Turkey Season has started! I don’t know for anyone else but from Thanksgiving Day till after New Years’s it is Turkey Nightmare Hell. Having “Turkey Nightmares” aside, I do love the end of the Year and the first snow in RL and SL! It is always glorious to see what our residents come up with to decorate their regions. I always remember my first time skating at the Blue Note, bearing into account that in RL I have never been anywhere near real ice skates! As we did last year, this is the End of/Beginning of the Year MASSIVE Issue! More Djs, more naughty Dancers... and a whole lot more of everything! You may

wonder why? One answer could be, well Angel has most likely lost it poor thing! But No! This issue will carry over until the End of January for the simple reason to allow the Heartbeat Family Staff team to take a breather! So, From the Heartbeat Family please accept our Best Wishes for the Holidays Season and we will be back after New Year’s with more! One last thing to keep you warm at night, The Dancer of the Year Award is coming back again! Will tell you more next issue. Love, xoxo Angel

Another new release of the Second Life viewer is with us, and this one brings a major change: display names. For years, residents have been asking for the ability to change their avatar's name. Display names allow you to do this, in a very flexible way. To allow this to happen there have been a number of changes to Second Life.

11

12

Logging In The biggest change is the way you log in. From viewer 2.3 onwards, instead of logging in with your avatar's name you can log in with your username. For existing avatars, your username is formed from your avatar's name but in the form of firstname.surname, so Philip Linden becomes philip. linden. New avatars can choose a unique username as part of the signup process. Currently you can either use your username or your name as previously, but at some point we can expect logins on Second Life websites, and maybe even the viewer itself, to increasingly prefer usernames. A Different Name With a constant username used for logins, your name as displayed in Second Life can be changed to almost anything you want. There are only a few restrictions:

- you can only change your name once every seven days, although you can reset it back to your original name at any time. - your name must contain at least one letter or number, but it can contain most punctuation marks (hyphens, apostrophes, full stops, spaces etc.). - there is no way to ensure that your display name is unique - anyone can choose the same name as you. With the possibility of your friends and acquaintances changing their names every week, finding or recognising someone could become difficult. To reduce this confusion, in almost all places where the display name is shown the username is also displayed. In other places, such as your friends list and in chat, the username will appear in a tooltip when you hover over a name. Search has also been changed so that matches will be found in

13

14

both an avatar's name and their username. For developers, there are new functions to specifically retrieve an avatar's display name or username. Existing scripts will still work but will always return the avatar's original name. New accounts with only a username will appear to have the surname "Resident", so if the username is john123, scripts will see the name as john123 Resident. Changing Your Name The option to change your display name can be found in the "My Profile" tab of the sidebar. Within this tab, click "Edit Profile" and then click the wrench icon under "Display Name". To alter your name you must enter it twice, under "New Display Name" and "Type your new name again to confirm". Your name will be changed when you click "Save", although it can take

up to 24 hours for the change to take effect in all Second Life systems. If you decide that you do not like your new name you can change it back to your default name at any time. To do this, follow the same process as above, but instead of entering a new name click "Reset". Other Changes There are a number of other features that you might want to try that have been introduced in updates since the original release of viewer 2: - in 2.3: Group owners can control who can schedule events on group-owned land - in 2.3: A new tutorial has been added in the sidebar - in 2.3: Pop-up hints appear on commonly used features, such as walking, chat and inventory - in 2.2: You can "tear off" tabs from the sidebar into separate

floating windows by simply dragging the tab away from the side of the screen. A new button on the new window makes it dock with the sidebar again - in 2.2: The bottom bar is customisable, so you can rearrange the buttons by dragging them - in 2.1: Buttons on the bottom bar can be hidden or shown by right-clicking on the bar - in 2.1: The chat bar can be resized by dragging its right edge - in 2.1: Voice morphing allows you to change or disguise your voice in-world with various effects

There have also been many minor updates, bug fixes and performance improvements, so if you didn't like viewer 2 when it was first released it may be worth giving it another try. If you have any questions not covered here, drop them on a notecard to me (Bert Calamari) or send them by email to bert@heartbeatmag.co.cc. All questions will be answered, and may also appear in the magazine. In this case, questions may be edited for clarity.

Ladies, I will look for YOU under the Mistletoe. rawr ~ Happy Holidays ~ Bently This writer is fanning herself as she tells you... YUMMY and Sizzling and SeXXXy. Bently radiates sexual appeal across the entire room and probably the entire sim. He reaches out and grabs a woman's mind, interest and libido. He has a buffed avatar body with colorful gorgeous tattoos. He is eye candy of the smooth chocolatety kind and gives true meaning to all Male. He can erotically emote one into a horny heated mess as you can see from the teaser above. (Blinks and recalls that I need to concentrate on writing this and starts fanning again). Bently is worth every linden tip given to him and yes I found

myself being very generous in my multiple tipping. lol. He is confident in his sensuality and comes off the stage to dance all close to a girl as he gives her his full attention and more. Thus more tipping is triggered. Bently disclosed that he is also an SL Escort ... oh my, my, my. I might have to ask my Heartbeat SL Magazine boss, if I can interview (after extensive research) the best of the best SL Escorts. P.S.: I know now what I will be asking SL's Santa for this SL Christmas; something buff, chocolatey with a red bow on his head. (Double entendre on purpose wicked grins).

sierran Viatruso: Well, there's really not one I can really choose. All of them have been great so far. I mean there was a few rough patches after a couple of months of starting Second Life, but Most of them from when I started, 'till now, Have always been my favorites, from meeting and making new friends, to have the careers and family I have now... But if Ireally had to pick one, I would have to say meeting and marrying, my best friend and Sl partner, test002 Bunjie. Share with us your favorite tips in SL, be it dancing or just goofing off: sierran Viatruso: LOL. well, again, there's soo many to choose from, it's hard to choose just one.. But I think the most thing about enjoying SL, as I said, meeting and making new friends... I always try to be nice to the new people coming into SL because, Hey!

We were New once too!... And We were very lucky to find people that would help us out... And I think some of the Older Players forget that.. I think they forget what it's like to be new to this world and have to learn the bits and bobs of trying to walk, fly , run ..etc.. Best tip I can really give for dancing or goofing off, just be yourself... I mean yah sure, we come in this world wanting to be something other than what we are in real life, but it never hurts to instill your own real life personality into the avatar... It's not like the person you are talking to is gonna know its the real you playing. All I am saying is have a bit of humility and grace when it comes to handling new people coming in, and remember that you too were once new. Other than that, explore places, get to know people, Most of ALL, just have fun!

Why do you DJ? Ryann Chester: Djing isn’t a Job, but its an appreciation to the fact that one can express what the person is feeling at that very moment precisely with a Song, like a “Tune speaks a 1000 words”, every feeling or everything in this world has an Appropriate song to describe it, so guessing the Mood of the Crowd and hitting the Right spot that Makes the Crowd love you and You’re not only enjoying the music yourself but you’re Being Appreciated for it.

Ryann Chester: I Dj at Solana (The Best Nude beach on SL) between 12 PM-2 PM SLT, On Mondays and Saturdays, and That’s the only place where I Dj cos when I was new on SL that has been the Perfect Hangout to meet the people and Dj'ing there What style of Music? was always a Dream right from Ryann Chester: Personally, I my Noob days. had to pick one out of them then it would be the Halloween party this year when we had 60+ people on the Region and 53 People listening to me on the stream that’s the Best stats I’ve ever Achieved as an SL DJ. What are your favorite 3 songs? Ryann Chester: Now that’s a Good Question. Picking 3 songs will do injustice to the Other Genres as I Play everything based on the Event we have, but if I had to pick 3 songs they would be “Bad Company - Five Finger Death Punch” and “ Illusion – VNV Nation (DJ Rhyno mix)”and “Forever young – Alphaville”. 1st song I don’t have to say much about it, 2nd was the 1st Ever Mix By me, 3rd one is cos I’d wanna be young forever, cos this Experience of Youth would never come back and it would end up being a memory.

Is there Someone(s) you want to give a shout-out to? Ryann Chester: I’d Definitely wanna give a shout-out to all the Lovely Staff Members at Solana and Gator, for giving me an Opportunity to Show my Caliber, and yes to all my lovely listeners, for making My Journey on SL so Great, that I have no words to Explain but instead Dedicate a Song to them “Memory will never Die – by a Band called Default” Do you have any advice for SL noobs? Ryann Chester: Well Yes, The experience is based on SL on how you wanna be, or The place where you’re perception takes you, Take 1 Step at a time, Take it nice take it Slow and Try new things, well you have no one to answer to like in Real life, So Try them in SL and carry the Positive Experiences make'em your Strengths and Leave the Negative Experience as

Dj of the Month

This writer found DJ Rhyno to be a sweet Gentleman and very dynamic DJ. i attended a few of his SL shows and honestly loved the playlist and his interactions with the people there. He gives multiple shoutouts to all and promotes his hostess as well as the venue frequently. I especially enjoyed the Halloween Show that DJ Rhyno performed inside of a gorgeously decorated Castle in a Halloween motif. He played wonderful themed Halloween music - some oldies and some new as well as mixes that were perfect *treats* to the listeners & party people. He has a huge crowd following that almost crashed the sim and definitely worked his stream from which he handled with the grace & style of a professional deejay. I look forward to going to the upcoming Holiday parties and events that he will DJ at. He researches tirelessly for the perfect blend of music to meet each occasion. He is a true artist when he spins the music and sets the tone for what is a good time shared by all that come together. Please do check out DJ Rhyno at his shows/events for a festive, spirited and fun-filled time in SL.

Why do you DJ? His past reveals that... He was an alarm clock for his parents since 5 years old as he would get up at 4:30 am to put on music to wake his parents up. He would pick different songs to spin. It is in His nature to be an Entertainer because of the love he has for music in his soul and his life experiences. What style of Music? For Dirty, it is not so much style / genre of music but a music upbringing thru the years. He started with late 50s and 60s music... loving the b-bop music which his mom would dance to and he loved watching her enjoyment of good music. He got into Motown and from there to Funk - Funk - Funkkkkkk that transitioned into modern R&B that use to be called Soul Music.

This writer has in her short SL noob life come to know the Magnificent Doo Dirty as a true Entertainer and gifted DJ / Business Man and Friend. His wicked nasty but truthful sense of humor on and off the air waves is Raw and refreshing. Doo Dirty does not consider himself a "DJ" but an global Entertainer. He will make you laugh and your hips will get to moving even if only in your seat ... thus His coined "Pelvic Workout" for all the TGF Old School Divas and ladies tuned in on Sunday nights. Doo Dirty has been known to say on more than one live show that might be live broadcast from anywhere in the USA.... Do Not... repeating... Do Not *listen* to me, I want yall to **FEEL Me** during my shows. This writer hopes that everyone in SL will give themselves a chance to meet, hang out, party and enjoy the Magificient Doo Dirty. The Yuletide is undoubtedly primarily centered on children as this season celebrates the birth of the child savior to the Christian world. In this celebration of hope and blessings comes an opportune time to look at how Second Life has become a platform to provide a more meaningful and fulfilling existence to children suffering from autism. A psychologist at the University of Derby in the UK, Simon Bignell, is among those who have found SL’s virtual world as a potent tool in addressing autism that afflicts one of every one hundred ten children. In-world, Simon is known as Milton Broome who runs the island Derby University Psychology where projects aren’t only geared at training students but directly addresses the development of autistic kids as well. The Derby University Psychology sim features among other things an SL-Labs Teaching and

Learning space. This space comprises four “slabs” not only for University of Derby Psychology teaching but also offers a new space for rehearsing the social skills of those who suffer autism. “It is a community and a place to learn in a safe and potentially therapeutic environment,” Bignell a.k,a. avatar Milton, says. “Second Life provides an opportunity for collaboration and community, a space to make friends, share information, and to safely simulate social interactions of real life,” he elaborates. Texas U project echoes social interaction in a cyberworld scenario A similar project is being developed by a group at the University of Texas at Dallas. It is led by a cognitive neuroscientist, Sandra Bond Chapman, PhD, who is also chief director of the Center

for BrainHealth at the university. Under this project, a therapist guides patients enter a protected area in Second Life designed to help them practice communicating and negotiating in realistic settings. The area is secured so patients can't enter the main part of Second Life, which Chapman believes could be overly confusing and disorienting for them. As in the public areas of SL, both patient and therapist create avatars. The therapist's avatar— backed by a real therapist watching from a different room—enters the scene when the client needs help. With the promising results so far with people with Asperger's, Chapman says it's the first time she's really felt hopeful about helping her clients improve how they communicate and build relationships. So far, it looks like the virtual world of SL may be a great place to do that, she adds

solutions to this widespread affliction. Notably, there’s the property maintained in-world in the Porcupine region by Autistic Liberation Front on Second Life. This sim goes beyond promoting autism awareness and focus more on raising autistic rights awareness. For this purpose, it has a Museum and a Memorial, as well as meeting rooms for virtual conferences, meetings, and political discussions. Certainly, it is also noteworthy that the much lighter side of activities in-world, such as fashion, music, and even dating have also been successfully explored in the

many fundraising campaigns to support autism remedies and solutions. Last October, multi-awarded model Barney Helendale had a one-day extravaganza of a garage sale, clothing and date auctions, a fashion show, and a concert in support of the organization Autism Speaks. Another fundraiser for this organization was held via the Halloween Hunt for Autism, a grid-wide freebie gift hunt consisting of forty-eight stores wherein a 50L$ entry fee was required. It is for sure a humble amount, but it certainly contributes in no small measure to the gifts and blessings that provide not only joy at Yuletide but for all seasons.

During my time reviewing groups here in Second Life, I have pretty much limited myself to singersongwriter type performers. This was not due to a prejudice of any kind - I just have not had a lot of experience writing about groups who play to track. So I was kind of excited when fate conspired to change this for me. I had been chatting with a friend of mine who manages an act or two in SL and she had gone on and on about someone named LadyScarlett Farstrider. Now, people tell me about performers all of the time but this manager happens to be one whose taste I usually admire. And the first name LadyScarlett kinda sticks in the mind. So - a few weeks down the road - there I was minding my own business. In fact I was wandering through a shop that sells top of the line skins and shapes, at the very beginning of a mission

that I really didn’t feel like doing. But that’s another story for another day. *smile* As I wandered around, my eyes glazing over from all of the images of avatars that I would never look anything like, I walked past a lovely being whose name tag read LadyScarlett Farstrider. I tried to put on the brakes but ended up in one of those things where you just keep moving and you fly out the through the wall and into the next sim a few thousand meters. When I had finally popped back into “reality” I checked out her profile and sure enough it was the very singer I had been pointed toward. So we spoke - then we spoke another couple of times and I found her to be just the sweetest and nicest person. I promised to get out to see her sing. I guess I was at first a little surprised when I learned that she sang to track, but it was most-

ly a pleasant surprise. I not only LOVE her voice, but I learned that not all tracks make a singer sound like third-on-the-list at the Friday amateur karaoke scene. I popped out to see her perform a couple of times and then we spoke for a while in my office as I tried to get to know her personally. Here’s how it went: Traci Nubalo: So tell me, Lady, were you performing before Second Life? LadyScarlett Farstrider: Only occasionally - at karaoke bars with friends. TN: Where are you from? LF: Tennessee TN: Yes, I remember your lovely southern accent. I’ve been through Tennessee and it’s a very pretty state. What were your musical choices growing up?

LF: At first, oldies, like the Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis because that's what my dad listened to. Then country because that's what my mom listened to. TN: And later on? LF: Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Def Leppard... TN: How fun! So you were a rocker chick as a teen? LF: Yeah, pretty much. Rock and country. TN: May I ask your age? LF: 31 TN: Excellent. I really admire your interaction with your audience. That’s something that usually comes with professional maturity. With such little stage background how did you learn to do that? LF: Honestly, when I first started, the majority of the people

I had decided to take notes while I watched the performance, so to avoid having to chat with a lot of people I - well, I just sat hidden in the tree itself rather than landing on the dance floor. So I was really surprised when this sweet little voice appeared in my IM window. “Ummm, is everything okay? Would you like to join us?” I almost fell off the branch in surprise! Turns out it was Poi-

son Foxtrot, one of the grid’s best and sweetest club hosts. We chatted briefly; she gushed about how huge a fan of Lady’s she has become; and I thanked her for checking on my wellbeing. It really was a lovely little scene - one very much in keeping with the super-good vibes I saw in all of the Farstrider shows I attended. Back in my office, LadyScarlett was taking me to school. I recreate this fascinating part of the interview for the reader who - like me - had no clue where things like backing tracks come from. TN: Lady, how do you select your material? LF: If it's a song I love, like one I can't get out of my head, I try to find the music for it, then play around with it for a while to see if I can actually do it. Then I force my friend, Nanners Guardian, to listen to it and tell me if its okay or not.

Club rworld Sound In spite of the “Underworld” name, Club Underworld Sound has a futuristic, almost sci-fi feel to it. You are surrounded by the night sky. Stars and space are all around you. Dark blue, magenta, and purple give it a cool feel and the tip jars are cosmic looking orbs of light. There are built in fish tanks throughout this large place. Downstairs are the stages, poles, a big bar area, and ad boards. Upstairs, will be a VIP lounge with hot tub room, lap dance area with tinted windows, and TPs for the escorts to take clients for more “in depth” services. Eventually, they hope to have themed escort areas too.

74

There is also a game room for hanging out with greedy, poker tables, playable pool, darts, and possibly chess, checkers, or mahjong. Of course there are live DJs spinning all sorts of music, strippers, escorts, singles, and couples dances, contests, and a sploder. Rock is typically played but they will take all requests and certainly do not limit themselves to that. There are four owners: Raidon Bergan, Erin Fray, Truebliss Artful, and Malik Demonista – all owners of previous night clubs. They officially opened on October 26, but as often happens in SL, recently needed to move to a new location so things are just now starting to happen. Currently, Club Underworld Sound has events every night from 7-9pm SL time and a DJ doing parties 1-4pm for the European crowd. Whipeout And now, for something a little different…. I chose to write about club Whipeout and Mall because I happened to TP there while exploring and just thought it was such a cool looking place. It’s a grungy, urban waterfront with some Sci Fi accents, giving it a futuristic feel. As soon as you arrive, a “stalking drone” is flying over your head and shining a light on you. As you look around, you see giant blue crystals, blue plasma tubes, an “aura” tree, pylons, giant hybrid pods, and rocket type contraptions. Says co-owner, Destany Magic, “lol... I’m weird sometimes. I like to blow things out of proportion... I made them a lil bigger than they should be... It’s fun to space things

up... change some things just to have people see something new.” The atmosphere blends perfectly with the House/Trance/Techno/ Dance music played in the club. Owners, Destany Magic and Blue Twine, recently re-designed the whole sim and have now opened it up for store rentals again. The club has only been around about a month now, but the sim is three years old. It was renamed in November. Destany and Blue had a strip club earlier on this sim, named “Cats”, for about 2 1/2 years. At the end of this summer, their friend, Christel Morane, also an owner of successful clubsin the past, asked them to start this place with her. So the three started Whipeout as a dancezone only club. Destany Magic: No contests, no strippers. Only kick ass music by great DJs and a place for people to hang, meet friends and have fun... Contests we didn’t want to run because

simply they lure contest campers in to the club that really aren’t interested in anything else than to win some lindens. Now we know that people coming to us are there for the music and the fun.” This is of course, what all club owners want, but not easy to achieve. So, I asked how they would get people in. Destany Magic: “Well, mostly we get people in by 3 sources right now: first one is the old VIP group from the previous club, the other is of course by friends and friends of friends etc.. rumor goes fast and the third are some ads in the event groups.” There is also Zingo, Texas Hold’Em, and a very nice mall with quality shops like “Delirium Style”. Sim-wide

hunts will be held in the coming months to bring in new faces as well. What is Destany most proud of?: “we are known to be friendly... I mean very friendly lol... everyone is welcome and we do take time for people. Ignorance doesn’t exist here. Everyone gets the same attention - club visitors, renters, shoppers, or just people coming to look around.” With the new design, there are still some shops open and they are still hiring staff. Whipeout is currently looking for quality, original designers that will fit in well with their edgy sim. Freebie resellers and such will be politely refunded and asked to go.

‘I could have danced all night,’ sang “Eliza Doolittle in ‘My Fair Lady.’ “And still come back for more.” If she was in Second Life, chances are she did. Because dance in cyber world is like a handshake is in the real one. It’s how avatars meet, talk, make friends, fall in love, break up, and conduct business - virtually everything in a virtual world. Who has not effortlessly swayed to music streams in pixel ballrooms, never missing a step in perfect rhythm? And where else can an American man waltz with a Romanian woman on a Tuesday morning? Both have not or ever will meet in RL. But both take the cyber dance floorlike Astaire and Rogers. ‘We could have ‘danced all night’ indeed and we do, thanks to amazing pose creations from great designers like artoo Magneto. two left feet into cyber candidates for ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ Artoo’s love is twofold: animation and Second Life. He first combined the two in 2006, bringing out-world expertise to an in-world new job. “I was asked to build a SL island for Mercedes Benz,” artoo recalled about his first gig. It also explains the hot sleek virtual Mercedes sitting in his SL living room (animators have perks). But when the automaker project was done, artoo wasn’t. “I was still fascinated with Second Life,” he said. “I learned to build things I could not find,” simple items at first – hats, shoes, furniture, plants, etc. Animation was clearly his love. “It was and is so much fun.” Take fun, stir in creativity, and behold Akeyo, artoo’s dance creation company, giving avatars pep in their step since 2007. Doing a jig may be spontaneous; making one is far from it. As artoo says,”It starts with passion.”

“My motivation comes from the challenge to create something I like.” And the best way to create a Second Life dance is watching people do a real life one. “Mainly, I look for what I like, “He noted, explaining the happy feet process from conception to’ cutting’ the rug.’ His ideas come from attending RL parties, watching people, making notes as they groove on the dance floor. “I meet with people and describe what I need,” the designer noted. He consults with professional dance instructors and dancers, as well as ordinary peoplewho happen to dance well. “I don’t want my creations looking too professional,” he said, opting instead for motions and movements of ordinary people (i.e. avatars). From observations and consultations, a dance move is selected. Dancers are hired. “They range from professionals to people who just dance cool,” Artoo said. “We

meet in a Motion Studio.” And the magic happens. His dancers do their thing: High stepping, gyrating, and boogieing to the beat. Every move is recorded. Forty-eight cameras capture dancer movement from every angle. Data is fed into computers “This can take some time,” he noted. “Sometimes it can go very quickly, say an hour. Other times I work several days on a single dance.” But when computers move the dance to 3D is when it comes to life. And after doing this for three years plus, artoo is still thrilled, “Even a technical person like me is amazed when I think of what the computer is actually doing to give a dance life. It is stunning.” It takes almost as many electronic calculations to teach avatars to tango as it does to fly the space shuttle. To date, artoo and company have produced about 60 pos-

es. Since the 2007 startup, Akeyo has seen many changes with more coming. “We will see more creative work in animation,” he predicts. “Dancing will be more like ‘Alice in Wonderland’ kind of stuff. Avatars will dance in ways that cannot be done real world.” This is after all Second Life. If you can do the ‘Twist’ on a dance floor, why not do it on a dance floor on another planet? “We already see hovering furniture, and other SL innovations not available in RL,” the dance creator said. “Those type applications will be more available in world.” Soon we will dance without the annoying confines of RL’s pesky gravity. If it feels like you’re dancing on cloud 9, you probably are. Yes Eliza, you can dance all night. Just select that little pink pose ball.

ping or do our RL banking in a virtual world. Not so much of that has happened but there have been a lot of other changes in the time I've played. HB Magazine: What I would like to know is more about your early days in SL. What they were like. Kess Crystal: Confusing... I didn't really know where to start. We didn't have the same level of help and tutorials you have now and I was a bit lost and bewildered to start with. I found a casino (legal in those days) and camped in the bar area as a barperson for weeks, making friends with other campers and people coming to play gaming machines. I camped until I had enough money to buy my first outfit from Tres Beau. I had expensive tastes even then, lol. It took flipping ages! HB Magazine: So, you met a lot of others and saved your Linden's, but when did you

start to take the steps to being where you are today? Kess Crystal: While I was camping at the casino, a guy came in and asked me about the camping system, he explained he was opening a club and wanted one for there. I helped him as much as I could, and at the end of the conversation, he asked me to apply for the Manager’s job at his club. I had no experience at all but I applied, along with three others, and I got the job! The club was called X on the Waterfront, a small, intimate, deep house music club. I loved it! I had totalk carte blanche to do as I wished. I learnt a lot in a short space of time, and a few months later when he had to leave SL for personal reasons, I bought the club from him. And there in started my career in club management... and eventually DJ'ing. HB Magazine: Were there many pitfalls that you had to overcome in those early days of club ownership?

Profile Kess Crystal: Yes! I was totally clueless on how SL worked, things I take for granted now like how to set group permissions, how to eject someone, how to build, how to texture, I had to learn everything practical. I had great friends, some of which were very talented who helped me a lot. I managed people in RL, so the people management I found the easiest... yet still the most frustrating sometimes. I took people letting me down too personally, something four years on that I still suffer from to be honest. HB Magazine: Had you ever envisaged that you would have become a DJ, as well as a club owner?

HB Magazine: I have heard that “'Kadie”' has quite the reputation in gay club scene as being one hell of a DJ how do you feel when you hear accolades like that?

Heart & Sole by Keekee Dezno Photos by Kala Balut

Shopping

Heart & Sole is a wonderful shoe store I have only discovered in the last few months, although Bijoux Lefavre has been in business a little over 2 years now. I have tried other shoe stores and have some I like but usually I am not big on prim feet shoes. However Heart & Sole is thebest shoe store I have found in my 2 plus years in SL. The main store is on Bijoux's own sim with a nice family of other quality stores housed around her. She also has about 10 satellite stores that feature selected styles but keeps the main store where she has her entire line available. I asked Bijoux how she got her start designing shoes, "I'm

very passionate about shoes! You should see my RL closet! In SL I wasn't finding the quality of footwear I wanted, and that challenged me to create my own styles" she replied. She designs shoes she would like to wear. She also looks at RL shoes and translates some of those ideas into what will work in her SL shoes, while having a lot of fun giving each style her own fingerprint. She keeps up with the latest styles and trends by spending time in RL shoe stores, holding and examining the shoes to get a feel for how she can bring their best features to our virtual world.

She enjoys designing for every taste and as she says "SL has every taste imaginable". She finds playing to such a wide audience a wonderful creative challenge. She wants her footwear to compliment every look: classic elegance, sexy, edgy, sophisticated, dark gothic or casual playfulness. Her vision for Heart & Sole has always been to put quality and design ahead of profit. She says "As an artist, I take the greatest satisfaction in being out and about and seeing someone looking great in my shoes. Especially with SL's economy reflecting RL's tighter budgets, I'm still determined to keep my prices within realistic reach. SL fashion is a wonderful means of self-expression, but if a customer had to save up to buy just one pair of my shoes and try to make it work with everything, they wouldn't have as much creativity of choice".

Her designs have a hud that allows you to change the shoes colors, gems colors, feet color and more. So her shoes can be a lot more versatile than most. Most of her styles range from only $300L to $500L. She has the bargain lovers dream in her LAST CALL WALL, where soon-to-be retired styles are only $100L. She also has a drawing for her group members for a $1000 gift card, and how is this for giving back, she has 3 winners every week for the $1000 card. Now that's a nice present for yourself, or you can buy gift cards for someone as a present. As if her shoes do not keep her busy enough, she has just let me in on a little secret. She is about to launch her own clothing line. It's name is Heart & Stitches....how appropriate, and will make it's debut in the main store in the very near future. Wow, now we can look forward to fun fashions that will coordinate and look great

with our favorite Heart & Sole footwear. I for one, can not wait. This is a very talented woman and she has an incredible heart; maybe that is where the name comes from. According to Bijoux, "Second Life is such an amazing venue for interacting with people all over the world, and owning Heart & Sole has given me a unique opportunity to meet other designers, exchange ideas, and get to know people I'd have never had a chance to meet in RL. Some of the most enjoyable SL projects I've done have been collaborations with clothing and hair designers. I'm also very dedicated to Relay for Life, and it's exciting how the SL community provides so many ways to support this very important cause. I've made lifelong friends here, and whatever else I take away from Heart & Sole, the people I've met will always be the biggest reward of

all." And according to this writer, meeting Bijoux has been one of the biggest rewards I have had. She is a lovely lady and writing her story has been a thrill. And as you know I am also the writer for the "Living With Cancer" column and have a husband who is currently battling cancer so for Bijoux to be so active with the Relay for Life only shows where her HEART & SOLE truly are. So now ladies let me say... LET'S SHOP!!!!

Lili's Couture Collection by Keekee Dezno Photos by Kala Balut

A unique and interesting place to shop is Lili's Couture Collection, owned by Lili Halostar. Lili's has been in business for about 11 months now and has the most beautiful designs for the most incredible prices. In only 11 months she has already opened an amazing 8 stores. When I asked Lili what got her to start designing her own clothing line she says "I simply wanted a nice gown to wear, something with nice textures". Seems simple doesn't it. She describes how after being in SL for a year she wanted to give back to what has given her so much fun. She already enjoyed photography and playing the piano and singing. So, with a little encouragement from her friends she started designing. "Plus, I so love a fantastic outfit" she replies. Since that fateful day she decided to start her own designs she has grown to a classic and sexy clothing line that you must see.

111

112

She designs many different styles of clothing, from casual clubbing outfits to high end couture ball gowns. Her new releases go to the Midnight Mania Board for her group for anywhere from 1 to 3 days. Then she moves them to the "Mobvendor" boards for $99L for a few days. After that she moves them to a full price board. The average cost for her outfit is around $300L however, some gowns can go up t $600L. She also has weekly specials for $20L in her main store. If it is your Rez Day, she will give you a free gown. Just drop her a note card telling her it is your Rez Day and she will send you a free gown. One of her favorite gifts to give is when she sees someone out in world wearing a Lili's Couture Gown she will "pay it forward" and give you a new design dress for free. She is someone who enjoys giving back and making people happy.

Lili understand that as women our gowns represent more than just a dress, they are the ultimate expression of who we are in SL. As a fairly new designer she tries to bring gowns that flow well with our avatar and have nice textures all the while keeping the designs classic and sexy. When I asked Lili about her inspirations for her designs, she said "believe it or not, they were encouraged by one man in SL. Behind every great woman is our guy". Each design is for your selection, many styles are based on a wide range with different clients in mind. She will also do custom work, limited edition... one of a kind. If you have a picture from RL she will do her best to recreate the gown you have in mind. At her main store you can choose from a wide arrangement of some chic accessories. She loves being a "Fashionista". So see for yourself what Lili has to offer. And as always "LET'S SHOP...

Pregnancy by ChloeRed Mornington Photos by Candice Jun

There is nothing more annoying than tummy talker spam, followed by “awwww”, and “Isn’t that cute they are gonna have a baby” is what I always thought. If my Second Life mother heard me say that shewould have my head for sure! Her name is Robinnurse Rowlands and she happens to be the owner of Rock A Bye Babies maternity clinic. I know that i’m not the only one that thought a fake pregnancy was kinda lame. None of my Second Life friends are into it but that doesn’t mean that for a lot of people on the grid it isn’t a very vital part of their Second Life. I asked Robin “What’s the point to your clinic?” and her answer really touched me, she said “ I wanted to give people the opportunity to experience the perfect pregnancy." She remembered a point in time when she was pregnant in real life with one of her two children. A point where she was looked at different-

ly, looked down upon and treated indifferent. Almost as if she had come down with some disease. She explained that the medical staff were unkind, cold and acted so routine that her whole experience from the medical staff was quite dreadful. Robin is a medical professional of 23 years, a wonderful nurse and takes pride in her job. As I took a tour of her clinic it's nothing like I have ever seen before. The landscape is so lush and rich, when you walk through the doors it just feels like home. The staff is welcoming and everyone is so quick and eager to help and assist you. I decided to chat with one of the doctors on staff to get their point of view on Second Life pregnancy. I asked Dr. Whitley Beresford, " What is your point of view on pregnancy in Second Life?" she answered "Second Life pregnancy is not something that you jump into here like in real

life. None the less, people need to understand that pregnancy in Second Life is real and it requires maturity. For people that cannot experience pregnancy in real life a Second Life pregnancy is very important and means a lot to that person. It gives them that oppor-

tunity and with clinics like Rock A Bye Babies we make it possible to fill that missing void in those people's lives." It's just amazing to me how this clinic is a replica of something seen in real life. The machines are exact with incubatorsand wa-

ter birthing tubs to blood pressure machines and oxygen tanks. Lamaze classes are available each week for family and friends to experience together and once the mother has had her baby there are recovery rooms attached to the delivery rooms. All the staff at this clinic are real life medical professionals so the terms they use during exams and delivery are all correct. A real life experience in Second Life for people that desire to have children together, something they may never have the opportunity to do at last that time is here. Your dream pregnancy without pain or fetal distress, Robin explains " Real life sucks enough, why experience anything less than perfect in a world where you have control over everything that happens. We don't even provide Csections except for male pregnancies." Yes, a man can have a baby here in Second Life, I was cross myself when Robin mentioned it

and of course I dug a little deeper and asked her about males having babies. But, why not make it possible, nothing is impossible in Second Life! While I was touring the clinic I had the opportunity to talk with one of the patients. I asked her if she had children in real life and she does. Not only people who can't have children experience Second Life pregnancy so I wanted to know how does it compare to real life and the patient said " Here in Second Life you are treated like a queen. Everyone is friendly, understanding and always available to answer all of your questions. So far I have had nothing but an amazing experience." Looking around I thought to myself that they must be doing something right in this home away from home. The sim was packed with inquiring persons to patients waiting on their weekly exam. fect pregnancy would not be to be pregnant for nine straight months. They offer pregnancies of four, six and eight weeks so exams have to be weekly to get the full experience with blood work, sonograms and talks of future birth control, condom use and prenatal care. In conclusion, spending time at Rock A Bye Babies definitely made me think again and totally changed my opinion of Second Life pregnancy. Real life professionals in Second Life making dreams come true for people who want to know what it is like to bring life into creation. The doctors and nurses of Rock A Bye Babies have made this possible for people without pain, death, struggle. I agree real life sucks enough, everyone needs a slice of perfection especially in the role of giving life and at Rock A Bye Babies life is given abundantly.

Living with Cancer

ane First I would like to say this is one persons story and not necessarily my opinion or that of the magazine. However, we are all welcome to our opinion and the freedom to express it. That is why I felt I should do the story even though many may not agree. And when dealing with cancer there are always stories that do not have the happy ending and leave loved ones feeling hurt and bitter. So although this is not the usual story it is the true to life story.

139

140

My only sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 45, she was horrified. She had a complete mastectomy, with a radical on the left side. The Oncologist was talking doing chemotherapy and radiation after the surgery. Not too long after her surgery a *Shaman friend of mine sent me herbs to mix for her to drink, it was safe for me to even drink. This concoction put her into remission for almost a year, she said nothing to the medical professionals because we felt they would be against holistic healing. During this process my Shaman friend passed away suddenly and I never got the full names of the herbs he sent me. My sister fought for 7 years through grueling procedures of chemotherapy. The chemo was depleting her as much, if not more, than the actual cancer. She was left weak from the chemo, her blood sugars out of control so badly they either read simply HIGH

or LOW. She fought with **Lymphedema from not being treated correctly after the surgery. She had 4 brain aneurysms, however we are not sure if they were related to the cancer or not. The doctors used her as a human guinea pig for several things which also caused over dosing of medications in error. This caused even more complications to her already complicated life. During these years I looked after her on and off, so I began some researching. This is what i found out: There has been a cure for cancer since 1922! Yes that is correct... 1922!. Our governments would not and will not allow it out. If you think this is false you are sadly mistaken. She was my only sister and she deserved to live, not die at the very young age of 52. If you want to check this out for yourself, go to your library and see if they have a book called "The Essiac Report" they are not likely

to have it as it too was not allowed for quite a while ... it has all the information...has years of tests results, names of hospitals and doctors that still remain and exist today, although some of the doctors may have since passed. This infuriated me and disgusted me. I have since come to the knowledge that there will never be a "FULL" cure for cancer. Why you ask? It is simple, there is simply no money in a cure! Our governments are way too money hungry to allow this to end, but you can rest assured that anyone who is high up in the government and gets cancer will get the best of care and treatment to ease their pain and help to cure their disease . This is NOT a story...this is a real life situation that i tried to fight with my Sister (God rest her soul) for 7 years with not much help from the medical professionals except to continue to put her through hell with all their radi-

ation and chemotherapy to the point where she simply said..."I would rather be dead then so sick from all they are pumping into me!" And with that she refused any further treatment and sadly passed away July 20th 2003 leaving her only child, a 15 year old son Motherless. You likely will not use any of this story and that's ok...but cancer touched my life, my families lives and made it a living hell. In the long run it was too much to bare for my parents, it spun everyone way out of control, the stress caused my mothers stroke which caused her eventual passing, my fathers down slide of poor health and state of mind and my nerves to go to hell. It is now onlymy ailing father and i, but i am a stronger and better person. I refuse to give anything, not one red cent to any kind of "cure cancer" foundation because if the governments would stop

being greedy there would be NO MORE CANCER. But alas, they have stuck by their lies for so long now that it would put thousands of people out of work, heaven forbid they take responsibility for anything they do wrong. Am I bitter? You bet! But with all i have found out... I have a right to be. Thank you for reading my story. JessieDane Ember

*Shamanism encompasses the belief that shamans are intermediaries or messengers between the human world and the spirit worlds. Shamans are said to treat ailments/illness by mending the soul. **Lymphedema, also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. I searched for the book "The Essiac Report" and did find it's existence. The Essiac Report: The True Story of a Canadian Herbal Cancer Remedy and of the Thousands of Lives It Continues to Save As always if you have a story to tell about Cancer please write it on a note card and send it to me.
