He’s finishing better than previous years and has really earned the trust of his teammates with his decision making. Elizah rebounds very well for his size and plays great on and off the ball. He can knock down shots, cuts well without the ball, and has a high basketball IQ.

felt by the offense, even when he’s not the primary defender. Rylan (6-5) gives us some size. Exauce and Chris bring a ton of versatility. Zach was one of our best shooters at the end of last year. Season outlook: Offensively, we are moving better than ever without the ball and hope to turn our guys loose with an up-tempo system that will look to capitalize on opportunities. Defensively, our goal is to force turnovers, create mistakes and live in the chaos that we look to create. We need to play defense without fouling and limit our own turnovers. But if we can keep improving as guys step into larger roles, as an older team, hopefully we will have some success as we enter a new conference. BROWN COUNTY HORNETS Coach: Eric Jones (fifth year, 72-41 overall)

starters were mostly role players last year. They, along with Anderson, are going to have to step up and provide the scoring for a team that lost its top three scorers to graduation, and its fourth (Tyce Fullerton) to a week two football injury. My senior guards are going to have to handle the ball and exert a lot of energy on the defensive end. Season outlook: With the lack of scorers returning, this year’s team is going to have to do all the little things well (like rebounding and limiting the turnovers), to see some success. The one thing this team will have is the determination and work ethic to overcome other obstacles. I have no doubt that a couple of my seniors will welcome the challenge to step up and be the person we need to get some scoring.

Although we don’t expect to have as good a year as the last couple, I do expect us Last year’s record: 22-11 to battle and compete every (back-to-back 22-win seasons) game as if it was the state Key losses: Cole Behymer championship game. These two, with a host of others, will make us very competitive this coming season. We will have a lot of interchangeable players that will give us the depth to compete on most nights. Season outlook: After two 20-loss seasons, our youth has turned into seasoned upperclassmen. We have the depth to go 12 deep with a good freshman class that will push for some spots down the road. In the transfer portal we were able to pick up junior Jack Graner and his father, Coach Ryan Graner, to add to our depth. I look for us to be a very competitive team. every night on how to make our motion more efficient and effective. Our expectations are to compete to the best of our ability on every possession of the game. Other varsity players: Sophomore Nick Hamilton, junior Cameron Sievers, junior Caden Meyer, senior Brendan Clanton, junior Zac Howard, sophomore Carson Clevenger, freshman Gabe Howard.

Returning starters: Senior post KJ Beck (6.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg), guard Austin Strubbe (4.2 ppg, 2.4 rpg) Key newcomers: Evan Bell (senior guard), Caleb Carpenter (junior guard), Barrett Whited (junior guard), David Richards (junior guard), Braden Reid (junior guard), Jax Dion (junior post), Andrew Hobrock (sophomore post), Grant Fricke (sophomore guard) Notes: We lost a big part of our team, losing Snow, Neathery and Mueller, but we return a couple starters from last year in Austin Strubbe and KJ Beck. Beck is 6-6 and more mobile this year, and will be a big part of our offense. Strubbe provides great D and is a shooter.

Members of the Jacksonville boys’ basketball team practice during a recent session. (Dennis Mathes / Journal-Courier) I am very excited about all of our newcomers. Bell is back from an injury that sidelined him all season last year. Caleb Carpenter will provide ball handling and shooting ability, as well as Whited, Richards and Reid.

We have a lot of boys fighting for playing time, which will make for great competition at practice. Fricke is a great defender, and Hobrock and Dion will provide some size down low.

Season outlook: I think this team will be gritty and will lock in and play great defense. We hope to share the ball well, hopefully scoring in transition. The big question is leadership, and where will the bulk of our scoring

come from. Beck should be a big factor as he is probably the tallest post player in 1A in the area. I feel that we are pretty deep, and hopefully will play quite a few boys in the rotation. I expect a team full of competitors and hope

Notes: We have more experience returning on this year’s team compared to a season ago. We are going to try to score out of transition as much as possible. This team has to improve our half-court defense from last year. We have several players that have the ability to make perimeter shots and get to the basket off the dribble. We will use our speed and athleticism to our advantage. If we can play well defensively and rebound, then I feel like we can compete with any opponent we play against. I really love the passion and competitiveness from this team!

we could have three or four other girls be a leading scorer on a given night, depending on how teams want to defend us. We expect to compete for a conference title this season, we expect to compete for a regional title this season, and we hope to make it past a sectional semifinal this season. We have some tough non-conference opponents who are going to test us, and we also compete in one of the top 1A conferences in Illinois with the WIVC, so we will be battle-tested come postseason time.

We will go deeper with our rotation this year because our newcomers/returning letter winners bring valuable experience from the ’22-’23 season and the 2023 summer. We look for our newcomers to bring energy and enthusiasm to the team. We need them to be able to play defense, rebound, and score when they have the opportunity. Season outlook: We know that we have a huge hole to fill with the graduation of Kylie Kinser, who was a very good player for us. Notes: The returning starters were truly a JV team, as they were primarily freshmen competing against varsity opponents last year. The hardship and adversity they faced has brought about a team toughness and a new outlook this year. North Greene’s newcomers should contribute flexibility and bench depth, hustle and endurance. Season outlook: Our numbers are up this year, and we look for the team to defend better, frustrate and force turnovers, as we develop a better depth of offensive

In addition, Trystan White returns and brings a three-point threat that keeps the defense honest, but she also does all of the little things that don’t always show up on the stat sheet. One of her most important qualities is her leadership and her ability to make things fun no matter how difficult the situation. Some of the newcomers had valuable roles last year, but that workload grows this year as they all need to fill the void created by the graduating class. Each player brings a different set of skills that will benefit the team. McGee has the ability to score both outside and inside. Her quickness plays important roles on both ends. Likes is one of our best passers, and her selflessness often leads to great scoring opportunities for the other four on the floor. Littig is a developing scorer and is starting to become a legit threat inside and out. She also has the ability to guard the other team’s best guard. Grubb was our most improved player this summer, at times scoring 20-plus points in games. She is versatile and can score in-

side and out, rebounds, defends, and is always one of the hardest workers on the floor. Kaufmann is a natural with the ball in her hands. She has great court vision and is a terrific passer. She also showed the ability to guard players at the post that are considerably bigger than her. Little is going to be a wild card for this team. She brings high level offense and defense for a freshman. She also has the will to always stick her nose in on a tackle a la her older brother Chance Little, meaning that she is on the floor for any loose ball and usually in on rebounds and scrums. Season outlook: I look for this team to improve off of last year’s season. With the departure of some top seniors from the conference last year, I look for the Cougars to be a serious threat to win the conference. They should also have expectations in all three in-season tournaments. In addition, because of the usage of so many new and young players on the depth chart, I expect this team to take big steps as the season goes, and hopefully, they will be playing their best basketball as they approach the postseason.
