Overall, Midland is a safe place to raise a family with growing academic and athletic opportunity for all age groups, no matter which side of the city you live in. We have been all over the country and even out of the country in Canada – Midland has supported us, and it just suits our vibe. What one person has influenced you the most? My mom and my wife – They have done more, supported more, fought for me, prayed for me and loved me harder than space is available to explain. What is your biggest goal in life? Keep having fun doing what I love with people I love most – and leave a positive impact on the youth while doing it. What do you do to relieve stress? A good workout, a good Spotify playlist or just a good impromptu date night with Steph in town to decompress. What are your three favorite movies? In no particular order: Man on Fire, Bad Boys II, Shawshank Redemption. Name a book that has influenced you. The Bible. It is not necessarily something that I read or talk about daily or even weekly, but growing up, it was the foundation of our house — no questions asked. So, I always carry it with me and it for sure shapes my faith, effort, character, patience — and hopefully it will do the same and more for my family and kids. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? Raphael from Ninja Turtles. He wasn’t afraid to get a little aggressive or unconventional to get the job done. He was also super loyal. I had a Ninja Turtles birthday parties growing up, watched all the movies, had all of the coloring books and named my first dog, Raphy. What quote do you live by? Top 20 Under 40 Overall Winners 20 Under 40 Overall Winners: No. 16 Brad Schalk

20 Under 40 Overall Winners: No. 15 Taylor Flowers What is the best aspect of your job? Making people feel like the absolute best versions of themselves. Helping people with their confidence is very important to me.

With my office downtown on Main Street now, and being able to see the support of all the local businesses, and the excitement of new businesses and ideas happening, it makes me very proud to part of what is going on in Midland.

Why is your community a good place to live and work? Midland is so special to me. People really take pride in their living environment here, they respect and support one another regardless of age, gender, or race. Midland is a cohesive place to build a clientele and have a thriving business.

What one person has influenced you the most? The one person who has influenced me the most has been my father, Mark Schalk. He is by far the greatest man I know. There is no one who works harder than him, and there is not one member of my immediate or extended family that he has not extended a hand to help. When something is broke, he is who everyone calls to fix it. He encouraged me from a young age to always have the confidence in myself to succeed and try to be great at what I do, regardless if the odds seem too big to overcome. In sports, he taught me to swing hard and not just try to try to make contact with the ball. He also taught me the importance of honesty and integrity, and I still aspire to be like him to this day.

What one person has influenced you the most? My mother. She has always encouraged me to work hard and never give up.

What is your biggest goal in life? My goal is to help change the stigma of the beauty industry. I’d consider myself a new aged stylist. I care about health, humanity, wealth, and peace. I want to create an environment that reflects that.

Whether it is the “American Dream” of buying their first home, pulling out some equity to do a remodel or put in a pool, or maybe building or upgrading to a larger home with more space for a growing family, I get to play a small role in helping someone achieve that. I also love teaching my clients about different loan programs available that they may not even know about. That way they are knowledgeable and comfortable with their options and allows them make the best decision to achieve their goals. Why is your community a good place to live and work? Midland has always been an amazing community to both grow up in and raise a family in. I went through the full circuit as a Siebert Bulldog, Jefferson Husky, Dow Charger, and Northwood Timberwolf growing up. Not only are there a ton of great organizations and activities for both kids and adults, but also our town is always ready and willing to come together when there is a need, and we are always willing support one another.

Up and Comers & specialty winners 20 Under 40: Porter is MDN Ambassador Pick

20 Under 40: Geierman is MDN Pick and learning more about their “why.” It’s an honor to work with such an inspiring group of people. I also love teaching and inspiring people through fitness and nutrition.

Here’s more information about this popular mentor. What is the best aspect of your job? The best aspect of my job is being able to work directly with the students. Being able to help give them tools for success and watch them grow into thriving young adults is really what makes the job so great.

Tyler Porter, 29, is the program manager at The ROCK Center for Youth Development.

O

riginally from Owosso, Porter has a wife named Heather and a 16-month-old son, Liam. As program manager, Porter writes, plans and facilitates content for our Discover You program, which is a social and emotional learning program for middle and high school students. “I travel to different schools throughout the tri-counties and run our program in the classrooms, though I mostly work in Midland,” he added. “I also train and manage staff who facilitate our curriculum as well.” Porter received a number of reader nominations, and has been named the MDN Ambassador Pick for the Daily News’ 20 Under 40 contest, which highlights younger professionals in our local communities. The Daily News thanks Mike Vezina, president/owner McCreadie Sales Printwear & Promotion Plus in Midland, for being our ambassador.

Why is your community a great place to live and work? Midland is such a terrific place to live and work because it really is the definition of community. So many people and organizations are here and willing to help each other at all times. The amount of non-profits in this community that exist simply to aid those in need is inspiring. I am incredibly grateful to find myself amongst so many amazing neighbors. Name one person who has inspired you the most. So many people have had a huge impact on me in my life. My wife, my family, my boss, my coworkers, and even the students that I work with. But none have inspired or motivated me as much as my 16-month-old son, Liam. He has taught me so much about myself that I didn’t know and helped me grow in so many ways, and he’s only a year old! I have gained so much patience and perspective in this past year thanks to him, and I’m looking forward to what he will continue to teach me in the future. Name a quote you live by. “Life begins outside of your comfort zone” is a quote I have lived by for most of my life. I was pretty shy while growing up and I really disliked that about myself. I heard this quote one day and it helped push me outside of my bubble and try new things. I believe living by this quote helped me be the person that I am today.

Megan Geierman, 27, is the nutrition program director for Senior Services, Midland Council on Aging (primary) and Midland Country Club (secondary).

S

he is responsible for overseeing the Meals on Wheels Program, as well as the five activity and dining centers for Midland County. In her free time, she works as a nutrician consultant at the Midland Country Club and is a Barre Intensity fitness instructor. She is engaged to Jamie Crockett of Midland, and has been named the Midland Daily News Pick for the 20 Under 40 contest highlighting younger professionals in our local community. Here’s more information about this popular dietician.

What is the best aspect of your job? The best aspect of my work at Senior Services is knowing that our services matter and the work that the agency does makes a difference in the lives of Midland County older adults each day. More specifically, I enjoy interacting directly with the older adults and our volunteers. I love hearing their stories

Why is your community a good place to live and work? Since moving to Midland in 2016, I have enjoyed the aspects of both city and rural living. Personally, I love being able to spend a Saturday enjoying all of my favorite activities in one day — from rollerblading on the rail trail, visiting the Farmer’s Market, shopping downtown, and more. This community is an even better place to work with all of the support and motivated individuals that I get to work with. Since joining the Senior Services’ team, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with many of our non-profit partners. It is such a rewarding feeling to be able to work with driven, like-minded peers to accomplish a common goal. I have never witnessed organizations come together to help each other like this community does. What one person has influenced you the most? Why is your community a good place to live and work? Born in Midland, I feel honored to be setting up shop in the town that raised me. Many Midland resources like MPS, Juvenile Care Center, Day Treatment, Delta’s possible dream, Community Mental Health’s MST program, foster care, a couple other tri-city programs I was part of did a fantastic job giving me the internal tools for success. Something that continues to drive me is the endless efforts the faculty members of these programs poured into me as a troubled youth. I strive to show them their efforts are not wasted and even more so, I hope to show other juveniles that there is hope to make something of themselves even if they come from a childhood of hardship. What one person has influenced you the most? My great grandma Wilma Schneider has influenced me tremendously. Being from the depression era, she was a strong believer in working hard for your money and making the most of each dollar. She taught me at a young age to save a little bit of each paycheck, and if I don’t have cash for it to save until I did. This played a huge role in opening a new business without a loan, something that is nearly unheard of! She has taught me that you can have whatever life you want, as long as you work hard and are smart with your earnings. Most importantly, she passed along her wisdom to treat everyone with the same level of respect. What quote do you live by? “Do the best you can with what you have today ... Then do even better tomorrow!”

What is the best aspect of your job? I love that I have the opportunity every day to pour into people — to support our community, love on our customers, and serve our team members.

Why is your community a good place to live and work? Pretty sure I could talk all day about this! But I think at its core, our community loves to support small businesses and it strikes this very unique balance between a big city and small town. The relationships and the size of Midland make it a very tight-knit community, but the amenities that we have are usually things you can only find in larger cities. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention the mind-boggling number of parks that we have! Our family absolutely loves all the parks — especially all the fun “secret” parks tucked away in the neighborhoods. What one person has influenced you the most? Jesus — he was and is the ultimate servant leader. I want to serve and love others the way he did. What quote do you live by? “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” — Frederick Buechner

What aspects do you enjoy about your job? I love being able to make a difference in peoples’ daily lives by getting them back to enjoying their favorite activities.
