Signs of septic system malfunction

H

omeowners recognize that their work is never done. Homes require maintenance that runs the gamut from daily tasks like cleaning kitchen countertops to more significant undertakings like replacing roofs. For many homeowners, keeping their homes running smoothly involves tending to septic systems.

Estimates from various sources indicate that roughly one in five homes in the United States has a septic system. Homeowners who live in areas with regional sewage systems may not give much thought to the operation and maintenance of their wastewater and disposal system. But that responsibility typically rests squarely on the shoulders of homeowners whose homes have septic systems. Learning to maintain septic systems so they operate safely and efficiently is essential. Homeowners should know that recognizing signs of septic system malfunction is vital to avoiding potentially costly, messy accidents that can put the health of humans and local wildlife in jeopardy. What happens when a septic system malfunctions? The Washington State Department of Health notes that a malfunctioning septic system is a threat to the health of both humans and animals as well as the environment. When a septic system is malfunctioning, untreated sewage can be released and end up in places where it shouldn’t be, such as groundwater, surface water and marine water. That’s true even if it’s not visible to the naked eye. Humans and animals are in danger when septic systems malfunction because untreated sewage contains pathogens and other contaminants that can make them sick. Homeowners with septic systems should make tending to those systems part of their routine home maintenance.

What are the signs of a malfunctioning septic system? The DOH of Washington State notes that properly maintained septic systems should provide reliable service for many years. Since this pie has a sanding-sugar top, you can use any flavor of filling you like and the dough of your choice. You also can use a store-bought pie.

Making a jack-o’-lantern themed pie is even easier when pumpkin — which is an especially popular flavor this time of year — is the pie of choice. Find your favorite pumpkin pie recipe or purchase a store-made one and some refrigerated pie dough to add some Halloween flair with this instructional guide for “Chibi Pumpkin Pie” courtesy of “Pies are Awesome: The Definitive Pie Art Book, Step-By-Step Designs for Every Occasion” (Rock Point) by Jessica Leigh Clark-Boijin. Chibi Pumpkin Pie Ingredients: Egg wash (or almond milk if making a vegan pie) Vanilla extract Brown, black, green and pink gel food color Opaque white icing color Orange and yellow sanding sugar Supplies: Pie pan of your choice

1. Roll out the dough of your choice onto parchment paper and cut out all the chibi pumpkin template pieces with a sharp knife. (Note: Make your own template or purchase the book for instructions on how to download and print out the template for this pie).

3. Paste the leaf to the stem with your egg wash, then cut out three thin strips of dough to make vines. Coat these in egg wash and coil them around the stem and leaf in whatever way floats your boat. I made a little curlicue with one of mine because it reminded me of baby doll hair! 4. Mix your gel colors with a tiny bit of vanilla extract. Using a food-safe brush, paint your pieces. If the filling of your pie is quite dark, consider painting the face bits yellow, or even just leaving them dough-colored. If the filling background is bright, like this sanding sugar design, then choose a dark color like black. Paint the stem green and the cheeks pink. To make the stem a little more “natural,” I gave it a quick wash with a more diluted green color to let some of the natural dough show through. Bake the pieces at 400 F for about 8 minutes (your oven may need a little more or less time). 5. Bake your base pie now and flatten down about 2 inches at the top of the trim to accommodate the stem. If you’re using a store-bought pie, break off a little bit of the trim so the stem can lie flat. 6. Once your base pie has cooled and you are ready to serve it, add your sanding sugar. I’ve made a bit of an ombre effect with yellow at the top fading to orange at the bottom, but you do you! A solid color will look cool, too. The final step is adding the face. To get the true chibi effect, place the eyes below the center line of the face. Your Next Home • October 2021

Refinishing Furniture

R

efinishing old or antique wood furniture is a popular hobby that has been growing over the past several years. It’s a creative hobby that can provide you with high-quality, unique pieces for your home or office.

WIPE-ON FINISH Sometimes a wood dresser, table or chair doesn’t need its existing finish stripped away. Instead, all it needs is a clear coat of wipe-on finish to revitalize it. TIME TO REFINISH YOUR FURNITURE There are several different signs that it’s time to refinish your wood furniture. Noticeable rings, water marks, a sticky surface, cracking, flaking, chipping, worn out patches or blemishes indicate it’s time to refinish the piece. When staining, painting or finishing your wood piece, be sure that you’re working in a fully lit space. Keep your workspace as clean as possible so dust particles do not get trapped on the wood’s surface. Never shake a container of stain or finish, instead gently stir the mixture to ensure all ingredients are properly dispersed and don’t settle on the bottom of the can. And, don’t always rely on samples when deciding how the stain will look, instead test the stain first on a discrete area of your furniture before applying all over.

Steps for Refinishing 3 STEP ONE – Clean the piece with a mixture of dish soap and warm water, especially if it’s been in storage or kept outside for an extended time. Scrub down the surface with a soaped up sponge. 3 STEP TWO – Assess the piece and determine necessary repairs. You will likely need a scraper, epoxy putty and wax filling compound. 3 STEP THREE – Remove the old finish by sanding with coarse sandpaper, a sanding block or power sander. Once most of the finish is off, further remove any shine with a medium grit sandpaper and finish with a fine grit sandpaper. As an alternative, choose a liquid or semi-paste product, spreading over the surface of the wood evenly using a bristle brush and follow instructions on the product. 3 STEP FOUR – After the piece is fully dry, apply a coat of sealant that protects the wood and creates a base for the stain to spread more evenly. Once the sealant dries, sand down the surfaces again with fine grit sandpaper. 3 STEP FIVE – Stain or paint the wood with a coloring of your choice. You might want to test this process on a similar piece of wood prior to applying to your furniture because once you start, you’re committed. 3 STEP SIX – Finally spray, wipe or brush on an oil finish, varnish or polyurethane coat, depending on your preference and if the piece will suffer a lot of wear and tear.

Tips to carve the perfect jack-o’-lantern J

ack-o’-lanterns are one of many indelible symbols of Halloween. It’s hard to pinpoint the precise origins of jack-o’-lanterns, but many historians trace the tradition to 19th century Ireland. In fact, this instantly recognizable staple of Halloween decor actually gets its name from an Irish folktale character named “Stingy Jack.”

Jack-o’-lanterns are ubiquitous in October, but a refresher course on carving one can help those who haven’t dusted off their carving skills since last fall. • Don’t carve too early. Though it can be tempting and fun to carve a jack-o’-lantern once the calendar turns to October, it’s unlikely the finished product will make it all the way to October 31. Horticulturists indicate that jack-o’-lanterns have a shelf life of roughly five to 10 days, though an especially cold October could shorten that life expectancy even further. If you want your jack-o’-lantern to greet trick-or-treaters on Halloween, wait to carve it until a few days before the big day. • Use a dry-erase marker to outline the design. It’s easy to make mistakes when carving a jack-o’-lantern, especially if this is your first time using a carving knife since last year. Use a dry-erase marker to trace the design onto the pumpkin before you make a cut. • Avoid severing the stem. When many people envision jack-o’-lanterns, the image in their minds is one in which

the top of the pumpkin is removed so candles or lights can be effortlessly placed inside. However, the custom pumpkin carving experts at New York-based Maniac Pumpkin Carvers note that removing the top cuts off the vine, which supplies the pumpkin with nutrients and moisture, even after it’s been cut. A whole in the back of the pumpkin can provide easy access when placing candles or lights inside, and cutting here won’t cut off the nutrient and moisture supply a pumpkin needs to avoid drying out. • Scoop everything out. The interior of a pumpkin will be loaded with seeds, which can be removed and later roasted to make a savory snack. In addition to removing the seeds, be sure to get all of the pulp out. Pulp left in the pumpkin will soon get moldy and that can shorten the lifespan of the jack-o’-lantern. In addition, when removing the interior, try scraping the front inner wall of the pumpkin thin, which may make it easier to carve. • Avoid candles when lighting the interior of the jack-o’-lantern. Candles might seem like the most authentic and even spooky way to light the interior of the pumpkin, but the heat produced by a burning candle can shorten the life expectancy of the jacko’-lantern. An LED light won’t give off much heat and will provide ample illumination. veryone loves to be pampered and your pet is no different! It can be easy to forget that our lovable, furry friends need a little extra attention sometimes. Here are some simple things you can do from time to time.

1. Homemade Treats A homemade treat is the perfect way to not only show your pet that you care about them, but also to monitor what type of food you're giving them. Your cat is sure to love homemade salmon or tuna snacks while your dog will adore peanut butter recipes. 2. Trying New Things Just like you, your pet can become bored with their daily routine. Taking your pet on your vacation is a great way to expose them to new experiences. Dogs especially love anything that involves exercise, so camping or hiking trips may be perfect for them! Cats can be trained to walk on a leash, but may enjoy vacations that involve less rigorous outside time. 3. Backyard Havens Your pet may have the perfect setup indoors, but both dogs and cats may appreciate a space outdoors that is tailored perfectly for them. It can be as a simple as a doghouse or an area enclosed by a pet fence, maybe above and beyond by creating a special playground. 8. One-on-One Time There are an endless amount of activities you can do with your pet, but the best part about all of them is the time you spend together.
