Summer is in the air and with this glorious season comes Michigan Works!
West Central s annual Hiring Parties in each of the six counties it ser ves. These large-scale community block party-style job fairs kick off May 31 in Big Rapids, marking the third summer the event has connected job seekers with a variety of local employers. More than 40 actively-hiring employers are expected to be at the Big Rapids event, which will be held at the Michigan Works! West Central ser vice center at 14330 Northland Drive
They have been ver y successful and well received by employers and job seekers, Communication and Marketing Manager Jonathan Eppley said of the events relaxed atmosphere that promotes effective dialogue “We’re ser ving up hot dogs and job opportunities. We re providing hot dogs, employers are bringing the snacks and together we re building the local workforce Come hungr y and leave with a job!
An invitation, first in 2022 and a return engagement the following year saw the company hire about 45 employees across all six Hiring Parties. Blarney Castle was so pleased by the talent it acquired at the Michigan Works! West Central events, it donated all of the hot dog buns for each of the summer 2023 job fairs.
Our Hiring Parties are a great way for those looking for work or looking to change careers to meet with local employers in a relaxed atmosphere and share a meal together, Eppley said “Michigan Works! West Central will be grilling hot dogs and participating employers are encouraged to provide sides and snacks to help attract job seekers to their booth. Some employers do on-the-spot inter views and others have you fill out an application. It s also a great way to network and learn about employers in our area.
New this year is a community resource component to the Hiring Parties taking place in Baldwin, Hart, Newaygo and Reed City
Blarney Castle Oil a third-generation familyowned business, participated in several events during the first two years of Hiring Parties and left with valuable solutions to its staffing issues. The company operates 170 locations throughout Michigan, employing approximately 1,700 employees. Yet, like a lot of Michigan’s businesses, Blarney Castle has struggled to maintain proper staffing levels, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All Hiring Parties are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at your local Michigan Works! West Central ser vice center (unless other wise noted).
