LYNNE SCHEIBLE SAYS ARTWORKS “SEE YOU LATER!” NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR the most passionate, caring and connected individuals…..or it used to be……and I know that will happen again soon.
Lynne Scheible, Artworks executive director for the last five years, is retiring in July. She leaves Artworks seeking her next adventure. Here’s what she had to say about her experience: “Well, that has to be the worst move you could possibly make!” This from six year-old grandson, Grady, when he realized that I was retiring from Artworks! “I love it there,” he said. Both Grady and his brother Rowan have pretty much grown up at Artworks. Any event that happened at Artworks during the Festival of the Arts--they were there. Festival of Banners-they were there. After School Art--they were there. New exhibit and a scavenger--yup, they were there and knew it would get them a treat the front desk. I have adored sharing everything Artworks with them. It’s been an honor and a blessing to be part of the Artworks team for the last five and a half years. Crazy to think how fast this time has gone by. These past few months have been very difficult for me as I have walked this empty building and worked from home. My favorite part of Artworks is the people and it has been so quiet. I miss the pitter patter of little feet and messy hands from after school art kids, the excited voice of an artist that just sold a piece of their work, or one of our volunteers at the front desk working with a guest. Artworks is so much more than its many walls, the space inside is filled with
I had the chance to walk the building yesterday with our new executive director, Matt Hildebrand, and his two oldest children, Colleen and Anna. I want you to know that you are in great hands. Matt will bring new excitement and energy to Artworks, and I could see his head spinning when he left as he saw all the possibilities. He arrived with a fresh loaf of bread that he baked, and I thought, “I like this guy already.”
round staff of 25+ and a seasonal staff of 100+. He has experience in sales and marketing, budgeting, leading teams, organizing events, and fund development. Another asset that he brings to the position is his experience as an Evart City Councilman, negotiating contracts, city planning as well as grant proposal development.
I am often looking at symbolism of “things,” and I looked up bread: “Bread is used in many cultures to highlight the relationship between the nourishment of the body and the nourishment of the soul. Bread can symbolize procreation, and therefore creativity and growth” (thedreamwell.com). I found that connection to be pretty cool, and I know that more creativity and more growth will happen at Artworks under his leadership. (Sidenote: I received another loaf of bread on the same day from Ruth Vermeer…now isn’t that interesting!!)
He has a long history of work with non-profit organizations and believes in a variety of initiatives that build community engagement. His proven record of successful collaborations, community-building, and team management speaks directly to the Artworks Values and promises to continue the Artworks legacy of vitalizing our community through the arts and humanities.
I have shared many times that I grew up in a military family. Our lives were filled with hello and good-bye. What I learned, however, instead of saying good-bye, was to say, “See you later.” In the Air Force world, you never knew when your paths might cross again. I know that our paths will continue to cross as I plan to stay connected in whatever way might be helpful. I have teased Roxanne Cullen that I would love to be her assistant with the exhibits!! And I can’t wait to work in the gift shop! So, my dear friends. See you later! It’s been one of the finest gifts of my life to work with you all. I believe in our mission with all my heart, “vitalize the community through the arts and humanities.” I will continue to bring strength and energy and passion to support our community. Lynne
The Artworks Board of Directors is pleased to introduce the new Executive Director, Matthew Hildebrand. Matthew brings a wealth of experience to the position having served as the Activities and Guest Retreat Director at SpringHill Camps in Evart, MI since 2016 where he trained and supervised staff, managed and created budgets for multiple departments, maintained a year-
He will begin work on June 15, allowing for two weeks to work directly with Lynne Scheible who will retire July 1. Artworks is planning a number of opportunities to introduce him to the community

SAFE BUSINESS PLEDGE PROGRAM TO ROLL OUT IN MECOSTA COUNTY The Big Rapids Region and Mecosta County has always been known for its friendly communities offering their unique blend of small town charm and warm hospitality. We are a welcomed destination for travelers looking to just get away from it all with our amazing trails, pristine waterways, music, arts and numerous recreational venues. “The onset of COVID -19 these past few months has certainly changed our lives along with our daily tasks and activities,” stated Connie Koepke – Executive Director for the Mecosta County Visitors Bureau. “We are certainly in the midst of an unprecedented time that none of us expected or prepared for. As we are all transitioning to our new and altered lifestyles of social distancing, increased hand washing and sanitizer usage as well as wearing face masks we are seeing improvements. As parts of our economy are starting to re-open, it’s important now more than ever to collaborate and work together on bringing back our guests, visitors and local economy.”
Head to www.mecostacounty.com to the events tab for dates & to join the Chamber Connect group!
The Mecosta County Visitors Bureau’s Safe Business Pledge is designed to help visitors and locals know what precautions our community as a whole is taking in helping keep everyone as safe as possible during this Coronavirus pandemic. It also assists area businesses in staying consistent with their safety protocols.
The program is quite simple to participate in. Your businesses reviews the standard list of safety protocols, pledges that they will follow them, and then your business will receive a personalized certificate to display at your business. All businesses making the pledge will also be listed on the Big Rapids Region Safe Business Pledge Members page with a direct link to your business. The Safe Pledge program is not designed as a guarantee that visitors will not contract the Coronavirus (or other possible respiratory infections) but is designed to help provide a higher comfort level to everyone visiting our communities and their businesses. Knowing that we are all following unified safety measures, in an effort to help slow the spread of contagious infections, only re-enforces what a great area we are to visit and spend time with family and friends. The Mecosta County Visitors Bureau will also be sharing the Safe Business Pledge, along with the participating businesses, in numerous marketing venues throughout the state to help increase visitor spending in our area. If you are a business that is interested in participating in the Safe Business Pledge program, you can reach the Visitors Bureau at: assistant@bigrapids.org or information@bigrapids.org, or by calling 231.796.7640.

SMALLER ARTWORKS SUMMER CAMPS AIM TO CONNECT STUDENTS TO THEIR CREATIVITY Register ASAP, only 30 total slots available Students ages 7-15 will have the chance to express their creativity through smaller, socially distanced, hands-on art during Artworks summer camps in July and August. With each camp capped at 10, campers can explore their creativity while being spread out in the Artworks Education Studio. During pottery camp in late July, campers will carefully craft clay pots and bowls to glaze and take home to their families after camp ends. This mostpopular Artworks camp allows students to work with artist Ruth Vermeer to craft and glaze unique pieces. But pottery is not the only camp available. “We have S.T.E.A.M. for the first time this summer,” said Heidi Kinnally, Artworks director of education. “In S.T.E.A.M., campers will learn that art and design are essential components to learning and understanding the world.” Registration is open for all three weeks of summer camp. The dates are below. All camp times are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Campers should bring their lunch, or parents may purchase a $5 lunch from Three Girls Bakery daily during check-in. · Printmaking, $100, July 10-12
· Handbuilt Pottery, $125, July 28-30 · S.T.E.A.M., $100, August 11-13 For more information on camp sessions and/ or to register, visit artworksinbigrapids. org, call (231) 796-2420, or stop by The Painted Turtle Gift Shop. Registration typically closes the week before a camp session. Area residents can help with Artworks summer camps by donating to the scholarship fund. Scholarships are available for students identified by area art teachers as gifted in art and with financial need. In past summers, four or five students have attended the camp free of charge. “We think providing creative opportunities to children is very important,” she said. “Artworks exists to help connect our community with their creativity. Summer camps provide us an opportunity for additional community engagement.” In addition to summer camp programming, Artworks also features new exhibits every other month.
