Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year!
We are honored you have chosen Midland Public Schools for your child’s education. MPS remains committed to providing exceptional learning experiences and programming for all students. MPS offers diverse academic programming, including the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program in our elementary schools and the Diploma Program in our high schools, the Advanced Learning Program grades 1-6, and preschool options for our youngest learners. We have outstanding options for Career & Technical Education, music, art, physical education, world language, athletics, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and so much more. There is something for everyone here at MPS, and we want each student to feel included and connected to their school community. We want the same for parents and families, so please look for information from your individual school regarding parent and family events.
I am excited and proud to serve as your interim superintendent. While I am new to this role, I am not new to MPS or the Midland Community. I have been at MPS for 15 years serving in a variety of roles, from Coordinator of Career & Technical Education to Secondary Curriculum Coordinator, and most recently as Associate Superintendent. I started my teaching career at Birch Run Schools and then transitioned to Saginaw Public Schools, where I worked at the Saginaw Career Center. I have dedicated my entire career to the education of students and to supporting teachers and staff. MPS is an amazing place to learn and grow, and I know this from a parent's perspective as well. My daughter, Ava, is an MPS graduate and is starting her second year at the university. Like thousands of MPS graduates, she was ready for success after high school because of the amazing educational, cocurricular, extracurricular, and athletic opportunities we provide here at MPS. My spouse, Craig, works at MyMichigan Health and is a military veteran. We are invested in the Midland community and are thankful for all it has to offer, including our amazing schools. Our schools are exceptional because we have dedicated teachers and staff who care about students and their success. We know that our terrific students and engaged parents and families are another reason that the MPS school community is exceptional. Staying connected as a school community is important, and I look forward to a year of connecting with you all.
MPS teachers, administrators, and staff are ready to welcome students on August 22 and launch into a school year of amazing learning and growth. Let’s set our intentions together for a year of collaboration, positivity, and student success. - Penny Miller-Nelson, Superintendent
