AutumnFest will take over Elkton Live music, car show, parade and more to be featured

events and activities to participate in. Some of these include: • Bingo on Thursday, Aug. 29. • A flea market. • Free inflatables for children. • Friday night will be the festival queen crowning and the beautiful baby contest. • The beer tent, which will open Friday night and will feature live music and some comedians. • A mud volleyball tournament on Saturday, Aug. 31. • The festival’s parade will happen Saturday, Aug. 31. • On Saturday, Aug. 31, the bands Peacemaker, War Machine and Rockstar will be playing under beer tent on Saturday. But, perhaps two of the biggest events of the festival will happen on Sunday, Sept. 1: The car show and tractor pull. Damrow said this car show is the largest one in the Thumb area, with him estimating around 150 cars entering — if the weather is good. The tractor pull on Sunday, Sept. 1 is the largest Thumb Tractor Pulling Association pull in the state. Damrow said he’s expecting a huge turnout for the pull.

BY ANDREW MULLIN Tribune Staff Writer ELKTON – The popular Elkton AutumnFest, featuring a huge car and tractor pull, will return to the village on later this month. The festival will take place throughout four days this year, going from Thursday to Sunday. The event will mainly take place in Ackerman Memorial Park and downtown Elkton. Kurt Damrow, president of Elkton Community Club, said Elkton has had a festival on Labor Day Weekend for decades, but has been know as the AutumnFest for about 20 years. He said the festival is very important to the residents of Elkton and acts as a family reunion of sorts. “You drive around town, and you see garage sales, tents and campers, and people staying overnight,” he said. “(The festival) is a big family reunion in the area.” The festival will have plenty of adult- and kid-friendly

DIAMOND BLUE DAY SPA & SALON

Tickets for the beer tent and entertainment will be $10 on Saturday, Aug. 31 and to spectate the tractor pull — kids 7 years old and younger get into the pull for free. Overall, Damrow said he expects around 3,000 people to attend throughout the weekend.

Mama Ruth festival returns Labor Day Weekend Chicken and ham dinner, music, and plenty of attractions BY ROBERT CREENAN Tribune Staff Writer RUTH – For those in the mood for some old-fashioned fun to close out their summer, look no further than the Mama Ruth Dinner. The event will take place all day on Sept. 1 at the Holy Apostles Parish in Ruth. The main draw for Mama Ruth is the all-you-can-eat dinner, served family style with chicken, ham, corn, beans, and mashed potatoes. Dinners cost $14 for adults, $7 for children, and kids under 5 can eat for free. Other attractions include cornhole tournaments, a car show, a sweet shop, bingo, a free petting zoo, a history

nook, and a country store. Two bands will be performing. The Natural Tones, a polka band, will play from 1 to 6 p.m., and Even Steven, a variety band, will play from 7 p.m. to midnight. After morning mass at the church, a senior citizen of the parish will be crowned Mama Ruth for the festival. Mama Ruth co-chairperson Debbie Bischer said most people believe the festival has been going on for over 100 years, but no one knows for sure. “Its our big fundraiser for the church for the year,” said Bischer. “It’s also a celebration before the kids go back to school.” Bischer also said Mama Ruth is a chance for people who attended and taught at the church’s former school to return. For more information, call the church’s office at 989-864-3649.

Fall Family Days return to Thumb Octagon Barn Agriculture education takes center stage BY ERIC RUTTER Tribune Staff Writer GAGETOWN — Contributing to the agricultural industry can be a laborious process, but the Thumb Octagon Barn is doing its part. This year, the 24th annual Fall Family Days returns to Gagetown as the staff at the Thumb Octagon Barn Agricultural Museum, dredges up a mixture of historical displays and information for visitors. Running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7-8, the agricultural museum, located at 6948 Richie Road, is hosting a weekend full of farming demonstrations and displays, all of which are designed to promote the area’s rich history of agriculture. At the Fall Family Days, visitors are encouraged to bring children of all ages, and admission is $5 for those ages six and older. For the younger visitors, crafts will be available on-site as well to help build on the educational opportunities centering around early-1900s farming techniques. As part of the event’s 2019 theme of “Food Industry: Past and Present,” the barn is holding a Farmer’s Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. each day. In addition to the early morning food options, Fall Family Days will feature homemade ice cream, soft pretzels, hog kettle popcorn, hot donuts and cider, bean soup, homemade fries and much more. This farm-filled event designed especially for agricultural historians will also feature antique vendors and a large flea market for those looking to take a piece of Thumb Octagon Barn home with them.

Of the 18 museums in the county, most will be open for tours and have some sort of activity or activities available for visitors. Ellicott said the weekend presents a great opportunity to show the younger generation how things were before them. She added that the museums are also open at many other times throughout the year, since tackling them all on a single weekend would be nearly impossible to do. “That’s why we’ve been doing this for several years — so that you could pick a couple and go each weekend,” Ellicott said. “Then go to something different the next year.” Museums scheduled to participate in the weekend event include: • Charles W. Michigan artwork to be featured at festival Art in the Park returned to Port Austin for 18th year BY ROBERT CREENAN Tribune Staff Writer PORT AUSTIN – The Thumb Arts Guild will be putting on its 18th annual Art in the Park event over Labor Day Weekend. The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 at Gallup Park in Port Austin. More than 50 artists from throughout Michigan and a

few from out of state will be present to display and sell their works. “It is a great opportunity to meet artists, to see them work, and purchase beautiful pieces,” Art at the Park chairperson Debra Maxwell said. “Each artist brings a unique perspective of their medium to the fair. The art on display ranges from watercolors, pottery,

photography, jewelry, glass, turned wood, and iron works. As a juried art fair, prizes will be awarded to winning artists in various categories. Guests can enjoy food and music to go along with the artwork. More information about the Thumb Arts Guild or Art in the Park can be found at www.thumbartsguild.org. More photos, Pages 26, 28
