Lansing Community College Midland College Guide 2019 College is expensive, and the cost seems to increase with each passing year. As tuition increases, other costs of attending college have followed suit. According NBC news, the cost of college textbooks has risen 1,041 percent since 1977, an increase three times the rate of inflation. In the U.S., students spend more than $14 billion on college textbooks each year. Thankfully, open educational resources (OERs) have emerged at colleges and universities as a means of offsetting the costs of books and other academic materials. The United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization defines OERs as “any type of educational materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open license.” According to the College Board, a national non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating student success, a full-time student at a four-year college or university can expect to spend more than $1,200 per year on books and supplies. In 2017, the average student will spend between $1,230 and $1,390 on supplies and textbooks listed in their course requirements. Between 2002 and 2013, the cost of college textbooks rose 82 percent, an increase based entirely on the captive necessities of college students irrespective of inflation. Creative Commons USA reports that the rising costs of college and the textbooks required for student success has prompted more than a dozen states to introduce legislation specifically crafted to alleviate the economic burden placed on students. A 2017 survey conducted by Inside Higher Ed concluded 85 percent of students avoided buying textbooks specifically because of the cost, and half of those responding stated their grades had suffered because they could not afford their books. Nationally, colleges have started to take notice. Since 2015, students at Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) have been afforded the opportunity to take up to 30 classes without buying a single textbook. CVCC reports as a direct result of the initiative, students have saved more than $250,000. Locally, Lansing Community College (LCC) is challenging the overwhelming burden college textbook costs places on students. LCC leads Michigan in making OER available to students. As of Sept. 1, 2017, LCC has saved its students $1,045,600 by committing to OER. Seventy-four professors and instructors teach 150 courses and sections at LCC using OERs. A 2017 study conducted by Rice University concluded 3.5 million students have saved more than $340 million because of OERs since 2012. The study predicted that 1.5 million students will save an estimated $145 million because of OERs in 2018, and 11,000 faculty members across more than 4,000 colleges and universities will have adopted OER initiatives. Michigan State University (MSU) adopted an OER initiative in 2018, and the response from faculty developing the materials has been robust, says Arlene Weismantel, Senior Associate Director of MSU Libraries. “In order to increase the use of OER and encourage instructor innovation in delivering learning materials to students, MSU provides (instructors) incentives to replace traditional textbooks,” Weismantel said. These awards especially encourage OER use across all sections of high-enrollment courses in order to impact a significant number of students.” In addition to saving students money, OER liberates faculty from the confines of a textbook-centered course plan. Professors and instructors are free to create course materials that present essential educational concepts with the most relevant, modern media and materials available. OER allows both instructors and students to engage with limitless academic sources, which both increases the quality of instruction and the engaged interests of students. Weismantel believes that MSU’s OER initiatives will address the significant needs of students who find the high cost of academic materials challenges their scholastic capacity. “MSU’s OER grant program aims to support and recognize curricular innovation and promote resource alternatives that mitigate textbook costs for students,” she said. “High quality classroom resources might not be affordable or accessible (without OER).”

Research, Partnerships and Internships CMU students graduate career-ready At CMU, students are more than learners and faculty are more than teachers. Through mentorship and collaboration, CMU students and faculty are working together to identify and solve problems with worldwide impact, lead groundbreaking research, gain hands-on experience, and graduate career-ready. There are experiential learning opportunities across all of CMU’s more than 200 undergraduate academic programs. Students have access to the 227 laboratory facilities starting their freshman year on campus. In those labs, students are examining antioxidants to find more effective ways to prevent cancer, studying the effects of stress and aging on reproduction to help to solve fertility problems, determining how to cut off energy to a cell’s mitochondrial DNA to stop the spread of diseases, and researching how to deliver DNA to cells affected by brain disorders to treat diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. “Being able to do cancer research at only 19 years old is amazing. I get to make a big difference,” said Gretchen Holtgrefe, a biochemistry major who started researching at CMU during her freshman year. While researching with faculty, students are developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They also are able to translate the concepts they learn in class to the real-world examples in front of them.
providing career training for those hoping to pursue jobs in cultural resource management. Their work also helps preserve local heritage sites and creates a greater public appreciation for them. CMU’s student-driven research also includes a mobile weather observation vehicle outfitted with computers and meteorological instruments to measure temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, and more. This allows students to follow weather-related cold fronts and collect data about storms. CMU is the only Michigan university to have such a vehicle.
Mobile weather observation vehicle Students across campus are working collaboratively to help educators position themselves to help children cope with traumatic experiences called Adverse Childhood Experiences. Research has shown that children who have a high number of ACEs are more likely to struggle in school and have lifelong health effects. CMU students are working to empower
people across the country with tools to not only understand the effects of ACEs but also counteract the negative experiences. CMU’s future educators are taking a trauma-informed approach to consider the root cause of student behavior and create safe learning spaces. Additionally, students participate in a workshop series where they learn about how stress and trauma affect brain development, what it can look like in their classrooms, and how to help children understand and cope with ACEs. As a Creative Action Partner, CMU collaborates with the Traverse City Film Festival and provides students with on-site learning experiences and resume-building opportunities. CMU students earn internships with the festival, which is fully run by college students and volunteers. From keeping things running smoothly to producing real, meaningful pieces used throughout the event, students showcase the skills they’ve learned and walk away with film credit on their resumes. Not only does this take learning outside the lecture hall, it helps lay the foundation for a future career in film with finished, professional pieces that can be sent to potential employers. With countless opportunities and hands-on experiences, it’s easy to see why more than 18,000 employers recruit CMU students. Their future starts at CMU. Fire Up Chips!
At CMU’s Biological Station on Beaver Island, students are working on Great Lakes preservation and conservation. Students are able to spend their summers researching ways to clean up potential environmental damage that might be caused by an accidental oil spill, conduct wetlands research through a grant from the EPA, and investigate what is causing the disappearance of Great Lakes whitefish in hopes of restoring their population. CMU students have been cataloging and excavating a site at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron, Michigan, since 2016. Students are able to engage with park visitors, sharing their findings and answering questions,
