One more issue to add to it’s 15 sisters! I have been planning and plotting to take over the world. Alright, that is just a joke! (... NOT!) Let’s see what has been going on, we have had the Hair Fair 2010, which as usual has been a massive success, let’s not mention my Lindens balance took a serious hit! I just realised that I can change hair and outfits every hour on the hour and not run out of clothes for a very long amount of time. It is a frightening thought indeed. However, all goofing around and shopping aside, I am really delighted to announce that Heartbeat has teamed up with DDesign to help find their fashioni-

sta. Every month we will have a spread with the monthly winners until the “Ultimate” D-Design Fashionista is crowned early summer. Our shopping specialist Keekee has it all explained to you in details further in the issue! I do have some more news for you, but I would rather keep my lips sealed until next issue, I am telling you it is going to be GOOD! Don’t forget to tune into our new shopping/fashion feed, with the coolest designers and content creators around the grid! heartbeatmag.co.cc/fashion I hope you enjoy this issue… xoxo Angel

How to find what you are looking for – and be found

If you have spent any time exploring the world of Second Life then you have probably used the search window. Using search is straightforward: simply typing in the search box and hitting the enter key is usually enough to give you the results you need. But what if it doesn’t? There are a few things you can do to make the results more relevant. Firstly, check the maturity rating checkboxes in the search window. If any of these are unchecked Second Life will exclude results with that rating. You will only be able to select the Adult checkbox if your age has been verified, and adult content is enabled in preferences. Your avatar will be age verified if you have payment information on file, or if you have completed the free age verification process on the Second Life web site.

Within search it is possible to be more precise in your searches. For example, if you are looking for listings including either skirts or dresses you could enter: skirts OR dresses If you are looking for a castle, but are not interested in roleplay settings, you could enter: castle -roleplay Sometimes, the specific tabs for people, places, groups, etc. will return different results to the “All tab. This is because the specific category tabs use different logic to the main search.

9

10

Finally, there are times when something more random is needed. For these times, the Destination Guide is perfect, as it contains an ever-changing list of places to visit. To view the list, either open the Find dialog and click the Destination Guide Being found The method for ensuring that information appears in search depends on the type of listing. Events All events automatically appear in search, and cannot be removed unless the event is cancelled. Profiles Your profile is, by default, displayed in search. It cannot be completely removed, but the information can be limited to name, born date and account type only. To do this, go to your profile (the second tab from the top on the sidebar) and uncheck the box labelled “Show me in Search”.

Groups Search visibility can be set in the group’s properties, in the General section, by checking or unchecking the “Show in search” checkbox. You must have the appropriate permissions in the group to set or clear this option. Land Any land parcel that is 128 square meters or larger can appear in search, but there is a fee of L$30 per week to do so. To make the land visible, simply go into “About land” for the parcel, choose the “Options” tab and check “Show Place in Search”. Don’t forget to set your teleport landing point first. Objects Individual rezzed objects can also be included in search results. However, their contents cannot be listed, so it is best to make sure that the name and description contain the terms you wish to be matched by search. Note that

items will only appear in search results if the parcel of land they are placed on is also listed. Classifieds Whenever you search, two dif-

ferent sets of results are returned. Most of the space is taken up with the main search results, but you will also see a grey box to the right containing another set of results. These are paid classified ads. To place an ad, open your profile, click on “My Picks”, click on

the plus (+) button below the list and select “New Classified”. Fill in the details and click “Publish” to allow others to see your ad. When you create an ad, you can set your own price for it. This will help determine the order in which the ads appear. Unlike the other details, the price cannot be changed after the ad has been published. There is also a checkbox to make the ad auto-renew each week – if this is cleared the ad will disappear after the current week If you view your own ad, you will see statistics not visible on other people’s classified listings. These will tell you how effective your ad is by monitoring clicks on the “Teleport”, “Show on Map” and “Profile” buttons.

If you have any questions not covered here, drop them on a notecard to me (Bert Calamari) or send them by email to bert@heartbeatmag.co.cc. All questions will be answered, and may also appear in the magazine. In this case, questions may be edited for clarity.

DJ of the Month

16

Why do you DJ? Easy (question), I love music. Music moves me. I can be transcended in time and space through lyrics and the beat. Nothing is a mood elevator such as a good tune. Nothing can remind of you of a memory either good or bad like a song can. Like the first time you meet someone and a certain song is playing, you remember that person and hear that song playing. What style/genre of music? Also another easy one; like I said earlier, I love music. I love all kinds of music. I would say my style is alternative – I play mostly rock, heavy metal, alternative and industrial. I say I am alternative because of the songs I string together. One minute I can be playing some old Front 242 then follow it up with Beastie Boys. I like the music I play to flow. I believe that DJs are ringmasters.

Where do you DJ? What is your schedule? Ah, currently I DJ for the Best of Second Life Radio (BOSL). You can listen to me on Wednesdays 3-5 SLT, justlisten.boslradio.com (Very impressive; I did go check DJ Jezabell out there and was delighted by her professional, PGclean yet charismatic side.) I also DJ for my brother's SL Football team, KJS Ravens. Currently, I am not at any club full time, my RL work schedule is too erratic for me to commit to any formal club schedule – but I do love DJ’ing for clubs and am available to schedule events in advance. What is your most memorable experience DJ'ing? Another easy question; I used to live and work on an RP sim. I was the Sunday morning DJ for Ktox. Sometimes the night before, I would come in really late

DJ of the Month

and then have to get up to DJ at 8 SLT; sometimes, I was drunk or (with a) hang-over. My most memorable time DJ’ing was one Sunday morning on the RP sim when my SL daughter TP'd fifteen or so of her friends for a rave/ chicken dance in the street of this RP sim. Everyone who was there were role players, and we were all still in my role. I laughed so hard, I snorted on mic. What are your favorite three songs? My three favorite songs? Wow! Of all time, of today, this hour? Hmm… Oh, I know. 1. Nina Simone's “I Put a Spell on You.” I love her voice and in this song how strongly her love for a man comes out. 2. Bob Marley's “Trench Town Rock.” I love jamming to this, and what he says is

true “One good thing about music, when it hits – you feel no pain.” Lastly, one or Radiohead's song Myxomatosis – it’s just captivating music. Is there someone you want to give a shout-out to? I want to give a shout-out to my kids, Absinthe Blindeside, Mercedez Snowbear, and Kahlen Parx; (to) my SL/RL man Mercutio Sands, and my Brother Khalied Jameson – thanks for always supporting me. Do you have any advice for SL noobs? I love noobs. My advice to noobs is to voice first before you partner with someone and explore outside of the sex dungeons and strip clubs and see what Second Life really has to offer.

DJ of the Month This writer enjoyed meeting and savoring what the SL female named Jezabell Barbosa has to offer. She exudes confidence and intelligence and has a truly sultry voice. I've listened to her at several different venues and found her to be warm and giving of herself to all that teleport in to party. To quote this lovely long-timer of SL: “As a DJ, I bring with me to the venue a nice mix of music and dirty talk, a wide range of music tastes and the ability to play music by request. So if you are looking for a naughty vixen of a DJ who is friendly, outgoing, naughty, and nice, IM me or send me a notecard. Yes, she really is a true DJ ringmaster with a unique talent, sexy style, and erotic grace. Kudos to you DJ Jezabell .

There appears to be a rebellion among Second Life (SL) residents since Linden Lab (LL) Community Representative Terrence Linden announced this August the acceptance of sixteen-year old residents to the Main Grid. This move dovetails with the LL decision to close Teen Second Life effective end-2010. This two-pronged LL action, to be fair, has very valid points as can be gleaned from a SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis. By closing the Teen Grid, LL can focus on improving its services on the Main Grid which can likewise benefit from the creativity of the sixteen to seventeen-year olds coming in at year-end. Many SL residents, however, are more concerned with the weaknesses and threats of LL lowering the age requirement of SL resident. In less than a month since Terrence’s announcement, which

LL tried to positively spin as “The Future of Teens in Second Life”, generated in SL’s blogsite nearly two thousand comments, most of which are adverse. And this is not to mention the concerns expressed in other blogsites independent of SL. Teen access to be limited to General maturity rating The apprehensions are very real and valid, and are in fact concerns which have always hounded the Main Grid. These include the issue of pedophiles and the underage jail baits whose litigious parents, aided by an overzealous media, could conceivably threaten the present SL citizens. In a nutshell, many SL residents fear that these cases could escalate with the entry of sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds. On this question, Terrence for Linden Lab has a stock answer: “Second Life Residents under 18

as well, both one on one and in groups. As we move forward with this process, we will be in close conversation with those impacted” Terrence said in an e-mailed response to a media inquiry. In the meantime that more specifics have yet to be spelled out by LL, some SL residents are resilient enough to think of creative ways to deal with potential in-world problems come January 2011. Some shrug off the issue and simply say that they will simply avoid clubs, parties, or places with General ratings where the teens will Simple solutions that surely congregate. Others simply SL old-timers can do say it’s back to the old ASL (age, To be sure, LL appears to have its sex, location) thing when it comes ears close to ground to fine tune to talking with new acquaintancits move on the teen integration. es. Essentially, what they’re concerned with is the porosity of the borders between General and Mature and Adult sites in-world. Such porous situations can extend to other issues like IMs and partnering among adults and teens.

Ballet Pixelle's 10th Ballet!

Ballet Pixelle produces professional works that creatively enhances the viewers’ experience while attending a ballet performance. Audience members can see classical, neoclassical, contemporary, and novel ballets that cannot be seen elsewhere. New ballets are premiered with original stories, choreography, and music with dancers from around the world all dancing together in one space. Now I will take you on a journey into the life of Inarra Saarinen, founder, and artistic director, Ballet Pixelle: Where did you get the idea of your latest ballet, “one nine four two?” The idea of our latest ballet came from my travels. I travel to other lands and cultures continuously and am deeply influenced by these places and people. For example, our “Living Goddess” ballet, about a real child living god-

dess in Nepal, was an outgrowth from my own trip to Katmandu where I learned about, and actually saw, her. And where have you traveled recently? In some of my latest travels, I went to Prague, Czech Republic, and Rwanda, Africa. In Prague, there was a tank in the huge, empty town square. It was a visually stark reminder of war, and it made me reflect on what it must have been like to see tanks actually roll into the heart of your city. This is something we have never experienced in the United States, ever, and do not even have a way to put it in context. My imagination took over. I also went to the Jewish area and museum, and then had an even more first-hand experience by seeing each proclamation of what the Jews could not do. It didn't happen all at once, but right by right, they were

Events

deprived of everything a normal family could have. I then went to Rwanda. As you may know, Rwanda has just barely survived one of the most horrific genocides in history. Only ten years ago, two-thirds of the population was killed, targeting women and children so they would not breed. Which brings us to the newest ballet that you've choreographed. Lastly, in this round of horror, I learned the story of the town of Lidice, in the Czech Republic. This, unfortunately, is a very specific way to tell the story of the greater wars. As retribution for assassinating Hitler's right-hand man, a town was chosen at random. This town was Lidice. All males over sixteen were put up against barn walls and shot, all women (were) taken to the gas chamber, and the children either

chosen to be placed in an SS family for “Germanization” or killed in the gas camps. Dogs were shot, houses were demolished, graves dug up, and flowers planted. The town's name was then taken of all maps. I thought here is a terrible, but very specific, event that can perhaps tell the story of the devastation of a family the way the dehumanization of war cannot. I am continuously working towards exploring the relationships between physical and virtual movement and dance. I am also very interested in blended realities. In “Avatara,” our previous ballet, we had a physical dancer doing a pas de deux with one of our “virtual” dancers. In “one nine four two,” we have physical world multi-media coming into the virtual world of Second Life. Video and still photographs are used in conduction with the virtual dancers. This was a conscious

I remember when I got my first place in SL. The excitement involved – I had arrived! I was a “grown up” in SL. I had finally found the place where I could relax, change clothes without embarrassment, and most importantly, stamp with my own style. But as the dizzying effect the excitement began to wear off, the realization hit! I didn’t own anything – nothing, save for a few clothes and several objects that others had given me (including one rather forlorn looking houseplant).

I needed furniture, but not just any furniture. I wanted style, I wanted quality, and I wanted a one-stop shop. I am not the type who appreciates traipsing from place to place, looking at this, “wowing” over that, moaning at the price of something else, and then being left confused because I couldn’t remember where I saw one thing or another. Under circumstances like these, I tend to give up in disgust and go home. That’s right, boys, not all of us women are “born to shop!”

Customer satisfaction surfaces on a probe of a shopping haven Just when I was about to give up it remain there. So how did you spend your time when you first came to SL? I cleaned Windows, trying to stay logged in for more than three minutes. I had an old laptop at that time. To be honest, I didn’t move away from that sim at all for some weeks. While there, I met a couple of Norwegian girls on that very same sim and they showed me stuff. One of them is the girl I work together with now, Reven Rosca. After first renting a small piece of land, we moved on and Tell us Winona, what led you started making things. Over time, and several purchases, my curiosity began to get the better of me and I wanted to know more about the creators and designers behind Prime Furniture. It was one day when I had a query that I got to meet Winona Wiefel. Bright, enthusiastic and willing to go out of her way to help me, I could not help but to like her immediately. So, I was very pleased to have had the opportunity to interview this busy lady and discuss her world of design.

For me it’s about just rezzing a prim and seeing what comes to me. I use textures I like and play around with them. I also think it’s important to support those who make sculpts and sell them full perm. Just seeing a new sculpt can give inspiration. Have your ideas and creations expanded since you first opened the store? Oh yes! We started like everyone else, with basic things. Since then sculpts have changed a lot. We have invested a lot in animations and engines over time as well. Yes. Your creations certainly come fully loaded.

And why is that? I don’t know. We started off with a free MLP, then we got some more and noticed that there is a huge difference in quality out there. And, it is amazing how the animations work and give the furniture life and the avatars using them. I am not talking about the sexual animations now, btw. We focus a lot on fun and cuddles and that’s what we get good feedback on too. In SL, there are so many creators. So it's important to stand out in some way. Yes. So all of the animations are creations of yours? Not at all. I do animate but I am not good enough yet. So, we buy from the best and support their great work. I make some of the fun ones.

Another thing I have noticed about your business is that when someone has a question you are available almost immediately. Is that something you pride yourself on?

Blackheart’s is a very popular destination for SL club hoppers. It’s fully staffed 24/7, so you can

always find a party. The music is mostly 80s rock but 60s, 70s, and 90s end up in the mix sometimes too.

To quote its co-owner, Chingy Chun, “… the unique thing about Blackheart’s is it’s three and onehalf years old, and it’s never had to have contest or special events to keep its popularity. It’s built and thrives on great music, staff interaction with patrons, and a very warm home-like feeling.” The two owners, Katerina Neiro and Chingy, bought the club in June of this year and have since expanded it to a round-the-clock club with live DJs. They have also taken great care to make sure the club has a friendly environment where people can come to meet or party with friends without being

bothered or offended. Newbies are welcomed with open arms and lots of freebie gifts. Both staff and guest are expected to follow their code of conduct and dress code: Having a fill of tunes and shopping bags I hate when my whole screen is constantly filled with annoying super spankers or excessive gesturing, so I particularly appreciate that part of their policy. Staff is encouraged to interact with guests – meaning they actually have to talk, not just gesture. But, my favorite part of Blackheart’s is the music! Alli&Alli Hair, Inedit, Roughnecks, Digistream, Adored, B&G Shoes, and Divalicious. But, there are some real nice newer or lesser known designer shops there too: Hopeless Designs (gorgeous shoes ladies!), Wear Your Style, O’hara male and female clothing, JN Designs and much more.

They have accessories from leg warmers to wedding rings. This is a unique store where you can get your complete look, and how, Dani expounds here.

What inspires your designs? I've always been surrounded by clothes and fabrics because my mother is a tailor/seamstress. I have inherited her love for fashion and I am a textile designer in RL. For me, SL is a challenge to extend my artistic nature, and my designs are results of my imagination. We understand you are launching a really big competition. What is it called and what can you tell us about it? We have just started the grid-wide search for the face of D-DESIGN. We are looking for the woman who most perfectly represents the style and versatility of our label. Each month, we will choose a DDESIGN Fashionista, and once a year, from those monthly winners, we will pick the Annual Miss DDESIGN. There will be many prizes in cash, gifts, and advertising features.

Who can enter the contest? The only condition are to have a female avatar, to be a D-DESIGN group member and, of course, to be a fan of and wear our clothing and accessories. Where did the idea for this contest come from? I think it came rather naturally, having a growing store and membership and an excellent feedback on our clothes. How does someone join your group? There is a group invite in the store that gives you a link to follow on a touch, or just IM me, and I will send you an invitation. There is also a mail-server that sends info on all updates, but its members have no privileges as the in-world group member have. Another way would be to look up my name, pull up the group name from my profile and join.

Why does it cost L$200 to join your group when so many other groups are free? I like to offer my loyal group members special editions, gifts and discounts. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who join the groups to get their gifts then leave them just as quickly. Therefore, there is a new trend in SL among groups and it's called “The Enrollment Fee. Once again, it is only to protect our loyal members and to prevent misuse of group benefits. What are you looking for in your D-DESIGN Fashionista? We are looking for women who are photogenic and stylish, skillful with SL clothing and accessories, and responsible, collaborative, and comfortable working as a team. You have some fabulous gifts for the Monthly Fashionista and for the

Annual Miss D-DESIGN winners. Where do these gifts and donations come from? I am very proud and happy to have found those sponsors for the contest, and some of them will create a special gift just for this event! Besides a crown and jewelry, there will be shoes, accessories, and furniture gifts. And a special thanks goes to Heartbeat Magazine for the media coverage; I don't think I could have found a better one! What else can you tell us about yourself, your fashions or your contest? The detailed information about the contest can be found in the main store, but what I really wish is for it to be fun. Anyone can IM me and ask more about the contest. And as for me, I wish I had more free time to meet and talk

to people. I try to be in the store whenever it is possible. I also have many new ideas that are waiting to be released. So the best way to find out more about me is to join the group and become a part of D-DESIGN Fashion

Can We Have Less of SL Drama? by ChloeRed Mornington

Even though thousands of users log on to Second Life daily, it really can be a very small world. Just like your real life has drama sometimes, SL drama can be more stressful and carry over into your RL. People become a lot bolder when they can type behind the comfort of their own laptops or computers. One can flirt better, fight better, and even have sex better. This is so because with typing, you can delay your responses and think about your questions and answers before even opening their virtual mouths. In a land where you can be anything you want to be, why not be your true self? I’ve asked several Second Lifers this same question, and I received several different answers. From one avatar interviewed she replied, “Most people in Second Life pretend to be something they are not only because they do not even like who they really are. Me being some-

one that is the same in-world and out of (SL) world, I have gotten myself into a lot of issues, because I trusted people that truly were not real and everything about them was fake and at the end of the day, they didn’t even care about the mess they created or who it involved. They just hit the log out button and that was the end of it.” I do agree with this statement because I have been involved with a lot of SL drama myself, and believe me, it is so stressful and all you can think about is what’s going to happen next. People can become quite nasty on Second Life and even take things to the extreme of harassing someone in real life. Truth is that behind the avatar, you never know who you are really dealing with. The Internet can be a dangerous tool, and if you piss off the wrong person online, he/she may just take things into his/her own

Online Adolescence of the Thirty-year-olds hands. Second Life is a great place to meet new people and make friends with others, but it’s also a breeding ground for tons of drama. In some cases, it’s almost like starting high school all over again at thirty years old! In everydaylife dealing with friends, family, girlfriends, boyfriends, roommates, etc., it is impossible to avoid some type of drama in your life. In a game where most people go to escape the trials, tribulations, ups and downs of life, why on Earth should we entertain drama? Can’t we just log in, enjoy the online streaming music and the fact that

we can hang out and have a conversation with someone in China without arguing about whose pixel screwed who and fighting about who is more of a best friend? Or do we thrive and live for the excitement that drama brings to our lives? I believe that everyone deep down loves the excitement of drama, but the thing that is so crazy about it is that drama is like a tornado or a hurricane, the winds and rain is fun in the beginning, but when the storm is gone there is so much devastation. Feelings can be hurt, lives can be changed and hearts will defiantly be broken.

Living with Cancer

The Jewell Schnyder Story by Jewell Schnyder Photos by Ji Dallagio

I remember as I was growing up hearing the word Cancer I always thought, “that will never happen to me or anyone I love”. Then life surprised me. My Grandma and Grandpa both had different types of cancer. I helped take care of Grandpa for the last year of his life. Watching what it did to him and how much pain he was in was really hard to see. I will never in my life forget the last day and how Cancer took his life. Was I sad? Of Course! But I knew he was in a much better place, a place where he was no longer in pain. That was enough to open my eyes and I began to read about different types of cancers, I went to cancer seminars, I wanted to educate myself on what could possible happen to family, friends and loved ones. My Mom got breast cancer. She fought it, she went through chemotherapy and did everything she was told. In the end she had one breast removed, and luck-

ily the cancer never came back. To this day that scares me more than anything. I make sure to have mammograms and pap test done regularly. And I constantly do self exams. And then my Dad had prostate cancer and had to have one of his testicles removed. Wonderfully, he is a survivor. I know they are looking for cures for cancer everyday of our lives. Having cancer is never easy on anyone, but when it is someone so very close to you it is that much harder. I am speaking of someone that is as close to me as anyone can be, she is an Angel… she is “My Daughter”. When my daughter was 17 years old she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She went through test after test and watching her go through all that pain literally tore me apart. She finally got to where her cancer was in remission, but that was when they told her she may never have kids. That tore

us both up really bad. When she was 18 and getting ready to graduate high school and go out into the world alone, she went in for her yearly test. They told us that the cancer was back. They wanted her to do chemotherapy but she refused to. I wasn’t about to force her into doing something she felt so strongly against, so she chose to take medications in hopes of fighting it that way. She knew if the medications didn’t work she may have to resort to the chemo treatments. It was an emotional roller coaster for me to see my own child suffering with this horrid disease that could take her life. We went back to the doctors 6 months later for more test and again her cancer was in remission. Her question to them again was could she have children at some point in her life? This time they told her that it was highly likely that she could have a child of her own.

Well by the Grace of God, as he watched over her she got pregnant. Her pregnancy was very rough on her and she spent a lot of bed ridden days. However, on November 29, 2007 she had a baby girl. She is truly our Angel from God! We have been so blessed. A little over a year ago she added a son to our family. God has blessed us and graced us not once but twice. She is going through some medical issues right now and has to go to the doctor every 2 months. Her cancer is active and she also has PID, (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). We know it is time for what has needed to be done for years, however the doctors don’t like doing a hysterectomy on women under the age of 25, but at this point we don’t have a choice! She is happy and living a wonderful life with her children. Our family has had many fights but we have been blessed more times than not!
