HBNradio was founded in 1952 by Hon. Alderman Mrs Freda Cocks OBE as the Birmingham Hospital Commentaries Association (BHCA).

BHBN became the BHBA in 1955 and BHBN in 1972. Its recent broadcast name of BHBN HOSPITAL RADIO was adopted in 2006 and changed to BHBNradio in 2020. Nationally, hospital radio first started life in York in 1926. The Network was a pioneer in many aspects of its broadcasting: time spent in hospital back in the Network’s early days was very different to the present, where day case surgery is common. During the 50s & 60s, a two-week stay in hospital was more the average for even a routine procedure. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5...

Hello and welcome to the first edition of BHBNradioNEWS. This magazine marks an incredibly special milestone for BHBNradio - 70 Years of Hospital Radio in Birmingham. In this months edition you’ll be able to read BHBNradio’s story on page 5 and see how BHBN began. The importance of hospital radio become ever apparent in 2020 in providing a service to patients during Covid, when no visitors were allowed on the wards. On Page 4

It still only feels like yesterday when I first started volunteering at BHBN Hospital Radio and at the time of writing this I am now into my 39th Year. For those of you who think we just come in, sit down and play songs well it’s not that simple. Most of our members have full time jobs so we do our radio programmes around that. We research, plan and search out the music needed. Our request presenters also go around the wards to meet the patients and then come to the studio to plan on what tunes go where in the running order. Over a week a one-hour show can take anything up to five hours of their time to organise. Thank you for taking the time to read our magazine, I do hope you find it interesting and would welcome any feedback or suggestions on future editions. My parents used to ballroom dance to this it was mum’s favourite, and 2. mum would phone me and sing the refrain. As a youngster I would cringe, but now it means a lot. Perfect Day - Lou Reed. This was playing on the radio as my family took the road home late summer 1997. We had visited Warwick Castle, had a meal at Pizza express and had been to see Men in Black which was a new film in the cinema at the time. How did I hear about BHBN? My very good pal Lily Grace James started working with BHBN in 2019. I came along to the studio with her a couple of times and absolutely loved it. I

Tell us about your show...: I present the Tuesday Morning show. I’m always trying to bring new music each show and I only play a song two weeks in a row if it is a real tune (refer to next questions for some of the serial offenders!!). I love getting requests from the listeners and try to include something for everyone. You will often catch me talking about my dog at any given opportunity between songs and items. What would your 3 desert island discs be? This probably changes every year! The one that never changes is ‘The Whole of the Moon’ by The Waterboys. It never fails to give me goose bumps and my heart does an internal punch in the air like at the end of The Breakfast Club as soon as I hear that hook. That song can ONLY be played slightly too loud and in a space where I can sing along (my car

tartan scarfs around our necks and wrists which marked us out as Bay City Rollers fans. We ate sweets, rode the fair and laughed until we made ourselves ill. What book are you reading at the moment? Upstairs at the White House by J B West It’s a memoir by Mr West who served as Chief Usher at the White House for many years and has a unique insight into the lives of the first family of the US. I by far prefer non-fiction, particularly biography/autobiography/modern political history. What’s the best thing about BHBN? A commitment to offering the best possible quality of service to listeners. Your best moment at BHBN? Doing my first request – I was so excited!! Pushing the buttons, moving the sliders and speaking at the right time going into the news – getting it right is a real conundrum. And finally, your most embarrassing moment at BHBN? I think I have a few ahead of me!

Interacting with the BHBN community, it’s great to hear from the patients and care home residents, I love finding out peoples’ favourite songs. Your best moment at BHBN? Co-hosting the Christmas show with Lily, we’ve been friends since school so it was so lovely to get on the radio waves together!

My show is an hour of distraction each week for those in hospital and around the community. I like to include a ‘person of the week’ each week to showcase a patient’s story or a member of the public who has gone out of their way to do something special for someone else. I also play a feel good tune to kick start the show and really research into my music each week to appeal to the wide demographic we cover. What would your 3 desert island discs be? Hmm that is a tricky one. I am someone who needs music to uplift me and make me feel motivated so I would choose: A Ministry of Sound disc, Nirvana and Sam Fender What book are you reading at the moment? I sound very uneducated and boring but I’m not reading anything currently! I don’t have the time but do love a good book on holiday by the poolside.

What’s the best thing about BHBN? The best thing about BHBN is the difference the station can make to the listeners. A lot of the listeners are in hospitals and care homes and if we can be that station that provides a bit of distraction from whatever they are going through I think that is amazing. It’s always lovely to hear staff say their wards love listening to the show. BHBN is all about the community as well and has a great community spirit. I absolutely love being part of the team and I am very grateful for the platform they have given me to have my own show. Your best moment at BHBN? My best moment would have to be airing an interview on a lovely man called Declan who had sadly lost his baby and opened up to me on the loss of his son and the impact that it had on his mental health. This was such a rewarding interview to be able to record and so brave of Declan to speak so honestly and raw about his emotions. It was great to hear his interview had inspired other dad’s to speak up about how they were feeling. And finally, your most embarrassing moment at BHBN? My most embarrassing moment at BHBN has to be when I couldn’t pronounce an artist’s name and was playing interviews on YouTube until I could find how to say it in a very TIGHT timeframe.

This gave the then stations volunteers the opportunity to foster long-term relationships with patients. The first studio was at the rear of the New Inns Public house on the Moseley Road, providing live football commentaries of local teams to patients in Yardley Green Sanatorium, and as the service successfully expanded, it moved home quite a few times before finally settling at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, in Edgbaston, from 1966. We still serve the Heartlands Hospital to this day, as it is now part of the Heart of England Foundation NHS Trust. It was at Edgbaston that the Network really found its place within the Birmingham hospital community, and where it became a familiar sound around the wards – popular with patients, staff and relatives. The Network was first formally registered as a Charity in 1962, and was incorporated as a Limited Company in 1981 and now converted to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2022 with mant advantages such as, assisting an organisation with fundraising / donations and providing the public with confidence that the charity is appropriately regulated. After a long and happy period at Edgbaston, in 1988 Warwickshire County Cricket Club decided to authorise redevelopment at the County Ground. So the Network relocated once more in 1989 to studios based at the City Hospital, on Dudley Road, with an impressive studio complex. This enabled us, in another historic first, to become the first UK hospital radio station to introduce continuous 24 hours a day broadcasting in September 1994. We remain at the forefront of UK and European hospital radio with a number of awards to our credit, including the inaugural Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards National Winner in 1990. These awards are judged by a range of radio industry professionals and healthcare staff. A new chapter in the history of the Network got underway in July 2012, when the new BHBN studios opened for business. Bill Waldron became the first presenter to broadcast live from these studios on the site of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham: A state of the art, multimedia broadcasting centre at the site of Birmingham’s first new acute hospital for 70 years. After more than sixty years, the Network continues to broadcast a wide range of programmes that include interviews, local news items, sport, and – of course – the backbone to any hospital radio station’s output, patients’

musical requests. When asked to reflect on the history of the Network, Freda Cocks remarked that what pleased her most is that the enthusiasm with which the Network began has never faded.Hospital Radio’s national body, the Hospital Broadcasting Association, have openly acknowledged the quality of our work and presented us with a commemorative 60 year award in 2021 to mark this historic achievement. In September 2015 the Network was awarded The Fourteenth Patricia M. Purchase Award by the Birmingham Society, in recognition of its long standing work in the community, broadcasting to NHS hospitals across Birmingham. It was proudly presented to BHBN during the Society’s 21st Convocation at Birmingham Council House on 21st September 2015. The Network has undoubtedly gone from strength to strength and, although run entirely by volunteers, is still acknowledged as providing as professional service as any radio station in the West Midlands County.

During its long history BHBN has developed numerous media and broadcast personalities, including “Voice of the Balls” Alan Dedicoat, local radio presenters Phil Upton, Jennie Wilkes, Tom Ross, Paul Franks, Andrew Peach now a newsreader on Radio 2 and 4 and many other broadcasting professionals, including our most recent success with Miranda Burns, who now works for Capital FM. As well as our success nationally, the tireless work of our volunteers has also been recognised a little closer to home too. We won the bronze award at the Building Healthier Lives Awards, run by the UHB NHS Trust, in the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year category. In 2019 BHBN won GOLD for Hospital Radio, Station of the Year and in 2020 won joint Silver for Station of the Year at the Hospital Radio Awards, along with GOLD for Best Speech for the Baton Handover at the British Transplant Games held in Birmingham and Silver for Best Female Presenter for Philippa Clarkin. And to continue on our winning streak, we are proud to announce we have a host of nominations at the HBA National Hospital Radio Award 2022, the winners will be announced later in the year, so keep your eyes peeled on our social media and wish us luck!

Hospital Radio is an organisation dependant on its volunteers, volunteers of whom have a passion for radio broadcasting and a knowledge of music. How does it work? Well BHBNradio receives an annual grant from the NHS, this goes towards the broadband lines and the studio equipment and resources to serve the hospitals. BHBNradio also depend on their sponsors as well as donations, and we as a team like to get involved with the community by getting involved in a variety of charity events too.

10am Alarm set at 5.24am. Slowly wake up, get dressed and eat breakfast.
