“Our JMG program helps prepare young adults for the real world said Jonathan Eppley, Communication and Marketing Manager with Michigan Works! West Central
Indeed it does, as the numbers attest. Some 89 individuals have enrolled in the local program since Michigan Works! West Central began offering it in 2022. Since 2008, JMG has equipped nearly 6,000 young adults across Michigan with the skills to overcome barriers and succeed in education, employment and as citizens of the world
The program s emphasis on real-world experiences was recently on full display during its annual JMG Legislative Day No ordinar y field trip, this initiative provided a group of eager young adults an opportunity to meet their local legislators in Lansing and get a first-hand look at state government in action at the Michigan Capitol Building
This was a once-in-alifetime opportunity for our JMG participants, Eppley said “For many of them, it was their first time visiting Lansing, much less having the opportunity to meet key legislators and discuss issues that matter to them. I think
it was an enlightening and empowering experience for them.”
If you re thinking about checking out JMG, “It’s a great program for young adults aged 16-24, Eppley said “Young adults looking to build their skill sets and increase their employability should come check out our JMG program.
That’s what Brian Flowers did The ambitious high school student took advantage of an opportunity to gain valuable work experience through Michigan Works! West Central s JMG program, leading him to become a respected and valuable
member of the Baldwin Lumber workforce team.
What began as a twoweek stint quickly evolved into Brian being offered a part-time job, thanks to his commitment to excellent customer ser vice inventor y management, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
“Brian’s stor y illustrates what can happen when you combine a strong work ethic, an eagerness to learn and a positive attitude ” Eppley said First impressions matter With the help of JMG, Brian was able to make a great impression that paid off in short order JMG participants
can expect to learn the importance of having a professional-looking resume when seeking employment and how to write one They also work on developing the soft skills employers look for, and how to engage with employers, so that when they apply for a job, they’re prepared, Eppley said
Participants chart their own course by setting goals when they first join the program, and work with case managers to develop skills that will help them meet these goals. Along
the way they also will take part in career exploration, which can include on-site job shadowing or using VR headsets to tr y out different in-demand career fields in a virtual setting Eppley said Those who enroll in the program have a lot of fun and learn some good skills along the way, ” he said ” That’s a win-win in anybody’s book ” For more information about the JMG program or to talk to a case manager, visit MWWC.org/JMG.
