NATURE’S WAY HITTING THE MARK IN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

When Lacey Reeves Todd took over her mother Janet’s store in 2022, she had a few simple goals in mind: to continue the legacy Janet started 30 years earlier as a provider of natural health products, serving the community to the best of her ability.

That effort was honored recently with Nature’s Way earning the Gold Award for Best Alternative Medicine in the Herald’s Reader’s Choice awards for 2024.

“We are very proud of our hard work at bringing in around seven companies who are based in the U.S.,” noted Todd. “Their products are grown and manufactured here; we know exactly where the ingredients come from and know they are

the highest quality available. They are all thirdparty tested.”

While Nature’s Way has been home to a wide variety of brands and products aiming at helping local residents stay healthy and active, Todd said she has increased those lines and added a grocery section that includes snacks, chips, Celtic Salt, drinks, Crazy Water and more items. She also sells farm-fresh eggs, with a free dozen for $75 in purchases during a visit. They also have freezedried eggs that last 10 years after the package is opened. But perhaps Todd is most excited about a new development for the store.

“We are currently working on our very own private label line of vitamins and herbs!” noted Todd. “We chose to name this special line Janet’s Legacy in honor of my precious mom. We are hoping to have them available in store in about 6-8 weeks. These are also made and manufactured in the US!”

Besides consumable alternatives to combat allergies and other health issues, Todd carries a variety of other lines such as pet products to combat joint pain, bladder control and skin and coat issues. She also has a quality natural skin care line from Dallas and a new line of fly and mosquito repellant in spray, pellets and jars that is all natural. Natural cleaning and home products are also featured.

And for those more private issues, Todd also has some solutions in the store: “We carry two very popular products for erectile dysfunction and impotence, and we have bio-identical hormone creams for women.”

Todd, who has worked as a surgical tech for many years and was a previous business owner in Plainview, may not have expected to run an alternative health store, but she is enjoying the challenge of keeping her mom’s legacy alive while serving the community that she calls home.

Lexie Perez (long time employee), Brad Meyers (rep for over 30 years) and owner Lacey Todd

“She really instilled in me the idea of customer service and going above and beyond for people. If someone comes in, I do everything I can to find that item and order it for them, or find something like it or even better than that product. I’m thankful for that customer service modeling she gave me,” said Todd. “I’ve had so many people come in and tell me how she saved their life or a loved one’s life with products. I tease that there’s no way I could fill her shoes, but I’m learning. When it comes to people’s health, there is no question: I’m definitely a caregiver and love taking care of people.”

Nature’s Way is located at 2407 West Fifth Street and is open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. They can be reached at (806) 293-5066.

“...we know exactly where the ingredients come from and know they are the highest quality available.”

COVENANT HEALTH PROVIDING AWARD-WINNING SERVICE TO RESIDENTS

When it comes to healthcare in Plainview, Covenant Health has earned the trust of local residents as evidenced by the Gold Award for Best Hospital in the 2024 Reader’s Choice Awards. Employees must agree, as the hospital also received the Gold Award for Best Place to Work.

“We are deeply honored to be named the best hospital in the region. Our team is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to every patient who walks through our doors,” said Cassie Mogg, CEO of Covenant Hospital Plainview. “This recognition reflects the commitment of our healthcare professionals and staff who work

tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of our community.”

Mogg said the Best Place to Work award is meaningful because it reflects culture the company strives to foster.

“As a hospital in a rural community with a strong industrial base, we understand the importance of creating a supportive and rewarding environment for our employees. We are committed to providing opportunities for growth, teamwork, and a sense of purpose, and we’re honored that our team members feel valued,” she said.

The lineup of Reader’s Choice awards including a number of healthcare providers within the Covenant family as well. Dr. Kevin Jones received Gold for Best Cardiologist, while Dr. Sergio Lara

earned a Gold for Best Internal Medicine. Others honored were Best Obstetrician/ Gynecologist: Gold, Dr. Charles Smith; Silver, Dr. Elaine Brown; Best Children’s Health: Gold, Dr. Dominique Foster; Best Men’s Health: Gold, Dr. Monte Swanson; Best Women’s Health: Gold, Robin Stanfield; Silver, KrisAnn Shulz; Best Family Physician: Gold, Dr. Colby Rozean, Silver, Dr. Jon Watkins; Best Family Nurse Practitioner: Gold, Robin Stanfield; Silver, Julia Ontiveros.

Also honored were Best Surgeon: Gold, Dr. Dayton Wong; Silver, Dr. Doug Cummins; Best Physician’s Assistant: Gold, KrisAnn Shulz; Silver, Sara Rees; Best LVN: Gold, Veronica Magallan; and Best Pharmacist: Gold, Diana Villareal.

“Our physicians are truly the backbone of our hospital. They bring skill, dedication, and compassion to every patient interaction, and we’re thrilled to see them recognized as the best in the region,” said Mogg. “Their commitment to excellence elevates our entire organization, and we’re proud to work alongside such talented professionals.”

The Covenant Clinic on West 24th Street earned a Gold Award for best Walk-in Clinic, serving a number of local residents.

“Our clinics play a vital role in delivering accessible, quality healthcare to our community. Being named the best walk-in clinic is

a testament to our commitment to patientcentered care and to serving the unique needs of our rural community,” said Mogg. “This recognition motivates us to continue expanding services and improving access for all.”

Finally, Covenant Hospital garnered honors for Best Physical Therapy Center (Gold), Best Radiology (Gold) and Best Emergency Room (Gold). The Silver Award for Best ER went to West Texas Family Medicine, a Covenantowned facility.

All in all, Mogg said the slate of honors is encouraging for the Covenant family.

“As a healthcare provider in a rural area, we know the importance of being a trusted resource for our community, and these awards affirm our mission. Thank you to our patients, staff, and community for their support and trust. We’re excited to continue our journey of providing top-notch healthcare in a place we’re proud to call home,” Mogg added.

BOXDROP MATTRESS PROUD OF HONOR, HELPING PLAINVIEWANS

When Janie and Murlyn Keller first opened their BoxDrop Mattress store in Plainview in 2020, their goal was to simply help Plainview residents get affordable furniture for their homes, especially in a time of need.

That effort has been rewarded as they head into their fifth year of business with brand new silver medals for both Reader’s Choice Awards categories of Best Furniture Store and Best New Business for 2024.

“It means a lot to us because that means people recognize that we are here and are supportive of our efforts,” says Janie. “It gives us a chance to give back to the community and provide good customer service and good products for them. That’s a blessing.”

The Kellers have maintained the simple BoxDrop model of “by appointment” sales, where customers receive one-on-one attention and benefit from lower prices since the owners do not have to pay workers to work their store location at 1603 W.

Fifth Street. Customers also have the opportunity to try out the various mattress options and really get a feel for what might be the best fit for their budget.

To facilitate that process, the showroom has mattress and either box springs or bases setup for each of the 14 models they sell. Mattresses range from the economy model that runs as low as $100 for a twin to the bells-and-whistles model with cool comfort topper, memory foam and coils. It all depends on what you need and what your budget will allow.

“If you’ll start with what you have to spend, then we can work with something good for you within that range,” Janie said. “We buy directly from the manufacturer and the mattresses are brand new. That’s why we can offer the 50-75 percent discount off retail prices.”

Janie explained that their mattresses are all made by Corsicana, and many of the top brands all have the same materials but with different brand names. So the products offered at BoxDrop are comparable in quality to brands like Sealy, Serta and Simmons… just at greatly reduced prices.

“We’re just doing the best we can to provide for people. It’s a tough time for everybody, so we have been able to help people save money in this way,” she said. “It might not be what you want right now, but we can get you what you you need and you can save for what you want. That’s still our main goal: to help people get what they need at affordable prices.”

While the Kellers maintain an ample stock of mattresses for instant sales, they can also dropship to your location or can arrange delivery from Tulia to Abernathy for a small additional

fee. They also have a five-year warranty and the franchise can offer financing through Acima or Snap if needed.

“People need to know that we are not a scam, these are all new mattresses and use the same materials as all the major brands,” she said. “We’re here because we want to help people and we want to be an asset to the community.”

To make an appointment to see the BoxDrop mattress options, call or text 806-729-9466 or 806292-4439.

LOCAL SUPERMARKETS EARN COMMUNITY ACCOLADES

Plainview residents have long trusted the United family of supermarkets to meet their grocery needs, and the recent Readers Choice Awards bear out their loyalty and appreciation.

The United Supermarket on Olton Road earned the Gold award for Best Supermarket, and the Amigos Supermarket on West 24th Street earned the Silver award.

“It is really nice to get the gold for supermarket because it shows that the hard work we put in every day is seen by our customers,” said Rodney White, longtime store director at United and a 43-year employee of the company. “We build a lot of friendships in the community, so it’s nice that they can come in and we call them by name and they know our names as well.”

The awards lineup also included awards for Best Produce Department, with United winning Gold and Amigos winning Silver; Best Meat

Department, with Amigos winning Gold and United winning Silver; and Best Deli, with Amigos earning Gold and United winning Silver.

“In our meat market and produce, we have a great team for sure, with some long-term members that run those areas and want to keep them full, fresh and friendly every day,” said Jeff Ocanas, who has been store director at Amigos for three years but worked at the location many years earlier. “They are good at what they do and have been around a long time. Some of my earliest memories are seeing them back in the day.”

Ocanas credited the work of meat market manager Joe Barrera and produce manager David Perez for keeping the quality high, noting that “both opened this store 24 years ago. Joe is big in trying to find value for guests as he knows the high inflation times we are living in.”

White lauded produce manager Louis Vasquez for the great work in that area, and meat market manager Daniel Kilcrease, who has worked in the Plainview store more than 20 years. He noted both of those areas “put in a lot of hours and hard work to make the selections good for the community.”

Jason Smith serves as deli manager, with assistant manager Jonathan Perez and Maria Soto helping keep that busy area going strong. Ocanas said the Amigos deli stays busy regularly and he credits the staff in that area, noting they “take pride in what they do and do their best to serve guests and satisfy everybody.”

The Amigos bakery earned some additional honors, winning Gold for Best Cakes and Silver for Best Cookies. Ocanas lauded bakery manager Amy Medina with great work keeping that busy area stocked, and noted the store’s talented cake decorators are assets as well.

With both locations focused on customer service, both directors were proud of employees who received Best Grocery Cashier awards. The Gold award went to Adelita Southerland at Amigos and the Silver went to Andrea Bozeman of United.

“Adelita hasn’t been here very long, but she is a very good team member. She’s pretty great to make a good impact like that so quickly, and we’ll take that,” noted Ocanas. “She’s got great customer service, is confident and has a great work ethic.”

White said of Bozeman, “Andrea is a great team member. She has worked for us quite a while and it is a blessing to have her come from Tulia to work here.”

All in all, both directors were encouraged by the accolades from readers and customers.

“We appreciate the honor from the community in our core departments. We always try to do our best and we will take those honors. We are very grateful,” noted Ocanas, with a shout-out to long-time assistant store director Rudy Garcia as well. “We’re here to serve the community and have been a staple here for many years. There’s a lot of uncertainty everywhere but we aren’t going anywhere, and we are ready to serve everyone.”

LOCAL GEM

JUMBO JOE’S CELEBRATES AWARDWINNING FLAVORS AND COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Maria and Ali Drigan’s dedication to quality, value, and personalized service has made Jumbo Joe’s a beloved institution in Plainview, earning them multiple Readers’ Choice Awards and a place in the hearts of their customers.

Maria and Ali Drigan took over a restaurant in 2002, marking the beginning of Jumbo Joe’s. Maria wanted to bring the flavors of her childhood to the people of Plainview, so she and Ali set out to make it happen. Maria describes the running of Jumbo Joe’s as a “teamship,” with her managing the front and her husband, Ali, handling the grill and fryer. Jumbo Joe’s longevity, 22 years in business, speaks for

itself. Maria and Ali know what they’re doing, as evidenced by winning the Readers’ Choice Gold Award for their burger 12 years straight. This year, Jumbo Joe’s won the Gold Award for Burgers once again, along with Gold for Nachos, Gold for Fast Food Restaurant, and Silver for Chili.

Jumbo Joe’s is committed to quality, generous portions, and attentive service. Maria says that winning the awards this year was a significant achievement for her and Ali, feeling it was a validation from the community, thanks to the overwhelming support and votes for Jumbo Joe’s. The community of Plainview has given them so much, so they do all they can to give back. When asked what distinguishes Jumbo Joe’s from other fast food restaurants, Maria’s first answer was “quality.” Jumbo Joe’s never cuts corners, aiming to provide the best meal possible. Freshness is essential, and every meal at Jumbo Joe’s reflects that. They use fresh ingredients, with all orders made to order. Their ground beef is never frozen, and Maria ensures every order is prepared according to the customer’s specifications.

Maria says that Jumbo Joe’s would never serve anything they wouldn’t eat themselves. If there’s an error in an order, Maria quickly steps in to make it right.

Jumbo Joe’s also believes in providing great value. As prices rose across the industry, Maria and Ali decided not to increase their prices, striving to keep meals affordable for their customers. To avoid price hikes, they implemented a small tax on credit card payments to help manage costs. Maria understands that times are challenging for many, and she’s committed to keeping Jumbo Joe’s prices fair.

Excellent customer service is another hallmark of Jumbo Joe’s. With Maria running the front, she takes time to listen to customers, takes responsibility for the food, and brings a sense of

familiarity by remembering faces and orders. For example, if a regular’s burger is missing bacon, she might say, “I owe you a burger.”

With 22 years in business, Maria now knows many customers by name and order. Her visual memory allows her to recall faces and preferences, fostering strong connections with regulars. If a family member of a regular visits unsure of their relative’s order, Maria can often recall it based on past interactions. She can even spot regulars in a crowd, allowing her to enter their orders promptly, reducing wait times.

At Jumbo Joe’s, they aim for a wait time of only 10 to 15 minutes. Maria says they can handle anywhere from 20 to 50 orders in a busy half-hour, yet they always strive to stay on top of things. Regulars can often expect shorter wait times if Maria recognizes them.

As a local restaurant, Jumbo Joe’s has cultivated relationships that span generations. Maria recalls a customer who recently passed but frequently spoke of Jumbo Joe’s with fondness. She’s known some customers for 20 years, and they feel like family. Maria remembers the orders of customers who were children when they first visited and are now adults, some still ordering their childhood favorites. For Maria, these relationships are deeply meaningful.

Maria emphasizes that none of this would be possible without her husband, Ali. Originally from Iran, Ali came to America with little, working his way up from a job that paid around two dollars an hour. For the past 12 years, Ali has single-handedly run the grill, completing the other half of Jumbo Joe’s operation.

Jumbo Joe’s, led by Maria and Ali Drigan, is a restaurant known for quality, fair prices, and exceptional customer service. Maria has built countless relationships over nearly 23 years, watching generations pass through her restaurant, and she considers many customers like family. Maria and Ali operate their restaurant with integrity, honesty, and fairness. Their awards are a testament to this, with Jumbo Joe’s earning four Readers’ Choice Awards in 2024: Gold for Burgers, Gold for Nachos, Gold for Fast Food Restaurant, and Silver for Chili.

Jumbo Joe’s is located at 1911 W 5th St, Plainview, TX. They are open from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and closed on weekends. You can reach Jumbo Joe’s at (806) 291-9595.

CITY OF PLAINVIEW GARNERS SEVERAL READER’S CHOICE AWARDS

Plainview is home to some great residents, and they have affirmed their public service neighbors with a host of awards in the 2024 Reader’s Choice Awards from the Herald.

The highest point of pride was in the Silver Award for Best Place to Work, with employees lauding the city they serve.

“This culture of service and commitment is what makes the City of Plainview an outstanding workplace, and we are truly honored to be awarded the Silver category for Best Place to Work,” said

Melinda Brown, Community Engagement Manager. “We are proud of our employees and the vibrant community we work together to support every day.”

Mayor Charles Starnes added his pride in the accomplishment, saying, “We are honored to receive the ‘Silver’ Award in the Best Places to Work category. The City Council is dedicated to developing strategies that benefit all residents. We are deeply grateful for our employees’ daily dedication to making Plainview a safe community with an exceptional quality of life. We are shooting to get ‘Gold’ Award next year.”

Brown noted that the slate of awards honoring city employees specifically was particularly encouraging as well.

“The City of Plainview’s 185 dedicated employees pour their hearts into serving our community every day, delivering essential services like clean water, safe streets, public safety, emergency response, beautiful parks, enriching library programs, health services, and much more to our 20,000 residents,” she said.

Award). Best Paramedic honors were presented to Ben Sertuche, Gold, and Silver to Brian Merrick. Finally, awards for Best Law Enforcement Officers went to Zane Griego, Gold, and Jennifer Garcia, Silver. The honors highlight service in Brown’s eyes.

“We are proud of our employees and the vibrant community we work together to support every day.”

City Manager Jeffrey Snyder earned the Gold Award for Best Business Leader. Best City Council Member went to District 4 Representative Gary House, Gold Award, and District 2 Representative Steve Martinez, Silver Award.

In the first-responder area, honors went to Best Firefighter Katalina Finley (Gold Award) and Samantha Alwan (Silver

“Our employees aren’t just City staff—they’re your neighbors, friends, and family, standing beside you at church, working out at the gym, cheering on our teams at sports events, and volunteering with local 4-H, FFA, and school bands. Their commitment to Plainview is personal, fueled by a love for our city and a shared goal to make it the best place to live, work, and play,” she said. “From City Council’s strategic planning, which aligns with our mission— ‘To create a high quality of life for our citizens and visitors while fostering economic growth’—to our staff’s daily dedication to fulfilling that mission, there’s a shared sense of purpose across every department.”

In other categories, the Unger Memorial Library was recognized with the Silver Award for Best Bookstore, and the Second Saturday emphasis in downtown Plainview earned the Gold Award for Best Community Event. Kidsville won the Gold Award for Best City Park, with Hood Park earning Silver.

LONG-TIME ACCOUNTANT LAUDED FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

After 30-plus years as an accountant in Plainview, Lea Stukey has amassed a large number of clientele. And now, they have honored her in return by choosing her as the Gold Award winner for Best Accountant in the Herald’s Reader’s Choice Awards for 2024.

Stukey is a partner at the Lewis, Kaufman, Reid, Stukey, Gattis & Company accounting firm, where she has worked since graduating

from West Texas A&M University in December 1990.

“This was my first job out of college, and I have loved it here,” said Stukey. “I grew up in Plainview, and I have loved being here all this time. I love working with my hometown people and I love helping small businesses. I am in a unique position to help them succeed and focus on their business.”

Stukey said she was honored to be recognized by Herald readers and felt it reflected on her dedication to service.

“Customer service is the cornerstone of my practice, and I love my people,” she said. “Relationships are my thing, so I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve my clients and thrilled they are seeing that.”

A native of Plainview and a 1986 graduate of Plainview High, Stukey said her practice is primarily tax preparation and planning and consultation. She works with a diverse clientele but specializes in small businesses and farming operations. She said the most rewarding part of her work is building relationships and working with generations in their business dealings. She said knowing many

of her clients as friends and neighbors is also a reward.

“I think working in a small town and a small firm gives me the opportunity to work with a really diverse group and I love that,” said Stukey.

“Each client has their own unique problems and skill sets, and I think being in a small town gives me the opportunity to get to know them and see what we can offer to serve them best.”

Stukey credited her two assistants with helping her do the best job possible. Lorena Flores, fluent in Spanish and able to serve many customers,

“I love working with my hometown people and I love helping small businesses.”

has worked with Stukey for 16 years, while Amy Leatherman has been with Stukey for one year and “keeps us all organized.”

She said being an accountant is a high trust since finances are “a very personal thing to people. It’s flattering that they trust me with something so personal and I love that.”

Besides her work, Stukey serves on the board for Plains Land Bank Association and chair of its audit committee. She and husband Kenneth, who works in agriculture, are involved at Harvest Christian Fellowship. They have two grown daughters, Kendra Moulton of Houston and Stephanie Stukey of Lubbock.

Managing partner Randy Kaufman said the firm was proud of Stukey, who has been a partner since 2011.

“Lea is a hard worker and has great relationships with her clients, and they love working with her,” he said. “She does a great job with them and for them, helping with tax planning and whatever else they need.”

WEST TEXAS NATIONAL BANK EARNING COMMUNITY ACCOLADES

Front Row left to right: Abigail Saenz, Denise Smith, Macy Teeter, Monica Rodriguez
Back Row left to right: Brian Palomino, Nancy Stukey, Willis McCutcheon, Christi Byrd, Cash Horton, Monty Teeter

In just one year of its presence in Plainview, West Texas National Bank has made an impression on the community, earning a Gold Award for Best Bank in the Herald’s Reader’s Choice Awards for 2024. In addition, Plainview market president and senior vice president Willis McCutcheon earned a Silver Award for Best Business Leader.

“For the staff, we are really honored by this award,” said McCutcheon. “They have been working hard and are dedicated to the community, so it’s really a family affair. We’re glad to contribute to the community, and that’s what makes Plainview unique.”

The employees at West Texas National Bank, located at 3320 Olton Road, are longtime Plainviewans who are connected to the neighborhood in many ways and are highly involved in the community, even if it’s behind the scenes many times. Nancy Stukey, who worked alongside McCutcheon for many years, is vice president of commercial lending. Longtime resident Christi Byrd is branch manager. And former farmer Monty Teeter serves as Lockney market president and senior vice president for the branch in that nearby city, offering primarily ag lending.

“Everyone here has worked in this community, and there is not enough space to mention all the volunteer hours they put in quietly, and that’s just part of the fabric of Plainview,” McCutcheon explained. “It makes me proud because they just go and do things because it means a lot to them.”

“We’re glad to contribute to the community, and that’s what makes Plainview unique.”

McCutcheon has been in banking for around 42 years – 37 of those in Plainview – and said while every bank offers the same basic services, the difference really is in the people and the relationships built. And for him, that means being authentic to friends and neighbors in the city they love and serve. “West Texas National Bank is smart enough to let us be ourselves in our community. They let us do as needed to serve our community, and the Davis family has been really good to us here,” he said of the Midland-based bank founded 40 years ago.

McCutcheon added that the bank is proud to serve the agricultural community and area growers as they are still a vital part of the Plainview economy. He called them neighbors and friends and said the bank is glad to be part of that sector, offering ag lending alongside its regular slate of products.

SANTA FE TERRACE STRIKING GOLD AS SENIOR LIVING HOME

Santa Fe Terrace may have undergone a few name changes over its 30-year history in Plainview, but their long-time presence and focus on excellence as a senior living facility has been rewarded recently with the Gold Award in the Herald’s Reader’s Choice awards for 2024.

In addition, the facility earned Silver for Best Home Care Facility and longtime local nurse Sandra Cordova earned the Gold Award for best LVN/RN.

“It is very rewarding to receive this honor. Because one of my main purposes is to be a servant and help where I can, and I’ve worked hard to make sure our Santa Fe community is tied to our local community and letting people know we’re a more affordable option for people,” said Mirian Chavez, sales and leasing director for three years. “It’s a blessing to be where we are now and to be honored. It’s just one big family here, and it’s an honor to be acknowledged.”

Chavez said Santa Fe is a family-owned facility under the Twelve Oaks Senior Living umbrella, and the current ownership has worked hard to both grow the resident population and the exposure in the city that has been its home for 30 years. Nestled in a quiet community at 3404 SW 5th Street, Santa Fe Terrace

The facility has 36 apartments and a maximum capacity of 42 residents, with clientele ranging from fully independent seniors to those needing much more regular care. They offer laundry service, full food service in a dining hall and transportation to medical visits or arranged outings. Apartments include a small kitchenette, a private accessible bathroom and private heating and air conditioning unit, cable television with local channels. Santa Fe Terrace

also has a fully enclosed courtyard decorated to encourage outside time with safety in mind.

Santa Fe Terrace partners with home health and hospice agencies when necessary to arrange for inpatient or outpatient services, which can include physical or occupational therapy services. Cordova arranges these in conjunction with a resident’s insurance to make the process seamless and simple.

The entire facility remains locked for the protection of memory care residents, though family members always have access with unlimited visitation hours to enjoy time with family. They also have full access to Cordova and her medical expertise all hours of the day to make sure their family member’s care is well covered.

“We tailor to their individual care needs here. Everyone gets an assessment so we know exactly what they need at any time,” Chavez said. “Our head chef, Augustina Martinez, gets to know residents and their likes and dislikes or allergies, and they get to pick their meals. We encourage all residents to come to the dining room and enjoy the fellowship, though some choose to eat in their rooms and that is okay too.”

Chavez said the facility honors are due in large part to the commitment of the leadership team, which includes executive director Gordon Sims; nurse is Sandra Cordova; Martinez; activities director Wyatt Burns; business office coordinator Tricia Curry; maintenance tech Joe Gamez and Chavez.

“Our goal is to age in place with us and be their last home. Our activities director plans something daily, often with help from volunteers, to keep the residents having fun,” Chavez noted. “Recently, one of our goals has been to help seniors transform their tomorrow by having the essentials they need to have a healthy and fruitful life. We focus on nutrition and socializing for mental health and companionship. We have a lot of cognitive activities

too to help with mental agility and light exercise for them to work on fitness.”

Chavez said she sees her job as a resource to families and residents, even if that means helping them find another place that is a better fit.

“It’s a life-changing journey, one of the last big changes that people have, so it’s a real milestone,” she said. “I help inform them about what we offer and if we are not what they need, we try to guide them to our referral partner to assist them through this journey.”

A 30-year resident of Plainview who earned her nursing degree from South Plains College, Cordova said she has worked in various nursing capacities all these years, joining the Santa Fe House staff about 15 months ago. She has experienced the “full circle” of her career by coming to assisted living, seeing many of her very early patients now become her residents at the facility.

“It is always a humbling honor to receive because it’s not a job; it’s a calling. When you are able to serve your community and be honored, that’s an amazing recognition,” said Cordova. “Coming to Santa Fe, our goal was to increase the resident population and make sure it remains viable in our community, and we have brought in new families from all of our surrounding communities.

“The most important thing I do is make sure their physical, emotional, nutritional and spiritual needs are met and coordinate that they are getting a complete circle of care that allows them to thrive in a community of this nature. I also advocate on behalf of their needs as well, whether to insurance, physician, other agencies or whomever,” Cordova said, noting she meets with every resident daily to make sure needs are being met.

WILLIE’S TIRES: LOCAL ROOTS, COMMUNITY COMMITMENT, AND AWARD-WINNING SERVICE

Melissa and Mark Slack, lifelong residents of the area, uphold the values of community support and exceptional service at Willie’s Tires, where local dollars stay local and customers are treated like family. Locally owned businesses are critical to communities. They create jobs within the community, keep money circulating in the local economy, and provide goods and services directly to local residents.

Melissa Slack understands the importance of this for her business, Willie’s Tires.

Melissa and her husband, Mark Slack, were born and raised in the area—Melissa in Kress and Mark in Plainview. “Our customer base, we know them, and I think that means a lot to the people,” says Melissa, highlighting the community connection that helps drive their business.

The money Melissa and Mark generate through Willie’s Tires stays within the community. Their revenue flows back through donations to local sports teams and agricultural programs like FFA and 4-H. Willie’s Tires serves the community and then reinvests in it.

Melissa has worked at Willie’s Tires for 16 years. She spent a decade working under the original owner, Willie, until his passing, after which she bought the business.

Now, Melissa has owned Willie’s Tire for six years, running it alongside her husband, Mark, and their team. She proudly mentions that her daughter, Kyla, also helps with the store and enjoys learning about the family business.

Melissa cherishes the opportunity to give back to

the people of Plainview. “I love helping people, being there for everybody, but our agriculture is so important,” she says. “Especially during harvest time, when you can be there for everybody.”

Understanding agriculture’s significance in the community, Melissa ensures that Willie’s is always ready to lend a hand.

Although Willie’s Tires has regular hours, Melissa notes, “There are times when people have emergencies, and we do our very, very best to be there for them. If somebody needs us, we’re going to try to be there.”

This year, Willie’s Tires won a total of six Readers’ Choice Awards, with five of them being Gold. Willie’s received Gold for Tire Specialty

Shop, Locally Owned Business, Tire Service, Tires, and Farm Tire Service, and Silver for Detail Shop. “We were shocked this year at how many,” says Melissa. “They all mean a lot, but being recognized as a locally owned business means a whole lot, because the money stays here, the money is here. It’s for the community. If we do right by the community, we help the community.”

Melissa also gives a heartfelt shout-out to her crew, saying, “They are what makes us. Without them, we can’t serve the community.”

Willie’s Tire is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday. They are located at 1100 I-27, Plainview, TX. You can reach them at (806) 296-6603.
