exhibit allows Michigan to rediscover the value of water as both a resource for humans and a cultural symbol. The Muskegon River Watershed, which flows through Big Rapids and all of Mecosta County, has a rich history and has been instrumental in shaping our culture and our way of life. This interactive exhibit will remind our community of the importance of our waterways and encourage us to engage in dialogue and stewardship, and to remind us that water is central to the rituals of our life and that we are

all downstream. Artworks and the Michigan Humanities Council have collaborated with many community organizations to design events, additional exhibits and programs that will deepen our understanding of what the water means to us. • WaterWays associated events and exhibits

includes: • Water Wellness class from 5-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 5 • Complementary Exhibits at Artworks: “Water and You,” “One Fish, Two Fish, See Fish, Saw Fish,” Origami pieces by Linda Stephans • Self-guided tours: Stroll the Riverwalk and

White Pine Trail • Water Literacy Workshop - Water education for teachers • Wood Duck House Construction from 9 a.m. until noon on Nov. 3 at Big L Lumber (must register at Artworks) • Water/Ways Grand Finale – 2 p.m. on Nov. 10 at Paris Park. This event will include a Native American blessing and drumming, release of 10,000 trout and remarks from George Heartwell Educators: If you are interested in a field trip to see the Smithsonian WaterWays exhibit, contact Heidi Kinnally at (231) 796-2420 or artworkseducation@gmail.com. Thanks to TransCanada, Artworks is able to offer bussing for free to the Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District schools, and After-School Art is free in October. For more information on WaterWays or to register for these events, call Artworks at (231) 796-2420.

Paris Park to welcome lake sturgeon back to historic fish ponds The Mecosta County Park Commission and Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Division are continuing to work in partnership to bring the history of Paris Park back to life. It’s been about 45 years since a lake sturgeon last resided within the ponds of Paris Park, but that absence is about to change. On Friday, Oct. 5 a sturgeon from the DNR’s Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery is scheduled to be delivered to the park. A public release of the fish is scheduled to take place at 3:00 p.m. offering park guests the opportunity to view the fish and take photos as it is released to its new home. The concept of bringing a sturgeon back to Paris Park is very exciting for staff and visitors alike. Jeff Abel, Superintendent of the County Parks notes it is a regular occurrence when speaking with guests of Paris Park that they bring up visiting to see the sturgeon when they were children. Visitors bring their families back to the park to create new memories and now will be able to view the sturgeon in the ponds as their families did with them many years ago.

The desire to return the lake sturgeon to the Paris Park Fish Hatchery became a reality this summer when sturgeon housed at the Wolf Lake Visitor Center had outgrown there display tanks. “It is a great opportunity and logical choice to move one these young sturgeon to the Paris Park Hatchery,” said Scott Heintzelman, unit manager with the DNR’s Fisheries Division. “Here it can be viewed and appreciated by thousands of people for many years to come and the message of conservation and recovery will be taught through education and outreach efforts at the facility.” The sturgeon introduction is in addition to a fish stocking partnership already in place between the DNR and County Park system. This spring 20,000 rainbow trout were delivered to the park to be reared through the summer period and released this fall into the Muskegon River. That release date is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m., in conjunction with a programing schedule for the Smithsonian

Museum Waterways exhibit, taking place in Big Rapids this fall. The site of Paris Park is rich in fisheries history. In 1881 the site was the State of Michigan’s second fish-rearing facility constructed and was a major producer of salmon and trout fingerlings. The location was ideally situated near the railroad system which was the primary way fingerlings were distributed around the state. During its peak the hatchery also became a major tourist attraction with 26 ponds in operation and hosting 3,000-5,000 visitors on any given weekend. The site was operated as a hatchery until 1964, when it was closed by the DNR. The Mecosta County Park Commission acquired the site in 1973, refurbished the area

and opened as a park with camping in 1976. The Park Commission is working to revitalize the site back to a tourist destination. Abel states “the value of Paris Park is in its history. The more we can provide educational opportunities related to that history, the more likely people are to stop and relive their past experiences with us.” It is the hope of the Park Commission to once again become a rest stop for those heading north for the weekend and to provide opportunities that will make people want to stay once they arrive. Hospitals soar past fundraising goal for United Way

Left to right: Linda Telfer, Garden Tour co-chair; Melanie Henry, GFWC Big Rapids President, and Jim Eddinger representing the Open Arms Child Advocacy Center

GFWC Big Rapids donates to the Open Arms Child Advocacy Center When the members of GFWC Big Rapids were planning their annual Garden Tour for July 17, 2018, they were made aware of the efforts to organize and implement the Open Arms Child Advocacy Center. All proceeds from the Annual Tour are set aside by the Club to assist organizations and programs in the community who seek assistance from the Club. Based upon the identified need for a Child Advocacy Center in the community and the commitment of GFWC to support programs and projects that benefit families and children, Club members enthusiastically agreed that the Center would be a great place to share a portion of the net proceeds from the 2018 Tour. At a recent meeting, the Club was pleased to present a check for $1,565.00 to Jim Eddinger who represented the Center Board of Directors.

Big Rapids Lions support Constitution Day In support of Constitution Day on Sept. 17, the Big Rapids Lions provided pocket-sized copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence to students in four Big Rapids Schools. More than 250 copies were provided to teachers and students at Big Rapids Middle School, Crossroads Charter Academy, St. Mary Catholic School and St. Peter’s Lutheran School. Included in the pocket versions are a series of flash cards that can be used by the student to enhance their learning and retention of information. Each school has differing plans for how the material will be incorporated into classroom activity throughout the school year. Students will use a variety of techniques from learning how to use sign language for the preamble to applying current events to the constitutional amendments.

Spectrum Health employees in Mecosta and Osceola Counties have stepped up big in supporting United Way, contributing the largest amount ever raised for United Way by the two hospitals. The hospitals set a goal of raising $31,000 for United Way, which would top the total raised in 2017 of $30,100. Through employee pledges and a variety of special events including a petting zoo and basket raffle, the two hospitals raised an astounding $40,190 in the fundraising campaign, which ran from September 1 through September 30. “The United Way is a vital part of our community, and Spectrum Health is proud to support them in their mission to improve the lives of those around us,” said campaign co-chair Sarah Neubecker, communications manager for the two hospitals. “We were amazed to exceed our goal by more than

$9,000! That shows the dedication and commitment our staff has to support their community.” In addition to giving monetary pledges, more than 20 Spectrum Health staff also participated in a Day of Caring on September 7 by volunteering their time to help with service projects at Rose Lake Youth

Camp, Mecosta Senior Center and Habitat for Humanity, three key organizations that are supported by the United Way. Spectrum Health’s campaign was known as a ‘pace setter’ campaign for the Mecosta-Osceola campaign, which launched at the end of September.

STAGE-M presents "The Nutcracker: A Play" Nov. 11-18 at Crossroads Charter Academy Auditorium

This November Stage-M presents a classic tale of adventure, based on a German tale called “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” The title may bring to mind the better-known Russian ballet, but this production follows the dashing adventures of Marie and Fritz Stahlbaum and their fantastic trip with the mysterious Herr Drosselmeier into the strange world of Mousalia. There the trio works to make a daring rescue in the land of the many-headed Mouse Prince and his mother Madame Mouserinks, the gloomy Catacombs, a giant Spider, a glowing magic sword, and an epic battle to save the young man who was the Nutcracker. This Christmas classic is not the children’s story portrayed by the ballet, but the Grand Adventure upon which the ballet is based where good and evil clash, the pure of heart can save a life, and love can work miracles. It’s a story all ages will enjoy and includes actors from grade schoolers to grandparents. Take your magical journey to see “The Nutcracker: A Play” November 15 – 17 at 7:30 pm and Nov. 18 at 2:30 pm at Crossroads Charter Academy Auditorium. Adult Tickets $11. Student Tickets $5. Purchase your tickets at Patterson’s Flowers, The Old Pioneer Store and Emporium, by calling (231) 592-TIXX, or online stage-m.org.

Especially with globalization that allows for cross-cultural interactions, my goal is to search for the ideal balance of the different cultures that contribute to the ‘third-space’ as discussed by Homi Bhabha.
