I have been all over the place lately, literally and figuratively! Yes, I think that it is an accurate description of how July panned out for me. Looking back, it was a massive month of changes going out in SL and in RL. First and foremost, I would like to welcome the newest members of our team. I am really delighted to have you join our little family. Watching us grow like that really warms my heart. On the other hand, the biggest change of all was completed over the region. We are near completing the region’s full remodel. Our designer, the fantastic Danny Bourne
(of reBourne) took on the challenge to give us a new HQ but also an amazingly beautiful sim for all to come and party the night away or just plain simply hang out. To say that I am head over heels in love with it is an understatement. When it is completed, it should be a photographer’s dream. Upon completion, we will plan a massive Grand Opening party with lots of surprises, so I encourage you to join our group to keep updated! As for now, there is a new issue here and it is fabulous... enjoy! xoxo Angel

Wearing clothing Made in SL by Bert Calamari
Log in
Second Life has a sophisticated clothing system, one that allows an almost infinite variety of styles and outfits.
If you want to go beyond pre-packaged outfits and want to create your own combinations it is useful to know how the system works. The first thing to be aware of is that there are two ways to create clothing in Second Life: clothing items or prims. These behave differently both in how they look and how you wear them. The Clothes The first thing you will notice when wearing clothing is that the individual items have different types, represented by different icons in your inventory. The item type determines where it appears on your body and the order that clothes should be put on your avatar. Upper body items include: Undershirts, shirts, gloves and jackets.
11
12
Lower body items include: underpants, socks, pants, dresses (these are actually skirts) and shoes. You can only wear one item of each type at any one time. Viewer 2 introduces two new types that cover the whole body and, confusingly, are not actually clothing. These are tattoos and alpha masks. Before Viewer 2, most tattoos were provided as “undershirts” or “shirts”, so certain outfits would make your tattoos disappear! Now that tattoos have their own type you won’t have to worry about choosing between your new swimwear and your tat... There are two ways to check exactly what you are wearing. In Viewer 2, simply select the “My Appearance” tab on the right panel (the
lowest tab, with an image of a shirt on it) and then click on “Wearing”. This will show you all the clothing and prim items you are currently wearing. An alternative way is to edit your appearance. You will see a section for each clothing type, and multiple options will appear for each one. These options can be used to create a new item of clothing, or edit the shape and colour. Always make sure you have another copy of the item you are editing. Just in case. Prim Clothing Sometimes Second Life’s options for clothing are not capable of producing the effect the designer wanted. For these items, prims are used instead of regular clothing. You can
Log in
easily tell which items are made using prims by the icon next to the item. This will be a yellow or orange box. You are most likely to find prims used for shoes, skirts, hats and other accessories such as watches and belts. Unlike other clothing, prim items are not put onto your avatar in layers – instead they are “attached” to specific points on your avatar. The “Wearing” option will tell you which point each item is attached to. Prim items are edited in the same way as other objects in Second Life (right-click the object and select “Edit”). With clothing, this is much easier if you stand on a pose stand. If the designer has al-
lowed it, this will allow you change the size and position of the item for a better fit. Further Information If you are looking to go further with creating or editing clothing, there are links to more detailed tutorials on the Second Life Wiki at wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Clothing_ Tutorials.
R If you have any questions not covered here, drop them on a notecard to Bert Calamari or send them by email to bert@heartbeatmag.co.cc. All questions will be answered and may appear in the magazine. Questions may be edited for clarity.

Cover This writer senses a disturbance in the force‌ (Paul Nowles is typing‌) Paul Nowles: well hello :) Creamy Mynx: Hello to you Paul Creamy Mynx: That was Outstanding. I really enjoyed your show (a live show in SL at the Cove Beach that started at 4 pm SLT). To paint the picture for the reader: The SL landscape was gorgeous at the Cove. Paul was up on
a stage when I rezzed in with his devote followers already on the dance area near the stage. The Cove is a beautiful beach and water scene. Many of the patrons were dancing as single or couples and giving out auto gestures and words of praise in the Local chat.
Paul was vibrant and charming and came off the stage to actually dance around to everyone there. In voice, Paul greeted all by name and got many animated responses to his greetings. Paul Nowles laughs often and his laugh like his voice is full, rich and warming
to the heart and soul. Paul seems to embrace his audience and they return the love to him. I went to four (4) events that featured Paul Nowles, all with different backgrounds yet I found Paul to be engaging, charming and captivating for each of the events.
25
26
Here are the sweet tidbits of the interview that I had with Paul: Why do you Sing in SL? Oh nice question :) I sing for the pure joy of singing… no joke… it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on… there is nothing more gratifying then looking out and seeing your friends enjoying what they are hearing and making them smile with nothing more than your voice. What are your favorite genres of Music? Eras of Music? Well for singing I love singing classic rock… it is the era I grew up in… Seger, Journey, ELO, Clapton, SRV, REO, Bon Jovi, Gabriel, etc… these were the performers I grew up admiring and emulating… I also have a liking for music from the 40’s, 50’s… Etta James, Billy Holiday, Patsy Kline… but I only really started appreciating it recently And of course I love Blues… old and new… nothing better. Name of 3 of your favorite SL places to perform? Well no one can argue that the SL
Blues Warehouse is my favorite… my wife owns it..lol… we have a lumpy couch… I don’t like sleeping on it... :P) Kickin is another favorite and the Saranac House belongs to my great friend VanMorrison Mint What is your most memorable experience as a performer? I think when I looked up and saw more than the venue owner at one of my shows... lol, You are making my job so easy. When not performing what do you enjoy doing for fun in SL? I build and tinker. I am a programmer in RL so I like to code scripts and work on different things. I am currently working on an idea to give to everyone in SL audiences to help them track their favorite performers. The current viewer has made finding live music entertainment kinda difficult. And of course Chey and I love/ enjoy going out and hearing other performers.
Cover Last question... Awww… this is fun... :( giggles – I don’t want Chey mad at me for your dinner getting cold lol, did she IM you…? lol lmaoo – Not yet… but my woman’s radar is on lol Do you have any advice for SL
rising Singers/Performers? Sure. Remember that this is for fun, enjoyment of performing and that your best allies and friends are the venue owners, your fellow performers and the audience members. And that the audience are friends first. We are all here for the enjoyment of music. Anything else will not make you a happy puppy.
From an informal talk with Cheyanne Sinatra, Paul’s SL partner and SL wife: I met him in my club and couldn’t change the stream. I didn’t hear him till like a month later and I happened to teleport someplace heard a singer, I walked all over the sim till I saw who was singing. Funny part is I didn’t think he remembered me. lol Is there anything that you’d like me to write about him or you both as a couple for Heartbeat Magazine’s readers? Wow we’re together real life now and every day is better than the next. I love him so much and it’s
that forever stuff :)) He has a million dollar personality and we have a lot of fun together. He is even building me a walk in closet and I’m tickled as I always wanted one. Do you have pets? Do you share something special in common? I have a parrot; who is with my mom right now. We’re contemplating a puppy. And we share a birthday; Paul & I were born on the same day on August 5th. Paul is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Paul Nowles is usually available weeknights 4 pm SLT - 8 pm SLT and flexible on the weekends (10 am SLT - 12 am SLT). See his profile for a general schedule or join his group as I did to get notices of when and where he will be performing in SL. Paul Nowles can also be found at YouTube. Two of his SL performances and his wedding to his gorgeous SL wife Cheyanne Sinatra are there. Cheyanne is the owner of the SL club called Cheynatra Furniture & the Blues Warehouse. When you teleport there you will be greeted by a huge black limo parked in front, paparazzi and the red carpet to the entrance. When you go inside you will find a tasteful décor and don’t forget before you leave to tip the SL bot bartender named James Smith. In writing this special piece, I just wanted to respectfully expose the talent, skill, allure and style that is the artist called Paul Nowles.
I believe that I succeeded in doing so because he is a wonderful performer filled with laughter, love and vocal talent.
Thank you both – Paul Nowles and Cheyanne Sinatra – for enriching my SL life. It truly was this writer’s pleasure to meet you both and I look forward to attending more future events.

An interview with the director and choreographer of Ballet Pixelle Inarra Saarinen
Events
Ms Inarra, tell me about your life, when did you first start to dance, and when did you know that this was your passion? I began dancing when I was 4 and continue to train and take classes to this day. I started training professionally at about 10, began choreography at 12, and performed and choreographed for many years in many different styles. Dance has always been my passion – but it has always been choreography even though I performed for a long time as well. When did you decide you wanted to be a director/choreographer of a ballet company in Second Life? I had done a lot of choreography and directing in First Life, but then moved to a remote location where there were no professional dancers. When I found Second Life, one of my first thoughts was “maybe I can do a little choreography here with avatars”. Then I realized we could do perfect split grand jetés that hovered forever, and a dancer could grow old while turning endlessly!
That was my aha moment. I made a little hillside theatre, and spent time dancing myself. Then I had an idea for a ballet and needed more dancers… well, and here we are! When was your first debut and what was the ballet? The Company started in 2006 and we debuted with our original ballet Olmannen. Original music was composed for the ballet by Alazarin Mondrian. I wrote the story, created the animations, and did the choreography. Olmannen is the story of a couple in love, how the man, Namon protects the girl, Seraphette, from the demon devangs and has to become one himself. Seraphette grows old and dies. She is reincarnated as a gypsy dancer, and Namon finds her and they recognize each other. In the end, they perform a beautiful pas de deux of love. Tell me about the ballets your company has performed. In four years, we have created and performed about 10 completely original ballets and repeated The

Nut, our essence of the Nutcracker with just the dancing, for 3 years. We have performed Phylogeny as a different view of the evolution of man and who was first and phylogeny – the development of the species. Phylogeny was performed live on a large screen in Indianapolis with the Telematics Ensemble playing the original score by Douglas Anderson underneath; Windows, three stories and ages of love we see through various windows; Je t’aime, several French dance and magic vignettes; Shuzenji, a tale of love, jealously, murder, suicide, and ghostly marriage set in Edo-period Japan; Living Goddess, the story of a real living goddess child in Nepal called Kumari and the gods and goddesses that surround her; Degas Dances, a classical ballet where Degas’s paintings come to life and one of our ballerinas dances with the moving image of another virtual ballerina! How many dancers are in your company? And how does someone that would like to be in your com-
pany get in? We have really grown! And the current company of dancers and crew is just an amazingly talented wonderful bunch. None of us could do it alone! We now have about 35 dancers, 5 crew, and a bunch that do both. You can see their headshots and bios on our web site atballetpixelle.org. We have auditions about 3 times a year and the complete details are at balletpixelle.org/audition.html. Basically, the applicant needs to be over 6 months old and mature (in both lives – this is dance not drama :-), able to manipulate your avatar’s movement well in all directions, have a basic knowledge of animations and gestures, be able to receive and respond to direction, and above all, be committed! A lot of time and energy and commitment is involved. Stage terminology, real life dance training, and various dressing/filing/building skills are preferred. Real life dance trainging is not required. Learn it here! No poseballs, synchronizing

scripts, dance balls, or anything else automatic is used. This is real dance. I create all original animations (which are like dance steps) which then go gestures, or groups, according to my choreography (like sentences) and each dancer has to learn them, time the activation with other dancers and the original music, be able to control changes and problems. It is not easy. Ok, now for the new ballet… Avatara. What is it about, and how did you come up with this great ballet? Avatara is about a First Life dancer who does really come into Second Life and dances a pas de deux with a Ballet Pixelle dancer! So here we are exploring the blending of realities and seeing what dance movements are the same and which are different and how they can be combined to produce an emotion or mood. Ava is the First Life dancer and Tara is the Second Life dancer. We are examining what an avatar really is in terms of movement. Through this story, looking at what can be done in a virtual world, we
can see the more whimisical side of a ballet. My goal from the start has been to explore and examine the interaction and intersection of physical and virtual dance and movement – so this ballet was planned from the beginning. The specific ideas: one came from a watercolor I had seen, some from my musical collaboration with Solary Clary (First Life: Sora Izumikawa) who wrote the music specifically for this ballet (as well as Living Goddess and Shuzenji), some ideas came from a movement itself, like the Suitcases section where normal-looking avatars suddenly fold themselves up into suitcases. I am influenced by music, color, sound, stories, so many things… and especially my extensive travels in First Life. Cecilia Mistwalker would like to thank Inarra Saarinen for this wonderful interview. And hopes that everyone that has read this article will come and watch the new ballet by Inarra! Quat 32, 21, 107

Sounds of Mother Earth
A must teleport for all avis, regardless of gender, persuasions or beliefs, Sounds of Mother Earth, a newly opened sim created by anastasia Adder, a cause-oriented SL and RL singer. Her creation is definitely more than an audio-visual feast celebrating our grand, blue planet.
by Troy Aristocarnas Photos: Kala Balut, Alvar Inglewood
What it offers is a truly immersive experience that can be enjoyed best with some prerequisite tweaks of your viewer settings. Basic would be setting the sun at midnight and the viewer’s media audio turned on to capture the message which the sim conveys. As an added delight to a tour of this sim, Ms. Adder provides visitors with wing-like attachments which mimic the transport boosters of astronauts in their spacewalk travel.
Events
Yes, a complete visit and immersion into Sounds of Mother Earth entails orbits around a replica of our dear globe in its cloud-draped, blue splendor. But wait, there’s still more than meets the eye in the place’s attractions that goes beyond the realm of some sci-fi adventure or some science lessons. Anastasia’s inimitable build, more than anything else, is meant to prick our awareness and concern for Mother Earth, and in her own words, for us to “be conscious (that) we live on a beautiful planet and it’s time to think to live better.” Toward the pursuit of this end, several dimensions were incorporated in Sounds of the Earth that is best toured in group orbits with the contraption called “Sunset Wings” mentioned earlier. There’s a kaleidoscope of textures to choose from as one soars in the sim’s offerings. De rigueur, of course, is that of

the Earth itself, which can, in an instant, be contrasted with the fiery coloration that could be found within the deep bowels of our planet. True, such contrasts may be meant to depict the fact that juxtaposed with the beauty of our world, are also many of the abuses that we inflict upon the very mother that nourishes us. There’s the devastation of nature, war, starvation of peoples, anastasia says among other maladies of humanity. Nonetheless, Ms Adder is not a hopeless pessimist. Her Sounds of the Earth also provides a paean to those whose crusade has been peace, harmony, and solidarity. Thus, the sim also displays images of the Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela, as well as pictures
of impoverished but happy children, signifying that ours is still a beautiful world to live in, but rallying cries need to be heeded to preserve and maintain it. Sounds of Mother Earth is certainly a minuscule effort compared to the immensity of the problems that we and our planet are facing. Be that as it may, it very well can serve as a spark that can bring others into the cause, as anastasia, likewise an officer of SL real estate firm Hivaoa Holdings, plans to seek more SL and RL artists to contribute to her creation, and even hold live concerts in her build. What she has done for sure is beyond merely cursing the darkness but lighting a candle, providing some glimmer of hope or inspiration that may rally others to action. The following original song composition by ana featured at the sim perhaps appropriately sums up the challenge to us all.

My first Article I thought only fitting to be about the first store that was not a freebie store that I visited in SL. Songs~n~Roses is an endearing place where everyone seems like friends and family. The first time I went in there with my friend, Darling, I met Kev Oyen and Pepper Ducatillon. They are the owners of this wonderful establishment.

One of the few places that offer 100% satisfaction guaranteed. The name pretty much says what they sell but it isn’t as simple as it sounds. You get a rose with pretty much any song in it. It is not just a partial song but the complete song from beginning to end. Over the years they have expanded their business to include different types of roses, they started with the Red Sculpty Rose and the Red Sculpty Mouth Rose. Now they have the 12 color Sculpty Rose with opening and closing petals, Boutonnières, Hair Roses or the very beautiful Diamond Edition which has music note particles. You can choose roses with one song or up to nine songs. Prices vary by what you are looking for but can range from L$ 300 to L$ 1,100 and special orders may be more. They have a variety in their store
you can just pick and buy or you can fill out an order form from the front desk and send it to Pepper and she will put together about anything you want.

An amazing store where you can buy yourself or your sweetheart a gift they can not find anywhere else. It is also a great place to buy a wedding gift, anniversary gift, birthday gift or “I Love You” gift. All you do is wear the rose and then turn your sounds up. Kev and Pepper have always given complete satisfaction and will treat you like their best friend. I know this because of so many roses I have gotten from them I am now one of their best friends. I have even started playing Tiny Empires for the Kingdom of Legends with them. Kev and Pepper themselves have quite a unique story. In the beginning Kev started the business from a desire to want to hear his songs when and where he wanted to listen to them. So he worked with some talented people who helped
him get his business off the ground. Through them he met Pepper as just a casual friend. They all started talking on Webcam and Kev says he fell in love at first sight. Pepper flew to the US to meet their mutual friends and Kev couldn’t stay away. They met at the St Louis airport on Valentines Day in 2008 for that very first time. But after falling in love Kev went to England to ask Pepper’s dad if he could marry her. It took a lot of work to get Pepper moved over to the US but eventually they got their dream and were married in March of 2009. Since then they run their blooming business together and are constantly making new and exciting changes. So visit this amazing store. I assure you you have never seen anything like it.

They’re in it to have fun and don’t tolerate any drama. It shows!

Lesbian Paradise is a huge club boasting over 21,000 VIPs spread over 8 different groups.
Vavavoom Denimore has owned this place for around two years now. Around the clock events with DJs, prizes, and VIPs partying 24/7 have made this the most popular hangout around for lesbians. Men are not allowed on the sim. A variety of music is offered with each DJ having their own different style but most of it is very danceable. The club is known for big money prizes and their newest DJ, Candycane25 Erin, has brought in big crowds with store sponsored events so VIPs can win great priz-
es in addition to the contests. There are dancers and hosts. I have been here quite a few times now and never has the place been empty. The dance area was just remodeled and looks quite nice. In addition to the club, there is lots to do. The pretty tropical surroundings have lots of waterfalls, a romantic cave with a couples dance chim and cuddles spots on the beach. Members can even enjoy a free dungeon with poses. And with so many ladies, there is of course, a huge shopping mall on the sim.

Having your cake and eating it too by ChloeRed Mornington Photos: Kala Balut
Log out We all know that Second Life is a breeding field for fantasy fulfillment. From role playing a blood thirsty vampire that fights zombies that are trying to eat their human lover, to a cracked out college kid growing up in the slums trying to beat the lifestyle of a druggy whore to make a living. In Second Life you can log in and in seconds be whoever you want to be. Maybe that is why thousands log in daily every morning with their cigarettes and coffee and don’t log out until late at night. Taking breaks in between giving themselves just enough time to make dinner for their real life significant other and making sure that the kids have done their homework. I’ve always been raised that one day I will fall in love with one amazing person and make a life with them and be happily ever after. I still believe that is the ultimate human goal, to find that one that you can build a happy, healthy life with. Second Life also offers this opportunity as well. This virtual world is full of romantic gar-
dens to court a person that you have set your eyes on. And many Second Life businesses that cater to having the wedding of your dreams with honeymoon packages and the whole nine yards. If you have never experienced a Second Life wedding it really is amazing. It doesn’t matter where you have met this person but somehow you both share the same ideas, the same things make you happy and in conversation you both have begun to flirt with each other, spend hours on end dancing with each other and have even taken things to a sexual and intimate level in your chats that have left you logging out and still thinking about that one amazing person that you have been spending your time with.

For a single person this might be a dream come true. Maybe something that you have given up on... falling in love is not always easy to find, but somehow you have found it within a world that allows anyone and everyone to be and look just like what they always wanted to be and look like. Often behind the computer screen shy and timid people can become very outgoing, popular
and often say whatever is on their mind without holding back. With that said, a virtual love connection can be quite easy. What happens though when that love connection, that deep bond that has been created with that one person becomes more real than your very own real life? When you are married in real life and partnered in Second Life what is considered crossing the line into becoming a cheater?
Is partnering in Second Life and being married to someone else in real life cheating on the person that you have made sacred vows to in your real life? I’ve asked a few friends and Second Life’ers these very questions and I have gotten several different responses. Some believe that Second Life is separate from their real life.
It’s just a game that they play when they are bored or just to pass the time away, even if they have made really good friends to them it’s still just a game that they can log in and

just to be with this magical person. Well, I’m not going be judgmental only because I only hear one side of the story and I cannot say that their marriage was already on the road to disaster. But if I put myself in the shoes of the partner not playing Second Life I would probably feel very sad and unwanted watching my wife spend time with a 2D avatar hours on end and not spending her precious time with the real person that loves her. Just Saying! Honestly I feel that this is one of those things that you just have to say “to each his own” Personally if I’m married to someone or when I get married to someone I sure as hell hope they don’t even know what Second Life is. But for those who have managed to make peace with their real life partner and convinced them that their Second Life partner can never ond Life in their mind they are dat- come between them then you have ing that same person in real life. just achieved something that everyDivorced and moved across the one wants. I have heard many devastating stories of families torn apart because one married person logged onto Second Life and found someone that they thought they just couldn’t live without.
