Midland Center for the Arts is the Great Lakes Bay Region’s cultural destination for world-class entertainment at the intersection of science and art. It’s a place where art, science, history, music, theatre, dance, films, camps, classes and professional world-class entertainment are under one roof.

The Center for the Arts features two performance venues, pop-up art and hands-on science exhibits, studio school, a historical museum, gift shop, and the Pendulum Lounge where patrons can relax with friends and refreshments before most performances.

Established in 1899 as a home for Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow and family, the 110-acre Dow Gardens now welcomes thousands of guests per year.

Visitors are invited to:

Daily admission is $15 for adults, $5 for students 4-17 or with a student ID card. Children 3 and under are free. An annual admission card is available for $30.

Attractions: Dahlia Hill

Dahlia Hill Society of Midland plants 3,000 tubers annually with over 300 unique varieties, at the corner of Main Street and Orchard Road.

It has long been an established destination for learning how to grow dahlias, taking photographs, resting from nearby rail trail activities, meeting with others, and enjoying the benefits of a nature setting.

The terraced garden is maintained by a community of volunteers beginning each June. During the blooming months of late summer through the first frost of October, the garden’s tapestry of color is open to the public free of charge, seven days a week from dawn to dusk. The garden was started in 1992

with tubers donated by Charles Breed and planted on land provided by Bill Fisher. In 1998, Dahlia Hill Society of Midland was established as a nonprofit to maintain and preserve this unique garden. Every growing season, Dahlia Hill’s tubers multiply, providing additional tubers to be sold each May.

Two buildings adjacent to Dahlia Hill’s garden house the art of Breed, who was a longtime Midland resident and artist. His art is also found amongst the dahlias, which includes four large cast aluminum sculptures representing the seasons of the year.

Dahlia Hill Society recently launched a new website at http://dahliahill.org/ dahliahill.org.  A unique feature entitled

the “Dahlia Finder” provides gardeners a wealth of information about numerous varieties. The website also contains information about growing dahlias and the benefits of nature on overall health and well-being.

Attractions: Midland County Museums

Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art

Located in Midland Center for the Arts, 1801 W. St. Andrews Road, the museum occupied nearly 30,000 square feet of space and featured rotating exhibition galleries and a permanent hands-on exhibition, The Hall of Ideas, combining elements of science, technology, history and art.

Following the 2020 flood, the Center for the Arts has worked tirelessly with the local, state and national levels to secure the necessary funding to repair and improve the facilities. During the interim period, the Center for the Arts continues to bring exciting and engaging exhibits of Art and Science inside the lobby spaces and IFF STEM exhibit room. The Studio School offers art classes and other related experiences as part of a yearround curriculum. Admission is required.

Midland County Historical Society

The Midland County Historical Society is the home for all things history in Midland County.

Following the historic flooding events in May 2020, the Historical Society rescued all of the items in its collection, which are currently located at Midland Center for the Arts. Sanford Centennial Museum

The museum is located at the corner of Smith and Saginaw in Sanford. It is open Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Hours are Saturdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m.

There is no admission or parking

The museum features turn-of-thecentury buildings including the main museum housed at Riverside School, the Smith family log cabin, Clare Z. Bailey chapel, Sanford town hall, Olson general store, Felix school, a Veterans Memorial, a bunk house, two vintage cabooses, a railroad switch engine and box car, covered bridge and a Big Wheel Log Hauler.

The Dow Event Center, located at 303 Johnson St., Saginaw, offers area residents hundreds of entertainment, sports, cultural and educational opportunities annually.

Performances at the center have included Elvis Presley, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Kid Rock, The Harlem

Globe Trotters, Sesame Street Live, Disney on Ice, Jerry Seinfeld, George Carlin, Les Misérables, The Nutcracker Ballet, Rent and Riverdance.

The Saginaw Spirit play more than 30 hockey games each year in Wendler Arena, which is part of the Dow Event Center. The Spirit also hosted the annual Memorial Cup from May 23 to June 2,

Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear was on display at the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science & Art in early 2020.

Attractions: Chippewa Nature Center

Chippewa Nature Center, located at 400 S. Badour Road in Midland, offers indoor and outdoor programs including interpretive naturalist-led nature walks and paddling and hiking trips, as well as Nature Day Camp, Nature Preschool, workshops and school and Scout programs.

The Visitor Center offers free admission and houses the Wildlife Viewing Area, River Overlook, a hands-on, familyfriendly Ecosystem Gallery and Nature Discovery Area, the Bur Oak Theatre featuring short interpretive films, a Nature Center Store and free wi-fi.

CNC’s Nature Preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds meets developmental needs and builds an appreciation for the natural world with two-, threeand four-day half-day classes. A new $5.2 million Nature Education Center is being built to meet existing and growing demand for Nature Day Camp, Nature Preschool and school programs, which are among CNC’s most impactful youth programs. The new facility will enhance opportunities for positive nature connections for youth throughout the region for years to come. Completion is scheduled for spring 2025.

CNC offers 19 miles of trails open year-round. The 3.5-mile paved Chippewa Trail for non-motorized traffic (including bikes and wheelchairs) joins CNC with downtown Midland at the Tridge. The Nature Center allows hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing (over seven miles groomed seasonally) on its foot trails, and the paved, half-mile Arbury Trail also is wheelchair accessible. Pets are not allowed on CNC’s trails.

At the Wetlands Area, visitors can get

a bird’s-eye view of three marshes from the two-story observation tower, with a universally accessible ramp to the first level. The Chippewa River can be accessed from the canoe/kayak universal access site on Chippewa River Road, as well as from the canoe/kayak launch along Homestead Road.

CNC’s launches are open May 1-Oct. 15; hours vary. Visitors of all ages will also enjoy The Woods Nature Play Area, a space that provides a natural setting for creative, unstructured outdoor play. The 16-acre Howard L. Garrett Arboretum offers more than 100 species of Michigannative trees and shrubs.

The Homestead Farm is made up of three restored log buildings. The Sugarhouse is open free of charge every weekend in March from 1-4 p.m. Visitors can watch as sap is boiled down to make maple syrup.

The Alden B. Dow Center for Creativity & Enterprise at Northwood University bridges global entrepreneurial communities to the free-enterprise leadership and business acumen available through Northwood’s students and faculty.

It is widely recognized as a leader in the integration of free-

market creativity, innovation and strategy with entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial practices. The physical structure known as the Center for Creativity & Enterprise (Whiting Home) is a creative and inspiring environment.

The center is a vital part of how the university advances its mission

by Homestead Sundays from 1-5 pm for free, hands-on activities at the 1870s Homestead Farm, which includes a log cabin, one-room log schoolhouse, timber frame barn, heirloom garden, children’s garden, root cellar and more. From MayNovember, visitors can see cows, pigs, chicken and sheep.

The new Greater Midland Community Center opened its doors to the public on May 15.

Greater Midland Community Center is an operating unit of Greater Midland, which, like the center, is located at 2205 Jefferson Ave. in Midland.

-Child Watch for members and guests to bring their children for 90 minutes of care and activities in a supervised setting while the adults are able to participate in wellness and other activities on campus.

-With the help of United Way and in partnership with AARP, Greater Midland Community Center hosts one of the largest tax assistance programs in the state of Michigan.

-With the support of United Way, Greater Midland provides sliding-fee scholarships for qualifying families and individuals.

Attractions: North Midland Family Center

The Greater Midland North Family Center provides programs and services for individuals in northern Midland County.

The center, an operating unit of Greater Midland, is located at 2601 E. Shearer Road, adjacent to the Mills Township Park complex. It is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and closed Saturday and Sunday. Information, 989-282-1622.

Creative 360 is a nonprofit community arts and wellness organization at 5501 Jefferson in Midland, founded in 1994. Its ongoing programs include Artshop, a fully inclusive arts curriculum; Creative Theatre Company, a performing arts program for youth; Yes We Can!, honoring those 80 and older who have made a difference in our community; a full roster of arts and wellness classes for adults; and Creative Kids, afterschool arts classes for K-5. Creative 360 also has an onsite gallery featuring new exhibits every 6 to 8 weeks, a yearly concert series and is the home of the Blast from the Past Big Band.

Greater Midland Coleman Family Center, at 4839 N. Coleman Schools Drive, provides programs and services for children, adults and families in Coleman and the surrounding area.

The center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m Friday, and closed Saturday and Sunday.

The center, which is an operating unit of Greater Midland, offers the following programs:

The Great Lakes Loons, based in Midland, are a minor league baseball high-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Loons played their inaugural game at Dow Diamond on April 13, 2007. Over 324,000 fans flocked to Dow Diamond – the Loons home stadium at 825 E. Main St. -- that first season, and over 2 million total since. They won their first championship in 2016.

Dow Diamond has established itself as one of the premier minor league stadiums in the country, earning several awards in the process.

Since its opening, the stadium has hosted about 70 Loons home games each season, as well as 1,000 concerts, formal functions, and other special events. The Saginaw Spirit are a junior hockey team with home ice in Wendler Arena at the Dow Event Center, 303 Johnson St., Saginaw. They are members of the West Division of the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League, one of the major junior leagues of the Canadian Hockey League.

The 2023-24 regular season ran from late September to late March. The Spirit finished first in their division and hosted the 2024 Memorial Cup.

MyMichigan Medical Center Midland is a 324 licensed-bed hospital located on 225 acres of wooded campus.

The Medical Center in Midland is the flagship of the awardwinning MyMichigan Health system, which was recognized by Forbes in 2023 and 2022 as one of America’s Best Employers by State.

Health Care: Grief Support Groups

Midland area grief and loss support groups are provided free by the Midland Catholic parishes, Memorial Presbyterian Church, MyMichigan Hospice and Heartland Hospice Services. The three Catholic parishes host an adult group recovery process that is Christian in focus and open to all. Meetings take place throughout the year at one of the parishes. Blessed Sacrament Parish also offers an eightweek group recovery process for adults of any faith in the process of divorce. It takes place annually from September to November.

Senior Services is a private nonprofit organization that provides programs and services for residents of Midland County who are age 60 and older. The agency is located at 4700 Dublin Ave., Midland.
