BACKYARD BIRDING IS POPULAR Birds are an important part of human culture and history.
to the popularity of bird watching around the home.
Since the 17th century, more than 120 species have become extinct due to human activity. However, of all the wildlife in the United States, birds have attracted the biggest following, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
A majority of photos submitted were taken of birds in backyards, front yards and on decks. Michigan is home to a variety of species, so bird watchers definitely don’t have to go far.
“Approximately 45.1 million people observed birds around the home and on trips in 2016,” according to a 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and WildlifeAssociated Recreation by the Fish and Wildlife Service. “A large majority, 86 percent (38.7 million), observed wild birds around the home, while 36 percent (16.3 million) took trips away from home to observe wild birds.”

For the second year, the News Advocate held its bird photo contest and can attest
With a limit of three submissions per photographer, this year’s contest pulled in around 100 photos. Our bird count shows 40 different species of birds from Michigan all the way to Aruba, and Arizona and Niagara Falls. One photo even shows Muddy the Mudhen, the mascot of the Toledo Mud Hens baseball team, at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio. Thank you to everyone who submitted photos and to our advertisers, and congratulations to our winner! Michelle Graves, Managing Editor
