HORMAZD NARIELWALLA This catalogue features a selection of new works by Hormazd Narielwalla. Born in Pune in India in 1979, Hormazd Narielwalla’s career as an artist began after his studies in fashion and textile design led him to a residency in the atelier of Dege & Skinner, London’s oldest tailoring firm on Saville Row. His fascination with tailoring patterns began during this period and led to the publication of two books, Dead Man’s Patterns and The Savile Row Cutter, a biography of Master Tailor, Michael Skinner. Narielwalla works in mixed media and collage using found materials; vintage sewing patterns, bespoke Savile Row tailoring patterns and hand-made papers sourced from around the world. The patterns themselves range from rare, vintage patterns sourced from specialist dealers through to contemporary Saville Row suit patterns. Narielwalla’s collages propose a new interpretation of these tailoring and sewing patterns as intriguing, abstracted drawings of the human form. Freed from function, they are drawings ahead of their time, anthropomorphic in origin and beautifully abstract in isolation. This catalogue features eight Butterfly Abstracts, a series of small format, intricately layered paper collages on bespoke, original tailoring patterns. These beautiful little gems are multilayered and feature intricate cut-outs, revealing glimpses of patterned papers, foils and other materials. Alongside these abstract works, there are a series of eight figurative collages inspired by real and imaginary characters, Savile Row Dandys, that feature in the artist’s life. Since Narielwalla’s first solo show, sponsored and exhibited by Sir Paul Smith in 2009, he has exhibited regularly in London and has shown work in Melbourne, Stockholm, Athens, New York and New Delhi. His work features in Private and Corporate collections worldwide.
