Earning Readers Choice awards in several categories is important to the folks at Covenant Hospital Plainview. But the one for Best Emergency Room is a point of pride for the local facility because it means when area residents are experiencing some of their worst moments, they know they can trust Covenant.
And based on the data, those incidents happen often.
“We see all ages of patients with all kinds of complaints or concerns, and we’re averaging 1,100 patients a month through the ER, about 38 a day,” says Susan Wilhoite, nurse manager in the ER for almost two years. “We can stabilize and transfer any patient who is having a heart attack or stroke or another trauma. We have an ER physician here 24 hours a day and a mid-level provider here 10 hours a day.”
Designated a Level 4 trauma center by the state, Covenant Plainview has standards to meet to ensure they can care for trauma patients who may arrive at their ER first due to proximity. That can range from those injured in minor fender-benders or major car accidents, especially due to the heavy traffic on Interstate 27, to the major heart incidents and strokes. Patients come from all over Plainview as well as many of the smaller surrounding cities who have no hospital. And it matters not whether patients are insured or if they can pay for treatment.
Many of the most serious cases get transported to higher trauma centers, with Lubbock the higher priority due to distance but Amarillo also an option. And that in turn means that Covenant Plainview providers have to be even more prepared to stabilize patients for that journey.
“Our ER providers are all required to take a trauma course for medical providers and keep that renewed every four years. The ER nursing staff must take a trauma nurse core course (TNCC) and keep it updated as well,” noted Wilhoite. “All the ER caregivers at any level are required to have basic
life support skills, and nurses and providers must also have advanced life support skills as well as pediatric advanced life support.”
While keeping up those periodic certifications is imperative to be up on techniques, Wilhoite says Covenant Plainview takes it up a notch as well.
“We do some sort of trauma education every month within the department, and any outside conventions or education opportunities are passed along for caregivers to take if they want to boost their skills,” she said.
Since minutes count for stroke patients to reverse any damage, the hospital has a protocol in place to provide the very best outcomes possible under that pressure situation.
A team of key people in the hospital are activated to provide special assistance.
“Within the first 10 minutes of their arrival, we call a TeleStroke hotline and notify them, and they page a neurologist to call us within 2-3 minutes. Then when we get the CT scan, we can put a monitor in the room and the neurologist will evaluate the patient with the help of a nurse, asking all the same questions they would if they were there in person,” explained Wilhoite. “They then give the ER provider their recommendation on how to proceed with intervention based on their history and condition. The benefit of that is it helps start the recovery process quickly. Time is of the essence, so we need to do
everything to reverse that as soon as possible.”
Wilhoite said the alternative would be to transport by helicopter or ambulance and that delay could make a world of difference in a patient’s recovery.
The ER is equipped with eight beds, two larger trauma rooms and six regular private exam rooms. When patients arrive in the ER, they are triaged – a series of checks to determine the acuity of their condition – and that determines the order they are seen in the emergency room. If the ER is unusually busy, patients without severe injuries or trauma may have to remain in the waiting room longer.
Wilhoite says there are many factors at play with how long wait times may be at any given time, but there is one thing she knows for certain: that information can’t be given over the phone. Nor can ER caregivers give medical advice over the phone. So if you’re having an emergency of any kind, play it safe and visit the ER at Covenant.
Dr. Beau McCrory serves as medical director and trauma medical director at Covenant Plainview, and he has worked at the hospital for nearly 15 years. But Wilhoite is quick to point out that the success of the Covenant ER is truly a team effort.
“Everyone from administrators to caregivers do a great job. We wouldn’t be able to run this the way we need to without that support,” she said. “Everybody works well together. They genuinely care about the patients and work together to make sure they are cared for as timely as possible.”
That, and being able to be an important piece of a patient’s recovery is the biggest reward for Wilhoite and her coworkers in the Covenant ER.
“I think making a difference in somebody’s life is the most important thing we do, whether getting them acute care they need or community resources. If it makes a difference for them, that’s a job well done,” she said. “We do that with compassion and treating the patient who comes in as a person and not a condition or a disease process.”

The Plainview Furniture Exchange has only been in the city for a little more than two years, but it’s already making an impact on residents. The 2023 Readers Choice Awards proved this truth, with the store winning the Gold Award for Best Furniture Store.
For owner John Schmucker, the award is validation that the store is meeting a need.
“We are proud to have received that honor,” he said. “It shows that we are doing something good and people in the Plainview area appreciate our sales and service. We want to continue to do that and be voted the best each year.”
Schmucker, a native of Nazareth who lives in Canyon with wife and co-owner Kim, operates another furniture store in Hereford. He said he was visiting Plainview, where he was a frequent visitor while growing up, and noted that there was much new activity happening. He thought a store like his could be beneficial for Plainview and area residents.
The store opened in August 2021 off Kermit Street in what was formerly the JCPenney Outlet Store, a 26,000 square foot facility with plenty of space for the store’s wide selection. Schmucker said Plainview Furniture Exchange offers a variety of home furnishings for bedrooms, living and dining rooms, including sofas, loveseats, sectionals, mattresses, appliances and some electronics such as TVs and speaker systems. As the weather turns cold, they even offer electric fireplaces to heat your home.
“We wanted to be able to provide furniture at affordable prices, with the idea that we would have a lot of the items instore so they can be purchased without having to wait for an extended period of time,” noted Schmucker.
The store offers various sales throughout the years, and they work with four different financing companies to offer such assistance to those who need payout options
and qualify. They also offer delivery to homes around Plainview and the surrounding cities, preferably within a 30-mile radius.
All these things add up to the experience that residents have affirmed are meeting a need. And that’s what Schmucker believes sets them apart from competitors.
“We try to make sure we take care of our customers. We want to help them find what they need, and if they don’t see anything that catches their eye, we have access to a lot of other products we can order to help them find that item,” he said. “We want to make sure they are happy with their purchase, and if any problems arise, we do our very best to rectify those things.”
The Plainview Furniture Exchange has five employees, some who have worked at the store since its founding.
“We have a good staff and appreciate all they do to make the store run well,” Schmucker noted.
The store is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. They can be reached at the store 1001 N. Interstate 27 or by phone at (806) 429-7604.

When Steve Solberg found out his rented building was selling and he’d have to move, he thought that was the end of Carlito’s Mexican Restaurant. But a move to downtown Plainview
meant the longtime eatery could continue, and residents have affirmed that good decision once more with a slew of Readers Choice Awards.
Carlito’s picked up the Silver Award for Best Mexican Food for 2023, and Clovis, N.M., native Solberg believes that involves many factors.
“I think we have great service and everything is homemade,” he said, noting the restaurant offers traditional Mexican fare including enchiladas, fajitas, burritos, chile rellenos and more. “I cook every lunch here and every dinner. If your food isn’t right, it’s on me.”
Solberg, who also owns a sprinkler service business in Plainview, said the restaurant opened 35 years ago, with March 2024 marking year 36. Being in Plainview so long, he said he enjoys serving generations of customers. Shortly after moving into the downtown location six years ago, Solberg said his waitress summoned him to speak to a customer at the front, and he saw a women and a tall man holding a baby.
“She said, ‘When I started eating with you, I used to hold my baby. Now he’s holding his baby,’” he recalled with a smile. “So we’ve been here a while. We have great customers.”
Solberg said he’s not the least bit surprised at the Gold Award for Best Waitress earned by Jessica Lopez. The perpetually moving waitress he calls “dynamite” has been at Carlito’s for 30 years and is a perennial favorite for the award due to her great service. Lopez’ simple reaction to the award? “I love my people. It’s fun for me.”
As for Solberg’s Silver Award for Best Boss, he laughs humble and says the key is simple: “I understand people.” Hostess Lara Russell, who returned in July after a hiatus from the restaurant, says she agrees wholeheartedly with the award.
“Steve is a really good boss because he is personable. We are able to talk to him, and he is open about things. He’s a really cool guy,”
said Russell, one of nine employees at the restaurant. “It’s fun to talk to him, and he’s really good in the back getting the orders out. He’s a great boss.”
Carlito’s also picked up the Gold Award for Best Restaurant Service, the Gold Award for Best Enchilada, and the Silver Award for Best Hot Sauce. All are mainstays for the long-time business. Solberg said his cook has been with the restaurant 35 years and helps maintain the consistency.
While Carlito’s has seen some changes like every other business who weathered the COVID pandemic – including closing on weekends, a move Solberg says he doesn’t intend to reverse – longtime customers will agree that the tried-and-true dining experience has not changed. Solberg loves the size of the restaurant space and being one of the few hometown restaurants remaining in the city, attracting customers from as far as Lubbock.
“In my opinion, a lot of people would like to eat at a hometown place more than a chain,” he said. “But it’s hard to find those places anymore.”
As for Russell, she’s not surprised at all by the bevy of plaques racked up by her workplace in the Readers Choice voting.
“I think it’s because we are consistent. Jessica is very good with customers, is nice to everyone and takes it to a personal level. We are a smaller restaurant and it’s easier to get to know people. She recognizes people instantly and she knows their orders already,” she said. “It becomes like a family, and that’s what makes this a good restaurant. I appreciate how close everyone can be here.”

When it comes to food on the go, Plainview residents have many choices. And according to the recent Readers Choice voting, Sonic DriveIns has found a place in many hearts.
Sonic received the Silver Award for Best Restaurant for Fast Food this year, a nice surprise for local leaders who are both longtime members of the Sonic family.
“That’s a first in many years for us, and it’s very exciting that our community would vote us for that award with so many to choose from,” said Veronica Lopez, a managing partner at the 4004 Olton Road location of Sonic for 24 years. “I know we all strive for the same thing, and that is to have returning customers coming back for our great food and friendly service. It’s about overall experience and we all want customers to choose us over everyone else. We cook to order and make sure we send out fresh quality food that doesn’t sit there forever.”
The pleasant surprise is shared by Raymund Ramirez, supervising partner for 18 years at the location at 501 W. 5th Street and a 25-year employee of the Plainview Sonic stores. He attributes that award to the chain’s consistency in both food and service. And he and Lopez are in sync about the goals for both stores when it comes to winning.
“Our goal is to make sure our customers are satisfied. Our goal is to deliver great fast food with great quality. We want our employees to understand that as well and serve customers well,” said Lopez. “We just uphold the same standards and stick to the fundamentals and the basics to deliver.
Those basics are what gets us through everything and keeps us standing strong.”
For Ramirez, it goes deeper to a philosophical level.
“For us, it is really about people, whether customers, community or employees. We do it for the people only,” said Ramirez. “We’ve tried to be the best from day one. People spend their hard-earned money, and we want them to get our best. That comes from having great people in each location and amazing customers, some that we see multiple times a day. We try to be a family inside the store and with our customers.”
Sonic also won the Gold award for Best Carryout/ Drive-Thru, which comes as no surprise to the chain that is known for their unique drive-in format. For Lopez and Ramirez, this is key to helping them best serve customers with speed and friendliness.
“I think the carhop aspect is what makes Sonic unique from everyone else. We have people delivering the food out all the time,” said Lopez. “That really helped us during COVID to get people in and out quicker. We turn stalls quicker than we would with one drive-thru, so we always have customers in and out.”
That one-on-one contact and service is a hallmark of the chain, agreed Ramirez. But so is the Happy Hour, which earned Sonic a gold in this year’s Readers Choice Awards. Lopez noted the chain even has a tagline for the trademark beverage run: “Ultimate Drink Stop.” And with the popular app offering the Happy Hour halfprice drinks all day long, Lopez said customers are constantly pushing the red button for a soft drink or slush with an amazing assortment of combinations available.
While it may bring a smile to earn the Gold Award for Best Corn Dog, Sonic managers say they are not surprised the deep fried treat earns such accolades.
“We have won that often, and it is a very popular item here. It’s a great snack item they can get on the go, and for us to be the top corn dog overall means a lot,” said Lopez. Ramirez noted that at one point in the store’s history, the Fifth Street location was No. 1 in corn dog sales chain-wide during a special promotion. And he adds himself to the list of fans of the snack item.
Overall, Lopez and Ramirez said the awards are a great affirmation for their employees who serve customers every day. But the work itself brings great rewards.
“I just enjoy it here. Even if I didn’t enjoy the corporate level, I still love the people. I have a servant’s heart and love to serve the people, so I just love it all,” said Ramirez, noting that customers can expect an updated look to the stores in the new year.
“It’s not a dead-end job for me, and there are more opportunities. If you grow, you can get a partnership and more. You are part of a bigger team.”
While not born here, Ramirez said the community has become home as he’s served and moved up the Sonic ladder.
“I am so blessed to be in Plainview. We have great schools and teachers and a great community,” he said. “We weren’t sure how we would like a small town but we’ve really love it. Plainview is our home now.”

Racking up community awards is nothing new for an established business. But for one that has just celebrated its first birthday in Plainview, the achievement is notable. For Western Bank’s Frances Barrera, senior vice president and Plainview president, the recent lineup of Readers Choice Awards come as no surprise.
“I think it all goes back to who we are. The people are who make the business, and if you build a relationship with customers in whatever field you are in, they will be loyal to you if you take care of them,” said Barrera, a longtime Plainview resident. “I’ve been fortunate that people have followed me from different banks all these years.”
Barrera earned the Gold Award for Best Boss for 2023, as well as the Gold Award for Best Business Leader and Best Loan Officer. She credits those with surrounding herself with great people and being engaged in the community in many ways. Besides her work, she is involved with the Chamber of Commerce, is on the Board of Trustees at Wayland Baptist University and serves alongside her husband at Abundant Grace Church, among other roles.
But Barrera is not the only Western Bank employee to garner Readers Choice attention. Becky Villanueva, who has worked with Barrera for more than 25 years, is now a lending assistant and mortgage processor at Western Bank. She earned the Gold Award for Best Administrative Assistant.
Rebecca Sauceda won the Silver Award for Best Bank Teller and Silver for Best Customer Service, and Barrera said she does double-duty for Western Bank in both areas and has been in banking for around sixteen years. Her coworker, Norma Lazcano, grabbed the Gold Award for Best Customer Service, and Barrera said that honor was no surprise with her 25-plus years in banking. She serves as teller and customer service representative for the bank as well.
The bank itself garnered the Silver Award for Best Home Mortgage, and Barrera attributed that to those team relationships built over time. When interest rates dipped back in 2020-21, she stayed busy in this area.
“I try to work with customers like they are my own family. Mortgage can be hard to understand, so it’s important to keep that door open for any questions people have. It can be scary to buy a house, but I want to make it so easy for you that you come back to us,” Barrera said. “I’ve built a rapport with customers and they will come back to us again. Our bank is fairly new to have mortgage and we are establishing a new department for that in January because we are growing in that area.”
The bank is also growing in other ways. The newest addition is Jeff Rogers, senior vice president for agricultural and commercial lending who brings years of banking experience. And the growth is also happening in their physical presence. The bank recently broke ground on a new building to be located at 1010 Kermit (behind Burger King off the Interstate) and expects to be in the facility by October 2024.
And in mid-November, the bank will add a second location for customer service, new accounts, a drive-up teller and ATM at 3105 Olton Road, just yards away from their current office space at 409 Dallas St., directly behind Church’s Chicken.
Barrera is ecstatic about the growth and warm reception from her Plainview friends and neighbors. She started as a secretary in lending, then moved to lending officer, then mortgage officer, and has worked with several generations of customers. She admittedly was prepared to retire when her last employer experienced a corporate merger. She mentioned the plan to her children, and daughter Jovanna, who has worked for Western Bank in Lubbock for several years, who told the bank’s CEO and President Dan Odom.
“He said he wanted to start a branch in Plainview and wanted to talk to me. We met two weeks later and I fell in love with the atmosphere and culture of a hometown, familyowned bank. I thought I could do that,” Barrera recalls, noting the bank is really the most locally-owned in town with its Lubbock headquarters. “They were supportive and knew it would go great in Plainview. I prayed about that and had a real peace. About a week later, I asked others to join us, and it came together really easily.”
Barrera said when she was tasked with forming a team for Western Bank Plainview, she “wanted the best in the community” and every person she approached came without hesitation. That also includes Yolanda Moralez, assistant vice president and branch manager, and Angela Miller, vice president and electronic payments manager. The team trained in Lubbock, then opened their doors in Plainview on August 8, 2022. Nearly fifteen months later, they are seeing the fruits of their labor and building a loyal customer base.

When emergencies happen, Plainview residents want the peace of mind that the first responders here are prepared to help. And while they don’t do it for the accolades, it’s always good to hear positive feedback from the community you serve.
The 2023 Readers Choice Awards did just that for four specific first responders, all of whom are veterans in their fields.
The Gold Award for Best Paramedic was presented to Lieutenant Bryan Merrick, a Plainview native and PHS
graduate who has served the Plainview Fire Department for 29 years. He was humbled by the honor.
“It’s nice. I enjoy my job and working for the citizens of Plainview,” Merrick said. “I enjoy helping people, and we have a good department, so I’ve really enjoyed my career.”
Fire Chief Bobby Gipson said he was not surprised by Merrick’s honor as it is not his first. A few years ago he was named Paramedic of the Year by South Plains Emergency Medical Services, a regional award.
“He obviously performs well above average, and it’s good to see him acknowledged for his service in the field,” said Gipson of Merrick. “He’s a strong mentor and coach for this department.”
This year’s Readers Choice voting saw Gipson trade places with Firefighter Katalina Finley, with Gipson earning the Gold for 23 and Finley the Silver for Best Firefighter after a few years of the reverse.
“She likes to laugh about beating me in this category, so this year I got to beat her,” joked Gipson. “I was not surprised by her honor. Kat is the third female historically in our department, and she has already promoted to driver and equipment operator after nearly seven years here. She has left her mark and continues to improve. I expect in the future to have more females in the department, and she’ll be a great role model and mentor for those ladies as well.”
“It’s always great to receive public recognition for doing something I love and have a passion for,” Finley said of the award.
Gipson said while the individual awards are a great affirmation, he remains encouraged by the Fire Department’s service to the community.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our department as a whole for how they operate with professionalism. When they are recognized in this manner, it just drives home what we’re trying to accomplish,” said Gipson, who has served the department since July 1989, named chief in September 2021.
On the police side, Capt. Jaime Salinas received the Silver Award for Best Law Enforcement Officer for 2023. An employee of the Plainview Police Department for 27 years, plus one year as a reserve officer, Salinas is a Plainview native and 1988 graduate of Plainview High. He serves as captain of patrol, overseeing the 20 officers who work Plainview streets.
“It’s a big honor that it comes from the community I serve. I try to treat people like they want to be treated, like family,” said Salinas, who also served six years in the Texas Army National Guard. “I just enjoy serving and giving back to Plainview.”

In Valerie Landeros’ mind, the Red Door bar is a lot like the popular TV show Cheers, where “everybody knows your name.” And it’s that atmosphere that she believes was key to earning the establishment the Gold Award for Best Bar/ Night Club in the Readers Choice Awards for 2023.
Landeros has owned the bar with husband Robert since 2011, when they moved back to Plainview and realized one of his longtime dreams. Raised in Plainview and PHS graduates, they are active in their community and connected to many through various entities and the bar.
“I have enjoyed getting to see people in the community and catch up with everyone. We love the community aspect of a bar. Our customers are the first ones to be there if anyone needs something and is in a hard spot. It’s amazing to see the giving hearts of our customers,” said Valerie. “I’m excited to see these awards. I have a really good crew and am really proud of them. I couldn’t do it without them. We are a small town bar, and everyone has a favorite chair. It’s a place everyone feels safe and can come out and have a good time.”
The bar has weathered many storms, but few as difficult as the COVID pandemic and the years that ensued, where the bar was forced to close for 11 months. But Red Door survived, in large part because Valerie was able to keep staff on payroll. When they were able to reopen, they found a loving and faithful crowd ready to get back to normal.
“We were able to come back and generate the same atmosphere as we had before. They came back with loyalty, and we were so blessed,” Valerie noted. “We are proud of our community, and we have a mixed bag of the early happy hour crowd and our later crowd after dinner, so it’s a great mixture. It’s a real variety, and we cater to everybody in the community.”
Red Door also earned a Silver Award for Best Happy Hour, and Valerie said that was due to maintaining great specials and prices. She said the bartending staff likes to mix up specials for different days or even in conjunction with particular season, and that makes it fun for visitors.
Another Gold Award was given for Best Mixed Drink, and Valerie said the bar has a few favorites that could have triggered that distinctive.
“It’s probably our Chiltons, our Mexican candy shots –
which is one of our best sellers – and our Red Door signature drink, which is passion fruit vodka with spiced rum, orange juice, pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine,” she said, but noted that many of the bar’s offerings are loved by customers. “We take pride in using fresh ingredients and making the best drinks without many processed items so they are better.”
Two of Valerie’s employees shared the top honors for Best Bartender, with Morgan Smock taking the Gold Award and Stacy De La Garza earning the Silver Award. She wasn’t surprised by that in the least.
“Morgan really goes above and beyond for me and our customers. She is always trying to do more and help organize help for someone in the community, with the help of the customers,” said Valerie, noting that Morgan had been an employee for around six years, Stacy around two and a half. “Stacy is a cheerful, happy girl, and she’s been a delight. Everybody loves Stacy and her smile.”
Sandi Reyes, manager at the Red Door, agreed that both women are true assets to the bar.

“Both are very good bartenders. They are great people persons, and they can communicate well with customers,” said Reyes. “Red Door is more of a working person’s bar, and we often have travelers who are staying at the hotels and don’t have people to talk to. Morgan knows what she is doing, and Stacy knows her regulars and is open to learn more.”
Valerie said the Red Door, which is located at the Quality Inn in Plainview just off the Interstate 27 access road near Olton Road, is known for its karaoke on Thursdays, which are fun for customers and often feature themed nights to keep the crowd engaged.
Reyes said that just adds to the fun atmosphere that makes it both a great place for customers to kick back and for employees to work.
“I think (we won the awards) because we have a good environment here. We’re very close as coworkers and that gives off good vibes to our customers. A lot of people know Robert and Valerie, and they are very good bosses. They are very generous and giving and a lot of people like that,” said Sandi. “I have been here nearly five years and love the environment and bosses. I love my customers and have made friends with many I’ve known for a long time.”
The bar is open from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day.
