t’s not only Her Majesty the Queen marking a 70-year Jubilee in 2022. BHBNradio is also marking its 70th anniversary of broadcasting by asking the community for audio contributions and stories about the hospitals it serves.

To mark its 70th Year, BHBNradio is embarking on its biggest ever quest to commemorate the legacy of the Second City’s hospitals and their importance in the community across the West Midlands. We are asking patients, hospital staff and the general public to help us construct an oral history of the six hospitals BHBNradio reaches! CONTINUED ON PAGE 9...

truth is that even before COVID restrictions were put in place, 40% of hospital inpatients did not receive any visitors. Nobody likes hospitals but these dedicated volunteers are desperate to get back onto the wards and provide comfort to people who are bored, in pain, or alone.

By Amy Palmer

The relevance of hospital radio When I say I work supporting hospital radio I generally get one response - ‘does that still exist’? And yes, it very much does. What’s more, it is very much needed. If COVID has taught us nothing else it has taught us the value of being connected to each other, and how hard this can be for people who do not have digital skills. The sad

Home From Hospital Care staff and volunteers can support you as you make the transition from hospital to home, our support is free for once a week up to six weeks. Some of the things we can do for you are:

• Arrange a handyman to do a small job

• Provide food parcels on discharge from hospital

• Check you are receiving the correct amount of benefits, provide advice and support to guide you through the benefits process

• Visit you once a week for six weeks for a friendly chat • Shop for you or accompany you to the shops or supermarket

• Maximise your support needs if required, by signposting you to other relevant support services • Provide general advice and information

Research shows that happier patients get well faster, which makes the music and companionship of hospital radio not only good news for patients but also for the NHS budget and waiting lists. A hospital radio volunteer isn’t just a voice on the radio playing your favourite songs but a much needed befriender. They chat to patients, show them how to use entertainment equipment, and how to log in to the Wifi. When hospital visiting was totally suspended it was hospital radio that stepped in to provide a link between patients and their loved ones, sending messages of hope and song dedications back and forth. As a millenial glued to my devices I was pleasantly surprised to hear the stories of patients who will pull up songs on their phones to request because they don’t just want to hear their music but to share it. They want to be able to tell the story behind their chosen track so it becomes more than a song - it becomes an interaction. We’re not just relevant within the hospital walls either. Like the NHS, hospital radio stations are extending further into the community for prevention and wellbeing purposes. As healthcare systems get more complex, navigating which service to use - or even whether to be approaching the NHS or community run services - requires more awareness and health literacy than ever. If you have time to spare both HBA and its member stations have a wide array of volunteering roles available, please visit hbauk.com to find out more. Andy encouraged and inspired her to work on recording her own original music. She took his advice, and her new career as an independent musician was born. Her song “Faces” won the Finalists award in the World Songwriting Competition with her co-writer Bob Emerson “Saturday Morning” released in the Spring of 2020 created with musician songwriter Alan Garmonsway also won another World Songwriting Finalists award heralding a promising start for Lilijan Rose in 2020. Now Lilijan is getting radio attention, having been featured recently on the popular UK independent music program “BBC Introducing” in the West Midlands and her songs have also been broadcast on Birmingham Hospital Radio network (BHBNradio) with some live performance for the patients planned once Covid restrictions allow.

NONOGRAM

ARTIST BIO Lilijan Rose Lilijan Rose is a singer and songwriter from the town of Solihull in the West Midlands UK. She started singing just over three years ago. On a whim she followed an advertisement for singing lessons at her son’s music school. That impulse ultimately led her life down a new musical path with rapid recognition for her talent. Lilijan is also a student of The Vocal Zone Voice Studio which also trains well known TV personalities in stage and drama. Her new vocation led Lilijan to a friendship with the former Duran Duran guitarist, singer and songwriter (“Girls on Film,” “Rio”), Andy Wickett.

Cheers to Colin’s 40 Years! Written by Kira Hughes he loves whilst playing music he adores. Colin looks forward to more achievements in the future at BHBNradio also sharing he sincerely hopes to see the professional levels continue with more live output throughout the days. Colin’s dedication has definitely inspired us here at BHBNradio. We truly thank you for all the hard work and support you’ve given the station and its members over the decades. Congratulations! A big cheers to your 40 years.

Colin Monnaf Programme Controller BHBNradio are appreciating Colin Monnaf being on the airwaves for 40 years, as presenter, producer and programme controller! Over half of BHBNradio’s life time. Acknowledging this milestone, Colin and I have taken a trip down memory lane giving us an insight to what has kept Colin so passionately devoted for 40 years. Presenting a range of shows such as Country, Chart and request shows, in fact Colin has done most shows except sports. Joking that he is “a fully paid member of the non sports club”. BHBN Gold is Colin’s current on going show hitting 32 years, this being his greatest achievement at BHBNradio, expressing

“I absolutely love preparing and presenting and now with the audience participation, thanks to social media”. Colin reaches out each week building up to his show on Saturday mornings collecting requests then sharing his appreciation for the listeners involvement while playing their favourite tracks between 9 – 11am. This makes Colin’s listeners feel even more connected. BHBN GOLD is a mix of 50’s – 80’s music but I was intrigued to find out what Colin’s favourite decade is to play from. Admitting it’s a tough choice he says as he really does enjoy music from each decade but settles with late 60s, early 70s. Saying “they have the best songs although anything from 1968 is alright by me”. As well I wondered what is Colin’s number 1 favourite artist, to which he responded with that there are far too many artists to choose from because he likes so many genres. But he did enlighten us with “I am a big fan of Rock, Pop, Reggae and Big Band”. I also asked, if any other presenters influenced Colin’s own presenting skills? He proudly names a few of his inspirations; Tony Blackburn, Les Ross and Brendan Kearney. Colin’s favourite part of BHBNradio is to be within a team, a family and of course presenting shows Why not FOLLOW US on Twitter? - twitter.com/BHBNradio
