Manufacturing Day addresses common misperceptions about manufacturing by giving manufacturers an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is — and what it isn’t. By working together during and after MFG DAY, manufacturers will begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry. MFG DAY is designed to amplify the voice of individual manufacturers and coordinate a collective chorus of manufacturers with common concerns and challenges. The rallying point for a growing mass movement, MFG DAY empowers manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive.

WHO’S BEHIND MANUFACTURING DAY? Created by Founding Partner Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, International in 2012, MFG DAY has enjoyed support from many organizations aligned with its mission of positively changing the public perception of modern manufacturing. Organizations that have played a vital role in working with FMA to successfully grow this national celebration of all things manufacturing include the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute (MI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). HANCHETT MANUFACTURING 20000 19 Mile Road, Big Rapids, MI 49307 hanchett.com Hanchett Manufacturing was founded in 1889 by John Hanchett after he invented a hand swage for band saws. This tool led to the manufacture of some of the finest saw filing machines and tools ever produced to enable thousands of saw filers to maintain mills throughout the world. Hanchett is producing several state-of-the-art machines to enable modern saw filers to need the more demanding challenges of current sawmill problems and opportunities. With the reduced supply of timber available, today’s mills must produce lumber under much more difficult conditions. Saw filers must be able to maintain much tighter tolerances when providing the band saw or circular saw to their sawmill. All parts machined and assembled in the Hanchett plant are under the watchful eye of a Quality Control inspector, Our production facilities include the machines necessary to provide high production and repeat-ability at an economical cost. THE SKILLS GAP Manufacturing can be a great career path. But how would potential job candidates know that? The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, an industry-leading audit, consulting, tax, and advisory service, produce the Public Perception Index that measures public opinion on a range of issues affecting manufacturing. First published

in 2009, the Public Perception Index has found that the U.S. public greatly supports the manufacturing industry and would choose to have a manufacturing plant open in their region over other types of employers. However, the public is unwilling to encourage their children pursue careers in manufacturing and believes the government has not enact-

ed policies supportive of the manufacturing sector. In 2005 and 2011, The Manufacturing Institute's Skills Gap Report confirmed that gap and showed an increasing mismatch of skills. This misalignment of skills is a major reason that The Manufacturing Institute created the NAM-Endorsed Manufacturing Skills Certification System.

Now, the 2015 Skills Gap Report reinforces the talent challenge that U.S. manufacturers face and warns of even greater skilled worker shortages in the near future. Highlights from the report tell us other surprising facts: 84 percent of executives agree there is a talent shortage in U.S. manufacturing 6 out of 10 open skilled pro-

duction positions are unfilled due to this talent shortage Over the next decade, nearly 3.4 million manufacturing jobs need to be filled, and the skills gap will likely result in 2 million of those jobs going unfulfilled The retirement of baby boomers, strength of the economy and attractiveness of the industry are ranked among leading factors impacting the talent shortage. With all this opportunity for employability, the report tells us parents are still unlikely to encourage their children to pursue careers in manufacturing. Only half of Americans believe these jobs to be interesting and rewarding, and only a third agree that these jobs are accessible and available. What can change those perceptions? Getting to know the industry. Industry familiarity increases positive perception, the report says. Those familiar with manufacturing are twice as likely to encourage a child to pursue manufacturing. Participating in an event like Manufacturing Day is a great way to get to know the manufacturing career opportunities in your area and find new ways to plan for your future.

BENEFITS OF WORKING IN

MANUFACTURING

There’s a million reasons to consider a career in manufacturing, but the National Association of Manufacturers (nam. org) outlines a few reasons that may be most appealing to today’s job seekers. Great demand Over the past 25 years, U.S.-manufactured goods exports have quadrupled. In 1990, for example, U.S. manufacturers exported $329.5 billion in goods. By 2000, that number had more than doubled to $708.0 billion. In 2014, it reached an all-time high, for the fifth consecutive year, of $1.403 trillion, despite slowing global growth. With that said, a number of economic headwinds have dampened export demand

since then, with U.S.-manufactured goods exports down 6.1 percent in 2015 to $1.317 trillion. (Source: U.S. Commerce Department) Over the next decade, nearly 3½ million manufacturing jobs will likely be needed, and 2 million are expected to go unfilled due to the skills gap. Moreover, according to a recent report, 80 percent of manufacturers report a moderate or serious shortage of qualified applicants for skilled and highly-skilled production positions. (Source: Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute) Great places to work The vast majority of manufacturing firms in the United States are quite small. In 2015,

there were 251,774 firms in the manufacturing sector, with all but 3,813 firms considered to be small (i.e., having fewer than 500 employees). In fact, three-quarters of these firms have fewer than 20 employees. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Statistics of U.S. Businesses) Great benefits Manufacturers have one of the highest percentages of workers who are eligible for health benefits provided by their employer. Indeed, 92 percent of manufacturing employees were eligible for health insurance benefits in 2015, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. This is significantly higher than the 79 percent average for all firms. Of those who are eligible, 84

percent actually participate in their employer’s plans, i.e., the take-up rate. There are only two other sectors – government (91 percent) and trade, communications and utilities (85 percent) that have higher take-up rates. (Source: Kaiser Family Foundation) Great impact For every $1 spent in manufacturing, another $1.89 is added to the economy. That is the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector. In addition, for every one worker in manufacturing, there are another four employees hired elsewhere. (Source: NAM calculations using IMPLAN) With that said, there is new research suggesting that manufacturing’s impacts on the

economy are even larger than that if we take into consideration the entire manufacturing value chain plus manufacturing for other industries’ supply chains. That approach estimates that manufacturing could account for one-third of GDP and employment. Along those lines, it also estimated the total multiplier effect for manufacturing to be $3.60 for every $1.00 of value-added output, with one manufacturing employee generating another 3.4 workers elsewhere. TRAINING FOR A FUTURE IN MANUFACTURING Career Connect allows adult students to go from class to career by following specific learning paths to job skills while obtaining their GED or high school diploma. Career Connect is a free program to those who qualify. In order to qualify, adult students must be enrolled in an adult education program AND in their final year of their high school completion or GED program. The program offers eligible students FREE hands-on technical training and employability skills. Students can select any of the programs listed below. Students can find out additional information by contacting any of the collaborating Adult Education providers. What classes are offered?

WELD 151 Overview of essential skills and knowledge required for entry level skills in the welding industry. This course includes safety, print reading, thermal cutting

and SMAW (stick). WELD 151 is a 83.5-hour, 10 week welding course. This course includes safety, print reading, thermal cutting and SMAW (stick).

WELD 211 Advanced Welding is a 71 hour course where the emphasis of instruction is a more in-depth instruction with gas metal arc welding, flux core welding, metal core arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.

AUTO 181 Electronic fundamentals and Electrical Systems provides a basic theory of electricity and electronics. There will be use of instruments for measuring current, voltage and resistance. The course will also cover operation and service of electrical systems and proper troubleshooting.

MANU 131 “Introduction to Manufacturing� provides 56 hours on the fundamentals in 8 disciplines of Manufacturing. Participants will gain knowledge through the use of hydraulics, pneumatics, robotics, electronics, injection molding, precision measurement, print reading, designing and an introduction to CNC programming.

Fundamentals & A+ In this course, you will acquire the essential skills and information you will need to install, configure, optimize, troubleshoot, repair, upgrade, and perform preventative maintenance on PCs, digital devices, and operating systems. Upon successful completion of this, you will be able to safely set up a basic workstation.
