Midland Center for the Arts is well known in the Great Lakes Bay Region for its offerings in the world of art, science, history, theater and the humanities. Midland Center for the Arts features two performance venues, an art and hands-on science museum, studio school, a historical museum, museum shop, and the Saints & Sinners Lounge where patrons can relax with friends and refreshments before most performances. MCFTA encourages participation in as well as appreciation for art, music, science and history. Designed by the architect and philanthropist Alden B. Dow (1904-1983), MCFTA is a nonprofit, public foundation that represents six groups: Alden B. Attractions: Dow Gardens

Dow Gardens, 1809 Eastman Ave., is a 110-acre botanical garden in Midland set on the estate of Herbert H. Dow, the founder of The Dow Chemical Co. The gardens feature: • The historical home of Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow, which is available for tours. • A display garden that includes a rose garden with more than 400 varieties of roses, the largest rhododendron collection in the Midwest, seasonal displays such as 20,000 tulips in the spring, thousands of annuals in the summer and mature trees dating to the early 1900s. • A nationally recognized Children’s Garden. • The Conservatory, featuring a year-round display of tropical plants and a Butterfly Festival in March and April. • Accessible walking paths and/or 4

carts available for tours. • Casual walking opportunities or tours guided by staff members. • Specific wedding areas and packages. • On-site picnic areas and boxed lunches. • Outdoor Movie Nights and other activities, such as Lunchtime Yoga and the Lunchtime Concert series. • The Dow Gardens Gift Shop. • Seasonal Art in the Gardens displays. WHITING FOREST Whiting Forest complements Dow Gardens with a woodland experience that highlights the plant material of the Great Lakes Bay Region. The forest covers 40 acres and includes two miles of trails. Casual hiking, fun-filled forts, guided tours and a brand-new canopy walk are available in this preserve located less than a quarter of a mile away from Dow Gardens off Eastman Avenue. Admission to the forest is included with a Dow Gardens admission or can be purchased for $10 for adults and $2 for students.

Attractions: Dahlia Hill

Dahlias are in full bloom while people visit Dahlia Hill during the annual Autumn Equinox event, which included a tribute to Charles and Ester Breed, on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018 at the garden. Dahlia Hill is located at the corner of Main Street and Orchard Road in Midland. It was created in 1992 by Charles Breed and Bill Fisher with Breed providing 1,700 dahlias and Fisher contributing 200 yards of topsoil. Today some 3,000 dahlias are planted with over 300 different varieties labeled and arranged along the pathways. The Hill is maintained by The Dahlia Hill Society of Midland, a nonprofit organization created in 1998 to preserve and maintain the garden. At the top of Dahlia Hill is an art gallery featuring original designs in cast paper and bronze. All revenue from sales is used to support the maintenance and operating cost of the garden. An annual tuber sale, open to the public, takes place the last two Saturdays in May from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Hill. Flowers begin appearing in July and continue until the first frost. There is 6

no admission fee. Donations may be made to an endowment fund at the Midland Area

Attractions: Midland County Museums Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art Located in Midland Center for the Arts, 1801 W. St. Andrews Road, the museum occupies nearly 30,000 square feet of space and features rotating exhibition galleries and a permanent hands-on exhibition, The Hall of Ideas, combining elements of science, technology, history and art. More than 100 fish occupy its 450-gallon saltwater aquarium. The Studio School offers science and art classes and other related experiences as part of a year-round curriculum. Admission is required. Visit www.mcfta.org for current hours, admission and exhibit information. Midland County Historical Society Located at Heritage Park, 3417 W. Main St., Midland, the Midland Historical Society offers visitors a chance to travel through time and explore the history of Midland County. All facilities are within walking distance of one another and may be visited from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Friday of each month, plus during “Hands-On History” events offering family-friendly themed activities and presentations to help visitors discover, appreciate and preserve our local heritage. Open weekdays year round is the Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center housing the Dorothy Dow Arbury Midland County History Gallery, which offers hands-on interactive exhibits where you can “talk” to Midland’s founders, visit Main Street of a century ago and see vignettes of its history. The building also has a research library, available to the public Tuesday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. The Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum uses multi-media exhibits to provide a look at the birth of Midland’s largest business and the evolution

A new outer space-themed exhibit is now open at the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science & Art. of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The 1874 Bradley Home Museum is a hands-on historic house museum showing the everyday life of an early Midland family. The Carriage House features a collection of horsedrawn carriages and sleighs, and is home to a functional blacksmith’s shop. Admission to historic sites is free. Visit www.mcfta.org for current hours and events. Sanford Centennial Museum The museum is located at the corner of Smith and Saginaw in Sanford. It is open Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Hours are Saturdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m. There is no admission or parking charge. turn-of-the-century buildings including the main museum housed at Riverside School, the Smith family log cabin, Clare Z. Bailey chapel, Sanford town hall, Olson general store, Felix school, a Veterans Memorial, a bunk house, two vintage cabooses, a railroad switch engine and box car, covered bridge and a Big Wheel Log Hauler. Special events include: Log Cabin Day in June, Train Day in August, and Founders Day weekend (always the weekend after Labor Day) in September. Founders Day includes a pancake breakfast, the annual parade downtown, free live country music, a petting zoo, face painting, barrel train and free carousel rides, children’s treasure hunt, wood branding, old fashioned machine demonstrations, blacksmithing and more. Private tours are available with prior arrangements.

Attractions: Dow Event Center The Dow Event Center, located at 303 Johnson St., Saginaw, offers area residents hundreds of entertainment, sports, cultural and educational opportunities annually. Performers at the center have included Elvis Presley, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Brad Paisley, Car-

rie Underwood, Kid Rock, The Harlem Globe Trotters, Sesame Street Live, Disney on Ice, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Les Miserables, The Nutcracker Ballet, Rent and Riverdance. The Saginaw Spirit play more than 30 hockey games each year in Wendler

Attractions: Chippewa Nature Center

Chippewa Nature Center offers indoor and outdoor programs, including nature walks, paddling and hiking trips, workshops, guest speakers, school and Scout programs, Nature Day Camp and Nature Preschool. The Visitor Center, located at 400 S. Badour Road in Midland, offers free admission and houses the Wildlife Viewing Area, River Overlook (off-site visitors can take in the view from the web cam), a hands-on kid-friendly Ecosystem Gallery and Nature Discovery Area, the Bur Oak Theatre featuring short interpretive films and free wi-fi. CNC’s Nature Preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds meets developmental needs and builds an appreciation for

the natural world with two-, three- and four-day half day classes. Scheduling options and registration packets can be found online at www.chippewanaturecenter.org CNC has more than 15 miles of trails open year-round. The 3.7-mile paved Chippewa Trail for non-motorized traffic joins the CNC with downtown Midland at the Tridge. The Nature Center allows hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing (over seven miles groomed seasonally) on its foot trails, and the paved, half-mile Arbury Trail is wheelchair accessible. Pets and bicycles are not allowed on CNC’s foot trails. The Homestead Area is made up of

three restored log buildings. The Sugarhouse is open free of charge every weekend in March from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Visitors can watch as sap is boiled down to make maple syrup. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Homestead Farm and Log Schoolhouse are open every Sunday, 1-5 p.m., with free admission. Annual events include Maple Syrup Day, Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, Native Plant Sale, Fall Harvest Festival and BioBlitz (alternating years) and the Nature Art Show & Sale. Health Care: Grief Support Groups The Midland area grief and loss support groups are free services provided by the Midland Catholic parishes, Memorial Presbyterian Church, MidMichigan Hospice and Heartland Hospice Services. The three Catholic parishes host an adult group recovery process that is Christian in focus and open to all. Meetings take place throughout the year at one of the parishes.
