Angel Oracle: Illuminating Humanity's Path To Healing An Interview With Stewart Pearce

4

I nner W orkings by Joan Emmons NEW THIS ISSUE: Welcome everyone, to beyond what we know. There are so many things in life, almost all of them we don't know. We can feel them, we can touch them, we know that they exist, but do we really know... There is a saying that the more one experiences, the less one knows. I have found that to be my experience as well. As we journey our paths in life we awaken, open and re-experience time and time again something new and different in every aspect of life. We are entering a time beyond what was calendered by the Maya people. This according to their calendar is an end as well as a new beginning. Most everyone has experienced the changes occurring in the world, some have felt it more deeply than others. Some still are not even aware of what is happening. They say there is "scientific proof" of the shifts that are occurring. Of late, I have heard many people state that you can prove anything that you want with science. So it brings us to a cross-roads of sorts. Do we continue to "look for our knowing?" or do we let that aspect of self go through its own death. So many great minds these days are telling us not to use our knowing to "drive our bus." To let our hearts/souls show us a more expansive meaning to life. So what is this knowing that everyone is talking about? Does anyone truly have any of the answers? We would wish that they did, so that we could cuddle in our blanket of knowledge and be safe. But is it safe? If someone disproves our knowing are we still safe? Will we be able to make the shift to a "new" and different knowing? That is the dilemma that we are facing.

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

Is it time to give up the knowledge, accept that we really don't know and focus on our own feelings and thoughts and what we might be able to do with them to be constructive and contribute to a more loving world. Humanity is still destructive at the expense of someone else. We are still focused on ourselves. Rightfully so? Our existence is at stake. Or maybe it is just "our" safety and comfort we are concerned about. At subtle levels and not so subtle levels we are still playing with this. So many wonderful people are leaving the planet at this time. There are so many people who are experiencing the loss of fellow travellers, be it family or friends. Do we really know who they are? Have we reconciled the difference between their soul's light and their personality traits? I'm sure that this all sounds rather "negative" or "heavy" and we can wish this away in a flash with what we "know." We have the amazing ability to fill in the blanks at a moments notice.

But, with no blanks there is no room to expand. With no blanks we are pressed against the confinement of our own limiting beliefs. We can change, we can shift this old way of thinking "that if it isn't proven, it doesn't exist." We are walking into a new era of sorts for those of us who believe that. There is no "proof." We have collectively created this to be our reality, yes? Then lets live it! Let's give it all we have to give. Let this be the change that we are all seeking. Someone a long time ago, made a calendar of time, based on things we may or may not have access to. It is coming to an end, these people believed that there would be great changes to come. If we believe instead of "know" and stop looking for proof there is no reason not to live this part of the dream to its fullest. Let our hearts break open, let us stop hiding ourselves from each other, let yourself share yourself with the world in the only way that you believe to be true. If your belief is not of love, then maybe stay with someone for a period of time that is love. It is totally contagious. It will infect and affect you to the core of your being. Then take that experience and repeat it with everyone you come in contact with. Feel that presence whether you are safe enough to express it. It will happen, some day, some way it will sneak up on you and you will be able to express the most important feeling in life... ♥ ♥ ♥ See I didn't even have to write the word you understood. This holiday season there are so many people in need of warmth, kindness, smiles, hugs and yes love. Don't let a day go by that you do not spread your inner warmth and kindness, your smiles and hugs... and yes your love. In resurrection I have read in many places that there is great glory. I can only imagine that this glory is beyond my knowing and that I have not begun to be able to channel the magnitude of love that is. So without knowing, just on my faith, trust and belief I am safe, without knowing anything. Maybe this new era is about not knowing and flushing all that we think this is to just let ourselves be the most open vessels of love that we can. Our love and warmest wishes to both River Lee (Loving Earth) and Curtis White (Reflections of an Amateur Spiritual Spelunker) for their new arrivals, we expect pictures guys so that we can meet and greet our newest members of the ITJ family with all the love that they are. Stay tuned the journey has just begun.

Happy Holidays! ~ Happy NEW Year! ~ To life joyfully lived.

Aligning To Life's Rhythms and The True Nature Life Has Created In Us It's A World That Works For Everyone by Skye Hirst, Ph.D.

S

I witnessed this beautiful diversity – their loving selves were overflowing with a zest for life. Most were in retirement of sorts, but all continuing to expand their interests, passions and curiosities. And I was inspired. My friend would go for groceries two hours away and the beauty of the countryside on the way fed my soul. It was the long views, the spectacular contrasts and rich diversity that I loved. And there was always the next moment of sharing, she and I, of our lives, our lessons, our questionings, and readiness for what’s next. It’s a new life for her and for me. Our paths are in parallel in a funny way and each feeding the other as we acted in our own rhythms. I felt the folding and overlapping of common values but mostly I noticed her witnessing my process without judgment or direction. She’d ask a question at key moments that would provide me with a new perspective, but mostly she held the space for me to find my way. She listened a good deal at times while she was busy with food prep or readying herself for the next activity on her schedule. And then by sharing in her classes, her entertaining and interactions with neighbors, we’d pick up eggs and such, I witnessed her graciousness, her beauty, her authenticity of spirit and oneness with herself. It was truly lovely to behold. I felt graced by it and so grateful to be with her “lightness of being.” And of course, there was another person at this party, this visit - my friend’s husband who was not present in person, but oh so much of his life’s work, loves, passions and gifts of “masculine” building – were. He was away working on a houseboat – exploring another dream perhaps. Meanwhile, I got to sleep in his newly built house space and to be the beneficiary of his creation. I was held in this space safely, given shelter from the elements while being under a giant star-covered sky with moonlight shining in my face as I slept. I drummed on the porch overlooking the canyon – I watched the sun play color games with the distant mountains during the day. What rhythms, what glorious harmony in it all; to witness Life’s ways! So there you have it, a flowing essay on the evidence of those loving laws of Life. Can we recognize our connection to them, our part in how they work in and through us, and bring this light to consciousness? I do believe we can and are. It’s hard to see at times, but as Norm seems to be saying, it’s everywhere, in everything, sunrise, sunset, each turn of our day. Let’s hold the space open for this new becoming. I’ll be bringing you works from those who are helping us to understand better and better how it is we are being this Life we are – together, in oneness – not in competition, but in collaboration and in partnerships of highest values – where the full intrinsic of our natures come alive and serve the whole, the oneness that we live in, each contributors and creators. It brings together the feminine and masculine in balance – holding the space for the highest possible good for all and then building what is needed out of that intention. Thank you all for holding me and Normy in your lovingness as we go through our transitions. And yes, big thank you Dena and Joe for the loving generous gifts of yourselves.

o here we are beginning a new life. What and where we are going is perhaps what most people are asking at this time. What does it all mean? Is there any truth to the shift occurring? What are we to hope for? I just returned from New Mexico. I went out to visit a dear friend who took my body and soul into her care and gave me one of the best healing and renewal times I could ask for. It was in the high dessert where I could look into the distance and take a long view. It was wonderful to see the deer and turkeys come for breakfast each morning. The deer looked in the window wondering what we were all about. I looked back into their eyes to see a wonder, an openness, a not knowing and yet a waiting alertness for what might happen next. With my life taking new directions, and a lot of not knowing, I felt a gentle companionship there in those eyes. Then I would drum and hear my voice echoing across the canyons. The sound of the drum provided a singularity of focus as I felt my own inner drum come alive with each beat. At times I’d sense such oneness, and then my solitude, or perhaps my own autonomy would be more accurate. To live with awareness of both is perhaps the work at hand. So birth, death and rebirth – a rhythm – so sacred – so natural and so I’d sit with all this, noticing my own passages of awareness. I’d hold the wonder, the possibility for us all to embrace the life we are given, and share it with highest expectation - alert, vigilant as we open the space within us to connect to Life’s wisdom that it might shine through each of us. What seems to emerge is an awareness of grace that can come when we least expect it, and that it’s always holding us even when we don’t feel it. So now I notice that when I try to impose on the moment to make some ego driven force bring about what I think I need or want, the sacred rhythm gets interrupted. “Ok,” Norm says, “now what do you really want to say?” What I’m trying to say, is that there is a divine law that organizes the whole process and it seems that now is a time for the feminine in all of us to find a new way to hold the intention for this new way to emerge – not force, control, competition, dominance over – but a recognizing that which is real, true in each of us, that which we have been given as our nature, to act in alignment with that nature. Life has created us at this time with this nature, uniquely needed and called for at this time. In that - we allow a very high value to activate – philosopher de Chardin called it the right of man/woman to realize our true nature and support one another in that endeavor and in so doing we create a world that works for everyone. It is both our diversity and our uniqueness that this now needs. This ole world needs every one of us being in alignment with this self, that Life has created in us. It’s as if we are each different fingers in this oneness. To then witness one another and act in concert with those impulses for action that come from being in the present moment is a beauty to behold. And above all, as Sufic mystic, Vaughan-Lee says, begin each and every practice by generating compassion. To me that means do what it takes to connect to feeling loving within and all else organizes nicely. An example of how this works comes from the wonderful 10 days I’ve just experienced. My dear friend has just moved into her new house built by her husband’s skillful passionate hands. It sits atop a mountain on a cliff overlooking a canyon. My friend simply acted in concert with her own rhythm that happened to include me. She was engaged in learning to cook the Paleo diet. That was what I needed as well. She did yoga twice a week with local teachers she has found. We went for coffee following class where I heard from all the folks moving there of their vast enthusiasm and creative endeavors; rescuing a special dog, making quilts, climbing trails, bicycling around the world, seeing fall colors in special places, living off the grid, and visiting with a young skier on his way to New Zealand where he will photograph extreme skiing sports.

The Mystical Deaths of Resurrecting by Megan Don

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

And now a man came to him and asked, ‘Master, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?’ - Matt.19:16 In Gnostic Tradition, the man asking this question, quoted above, is known to be Lazarus, the brother of Mary Magdalene. He was extremely wealthy and also a very spiritually devoted soul; clearly so, as this question that he asks of Yeshua (Jesus in Aramaic), is a very big question. He is not asking for a blessing or a healing, but essentially is asking, “How may I gain all knowledge of life and death?” Or perhaps put another way, “I seek enlightenment, what must I do?” Yeshua replies to him, “If you want life, then go keep the commandments.” Lazarus is very quick to respond by saying that he already does, or perhaps in other words he may be saying, “I need to go deeper, I want to go beyond what I have learned so far.” Yeshua now tells him to go and sell all that he has, and to come follow him. Lazarus apparently left with a sorrowful heart. This was a big demand. Looking beyond the literal words of "go and sell all that you have," we can understand Yeshua’s words as meaning, "Are you willing to give up your life as you know it? Are you willing to release your identity of self in this world, the identity that your family has given you, the identity that makes you feel comfortable and safe in society? What about giving up the spiritual identity that you have created? Are you willing to let go of anything that is an obstacle to knowing who you truly are in God? Can you release all those things that you grasp onto in order to feel worthy in your soul and in the world?" Or ultimately, Yeshua is saying, "If you want life, then you must be prepared to die." No wonder Lazarus left with a little, or a lot, of sadness in his heart. He asked a big question and he got a big reply! Now we can only surmise what Lazarus then went through. I would say some very sincere inner soul-searching about what was really important to him. No doubt he had to be willing to surrender, on a very deep level, this life that he had so far lived, not only through the outer expression, but also his inner motives and desires, thoughts and emotions. This was a calling of great magnitude and would obviously bring every fear of his to the surface. His whole family and tribal history, his means of survival, his friends and loved ones, his way of understanding and relating to the world – all of these he would need to consider if he was willing to surrender and relate to them in a whole new way. Sound familiar? An important point to remember about surrender is that it is not always about giving something up, but instead, entering into a different relationship with whatever is in question, whether it be with family, friends, money, work, your spiritual life. And yes, there maybe some things that we need to drop for some time while an inner realignment happens, but ultimately it comes to "living in the world, not of the world." So, what did Lazarus do? He obviously said Yes to this command of Yeshua, as in John 11:1-44 we read of his rising from death, of resurrecting back into a new life and way of being. We are told that his illness and death were for the empowerment and teaching of humanity, and the glorification of the Creator. Yeshua explains to the other disciples that Lazarus has died for this very reason, and Thomas then exclaims, "let us go die with him," or, let us also go and learn these inner and secret teachings of this death and dying, of this eternal life and enlightenment. There are very elaborate and sophisticated teachings within the Gnostic Tradition of the death and afterlife process, akin to the Buddhist teachings, and Lazarus is a great knowledge-keeper of these. He can be of great help and assistance with the removal of all fear in any dying process, whether it be releasing the actual body or releasing old ways of being, so as to be born again into our new self. We all have our experiences of dying to this world and its ways, some larger than others, but we need to ask, "Are we really willing to die to that which we know and feel safe in?" We may not be particularly happy or we may not be particularly unhappy either, but we are all destined for something greater. Somewhere within us all there is a knowing of a deep and real passion of being, and an enlightenment of soul. At times

we can feel the fire of this passion inviting us to draw closer, yet fear will often divert or distract us, or bring up feelings of unworthiness, or any other myriad of reasons why we cannot enter into a greater knowledge of our being. Oftentimes we are given spiritual experiences and opportunities to let go of old behaviors, and yet, after the initial awakening or revelation, we somehow seem to slip back into our old skin without even realizing it. Such is the power of our habitual ways of viewing and being in our selves in this world. Why is this so? Why do we slip back into old skins – what about that new wine we just drank and felt such joy in receiving? What of our resurrection? I have watched myself do just this, and yet, when I look more closely, it seems to be more like, two steps forward, three back, another two steps forward, another three back, and so on – inching my way to God. Or put another way, a constant regression and progression, and yet, all of it is a progression of soul, it just does not feel like it at times. We must also remember that old emotional/thought patterns can return; our job is not to become discouraged, nor identify with, or grasp onto them. We are not this emotional/thinking chaos that can arise, and we must enter into an action of self-discipline so that we do not fall into them once more. Rather, let them pass on by, offering them up in prayer, asking that all beings experiencing such emotions/thoughts may be transformed, and keep walking forward into love and the arms of the Beloved. Let us not become as Lot’s wife who was turned into a pillar of salt as she looked back to where she had come from. How often do we become ossified when we look back? In Lazarus and Magdalene, we see two souls who took up their soulful places, that is, becoming who they were in God, yet, only after much purification and inner work, and entering a constant forward motion towards their Beloved. Similarly, we see souls such as Teresa of Avila, who wrote, I die because I do not die, and many others who also entered this process. In Lazarus, we see one who entered and mastered the death and dying process, and in Magdalene we see one who opened the way for a full feminine embodied enlightenment; both of course accessing these states of being through following the teachings and ways of the Master Yeshua. Yet, it has been spoken that Lazarus, Magdalene, and Yeshua are all of the same soul-essence, coming forth in different emanation bodies to fulfill the ultimate mission of one another. And when we do look deeply, it is seen that all three were needed (and more besides these three), to bring about the truth and embodiment of the teachings. Today, do we not experience the same thing, that is, are we all not needed to help one another come forward into the truth of our being? This is the wisdom of the Second Coming. The topic of the Second Coming requires a whole writing of its own, but briefly put we are the Second Coming. No longer is it the return of one enlightened soul showing the way, but it is the spark within each of us, destined for enlightenment, joining with each other so as to form the Greater Resurrected Body together. We have enormous inner resources, if we choose to access our inner source, and not to keep spinning on the surface of our being. We must keep falling into the depth of our spirit, not the depth of our smaller being, and only in this way will we find the Living Water that will quench all desires. Very often we get things backwards and upside down in this life. We look in the wrong places for our greatest treasure and wonder why we remain so poor. The most obvious, is that we seek our self-worth in our personality, in our identification with our worldly self, and our perceived, or want-to-be, spiritual self, and this is nothing more than seeking our own suffering. Oh, exactly what we are trying to get away from. Let us look for our spiritual self-worth in the rightful place, that is, who we are in God, our resurrected self. May we take this word, resurrection, into our meditation, seeking its true meaning in our life today, and ask ourselves the question, "Are we busy resurrecting the ego, or are we willing to die and be reborn?"

An important point to remember about surrender is that it is not always about giving something up, but instead, entering into a different relationship with whatever is in question,

Step into Vibrational Wellness 8 Tips for Intuitive Health by Melissa Boyd

W

e are all intuitive. We are all energy and light, spiritual beings here living in this physical experience. Many of us have forgotten we are cosmic souls with undiluted potential. Some of us have had to struggle to find our pathway to optimum health, I am one of them. From my teens to my early thirties I struggled with food and alcohol issues. Then, the big culprit was food! It was hard to hide a food issue, as I weighed 300 pounds; this was a cycle in my life. Losing weight, then gaining more back – a big car accident was the beginning of my journey back to self. It stopped me and I was literally unable to work – I had to think about my life, who I was and where I was in the world. I soon found support to assist me in learning about my unhealthy patterns. Now, after having lost 150 pounds and keeping it off, and clean and sober, I am a clear channel of light. I wake up each day with energy, gratitude and peace. Your vibrational wellness can start now! Our intuitive cells want each of us to experience bliss and joy in this life. When we can let go and raise our energy to that source, optimum health is possible.

Please join me in what I have found – here are eight tips for Intuitive Health: Listen to Your Body. Your body has a voice, it is sometimes as subtle as in stubbing your toe, or it speaks like a volcano and you have a stroke. It is telling you to listen. Over the years I have carried with me one of the best resources for learning what your body is saying, “Health Your Body, Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay.

2.

Eat Organic Foods. Foods, especially vegetables that are organic and, hopefully, local hold such rich nutrients for our cellular structure. Many people are unaware of the pesticides and toxins they ingest on a daily basis. This affects the unique energy system that fuels your wonderful physical machine. Start small and incorporate organic foods and watch your energy soar.

3.

Practice Yoga. Yoga allows us to come to the present moment, pay attention to the breath and, with daily practice, brings the body to a state of deep knowingness. I started yoga at 300 pounds, and it was a support as I released my weight. It was so profound that I now teach yoga to other people in recovery. Try yoga, allow your intuitive body to adjust and release.

4.

Solfeggio Frequencies. Sound is very healing and has been found to heal. Much like the hertz that runs our television and radio transmissions, there are higher frequencies that also affect the body in amazing ways. The solfeggio frequencies are often called the forgotten frequencies. Rediscovered by Dr. Joseph Puelo, they have been reported as helping with DNA repair and opening up the chakras to dynamic levels. The hertz frequencies include 396,852, 528, 639 and 741. Gratitude. One of the most powerful ways to shift your thoughts is to be grateful. There are many ways to practice gratitude. Start by thinking of four things you are grateful for each day. Increase this by expressing gratitude to friends, family, a clerk at the store, leaders who restore hope and peace, and extend this to people who you have yet to meet. If you have health issues, send gratitude to the parts of your body that work well and be open for healing to occur.

6.

Silent Meditation. Any form of mediation is beneficial; however silent mediation, even if it is just five minutes when you start, allows your energy to submit to the stillness. Meditating on an empty stomach first thing in the morning has been found to be most powerful, and is a wonderful way to start the day. Our minds can be so full of worry and stress – research suggests that a daily practice can improve productivity, reduce anxiety and create a sense of peace. Healing the mind can heal the body.

Let Go of Expectation and Negativity. How many times do you say to yourself any or all of the following statements: I’ll be happy when… If only… When I am able to… Someday things will be…. Once you let go of the expectation that someday things will be the way you want them to be, and realize that now things are just as they are, with no judgment or expectation, your life will change. It can start in this moment. Negative thoughts will not serve you – they will help you to move towards your optimum health by making your mind, body and spirit uncomfortable and invite you to let go and shift. When this occurs it is usually very profound and a cause for celebration.

8.

Celebrate You NOW! Please do not wait to celebrate you! Think about the billions of people that you share this beautiful planet with, and know that you were meant to be here in this time and space. I would also suggest that as you are reading this now, stop and look in the mirror, and tell yourself how magnificent you are! We all come from source energy and are divine; we just have to be reminded that we are. It is time to celebrate you! Thank yourself for who you are now!

Tales for the Journey ~ Transition to The Butterfly

By Kevin Pennell

I Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

t’s been said, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans for how you intend to live your life.” Please understand, I’m not against planning and organization. Planning and organization keeps us focused. Consider this though, how’s our willingness to change so we can improve, grow, and strive to become our highest and greatest self? Joseph Campbell provided some sound guidance about this. “We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is awaiting us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one is to come.” Just imagine if a caterpillar decided, “All I wish to do is eat” never allowing the metamorphosis to take place. I wonder if the caterpillar even knows of its destiny to change prior to its urge to spin and encapsulate itself in a cocoon, shed its old skin, and expend all its energy to change into the magnificent splendor of a butterfly? Or is it simply willing to go with the flow, relinquish its own plans, and move on to its unknown destiny? Storytellers, authors, even history share incredible accounts of how the hero enters on the scene as an average “Joe”, often of low status. They then face an insurmountable challenge which often demands changes in life, attitude, and environment. The changes may cost them everything, including their life, to pursue this quest. Despite hardships, our hero moves on, driven to complete the challenge. We listen, read, or watch intently as the story unfolds. The hero or heroine keeps moving forward, despite challenge after challenge. Further hardships encumber their journey, but for some reason they are tenacious in their effort. Given, some know and see their goal, yet others, like the caterpillar do not. As we become more engrossed in the story, we entertain thoughts of what keeps them going? Why don’t they give up? In some accounts, they have opportunities to return to the safety of their familiar past life. They’re tested along the way to give up and return to an old less taxing life. After all... wouldn’t that be easier? We even get frustrated, wishing to jump right into the story screaming “Just quit!” But they don’t quit, something urges them, drives them on as though their very existence demands they continue the quest. The hero keeps going, keeps shedding their figurative skin of old ways and habits in pursuit of their new life. When they reach the goal we applaud their success, shed tears of joy, and cheer for their victory. Our own reality returns. We wish we could be like that person. We sigh, wipe away the tears, shrug our shoulders, and return to the familiar, a life we know, a life of safety. Our events are safe, known, with no surprises waiting around shadowed corners. Some, however, recognize they have the same “stuff”. All they need to do is embrace a willingness to change. Shed their old skin, pursue their own magnificent life, and achieve the perceived impossible. Life is full of opportunities. Sometimes we, like the caterpillar, incubate as the change takes place. Similar to embryos, we constantly grow, becoming the best we can be. It’s as if a silver cord connects us to the same stuff that stars are made of. All we need to do is believe and accept the inner beauty that we are. We are greater than just this physical form. This process is seen throughout nature, death and resurrection. Only the “death” isn’t really death. Death is a transformation, a metamorphosis, that must take place in order to allow the beauty within to come forth. The caterpillar doesn’t hold on to its cocoon, it casts it aside because the old skin has no value, no purpose, in the new vibrant and beautiful life. So, as we enter into the transformative change life offers, don’t hang on to the things that no longer serve the greatest and highest good. Lay them aside and enjoy your flight

as the butterfly. We are butterflies waiting to shed the old and emerge into the magnificent splendor of our true nature... a spiritual being enjoying each flower of our human experience.

My God by Holly Howley

I grapple with that God and my God, and with the endless litany of rituals associated with my religion. I avoid disgruntled Catholic conversations at all costs. I refuse to defend my religion. I’ve never relied on other human beings to interface with My God and I’m never quite sure what to say to people who do.

W

hen grappling with the usual calamities of youth, things like heartache, injustice, bullies, not making the cheerleading team, my mother always had the same response. “Pray about it,” she’d say with intense ease. Her words relayed comfort, but her eyes had a “this is important” demeanor. And so even though I felt like saying, “I got a B, I’m not flunking out of school altogether!” Generally, I’d say a quick prayer for good measure.

Or, more likely because the figure pictured in the literature of the liberal, for a Catholic church, we attended was a Bohemian-looking twenty something man. Somehow I knew that he, God and Jesus, was with us. And, I hoped he was patient since my mother conferenced him in a few dozen times a day. I recall thinking of prayers, and probably religion in general, as a sort of equalizer between what could happen and what actually did. Like the time when I fell down our rather steep stairs and my mother quickly garnished the all white bottle of holy water from the pull down desk she had inherited from her grandmother. Within seconds of easing my tears, each of my scrapes and would-be bruises were blessed with dabs of water. And since nothing but a few achy muscles resulted from the fall, I remember thinking that the stuff must work. No broken bones or gashing head wounds. Just some routine pains. As I got a little older, I naturally began to question. Was all this praying really necessary? Somewhere in my early teenage years the questioning turned to sarcasm and then round about fifteen or so a healthy hostility set in. My mother’s faith in God and his ability to cure anything and everything began to simply make me mad. It occurred to me that she was wasting quite a bit of her time, and therefore mine, in deep prayer about situations that she should just plain take control of herself. And so, as she’d recite her “pray about it” mantra, I began rolling my eyes at her blatant disregard for reality. Surprisingly, though, I never stopped praying myself. Sometimes, like before a test, I’d find myself doing a safety prayer. The kind that just can’t hurt. But, mostly I really prayed and believed that he was listening and guiding. I vividly remember a moment in college when a friend asked for my advice. After describing all of her options, she looked to me and asked, “What would you do?” Without a moment’s hesitation, to my slight embarrassment, I said, “I’d pray about it.” It was probably the first time I acknowledged my own faith in prayer, no longer just an extension of my mother’s. Once, early in our marriage when faced with an important decision, my husband and I decided to pray. Together. It was an awkward moment. Between the two of us we had several decades of praying experience, but neither one was particularly comfortable with the public prayer approach. So after a few seconds of “you go, no you start,” I just launched in. As I began outlining all the details, telling God that we weren’t sure of our next step, that we appreciated the options, but needed his guidance, I looked over at my husband who was clearly trying to contain laughter. “Then you say the prayer!” I blurted. “It’s just a little more free flowing than I am used to” he said, still trying not to laugh. And then I began laughing because I knew exactly what he meant. I talk to God like I am talking to a friend not an almighty being that big statues are built to or wars are fought over. The God of statues and rosary beads has never been in sync with the being to which I pray. I’m not sure that guy would’ve been well suited for the early on journey, with my mother and me. That God always seemed a little too organized.

I thought about punting the question until later so that I could better formulate my response. Instead, I said in half whisper, “That’s where faith comes in. You have to figure out the answer to that question for yourself. That’s why we’re here.” He stared straight ahead. I worried that I was too vague or not emphatic enough. My response was a far cry from the “pray about it” mantra I’d been handed at his age. I was ready for him to ask me what I thought. To give him the comfort that his Mom believed. But instead he turned to me and whispered, “My faith tells me it’s 50/50.” I smiled. And I was pretty sure My God, the long-haired hippy God, was smiling too.

I was also fairly certain at an early age, that God, my God, was a good guy with an acute sense of humor. I don’t know why I never thought God could be a woman. Maybe because early on it was mostly me and my mom and I felt the need for a guy in the equation.

Last week in Church my eight year old asked me a simple question. “Has anyone ever met God? How do we really know he exists?”

On The Cover Assailed by Confusion by Sue Reed This issue we would like to welcome back artisit Sue Reed. Sue was the feature artist of our June/July 2005 issue, Rites of Passage. It seems fitting this issue 's theme of Death and Ressurection is in its own way a rite of passage. The painting on the cover, is titled "Assailed by Confusion" and in Sue's words "Is a vision of a soul lost in too many thoughts, too many feelings, as a lot of very sensitive people can be at times." Sue Reed has been a professional artist for over 30 years with an MFA in art from the University of Missouri. She has lived in several different states at various times in her life, such as Santa Fe, New Mexico, Calistoga, CA and in Maine three times over a 30 year period. She has taught art for many years, both privately and at the university level briefly. Her journey several years ago, also included a Florida based hand-painted clothing design business called Angelpaint.

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

The inspiration for her work, today, comes from inner visions that appear to her after meditating. Her paintings relay the healing power of imagery that taps into the collective unconscious to find and portray the depths within our own souls. Sue says: "Revealing inner voices beyond the mind's thoughts, and touching the heart are important to me. In all that I experience, always present, is the underlying hum of the universe. I can show this mystery with passion through the non-verbal poetry of line, shape, color and movement. I feel that my work emits a healing, soothing presence into the space in which it resides. I can sense this, and know that the painting moves and vibrates with a life of its own. I believe that people are attracted to this imagery because of this movement and healing quality."

Sue now resides in Rockland, Maine and has a unique jewelry company called Woman on Fire Designs. You will see by the pieces that we are showcasing, Sue's artistic talent transforms each piece of work, using the pallets of her paintings one can actually wear the essence of her art. "Each Piece Is Unique! These are like small details of my paintings, and the paint is pulled right off my palette! It's an unusual process. Different designs are created frequently, as I paint, and then make jewelry. The process itself is really quite complicated. I discovered it about 11 years ago, and it takes a lot of steps to get to the final piece of unique jewelry. I am soon going to make larger, sculptural pieces. I love making assemblages with these, so watch in the future for new pictures. I then use only real gemstones and brass, copper or silver wire, sometimes painted wire, and accent the piece. I match the stones and wire to what is happening with the colors of the paint. So, even though a piece may be the same shape, the colors are always different. You can, however, request that a work be mostly purple, say, or blue, or whatever you have in mind. Someone always stops me when I'm wearing a piece, and asks me where I got it. I hope that you too will wear them to express your uniqueness and originality. Sue's art, prints, jewelry and poetry can be found on her website at www.sueannreed.com. falls sideways, unconscious. The referee calls the fight. Flashbulbs go off in slow motion. I rush into the ring and drape a tiny towel over my jumbo shrimp’s shoulders and raise him up in the palm of my hand to thunderous cheers and applause. The ultrasound nurse tears off a series of 4 pictures and hands them to me. Our baby is due April 26th, which I announce to my wife was the date of the Chernobyl disaster. She tells me it was also her grandmother’s birthday. We decide that’s a better portent for the birth of our first child. This leads to an awkward chat about names. Katherine. We both like that name. I like Elizabeth and Victoria. My wife most definitely does not. Neither of us is sure about boys’ names yet. We have different tastes. I’m American. She’s Irish. I like the name William. She doesn’t. We have different temperaments and personalities, too. We were each shaped by where we grew up, and by the people in our lives. But, I don’t believe for a minute we were blank slates coming in. I don’t believe anyone is. We had some essential personalities to begin with. And the same will be true of our little one. After all, as a baby, my wife slept peacefully through the night, while I tried to escape my crib at 3am and climb onto the roof. So, thinking about the kind of person we’re going to meet soon is truly awe-inspiring. Maybe it’s a bit too awe-inspiring to take in all at once. Thankfully, we don’t have to. We’ve got six more months to get used to it. Then, god willing, we’ll have a lifetime to watch this new person we’ve created develop and grow. We will have front row seats to witness their talents and their troubles. We will be there to praise their achievements, support their dreams and ease them through their nightmares. And I’m looking forward to it all, shrimp cocktail or no.

So, thinking about the kind of person we’re going to meet soon is truly awe-inspiring.

Maybe it’s a bit too awe-inspiring to take in all at once.

Thankfully, we don’t have to.

Curtis White lives in Aberdeen, Scotland. He is a freelance copywriter, and an internationally ranked Chutes and Ladders champion (Grandmaster, 1st Class). Well, no. That’s not exactly true. He’s doesn’t play competitively. Not anymore. Not since that time in Istanbul when things got tragically out of hand. He’s given up that world now. Sure, he occasionally misses the razzle dazzle of the competitive board games circuit. The women. The cars. The cash. But, he rolled the dice. He took his turn at the table, and in the end he wound up with more ladders than he did chutes. And that’s the main thing. His email address is cwwhite78@gmail.com.

W

e just got back from the 13th week scan. On the monitor the baby was flipping and spinning and doing acrobatic things I was surprised by. My wife routinely trips walking down pretty straightforward sidewalks and I have about as much grace as a bull. So I hadn’t been ready for the stealthy movements my tiny offspring would be capable of. Even playing tennis, which is supposed to be a gentleman’s sport, I stomp and slam around the court in a kind of flat-footed, tongue-lolling rage, desperate to win the point by any means necessary. It’s hardly unbridled masculine power that makes me unwieldy, either. It’s more a matter of sheer, blind passion struggling to maximize every ounce of meager talent. It’s possible for me to play and win at sports, in the same way it’s possible for a golf cart to hit 50 miles per hour. It can happen, but it’s not pretty. So, the thought my little one may someday be able to perform a smooth, one-handed backhand crosscourt winner inspires me to awe and terror even now. The little one is the size of a jumbo shrimp at this stage, which is a handy reference point, but does nothing for my desire to eat shrimp cocktail ever again. In fact, various foods have been linked forever in my brain with the size of the little critter in my wife’s belly—so much so, that whenever I lift a spoon to my mouth or reach for a piece of fruit now, I pause for a moment, gripped by an irrational sort of guilt. It was incredible being in the darkened room with the ultrasound nurse watching the sharp, detailed images of a tiny little fetus bobbing and weaving, turning and twisting. He or she (in Scotland they don’t tell you the gender of the baby) is pretty active. The ultrasound nurse giggled discreetly and snapped a picture of the little one’s hands pumping up toward its face in a defensive boxing gesture. And that’s all it took. Suddenly, the little one was transformed in my mind into a miniature boxer. In my vision, I am a grizzled corner man barking direction at my little jumbo shrimp. He struggles to get up off the canvas after an uppercut has laid him out. “I didn’t hear no bell!" I shout through the right side of my mouth. He gets up in a haze, and shakes it off. The crowd begins to cheer, and the referee gives him a standing eight count. He does some fancy footwork and then he’s right back in it. ‘Stick and move. Stick and move,’ I shout. He blocks a left jab and lands a series of rapid-fire body blows on his opponent, a slightly larger jumbo shrimp. The barrage culminates as he connects with a right hook square in his opponent’s jaw. It knocks out his mouthpiece; he spins and

Dream Work Resurrects Our Connection to Art and Nature by Colleen Myers

I

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

t’s 3 am and I’ve awakened to write down my dream. In the bright circle of light I find I also want to write about death, resurrection, and Jeremy Taylor, whose marvelous book The Wisdom of Your Dreams I have just finished reading. The book is an update of his earlier, more whimsically titled work, When Pigs Fly and Water Runs Uphill. As I write this we are ten days away from a pivotal national election. The country is divided into red states and blue states, and all eyes are on those few that are polling purple. If Snoopy were to fly over the map of the United States tonight, he would look in vain for the yellow states and the green ones. He would lose his way. We are all losing our way. In addition to the death of nature, the increasing inevitability of climate change, we add the death of civil society, as we have known it. Citizens United, the ironically titled Supreme Court case, has wildly tilted public discourse in the direction of 30-second corporate-funded put-downs of anyone willing to stand for public office. Voters are afraid to talk to one another and “unfriend” anyone who posts an upsetting political sound-byte on their “wall.” The world narrows down to two squares on a ballot, one of which must be fully blackened in. Budget deficits cripple nations and households, both haves and have-nots. People are the 99% or the 47%. A US college education costs more than most people on the planet will earn in a lifetime. Nothing adds up. Most of what our college students eat would not have been considered food by their grandparents. Freeways become parking lots and lives tick away in fear and frustration. We send drones to kill people who send suicide bombers to kill us. The universal hijab threatens to cover even our eyes. 350.org tells us the end is near. I’m feeling all this and yet I’m also feeling my dream. I’m a dreamer, not in the sense of denying reality, but in the sense that Jeremy Taylor uses the word… someone spelunking for clues to a renewed archetype of Willing Sacrifice in a time of ultimate need. I’m a community organizer, too. Not in the sense that Barack Obama was, but in the sense that Jeremy Taylor uses it to describe his life’s work…. group projective dream work. Death is all around us in our waking life, and it means destruction of all that we hold dear. But in the dream world, says Taylor, death “is always deeply associated with the growth of personality and character.” Some cherished view we have of the world and ourselves has to “die” in order for a new understanding to be “born,” or an old wisdom resurrected. We have to recognize that our projections of both the Dark Shadow and the Bright Shadow upon other people (see the works of C.G. Jung) have to be withdrawn into ourselves for the enrichment or our inner lives and the salvation of our communities. Group projective dream work allows us to do just that, and it can be done by anyone who reads the book and calls a circle together. I am a second-year student in the Chaplaincy Institute of Maine (ChIME), an interfaith wisdom school that trains adults to become skilled at presence, and relies upon art to awaken and inform each student’s sense of the sacred acting in their lives. Last year, I was somewhat frustrated because other students seemed to have a pipeline to the divine that had bypassed me. “I don’t get messages. Why does everyone else?” was my secret self-talk. When I breathed this to my mentor she asked simply, “What are you doing to receive?” After the “reception” question had ricocheted around in me for a few months, I began to have memorable dreams, and I began to write them down. It had been a long time since I’d done this. Also, I found myself making sketches in my dream journal, so I could show my dream to my therapist, and not just tell it. Even a small fragment of a dream, I noticed, made sense when seen in the sweep of a month’s worth of dreams, then a summer’s worth. I have many years worth of dreams recorded in those boxes I moved to Portland last year. They’re all mixed in with recipes, cancelled checks, family photos, and clippings. I thought I’d sort through all this and write about it when I retired, but now I’m thinking there’s divine messages in those piles that can’t wait any longer to be received. Also, I no longer think that those messages are just for me. I realize they are related to the world we share. I owe that perspective to Jeremy Taylor, too Dreams are the art that calls us out of sleep. Art is not the frosting on the cake, it is the cake. Metaphor is the essential food of our lives. My fellow student said last night she is so nourished by the fall foliage she barely requires calories. Dreams are the fall foliage of our winter nights. They wake us up with their rustling and rusting. 14 Inner Tapestry Dec 2012/Jan 2013

Harvesting our dreams is like foraging for food in a forest. We must know where to look for it, and we must look before we step on something alive. We must use all our senses to find that which is nourishing, and not overlook anything edible. The humblest, nearly submerged root leads to a towering tree, and as we feel its girth we look up and there, way up there in the branches, is the fruit that seeds our passion. Having eaten the fruit, we lie down under the tree and sleep again. Another dream comes and we begin to follow it. This time we find ourselves at the water’s edge and there are big round pebbles like loaves of whole wheat, rye, and white bread submerged in the clear water. How far down are they? It looks like three or four feet but the water is so clear they could be miles from here. What happens when groups of people carefully harvest their dream lives and then begin to share them? I bring my dream of the submerged loaves to the group and the meanings multiply like Jesus’ loaves and fishes in the Biblical parable. “Magic changes consciousness, that’s what its for,” says Taylor over the phone. Changing consciousness also creates magic in human relations, and the ripple effects never stop widening. One person tells the story of her dream and each listener in the circle hears it on the canvas of his imagination and says, “If this were my dream, the loaves of bread under the water would be…” “Aha!” says the dreamer, “that resonates with me.” Or there is no resonance and the hearers’ imagination does not “stick” to the dreamer. But it sticks to the hearer, who now has a new metaphor with which to work his own life. “Community organizing” is what Jeremy Taylor calls this process of group projective dream work. “Projection is not a bad thing, it’s inevitable, natural and necessary, like digestion,” he says. Careful dream work in groups allows us to own our projections, and that process enriches everyone in the group. What we get from the process of others projecting onto our dreams is this, he says: We are happier because our problems have been reframed in a more interesting way! Taylor believes that as a species we have come as far as we can with the archetypes of the past, many of which are killing us and threatening to extinguish most forms of life on Earth. But he believes that archetypes can change, and that they do change as a result of individual dreamers becoming more conscious and acting in ways that reflect that changed awareness. “If we are to survive, we must learn as much about our own unconscious depths and creative possibilities as we know about the structure of the atom and the makeup of the stars. Our dreams are an indispensable key to that learning. We must consciously explore this realm further. We can afford to wait no longer.” Colleen Myers has studied and practiced law and theology for years, and is delighted to be a member of the ChIME beloved community. ourwellnesshome@yahoo.com 207-409-9391. Following The Sun by Marilyn Hardy, M.S., CFP

I

m beginning the story at sundown, which may sound like the end of the story. In one way it is. Allie, my beloved canine companion for 15 years, has died. I am devastatingly heartbroken, bereft. I am with the sun in its long dark night’s passage through the underworld.

The story goes that there was a time of crisis in the early life of our planet. A mass of proliferating microorganisms were vying for the food supply that was slowly running out. Something new had to happen. It was out of dire necessity that our planet looked toward the Sun to work something out.

It’s the indisputable truth of our senses, when the sun has completed its full arc across the daytime sky that it sinks into the earth or is swallowed up by the sea. One cultural myth has it carried on a boat through the underworld. Another has it nearly dying, fading into a mere skeleton that must be clothed anew with flesh each day. Yet another has it swallowed into the belly of a fish that swims with it to the east, vomiting it up at dawn.

What is aroused at times of breakdown and transformation? I’m talking about an impulse, buried deep within us all, that is as old as the sun and earth.

All I know right now is the nonnegotiable darkness here. There’s no ground on which to oppose or challenge death’s sovereignty. The only way is to yield into its embrace, sinking down, and yet further down, to some deeper ground that holds the secret of its place in life—of life.

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

The Fascination

My fascination with the Sun first began when Allie was young and vital. He was my sunny golden boy, his coat rich shades of amber. A strong alpha force, he was the breath of new life in my world as I grieved the loss of my father. The allure to our fiery star was a story, and the potent image it evoked. It stirred something within me, and working the way images do, at subterranean levels, it finally succeeded, slowly but surely, in uprooting me from my long-term home on the coast of Maine. With Allie by my side, and no clear agenda, I found myself heading west to the high desert, to the land of enchantment…the land of the Sun. This is a personal story. I tell it because it is not only my story, but also ours, yours and mine. And perhaps, as it did for me, it will connect you to a forgotten sense of wonder and magic that is at the very heart of life’s impulse to shift, transform, venture into the dark.

The Sun in the Eye And that’s just the beginning of the story, for that process of capturing light was a miracle that kept delivering in evermore complex and wondrous ways, until finally, through the long evolutionary unfolding, it burst into life in the retina of our eyes.

I had been feeling restless and at odds with my life and work. You know the feeling.

I was ripe for magic, but let me be clear. I’m not talking about clever sleight-of-hand. I’m talking about the magic that pervades the universe. Magic is our ability to be penetrated by the everyday mysteries—how the Sun, for example, miraculously rises each morning to give us the blessing of light. Magic is ultimately our ability, in times of crises, to take a leap into the unknown.

Into the Interface I had been feeling restless and at odds with my life and work. You know the feeling. We all have our unique version of this universal angst that awakens and haunts in the night when it’s time for change. The big questions arise, from those that rock the foundation of our identities and shift the trajectory of our lives. Our ecological and spiritual crisis was impacting me, as it is all of us. I was drawn to the interface, where body and psyche are inextricably linked with earth and cosmos. At this interface lies a harsh and beautiful truth that holds a key to our destiny: we are part of the larger family embedded in a great evolving story. We are the earth becoming conscious of itself, within endless cycles of creation and destruction.

The Story The vision that changed the direction of my life is the story of the sun, the earth and the early chlorophyll molecule. It is not a dry account from an old science book, so I ask you not to dismiss it too quickly as an event that happened in an inanimate universe way back when. After all, you owe your life to this story… and further more it’s not over...and it may be calling to you. 16 Inner Tapestry Dec 2012/Jan 2013

Penetrating the photosynthetic mystery, we enter the magic of the creative genius at the very heart of life: a tiny organism, an early bacterium actually, learned to capture a photon in a precise and novel way, transmuting this unit of light from our sun into green, into matter… into body.

Our Eyes! We are able to see only because the earth and the sun figured something out eons ago. Enfolded in this creative act there was a dream: a dream of the green of moss and fern, pine and elm, a dream of creatures that slither and glide, roam and climb. There was a dream of you and me and all the sentient beings that grace our lives. Sometimes I would stare at Allie, in awe of the beauty and the mastery of nature. Our eyes meeting with that unifying sparkle…Our eyes, across species and races, are all capturing the light of the same sun!

The World Offers Itself… The image of the Sun in the Eye became my guiding image. I painted it, hearing words from somewhere deep within that my work was in the image. I knew that to be true.

In the sun-drenched Southwest, I was inspired to embark on a film project entitled… Song of the Sun. Magically events occurred that affirmed my course. Synchronicity seemed to guide the interview process, with people “showing up” with unique links with the Sun. Their wide range of voices energized an emerging consciousness that reconnects us to the earth and stars; and the Sun, our star, was the gravitational force pulling it all together! The film’s unfolding was not always smooth and easy; journeys of the heart and soul never are. They include hardship, strife and sacrifice. As much as the Sun is the generative source of life—a symbol of light and divinity—it also casts large shadows; it carries a burning and destructive force in its unrelenting course across the desert sky. And at the end of each day, we witness our star’s return to its home in the underworld.

Following the Sun…down When Allie began to fail, the desert landscape lost its golden glow. He was the constant in my life. With me from the conception of the project, he lay by my side day after day in the edit suite. Now, as I was giving birth to the first phase of the project, he was entering the twilight of his life. Struggling with the large forces of birth and death within me, and anticipating the approaching loss, I found myself yearning for the ocean and the comfort of old friends around me. Allie went full circle with me back to Maine. Although quite feeble, he could still make his way over the rocks by our coastal home, and one last summer he swam in the sun-sparkling sea.

17 In those poignant days, before and after Allie’s death, the darkness that consumed me was overwhelming. Even now, I feel I’m drowning in a large wave of sorrow that I’ll never survive—and yet I do, time and again, surface. There are moments, although fleeting, when the shroud of sorrow lifts and transforms into great wings, coaxing my heart to expand into a shattered openness. I feel an alchemical process brewing deep within, a depth only reached through the power of grief’s rampage, stripping me down to the bones of death’s uncompromising finality.

is opening to the Sun, photon by photon filling me with life’s regenerative force… love… and I know I will continue to follow our star. And so it’s not the end of the story. For as you follow the Sun with me on its underground journey through the dark night, and you keep your eyes on the horizon and your vision clear, you begin to see slivers of light cutting through the seemingly impenetrable blackness… and then rising… slowing rising into the fullness of the heart, the Sun breaks open a new day.

When the heartache seems too much to bear, I remember the image. I look into the Sun’s eye that is looking back at me. I think about the tiny chlorophyll molecule and that moment of darkness when the imagination at the heart of life was sparked.

I close my eyes and enter the silence within me; I feel that spark, that impulse. Slowly my arm rises and a tentative hand extends, fingers delicately unfolding, opening like soft lips to pluck a photon from the air. That’s all I can do today. It’s not a bold movement into the world, but in this small gesture is the revelation of the earth and sun. The earth, my body, my heart

s I travel back to Maine after some college visits with my senior daughter, I find myself asking these questions during some writing time: How do I want my life to feel as each day unfolds? How do I want my life to be reflected back to others? How do I want to walk the path on which I awake each morning? Sometimes I have these feelings. There are moments when the criticisms of the past no longer penetrate my heart and soul. I feel moments when worldly stresses, like finances, no longer feed my hunger for carbohydrates (mmmm, love those tortilla chips!) as a means of coping. I feel moments when the guilt of a failed marriage no longer carries any emotional weight. I feel moments when the love I have for everyone in my life is insurmountable and truly unconditional. I have moments when I do not buy into the frantic pace of our Western culture, and I actually sit still just to be still. I have moments when my compassion for whomever I am sharing that particular moment is allencompassing and truly heart driven. There are moments when every thought I have, every feeling I have, and every action I take is deeply connected to all of the love within me and all of the love that surrounds me in nature, plants, animals, earth, and sky. And then there are moments when fear has a firm grip on me. These are the moments when I worry about my daughters, revisit some of my decisions, question my role on this earth, or wonder about finances. Many worries creep into my mind and play out as an unsettled stomach or clenched teeth or eating too many chips! And, so this is my struggle: love, trust, and faith vs. fear. Three against one! Fear should lose with those odds, and, yet, its grip can be strong at times. How have I worked my way through this struggle? How has fear slowly but steadily lost its grip on me? Well, William Shakespeare’s most famous literary quote holds the answer for me, “To Be Or Not To Be.” The answer is simple, yet wonderfully profound. “Be. Just Be.” For the past 18 months, I have been fairly dedicated to the practice of meditating or journeying (a Shaman tradition) on a daily basis. This practice can take place in several different forms for me: drumming, silence, flute playing, writing, journeying, or visualization. Each session is 10-30 minutes long, sometimes longer, of allowing

me to just be. It is during these moments when I am able to completely connect with the deepest part of my soul, my essence, my heart, my higher self. It is during these moments when I feel the love that connects each of us, no matter who and where we are. It is during these moments when I feel complete trust and faith in God or Spirit and the Life that is being lived through my body. There is no doubt in my heart that these moments of just being bring more calmness, peace, and love to the day as it unfolds. Even as I write this, which is helping me connect to my heart, I can feel the human worries drift away in silence. One of the books that has helped in this journey of just being is Jon Kabat-Zinn’s, Wherever You Go There You Are. Kabat-Zinn artfully and plainly gives us permission and direction to mindfully meditate each and every day. He and I both agree that this practice has brought enrichment and joy to even the most mundane aspects of the day, and certainly has fostered peace, mindfulness, and calmness amongst the worldly chaos. Kabatt-Zinn also helped me to understand that meditating, or just being still does not have to take place in some strict form, that, indeed, there are many different ways to meditate or just be: yoga, chakra clearing, breathing exercises, visualization, and walking, just to name a few. Being still for 10-30 minutes each morning has made a significant difference in how the day unfolds for me. Learning to journey, as taught to me by Maine’s Dory Cote, has helped me to connect each day with nature, earth, and my guides. The difference has been profound, and now I experience each day with gratitude for all that is within me, around me, and unseen by me. Our spirits truly are amazing beings. For me, understanding, loving, and trusting in my being in this world has been shown best to me by just being still on a daily basis. To be or not to be? Be! Paul has been working as a holistic and earth energy practitioner for the past 10 years as a dowser & geomancer. He recently completed a shaman apprenticeship with Maine’s Dory Cote, and his Earth Energy training was with JJ Moeller. Paul teaches classes across New England at holistic stores and for community organizations, and serves clients one-on-one. More info about Paul can be found at www.trustyourspirit.org.

Becoming The Change by River J. Lee

Our deep love for life and this planet makes many of us want to live intentionally connected to the earth in good stewardship. In that vein, this column explores sustainable living, practical skills for nurturing the inner hunter/gatherer and stories from the wilderness. I feel like five lifetimes have been crammed into my life so far. My personal evolution has followed a natural progression and I feel very different from who I used to be. Some metamorphoses have been dramatic and others subtle, but each was necessary for my growth, healing and expanded awareness. The opportunity for transformation is available to all people. Like individuals, I believe that humanity as a whole has evolutionary choices. Through the ages humanity has explored different ideas, different technologies and different mental structures. It seems that humanity is undergoing yet another transformation in its journey. Since society and individuals mirror each other, a search of one’s personal journey can give clues about where society might be headed. In this spirit, I will explore and relate my journey to the changes in society.

Childhood Adventures, Lessons & Traumas Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

I grew up traveling with my family overseas. We lived in North Africa and the Middle East. It was a wonderful adventure, a powerful learning experience and traumatic all at the same time. As a child I swam in the Caspian Sea, let the sands of the Sahara Desert slip through my fingers, snorkeled with schools of fish in the Mediterranean Sea and traveled across vast expanses of open desert with my family. I developed a love for wild places and remote travel that I retain to this day. I continue to search out these types of positive and fulfilling experiences. Despite cultural differences, and differences in skin color and dress, I found that people everywhere seemed to want the same things. People wanted to be safe, wanted to love and be loved, wanted a place where they belonged, wanted satisfying work and family and wanted adequate food and drink. Most people we encountered were friendly and accommodating. As a result I developed a very positive view of humanity. My family had inherited many limiting beliefs and traumas that were sadly passed on to me and my siblings. I grew up feeling afraid, angry, shy and wounded. Over time, the anger deepened into a smoldering rage. This era of my life abruptly ended when my parents sent me back to the United States to live with my grandmother and finish high school. I relate my experience to society in that there is so much good in the world that we have created for ourselves. I think that the ideas of personal freedom and self determination are some of the best ideas of our times. Our era is defined by technological prowess which will hopefully provide us with possibilities for living more sustainably. However, we have inherited some serious problems that threaten the future of our species and the planet. We need to perceive ourselves as an inseparable part of a complex and delicate ecosystem. We need sustainable technologies. We need companies that are a power for good. We need to reduce our population on this planet.

Self Destruct Mode Upon my return to the U.S., I thought I had found freedom from my childhood torments, but instead experienced a rapidly escalating sense of alienation, culture shock, loneliness, confusion, fear and anger. I spiraled down into a dark place of self destruction. I found myself heading down a path in which I would re-create all the worst parts of my childhood. I acted out my anger in some typical ways that a young person does. I hung out with unhealthy and sometimes scary people and I put myself in dangerous and risky situations. This period lasted for about a year and I feel lucky to have survived. We’ve poisoned the earth and ourselves with the chemicals that we’ve created. Our species has overpopulated the earth creating a terrible draw on the natural resources. We’ve decimated the fisheries and the rainforests which are the heart and lungs of the earth. We’ve pumped so much green house gas into the atmosphere that we’ve changed the climate. Meteorological havoc and ecological collapse are possible consequences in the near future. 18 Inner Tapestry Dec 2012/Jan 2013

Healing Journey I didn’t find my way all by myself. People who had once been in a dark place taught me how to heal. It took a conscious effort and a willingness to work hard, but I did heal. After I had worked through the past, I began to learn how to live. For me, I explored the world of climbing. I had a passion and love for rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. I followed that passion to many beautiful experiences. I began to feel strong, powerful, whole and excited. I began guiding and introducing others to the freedom of the hills*. We need to work together to create the world we want. Each of us holds a key to the new world that we are creating. Explore, participate and change the world that you live in. Influence others with your enthusiasm for positive change.

Spiritual Calling After many years of climbing and guiding, I began to feel that there was something more for me. I thought and meditated about this feeling and felt that I wanted to help people somehow. I was afraid, however, of the idea of change. Within a year I left the guiding world and entered a period of waiting and searching. I eventually found my way and began to study the healing arts. At the same time, I began to be interested in sustainable living concepts. I built an off the grid solar house, dabbled with a garden, composted my “human manure,”** and converted a truck to run on veggie oil. There was much trial and error and I struggled quite a lot. I made plenty of mistakes while trying to help others and in trying to live sustainably. Some of the lessons were hard to learn. I had difficulty asking for help and finding healthy community. It felt stressful to go “against the grain” of the mainstream culture. Social change can be stressful. I do think that gathering with like-minded people is important for support. There are many of us out there, but if we don’t connect, it is easy to feel isolated and ineffectual. It is important to me to feel that my actions are having a positive change in the world around me. Think about what you can influence in your sphere and do what you can. Some of us will make small changes and others will make big changes, but in the end all of our actions will combine to create a new social consciousness.

The Call to Family and Community After a major change in my life, I built a cabin in the hills of Western Maine and spent the winter there. I had some wonderful friends close by and enjoyed learning how to hunt and fish for food. During my meditations at the cabin, I began to realize that I wanted to experience family and children of my own. Soon afterwards I met a woman. We built a life together and found a great measure of peace and connection. We have a child that is due to be born by the time this publication goes to print. I think about what we will give our child and compare that with what was given to me as a child. Though we won’t be flawless parents, I don’t feel that I’ll pass on the cycle of trauma and limiting beliefs that were passed to me as a child. harvested my pumpkins and tomatoes yesterday. The first frost of the year was upon us and it had to be done. Yet, while gathering the wonderful bounty the harvest provided, I couldn’t help but feel something for the plants. They had been flourishing all season, putting all of their energy into growing strong and healthy and producing their beautiful fruits (vegetables) and here I was yanking them out of the ground and tossing them on the compost pile. One minute they were rich and healthy plants and the next they were mulch. It was a very poignant moment of experiencing the cycle of life. Of course everything is born, grows and dies, but there seems to be a cognitive dissonance in people these days. They can understand the concept abstractly, or on a television program, but there seems to be very little true understanding of the full meaning of this. When something dies it goes back to the earth to nourish the next thing that grows. It is part of the beauty of the life process. All things follow this cycle. The dawn brings the birth of a new day while the dusk signals the onset of night and the end of daylight. The new moon appears each month, grows in size until full, and then wanes. The seasons cycle from spring to summer to autumn to winter in a never-ending circle of birth, death and rebirth. We, as human beings have roughly 80 years from start to finish and once things begin to breakdown the end can come much quicker. On a longer timeline the cycles of ages can take thousands of years. The larger cycles can often have an influence and impact on other shorter cycles. The cycle of the seasons from autumn to winter brings the frost that kills the plants, ending their cycle. The fall of a civilization can cut short the life cycle of a large number of the people living within that civilization. This cycle is very apparent in the course of the development of societies. A group of people comes together with common values and commitment. They form a community that begins to grow and prosper. Given time and good fortune, it can become a robust society full of culture and innovation. Eventually it might even become a great civilization with influence that spreads to other societies. Eventually however, things begin to break down, decay sets in, and the society passes into the annals of history and finally... myth. A new day then dawns on the next group of people gathering together. At the core of this cycle is change. Change represents the movement from one state of being to the next and so on. For anything to grow and develop there must be change. In fact we live in a world that is in a constant state of change. It is just that the changes are most often too subtle for us to notice except over long periods of time.

In middle age we can look back on our childhood and notice how much things have changed, but on a day-to-day basis things seem the same. For us, here and now at the end of 2012, we have entered a time of dramatic change. We have reached the end of a great cycle of ages and it is going to have an impact on all of us. As this larger cycle reaches its conclusion and begins its rebirth, all of the smaller cycles within it are going to have to adapt to the end of the old cycle and new way of being. For many it is easy to interpret this as saying that we have reached the end of our civilization, however I don’t believe that is correct. It is more of a time of dramatic change that will have a significant impact on our civilization. We will still exist after this time of change, but the world may look rather different once we have navigated our way through it. The most important thing we can do is to be aware of the changes and put ourselves in a position to react and adapt to them in a calm and mindful manner. By being aware of the cyclical nature of things we can be prepared to deal with the changes as they occur. The cycle is best expressed in the symbol of the yin/yang. It is one of the oldest and best-known life symbols in the world, but few understand its full meaning. It represents the two poles of existence, which are opposite but complementary, and which replace each other in a constant cycle. The darkness and light revolve around each other, one growing strong as the other weakens and vice versa. As I mentioned above, these cycles can be large or small. We encounter some of them on a daily basis, while others can take years or decades to cycle through. The large cycle we are living through at the moment is on a scale we are not really able to comprehend. The end of this cycle has been taking place for the past 20 years. It will take just as long for the beginning of the new cycle to commence. We stand at a significant moment in time. The end of this cycle signifies the power of the dark ascending as the light weakens. It will be some time before the new cycle begins and the light returns. We need to consider our actions carefully. In times like this it is important for those with the power of light to retreat, so that the darkness cannot encroach upon them. This retreat is not to be confused with running away. Instead it is a sign of strength to gather one’s forces in a safe place and wait until the time is right to emerge. The light will return. Those who have held to the path of truth and peace and light will be in ascension. We will come full circle. Until then... Nourish your Body  Calm your Mind  Expand your Heart  Honor your Soul. Wishing you much peace.

A Breath of Healing by Donna Amrita Davidge

Death For those who can watch... First a clip on aging that brings some humor and some warmness to the subject of aging. http://biggeekdad.com/2012/09/a-seniors-prayer/ Second, reasons why not eating meat saves animals from death and more. VEGETARIAN DIETS:

As I picked up a beautiful red leaf today on a drizzly October morning I had the thought that leaves return to the colors of the lower chakras before they fully return to the earth. They do not turn blue or purple, the colors of the sky and higher consciousness. They go to the beautiful colors of red, orange and yellow as if the line of energy was being returned to earth (which it is) after the leaves have lived green, the color of the heart/I am not sure what it all means. Nature continues to mystify and astonish me. Driving by a huge beautiful moose (with an amazing rack of antlers) lying on the back of a truck, it looks asleep. It is moose hunting season. He was recently killed. In yoga the pose of total repose is corpse, the dead man, savasana. It is here we rest our body, mind and breath. After ten minutes in this pose on stress filled days I am renewed. After intense physical practice or between intense yoga poses corpse is a healing balance, a powerful tool of learning to receive, let go, give our bodies to the earth.

\

Death. A huge subject. It can go in many directions. Metaphysically each moment is a death. The present becomes the past. “This too shall pass.” Each person, each being, born will pass. The mystery is when and how.

Some fear death. Others do not. Some say you cannot live fully if you fear death. Others hope for a better life after this one. Some believe this is it, one time around – one life, one chance. Others, like yogis, believe in reincarnation; that means we are all resurrected. Yogis believe in Karma, that what happens in this life cycle is a result of who (or what) we have been and what we have done in the past. Buddhists, I have heard, believe that life is preparation for the moment of death.

The Last Frontier is a book soon to be released by New World Publishing. The author Julia Assante, PhD, is both a psychic and a scientist. Her perspective, though I have not read all of the interesting three hundred seventy pages, is that visitations are real. A guest at our retreat, Jane Lahr, wrote a book about a woman named Joan Grant (visit her site JoanGrant.net). Joan had done past life regressions on Jane. Joan had written several historical novels, which were reviewed with praise for her accuracy of research for historic content. Joan simply said she had done no research; she had been there. She helped Jane extricate herself from a marriage and heal a knee issue which she told Jane was from a battle wound.

Another woman at our retreat recounted to us a visitation from her mother, who had lived with her and her husband up until her death from lung disease. She had smoked until the end. The woman had woken up to the smell of cigarette smoke, which her husband did not smell. She went into another room to “speak” with her mother. Her mother had been very upset after 9-11. When she visited her daughter she communicated that she was with the terrorists now. It was all right because they had done what they believed in their heart. This concept seems difficult for yogis to embrace, that the taking of any life with violence is acceptable or justified. Yet in the Bhagavad gita Krishna tells Arjuna, the warrior who is in turmoil about having to kill in battle, that death and life should be considered as on equal planes. In yoga, because of this belief, one may be told there is no need for grief when someone dies. It is all part of the cycle. Dr. Assante talks about reconciliation in death or right before someone passes. I have been told that those who have passed on may help us more from the other side. I had deep-rooted issues with my mother. Her last words to me just before she died dissolved much of the ill record between us. A friend of mine who I mentioned in an article a few years back as a fellow “elder” (or at least approaching eldership), recently had a car accident that put him in a coma. After twenty-one days, despite the fact he was beginning to blink 20 Inner Tapestry Dec 2012/Jan 2013

and grip people’s arms (signals of progress?) his wife stopped his life support. Is this good or bad? Right or wrong? We cling to life. Should we? Do people like him (he had on no seat belt and it was early morning) have death wishes?

Yoga Nidra (yoga sleep) takes the practice of corpse a step further. Laying perfectly still, first the body is physically relaxed by a guiding voice, then the breath is directed to awareness, then mental imagery. Yoga nidra takes us to a place between waking and actual sleep. Every time I see road kill or a murdered animal like the moose I feel sadness for the innocent victim. In yoga ahimsa is a principle of non-harming in our actions as well as our words. It is not an easy practice. In Maine, where the hills and lakesides and beautiful rural pristine areas are being blasted in the name of a false green energy, I have done my best to educate and fight the murdering of eagles, bats and harming to oxygen giving forests and to human health. Words harm or heal. When those in power use words and money to bribe and lie about the benefits of industrial wind turbines (I cannot call them farms, that too feels like a lie) it is the death here that saddens me deeply. The mystery of good and evil, right and wrong, conflict and powerlessness haunt my mind. My teacher Yogi Bhajan gave me a meditation for haunting thoughts years ago. These tools are helpful when the mind overtakes us with things we do not understand and cannot control. Life and death are one of those things. We will all face death ourselves even as our culture seems to push it on the back burner. The questions of life and death are still there. Books like The Last Frontier help us face, ponder and maybe even make sense of it. In Kundalini Yoga one of the most basic and effective meditations use four primal sounds. SA TA NA MA They mean life, death, infinity and resurrection, the whole cycle of existence. Many mantras in yoga simply are different words for the creator. In Kundalini Yoga God is the energy that generates, organizes and/destroys, delivers all. Whatever your belief there is something out there that has ultimate control. May we remember each day as a gift from the Creator, not living in the past but having gratitude for this breath, leaving the exhale to take in our next moment of life—inhale. May this New Year and next year remind us of these cycles, which the winter holiday celebrates. “You are already enlightened beings, you are born with spirit, you live by the spirit, you will die when your spirit leaves you.” Yogi Bhajan

ave you ever had the sneaky suspicion that there is no actual separation between us or any thing? “All is one” is a teaching offered by all the masters it seems. Even Dr. Bronner is on board! This is only a spiritual concept until it is experienced. The conceptual and the experienced are worlds apart. At the end of Savasana one time, I experienced a wave of boundary-free existence. I felt like there was no separation from the people in yoga class, the floor, the walls, the fire crackling in the wood stove, the sky, the bird in the tree outside the window. Peace accompanied this feeling. It even felt like security, like a deep sigh in resting in the universal sacred truth; all is One. Another time, I was floating in the Caribbean Sea watching the sea grasses, the coral reef teaming with life, the schools of tropical fish beneath me. All of us were moving back and forth, rhythmically with the surf, the breath of the planet, like a deep inhale and exhale. The support and connection felt timeless, infinite, right. Life eternal is also a concept until experienced. A super intelligent human being discovered that matter, form, cannot be created nor destroyed whoa—. Think about that for a moment. If Einstein is right, no loved one really leaves! My mom died a couple years ago. I wonder about that idea, “she died.” Did she really? Sometimes I have felt her gentle caress in the wind as it passes over me. After her transition, I was on the land doing projects and a tree caught my eye in the early morning light. It was covered in raindrops, suspended globes of water balls. The sunlight bounced off the tree and illuminated thousands of circular rainbows. I had never seen such a remarkable site! A knowing passed over me that it was mom—saying hello. If everything is energy, and she was more than her body, it was reasonable to me that this energy in the forms I named tree, water, sunlight, was actually her. It felt palpable that she was there with me on the hillside, showing me her light, the light of all that is. The practice of breathing consciously, experiencing the sound and feel of breath happening, like a gifted mantra, helps me to lose my mind and drop into my senses. It’s a beginning in experiencing the gap between the thought stream blocking my connection to the Oneness. In this space between thoughts is where the eternal has been experienced. No wonder the yogi’s bring us to breath again and again. I can only take one conscious breath at a time. The breath happening now is the only one and that is enough for me. The rest is future, imagination, story. I experienced what felt like Oneness in the gaps between thoughts, in the being~ness, the Is~ness that is always available now. As the changing seasons point to the passing of time, I come back to the breath, here and now, to see about experiencing the sacred truth, All is One, the eternal, with the coming and going of breath, seasons, life. It’s a practice. ...Jen Deraspe

Angel Oracle: Illuminating Humanity's Path To Healing An Interview with Stewart Pearce by: Karen M. Rider “High-pitched harmonics entered like lasers of light through the right side of my head, and through my body, searing my heart.” When Stewart Pearce opened his eyes, twelve luminescent orbs floated in mid-air in front of him, and he felt embraced by their supernal Love. A voice sounded in his higher self, naming the orbs as the Angels of Atlantis, and advised Stewart that he would receive a body of knowledge concerning the power of the sound that lies at the core of creation. Stewart was also given the inspiration to create a temple of sound healing known as The Alchemy Of Voice, which is intended to illuminate humanity’s return to wholeness, from disharmony to harmony. And, through harmony, to be shown a way of balancing the free will of Humanity with the immensity of Divine Will.

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

Since receiving this first Angelic Transmission on Glastonbury Tor during the Harmonic Convergence of 1987, Stewart Pearce has progressively brought into creation the Angels’ messages through workshops, books, oracles, recordings, lectures and through his work as a Master of Voice, Sound Healer, Angel Medium and Seer. He has blended this life work with his 30 year career as a world renowned Voice & Performance Coach working with actors, royalty and business persons including Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Vanessa Redgrave, Diana Princess of Wales, Dame Anita Roddick, and the London 2012 Olympic Games Bid. With inspired guidance from the 12 Archangels, Stewart travels the world, teaching the intelligence and compassion of the heart through the breath of the song of the soul. Stewart’s recent book and companion Oracle Deck is The Angels of Atlantis: Twelve Mighty Forces to Transform Your Life Forever.

nervous system of about 40,000 neurons. Scientists at the Fels Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia discovered the heart sends messages to the brain, and has an energy field 5,000 times greater than the brain. Furthermore, within the heart lies a secret chamber whose very walls reverberate with the eternal jewels of love, empathy and compassion. These gems evoke through their teaching, our ability, in fact our power, to heal our lives, and consequently to heal our world. It must be humanity’s utmost conviction to allow the power of our hearts to manage our thoughts and feelings. Karen: Yet, too many of us still choose fear over love, self-interest and competition over collaboration and compassion. Surely, the Angels can inspire us to do better with our free will. Stewart: Those human beings who explore negative behaviors are attempting to expiate their soul’s karma. It’s just that they’ve lost their way, and in a world that is based on choice, they’ve become caught in either individual or collective thought patterns, making it difficult to express who they truly are, which is Love. Karen: What do the Angels communicate about humanity on the cusp of the Aquarian Age? Stewart: As more people learn to radiate Love, through their unique signature note, the planet moves from discord and dis-ease to harmony and healing.

The Angels of Atlantis: Twelve Mighty Forces to Transform Your Life Forever. Karen: In The Angels of Atlantis, you write “humanity is being engaged in an evolutionary impulse of the cosmos... passing through steps to become consciously self-realized divine beings.” Tell me more about this. Stewart: Humanity is moving away from a love of power toward the power of love. This shift awakens consciousness to make a choice, and even though people have a tendency to choose desperation rather than inspiration, in order to change or transform, we are being given an opportunity to change. However, many of our choices are often based in miscreation, and so firstly we become physically and spiritually ill, in order to become invigorated, inspired and intuitive. These conditions when healed herald change, as a movement, back to wholeness. Metaphysically the heart symbolizes life on planet Earth, as blood flows through in a figure of eight, the symbol of infinity. Physiologically, the heart has its own 22 Inner Tapestry Dec 2012/Jan 2013

The Angels come as a communion of twelve in order to make us very aware of being the change we want to see in the world. Their hope for us is that we will live every moment as a pulsation of Love. The Angels’ core teaching is pure love; they espouse the space within us that is Heaven, not Hell. We need to dwell in this Truth. Karen: Stewart, how do you suggest seekers spend their time on 12/21/2012? Stewart: The date, December 21, 2012 has been etched into our consciousness as a day of huge portent on Planet Earth – all people feel this, whatever their circumstance. This is a day when we may join in excited unity, forgetting our differences and remembering the eternal jewels that create a sense of human belonging and interconnectivity. This will connect us to the paramount feelings of life—love, peace, compassion, grace, truth, fairness and honor. On such occasions, my firm belief is that we need to honor the day through an act of ritual – such as gathering at a sacred mountain, lake, tree, waterfall, forest

23 or temple – in mindfulness of its hallowed nature. Standing together, breathing the same air, looking into each others eyes, being present, remaining in the heart, observing the same rhythm, chanting the same song such as OM. All these things and more, animate energy in our psyche that ennobles the essence of our humanity, reminding us that we are much bigger than we first envisaged.

Similarly, my book will possess twelve uniquely illustrated Icons, each one being a specific Angel’s Heart, which are so designed to startle the viewer into receiving the Angels’ immense love, for they love for the sake of love!

Karen: Where will you sing your heart’s note on this momentous day of global consciousness?

New York City: March 8th-9th, Angelic Sound Healing workshop: “Friends In Deed,” 594 Broadway, NYC http://friendsindeed.org

Stewart: I will be on retreat in one of the oldest temples of ancient Egypt, with a large group of spiritual-seekers. This Temple of Luxor is located on an energy vortex known as the throat chakra of the world. What could be more fitting for an Angelic Sound Healer – to be with our mouths open in praise of the divine in all things? “O what is it in me that makes me tremble so at voices?” wrote Walt Whitman.

Connecticut: Booking venues.

Karen: You have a new work emerging in 2013. What can you tell us?

The Alchemy of Voice, The Hearts Note, The Angels of Atlantis Oracle, The Angels of Atlantis: Twelve Mighty Forces to Transform Your Life, http://www.findhornpress.com

Stewart: Yes, my next book, The Hearts of the Angels of Atlantis, follows the emergence of a splendid new Oracle in April 2013. I will make more explicit the Angels of Atlantis work, which emerges at this remarkable time of planetary renaissance. To honor this shifting point within the civilization of Planet Earth, the Angels have gifted us their hearts. They come in the form of Sigils or Glyphs, which are ancient magical symbols. When depicted over the Angel Orb, these symbols set off charges in the human body and spirit, bringing ancient knowledge forth from deep within our cells, and so creating vast changes through the vista of our psyche and soma. Interestingly, each of these twelve Angels are associated with the one of the Atlantean crystal skulls. In turn, these crystal-computers possess harmonics that resonate Angelic Codes, which when spoken strike the ancient chord of a sacred root language of humanity.

Initiation is not for sissies. Once it has it claws embedded in us, it is best to not resist but to ride the dragon. We are led into the unconscious, or underworld, because it is our time and in accordance with an infinite wisdom that wants to deliver what we need so we can live the life we came here to live. In the midst of such occurrences - especially for those among us who have opted to walk on a gentler, spiritual side of life – the road through can feel like a one-way ticket to hell. Suddenly, we look like a high-end automobile that’s been carjacked to a strip shop in some seedy urban shop, stripped of what we think makes us, us. Our egoic parts disassembled and in disarray, we can hardly fathom our own reflection staring back at us in the blinding shine of chrome strewn at our feet. We begin the process of dying to our old selves. The selves that may have been keeping our lives small or fearful and anxious, tied to excesses or addictions that anesthetized us from our goals and purpose, from our dreams.

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

Did I mention that it is best to go willingly, not kicking and screaming, totally counter to any rational thought rambling around our minds? Don’t blame me, its nature’s way. Like keeper currents in a river that pull us down and down before release and oceanic riptides that insist we align and swim with them before we are given a pass to swim out of them, to safety. Coming topside, we find we have been transformed at a soul level. Phew! Now it is time to open up to the heart of our lives.

Living in Flow What is left of our former self, are the essentials. What remains is exactly what we will need for the journey forward. But wait – in the remembering we find that we have been imbued with all sorts of new extras that were not on our original manufacturer’s sticker when we rolled off the assembly line. Our new options are not necessarily in the class of luxury items, such as heated leather seats. Usually we’re leaner, meaner, much faster off the line, and our top end speed is more impressive, along with our “safety features” for self-preservation. Suddenly, we see a bigger picture of who we are and our place in the world. How we are all connected. How what I do affects you and how what you do affects me, and what we all do affects the earth. We have given birth to fierce compassion. All the old limitations that prevented us from trusting in an infinite goodness that guides, protects and blesses our journeys have been burned away. We see the world through a new, high-definition lens. We awaken to a new life. Our day-to-day lives fill with unexpected synchronicities and magic. We begin to breathe differently. We have learned, through the baptism of fire, to live in the flow of who we now understand ourselves to be, with the clarity of consciousness. We re-enter the river with a new level of trust. Like the farmed fish in the movie Trout Fishing in Yemen who defy generations of being bred for the human table but when placed in the river instead, they heed their wild instinct and turn, heading upstream to spawn and continue their species cycle. Something ancient has stirred in us too and awakened our very souls. We align with our destiny. We begin living in flow.

Living Our Own Great Story “Finding the great story that informs your life is a sacred task. To know your story is to know who you are,” writes Carol S. Pearson in Awakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes to Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World. The amazing thing is that once we crack open – or life cracks open – our heart, our real story comes spilling out. All the “stories” – or fears, obstacles and

wounds – that kept us from living our truth recede like a tide. We can go out among the rocks and collect our once buried treasures. Gathering them up gently in our arms, with gratitude and reverence, we take them home. It is these gifts, talents, skills and values that we will use to create the foundation of our new life – a life that was quietly slumbering in us all along. “When we are living our own great story, it may be exhilarating in some ways, but there is also always an ‘of course’ quality to it. It is just ourselves that we are being, so it just feels right… there is no way to be happy except to live out our own deep, great story. No life, no matter how successful and exciting it might be, will make you happy, if it is not really your life. And no life will make you miserable if it is genuinely your own,” says Pearson.

Trust the Path At the conclusion of The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers author Christopher Vogler recounts a panic-inducing experience of being lost solo in the woods near Big Sur, California. Seeking peace of mind and clarity about challenges in his life, he instead found himself lost on a hike – cold, hungry and exhausted as nightfall hovered. Struggling to find his way out and regain his calm enough to connect with his instincts, a voice came to him that said, “Trust the path.” He continued to falter, searching for a path that had been washed away, along with huge sections of hillside, over a stormy winter, leaving no visible path. The voice repeated and he progressed, placing one foot in front of the other. Eventually, he emerged physically unscathed but psychically transformed. The experience was not lost on the writer and he realized that getting lost was a metaphor that not only reflected how he had lost sight of his own life path at the time, but how it also symbolized what is often encountered by artists during the creative process. “As I looked back at the mountains and forest that had just held me in their jaws, I realized I’d been given a gift with that phrase, Trust the Path, and I pass it on to you. It means that when you are lost and confused, you can trust the journey that you have chosen, or that has chosen you. It means others have been on the journey before you, the writer’s journey, the storyteller’s journey. You’re not the first, you’re not the last. Your experience of it is unique, your viewpoint has value, but you’re also part of something, a long tradition that stretches back to the very beginnings of our race. The journey has its own wisdom, the story knows the way. Trust the journey. Trust the story. Trust the path,” said Vogler.

Funny how art imitates life. Resurrected, we resume our life journey with reclaimed wisdom and a new sense of conviction and clarity of purpose. Struggle yields to ease and balance as we get into the swim and natural rhythm of our lives. We move successfully forward in a marriage of soul and ego – soul leading the way, newly attuned to the intimate yearnings of the heart and informed by ego’s navigational acumen. © 2012 Teresa Piccari

Destination Healing A Place of Light An Interview with Susan Gale by Karen M. Rider

“Over the years, we have discovered many intuitive people feel like they are alone, weird, or different from other people,” explains Susan Gale,

Karen: Is intuition or intuitive ability defined differently for the child than for the adult? Susan: Not at all. Another word for being intuitive is being awake. This means one is awake to both worlds, seen and unseen. One can easily walk in both worlds in balance and harmony. I would imagine that a person who has closed off his/her intuitive abilities sees just a human figure when looking at another person. Oftentimes, an intuitive person pays little attention to the physical characteristics—they are so unimportant! An intuitive child or adult may do one or more, if not all, of the following: • sense the energy around that person, in color or not, • feel the emotions coming off that person, • hear the thoughts of that person, • get a flash of recognition if the person was known from a past life • know the past events that have shaped the person • see outcomes of present situations • see medical problems Depending on the extent of their abilities and the way they are parented, a child can lose that connection by the time they are 3 or 4 years old. Those who are very talented seldom lose all connections, in spite of the best efforts of some parents. Most people do not like to talk about these things because it is unsettling to those who are asleep! There simply are no secrets to those who are awake. Being intuitive is a huge responsibility. Karen: Many parents and other adults are fearful when a child speaks about seeing spirit people or “knowing things.” Susan: Fear, in my experience, is rooted in a lack of understanding of what spirit people, and knowledge from the spirit world, are about. Also, deriving information from Hollywood representations doesn’t help. We focus on helping people acquire knowledge and understanding in place of fear. There is no need for fear.

Susan: I do not think they ever are imaginary. Usually, young children will use their dolls or stuffed animals for make-believe play. Developmentally, young children are very concrete in their perceptions of the world. It is important for the adults around the child to honor his/her perceptions. For example, my sister set an extra place at the table for Christine, who was my niece’s spirit friend, until my niece was about 9 or 10 years old. At that point, Christine no longer came around because my niece became too old to play with. If a child is having difficulties distinguishing between who is in spirit and who is in the physical, then they need guidance from someone who can help them gain the skills necessary to walk in balance. The primary observation parents want to make is if there is balance between the worlds. If a child is lost in other people’s emotions and becomes erratic, then skills in handling being an empath are necessary. We provide this kind of guidance at A Place of Light. Karen: At what age is it appropriate to talk with children about intuition? Susan: To me, intuition is not a “talking” point. It is of the spiritual heart, not the mind. By acknowledging and honoring the child’s awareness, we are off to a good start. We need to approach our interactions with the perspective that every child already has within them a complete understanding, on a spiritual level, of all that is going on around them. Also, keep in mind that psychological development often lacks maturity and wisdom, which comes with time and experience. Children are generally on two tracks, the spiritual and the physical. It is the parents› job to keep them aligned. Societal influences, however, can make parents fearful of what they do not understand about their child’s experience. This is where both Soulful Parenting and the programs at A Place of Light can help people awaken to that which they have forgotten or misunderstand. Many people think we develop spiritual abilities, but it is the reverse. We are a spiritual being visiting a physical body. It can be a difficult dance at times! Karen: What inspired you to write Soulful Parenting? Susan: Soulful Parenting is a collection of my knowledge of children, both developmentally and spiritually, that I have gained throughout my life experience and my professional work in education. If I had to say I was inspired, it was by the need for children to be raised in an authentic way. This book represents the ways I have run all my programs and raised my two sons. It begins with conception and goes through adolescence. owner of A Place of Light in Cherry Valley, MA. Since opening its doors, A Place of Light has become a haven for people who are aware of their intuitive gifts and those who are just curious about “psychic stuff.” “Our programs serve young people, older people, teens, families, single parents, priests, social workers and others in the counseling professions,” says Susan. “We have had people as young as 9 months old give healings and as old as 70 come to their first understanding of their intuitive abilities. Our participants study in gatherings, receive healing and spiritual guidance.” Before Susan began founding A Place of Light, she taught in public schools and completed a master’s in special education including qualifications for school and district administrator. She later owned a children’s center certified for teaching pre-K through grade 12. A student of the Cayce Readings and of Navajo spiritual traditions, Susan recognized a missing element in understanding the whole child—beyond the physical, social, intellectual and emotional components of development. Her work at A Place of Light as well as her book Soulful Parenting, is intended to help families and any others who work with young people, to recognize, honor and nurture a child’s intuitive abilities. In this interview, Susan shares how parents and other adults can set aside their own doubts and awaken to the spiritual gifts of the children in their life.

Karen: Are a child ’s imaginary friends ever just that—a playful re-enactment of their daily interactions with make-believe friends?

An Astrological Forecast for Aquarian Age Consciousness December/January 2012/2013 Even though the intensely powerful November planetary aspects have just passed, we are still in the middle of a huge transformational time period as we enter December, 2012. Of course toward the end of December, on the 21st of December, the Mayan Calendar ends, an old world according to Mayan belief terminates and a New World is born.

On December 21, 2012 at 6:12 AM EST there is the Winter Solstice, when dark minutes of the day are at their strongest of the year. Yin and inward energies are in control of our psyches, and the Sun is now in Capricorn, so sadness and sober recognition of life’s downturns, trials and tribulations fill the “air.” But this is also the end of a 5,125-year Long Count cycle according to Mayan tradition, and as such would be a major turning point for humanity and for each of our individual lives. According to that tradition, the 4th World ends and the 5th World begins. Some Mayan elders have predicted 3 days of complete darkness surrounding this date. Many speak of a great opening at this time into a more compassionate and loving consciousness.

Of course, no one really knows for sure what that will mean exactly, as we have no real frame of reference to guide us. But I do know that astrologically we are in the middle of a tremendous transformational period, which will last several years, and more than rival the ‘60s and ‘70s revolution and evolution of consciousness. The world as we know it, in so many ways, is leaving, and whatever has happened in November 2012 and continues in December 2012 shows a major turning point for our individual and collective soul journeys on Planet Earth.

This is the first New Moon after the eclipses and it will bring new action based on what happened during November and early December. In the greater world, revolutionary change is powerful now, and people are wanting to break the shackles of whatever holds them back from freedom.

No matter what you believe

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

November brought us an important presidential election, 2 eclipses, and a trigger to the Uranus/Pluto square. The power of those events is certainly spilling over into December and the end of the important year 2012. In fact the Lunar Eclipse Full Moon in Gemini on November 28 was only 3 days ago, as December begins, so we are very much still within its influence. Change is moving us to let go and release what needs to die, and opening up doorways into new phases of our lives. Mercury went direct a few days ago, and clear mental skies are wanting to form, though the potential chaos from the recent eclipses may cloud our vision for a while longer.

or what truly happens,

this is a fine time for meditation, reflection, ceremony and a deep connection with your personal source...

DECEMBER December 2nd shows a potential upliftment as a Sun opposite Jupiter aspect brings with it inspiration or renewed faith or an “aha” moment. December 6th brings a last quarter waning Moon in Virgo, a time to come down to reality, and focus on what needs to be fixed or simplified. The next week, from December 6th-13th, is best for coming down from whatever changes occurred over the last month or so, do some healing, and prepare for a strong New Moon in Sagittarius next week. On or just after December 13 we get a renewed burst of energy forward. There is a New Moon in Sagittarius and revolutionary awakener Uranus goes direct, also on the 13th. The New Moon in Sagittarius is at 3:42 AM EST and Uranus goes direct only a few hours afterwards. This begins a lunar cycle that takes us through the Mayan End date on the Winter Solstice, and through Christmas. It ends at the next New Moon, in Capricorn, on December 28th. The combination of Great Awakener Uranus with fiery Sagittarius promises an energized new beginning at this New Moon. Sagittarius is a seeker and seeks to find understanding, inspiration, solutions, meaning, and higher knowledge. Its’ process to find these things is through spirited upliftment and an often great leap into a new venture or adventure. It runs on intuition, and has a “knowing” that is not always logical. It does seem to avoid “reality” sometimes, and needs faith when things don’t turn out as expected. In that way Sagittarius can be like a bright, warm fire on a cold dark night. So use this Sagittarius New Moon and Uranus Direct to break out, awaken, and get started into something that will set you free and liberate your free spirit. And maybe you will look before you leap, and maybe not. 28 Inner Tapestry Dec 2012/Jan 2013

No matter what you believe or what truly happens, this is a fine time for meditation, reflection, ceremony, and a deep connection with your personal source, your guides and gods, and the greater Universe. Jupiter and Saturn are making close aspect to Pluto now also, and this a time of destruction of old dysfunctional patterns and deep transformation. On December 25th, Christmas for Christians, Mars leaves regimented Capricorn for socially conscious rogue Aquarius. The Sun squares Uranus this day also, so people may be in moods that are more contrary and rebellious than usual. On the 26th Saturn sextiles Pluto and the general feeling is deeply serious surrounding this date.

On the 28th there is a Full Moon in Capricorn/Cancer. Capricorn is the archetypal great father energy, which is serious and strict, but with integrity guides us through the trials and tribulations of the outer world, with worldly wisdom. We are shown how best to navigate accomplishment and career. Cancer is the archetypal great mother energy, which shows us more unconditional support for our being and expressing our natural self. Cancer guides our inner journey and shows us soul values of care and empathy and protects us from the harshness of life. It focuses on family and domestic life. At this Full Moon, which is at 5:21 AM EST, we work to balance both our domestic, family and soul concerns with our public, career, and “getting it together” in our life concerns. What both Cancer and Capricorn have in common is that they both are protective and cautious, each in their own individual way. Of course the Gregorian Calendar shows us a New Year 2013 on January 1st. 2013 will be another big year for healing and transformation, especially so because Uranus and Pluto, the instigators of the ‘60s revolution, make their first major contact with each other since then. Saturn will also be sextile to Pluto much of this coming year, aiding in the process of deep, at the core transformation. The world as we know will never be the same, with an old age and paradigm dying and a new Aquarian Age being born. These years 2012-2015 will be big years of change, and here in America from now until April 2014 is especially important. That is because the Uranus/Pluto square will be exact that month and making a Cardinal Grand Cross formation with Mars and Jupiter. This grand cross will make almost exact aspect with the USA natal Sun placement for July 4th 1776 of 13+ degrees of Cancer. The United States is on the verge of its biggest transformation in its history. So each of us will be supported in our individual healing and transformation journey, so our consciousness and lives can be aligned with the changes coming to our country and world on the way to an Aquarian Age.

29 January 11th brings the first new moon of 2013, a New Moon in Capricorn at 2:45 PM EST. Capricorn lets us know it is time to face up to what we need to do, and to concentrate more on our discipline, organization, planning, building and accomplishing, and to let nothing get in the way. On January 19th the Sun moves into Aquarius, to bring us beyond our personal ego needs and more into social consciousness. Groups and community, social networking, inventive ideas, and being true to our very distinctive individuality is aligned with this coming month ahead. On January 26th there is a Full Moon in Aquarius/Leo at 11:39 PM EST. The glow in the air of our psyches opens us to balancing our social consciousness (Aquarius) with our needs to be happy, have fun and be creative (Leo). January finishes with an uplifting and inspirational Jupiter going Direct on January 30th. This signifies a time to contemplate new adventures and travels, and a renewed faith in life and spirit.

by Heidi Lively s a Shamanic Healer, it is a joy to see my clients connect with their spirit helpers and gain insight. One of the most profound areas of healing is around past lives.

Many of my clients are surprised when their guides give them insight into a past life by showing me their current pet – be it a dog, cat, bird, etc. Some clients react with “I just knew it! There was something in his eyes the first time I saw him. He looked so familiar!” And for most of us, “instant recognition” is a vital clue to a past life connection. Eyes are usually the clearest indicator, but memories can resurface in other ways – such as what your pet likes to eat, how he sleeps, or with what she likes to play. Some pets can come into our lives and usher in what is call a “Pastlife bleed through.” This is usually when we reach the age in this lifetime when something profound happened at the same age in a past life. The memories of that past life coming flooding back in the forms of vivid daydreams, sleeping dreams, or even the desire to draw images from a past life. Sometimes these memories can be healing – offering us answers to issues with which we currently struggle. I have known some people who do not even believe in reincarnation, but the past life memories come in so strong they cannot ignore it.

Understanding past lives you have had with a pet can also offer suggestions to training issues you might be having with a pet. For example, you might have a dog that repeatedly jumps in a lake when hiking and you try very hard to train him to not do so. Further work with your spirit guides could reveal that your dog had a past life where he escaped by jumping into a body of water and that pattern of behavior is familiar and safe to him. (Of course, it could also be centuries of breed training to hunt water fowl). One of the hardest aspects of our relationships with our pets is when we have to say goodbye. Often the grief is more manageable if people know that they have shared lives before, and can request to share lives again. In these cases, I often remind people that Death can’t stop love, and the love between human and animal can still flow and be felt even after our furry kids have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Change The World Before Bedtime By: Mark Kimball Moulton, Josh Chalmers & Karen Good ISBN: 978-0764342387 Publisher: Schiffer

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

If you want to send your child to bed with good deeds on their mind, then Change the World Before Bedtime is the book to read with your child. Written with upbeat rhyme, the story shows how ordinary boys and girls can do little things each day to help change the world in a big way. A simple smile can begin a new friendship. A kind word can lift someone’s spirits. Children (and parents, too) will be inspired to act in simple ways to make the world a brighter place: lending a helping hand to clean a mess, keep healthy and fit, and cooperating with others to create “big miracles” are just a few of the messages shared in this delightful book. These important messages are shared through 18 vibrant illustrations of “little people” doing big, wonderful deeds. Ideal for kids ages 4 through 8, Change the World before Bedtime is a book that can be read many times, each time encouraging the child to think about moments in their life when they have acted (or could act) with love and compassion toward themselves, other people and their Earth. Angelina: I really liked the pictures in this book. The artists made pictures of ordinary kids from different kinds of families—kids with different hair and faces

and clothes. This teaches me that everyone, no matter where they come from, can do things that make them super heroes! There are lots of really pretty and bright colors in the book and that makes it fun to look at. My favorite parts of this book were the pages that remind me about eating healthy and taking care of the Earth (the Earth needs good food, water and sunshine and people to care for it). And, I liked the part about bringing cupcakes to a sick friend. Cupcakes are yummy and fun to share! After reading the book, my Mom asked me about ways that I help people or do other good deeds. I said, “Well, when my clothes don’t fit me anymore, we bring them to the children’s home.” My Mom also asked me if I had any special powers that I could use to help make the world a better place, at home or school. I said I should probably use my “listening ears” more; that’s a special power my Mom really likes me to use!

Freelance writer Karen M. Rider has published reviews, essays and articles on holistic health and conscious parenting with print and digital magazines. Angelina has co-authored two book reviews with Mom. She would like to write"adventure stories about a magical princess who uses girl powers to defeat an evil wizard."

“There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ...Albert Einstein This quote came to mind when I started reading this true story of a woman who drowned in a kayaking accident when her boat became wedged in the rocks under a waterfall and her body was pinned inside the boat. Dr. Neal’s body was eventually freed from the boat and her spirit watched from above as the rescue team tried to revive her. During this time, she was literally being pulled between two worlds—heaven and earth, and eventually was told that her earthly work was not done and her spirit needed to return to her physical body. During the early days of her recovery in the hospital, Mary was again visited and given spiritual insights by angels and someone she identified as Jesus. After 6 months of rehabilitation, she was able to return to her busy professional and personal life as a mother of 4. the fascinating details of this life changing experience. The reason I recommend this book so highly is that the author was in many ways living an ordinary life before the transformational experience of her accident. Her intimate encounter with death and God gave her the vision to reflect back on the many “coincidences” of her life through the eyes of faith – where perceptions shifted and everything became a miracle for her. This book leaves no room for doubt. The story is compelling and joyful in its message of hope. I highly recommend it for anyone who doubts that there is life after death!

Balance: A Master Biomorphic Geometric Card Developed by: Aaron and Sue Singletown, Co-founders of The Way To Balance, LLC ISBN: 978-834-0341 www.TheWayToBalance.com

I am always interested in products that support the people in the engaging of their own healing/awakening/becoming process. Unfortunately, many have the best of Intension, but miss the mark. The Way To Balance Biomorphic Balance Card is all it was created to be. This card is amazing. It is only as limited as your willingness to explore, in a grounded way, and experience yourself and your own healing potential beyond how you have experienced it before. Before I share my experience I’m going to share with you some technical info, from the card manual, about the card and how it does what it does. Biomorphic Geometry (BMG) is a groundbreaking new science and technology that enables a person to experience a shift within his or her conscious mind, unconscious mind, and body. This is because our human bodies - all the way down to the level of our DNA - can read and respond to the energy frequencies created by the Biomorphic Geometry (BMG) Design Cards.

This new science of Biomorphic Geometry, and the specific BMG Designs that the Singletons have created, enable a person to experience a shift within his or her conscious mind, unconscious mind, and body. This again, is because our human bodies, all the way down to the level of our DNA, can “read” and respond to the energy frequencies created by the Biomorphic Geometry (BMG) Design Cards. Each unique BMG Design Card is developed to create a resonating morphic field that identifies imbalances in your DNA, brain, body and bioplasmic field, and creates an opportunity for you to correct the imbalance and release. For example, if you carry interference or a blockage to “Peace”, it will draw your attention (unconsciously or consciously) to the area of interference or blockage, giving you the opportunity to acknowledge and release it. The Biomorphic Geometry field is comparable to a radio wave that carries information. The frequencies of the fields are created by patterns, shapes, numbers, etc. and their relationship to each other. These card have broad applications in the fields of psychology, psychotherapy, bodywork, energy healing, hypnotherapy, guided imagery, dowsing, kinesiology, intuitive development, and more. Why is it called Biomorphic Geometry? Bio, as in biology: Of, relating to, caused by, or affecting life or living organisms. Morphic: Able to transform or to be transformed completely in appearance or character. Morphic also means morphic resonance, the concept that through a telepathic effect (morphic field), information can be transferred to an organism through a sympathetic vibration. Geometry: The mathematics of the properties, measurements, and relationships of numbers, points, lines, angles, surfaces, solids, and higher dimensional representations. Thus, Biomorphic Geometry uses the frequencies of sets of shapes and forms designed to create unique morphic fields that initiate transformational change within living organisms. The BMG Design Cards create frequencies that “light up” the conscious and unconscious areas within the body that block a person from experiencing a specific state of being. It is not important that you feel, see or “know” anything at all when using the cards. The body, unconscious or conscious mind, DNA and bioplasmic field all read the resonating biomorphic field emitted by the card. The frequencies in the cards allow for the shift to take place by your simple

The dimensions of each design are critical to the accuracy of the BMG Design Cards and their ability to influence the body, brain, DNA and bioplasmic field. Therefore, some designs do not completely fill the card space. I have been playing with the card for more than a month now, and it has been a joy. This card offers an almost limitless opportunity to support not only a practitioner but it is a great overall tool for self support on your journey to health and wholeness. By itself, the card is easy to use, just place it with the configuration side facing the body, anywhere on the body, and just rest into what the card is transmitting. Another option is to place the card, with the configuration side facing you, up to six feet away, and sit, with any part of your body facing the card, rest and receive. If that is all you do, if not immediately but gradually with use, you will notice changes beginning to present. Because each life form is innately drawn to wholeness, when you use this card, your being will “know” what to do and how to respond to the frequency the card is creating. It’s that simple. Now add to this, using the card's frequency as a carrier wave to bring into the body other frequency generating or emanating items to accentuate the healing process... now, you can truly begin to play with your intuition. For example using essential oils, minerals, crystals, light and sound waves, high quality food supplements... the list is as expansive as you are willing to experience. This opens a new universe of experience and can help dissolve the limitations you may hold within the mind of what is and is not possible. I have used all of what I just listed either separately or in various combinations during a treatment session and the influence and outcome have been wonderful to experience. I’ve observed the ease of change within all systems of the person. There is less stress and strain on the body, emotional field, and the bioplasmic field - everything releases, moves and balances with greater ease. While using the card(s) (did I forget to mention you can use more than one card at a time, hmmm?!) I find it creates a greater state of ease for change. You can also introduce into the DNA, body and bioplasmic field forgotten or limited frequencies, which are innately, part of who we are. For example, Love and Compassion, Grace, Abundance, and Gratitude. You could also introduce “I Am Willing to release the cause of...” and “I Am...” intentions that will further expand an offering of release, reception, and acknowledgement of... the list goes on. If you can feel it and create an intent/focus you can use this card to facilitate its introduction into the being. What I have found very helpful with our practice is the use of this card for our clients for home use. It is SO VERY simple to use that ANYONE can use it for their own growth and healing. I have offered this to clients with noticeable changes between sessions. It not only provides an opportunity for clearing, healing and growth, it offers them an opportunity to expand and deepen their intuitive nature. With practice and a willingness people begin to feel more stable within their own ability to trust and have faith in what they are feeling within themselves and their environment. You can also use it with children, pets and plants... any living being. Just face the card in their direction while they are at rest and they will receive the benefits of healing and harmonizing their beings. I just began using it with our dogs Kadi and Louie for anxiety. After the first use I noticed a marked change. It is that simple. As you have read this is quite an expansive tool. If you are looking for a truly effective, expansive, and functional tool for deepening your health and wellbeing this is a worthwhile investment in money and time. It will repay you daily beyond your mind's ability to understand.

e xp l o r i ng t h e w o r l d rel igions An Inclusive Rather Than Exclusive Spirituality: Kirpal Singh and the Lesson of Nag Hammadi by James Bean

"The great Seth wrote this book… He placed it in the mountain that is called "Charaxio," in order that, at the end of the times and the eras… it may come forth and reveal... the great, invisible, eternal Spirit… The Gospel of the Egyptians. The God-written, holy, secret book." (Gospel of the Egyptians, The Nag Hammadi Library) In December 1945 a collection of ancient scriptures – fifty-two books – was unearthed near the village of Nag Hammadi in Egypt. These texts had been placed in a clay storage jar, sealed, and buried sometime during the Fourth Century AD. Monks who lived at a nearby monastery founded by Saint Pachomius most likely hid them there at the time. They would have been sacred texts once part of the library of this monastic community, one of several Pachomian monasteries operating in Egypt. “The god of time (illusion) has put a cover over the teachings of Saints and thus concealed them from humanity.” (Swami Ji Maharaj) Rather than confining themselves to only reading the Old and New Testaments or teachings exclusively from Orthodox Christian sources, these monks had a surprisingly diverse collection of writings that can only be characterized as inter-faith and multi-tradition. In other words, they were also studying the scriptures of other religions and mystical movements of their day. The papyrus codices of the Nag Hammadi scriptures includes Christian texts such as the Gospel of Thomas, a collection of the earliest known sayings of Jesus, Dialogue of the Saviour, Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the Book of Thomas the Spiritual Athlete, Teachings of Silvanus, and Apocalypse of James (Parts I & II). There are also many examples of mystical or Gnostic Jewish texts. Perhaps the oldest book of the Nag Hammadi Library, Eugnostos the Blessed, is one of many that originate with a sect known as the Sethians, who practiced a somewhat Kabbalah-like form of Jewish mysticism. Several important Nag Hammadi books are part of the Corpus Hermeticum, sacred texts of the Hermetic tradition, an esoteric religious and philosophical mystery school or school of spirituality based in Egypt attributed to Hermes Trismegistus (“Thrice-Greatest Hermes”). These include: The Discourse on the Eighth and Ninth Heavens or Planes, Asclepius, and The Vegetarian Prayer of Thanksgiving. Scholars have noticed there is a strong influence of Neoplatonism, a mystical philosophy based on the teachings of Plato, present in many of the Nag Hammadi texts and Gnostic gospels. Both the Corpus Hermeticum and Nag Hammadi Library refer to India on a couple of occasions, and one Nag Hammadi book by the name of Zostrianos mentions the Persian Prophet Zoroaster. The books of Nag Hammadi are in the Coptic language and are copied by monks from much earlier Greek manuscripts. Some of the writings seem to originate in Syria, just north of Israel, including the Gospel of Thomas (Sayings of Jesus) and Book of Mar Sanes. The Sentences of Sextus is a Pythagorean text, a collection of proverbs popular with many during the early centuries C.E.. The Pythagoreans were, as the name suggests, followers of Pythagoras, a sect that believed in a fascinating combination

of mathematics and mystical beliefs and practices including reincarnation, transmigration of the soul, and hearing the Music of the Spheres, the Harmony of All Harmonies. They also adhered to a vegetarian diet. In fact, for most of the last two thousand years in the western world the word “vegetarian” has been synonymous with “Pythagorean,” such was their influence on Pagan, Jewish, and Christian traditions. Vegetarians have been referred to as “Pythagoreans” up until recently, when the word “vegetarian” became fairly popular. Some of the scriptures of Nag Hammadi are from a moderate, more mainstream Gnostic Christian movement called the Valentinians, founded by Saint Valentinus of Alexandria. Many suspect that many of the Pachomian monks had been followers of Valentinus and brought their scriptures with them when they joined the monastery near Nag Hammadi. From the point of view of the monks contemplating the words of these scriptures, their interest was not a schizophrenic or contradictory eclectic spirituality. All these writings do have much in common. They have common themes and threads, a universal wisdom that transcends narrow religious sectarian boundaries, a rich treasure-trove of spirituality. What a fascinating Eastern version of Christianity these people had, “a faith once entrusted to the Saints”. (Book of Jude) “Wisdom leads the soul to the place of God.” (The Sentences of Sextus, Nag Hammadi Library) The Lesson of Nag Hammadi These codices or scriptures of Nag Hammadi were buried after Bishop Athanasius condemned the use of non-canonical books in his infamous Festal Letter of 367 AD. As a new conservative sectarian hardline leadership, with its lists of “approved” and “banned” books, imposed itself upon the monastic communities of Egypt, it is believed that some monks took these forbidden books from the monastic library and hid them away, thus rescuing them from certain destruction, and this freespirited act ended up preserving them for future generations. Now, this collection of the sayings of Jesus known as the Gospel of Thomas, rather than being the victim of censorship and the book-burning hysteria of the Fourth Century, has its own website. The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, illustrating the leadership role of women during the early days of Christianity, instead of being forever wiped from the pages of history, is now the subject of great interest by many open-minded spiritual seekers around the world. “The tyrant will not be able to take away happiness.” (The Sentences of Sextus, Nag Hammadi Library) “And there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed. There is nothing buried that will not be raised!” (Gospel of Thomas) Planetary Lobotomy The loss of the Nag Hammadi Library and the destruction of the Library of Alexandria represent two spectacular examples of "Planetary Lobotomy," the unrestrained wanton destruction of the knowledge of humanity. At least in the case of Nag Hammadi, a large percentage of the texts have been restored to us. Beware of today’s “Athanasius types.” The spirit of Athanasius lives on in each generation, seeking to take freedoms away, seeking to blow up statues of Buddhas and Saints, forbidding the study of “unauthorized” spiritual wisdom – deliberately causing books to go out of print, causing trouble for many seeking souls, ever thinking up new rules and regulations. The results of the imposition of over-reaching rule-making, control and censorship in spiritual organizations, despite the usual good intentions that are advertised, ultimately leads to the loss of knowledge and wisdom of the Masters, the dumbing down of a tradition. “The Pharisees and the scholars have taken the keys of knowledge and have hidden them. They have not entered nor have they allowed those who want to enter to do so. As for you, be as sly as snakes and as simple as doves.” (Gospel of Thomas)

There are the great world religions: Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, the Bahai Faith, Aboriginal/Indigenous/Native American/Sami People, etc. In addition to comparative religion there is also comparative mysticism, the study of various schools of spirituality or mystics that are, or once were, operating within many of these above-mentioned faith communities, East and West. Viewing religions through this particular “lens,” one’s list may include: Kabbalah, Gnosticism (Valentinians, Barbeloites, Nassenes, Manichaeans, Cathers, Bogomils), Hesychasm (Eastern Orthodox mysticism), Syriac and other forms of Monasticism, Quietism, the Beguines, Gottesfreunde or Friends of God, to name a few in the Christian category, Sufism, numerous lineages of Saints, Sant Satgurus and Bhaktas based in India.

They sent a letter to say he was gone A German soldier somewhere in a dark wood with serpents on his boots had blown him out of the sky and I felt the death inside me as I held his dark cheek in the curve of my hand as I kissed him goodbye in my mind I sensed forever the splitting of flesh asunder and I wanted free to follow him where he had gone he promised me he would return and an old woman with rings on every finger told me he is here and I feel him in my belly and I remember the touch of his spirit the singing of our song together in heaven, so called because we were together and he promised he would find me by my heart he'd know me by the surging in his body as his soul completed mine it is a promise made where time is not figured and bodies are not needed for communing is eternal and love is closely tied copyright, 2008, Sue Reed

36 Inner Tapestry Dec 2012/Jan 2013

As I’ve written in the past, "there is no permanent Institution or University of Mysticism, but a decline-renewal process, a continuous pattern of Masters... making a fresh start in new locations, remaining free to exist in genuineness and authenticity without a hierarchy of scribes and an ever-growing caste of Pharisees running the show, surrounding the Master, blocking him from our view. Let’s just stick with hanging out with the Master around the Bodhi or Banyen Tree of simplicity. The true Masters do spend time with their disciples. Personal interviews? You bet. Make every effort to enjoy their company whenever you can during this lifetime, while both you and they are in the body." The Master says, “What your own eyes cannot see, your human ears do not hear, your physical hands cannot feel, and what is inconceivable to the human mind – that I will give you!” (The Gospel of Thomas – Wisdom of the Twin, Lynn Bauman White Cloud Press). Administrative religious councils have been at war with enlightened souls since the beginning of time, and ultimately seek to retire and replace living Masters altogether. I remain suspicious of the institutionalization process, the thirst and eagerness on the part of some to building ever-larger buildings, creating new committees and councils for themselves to rule over. Only mystics care about mysticism. “Do not lay down any rule beyond what I ordained for you, nor promulgate law like the lawgiver, or else it will dominate you.” (Yeshua, Gospel of Mary Magdalene) The Example of Master Kirpal Singh (1894–1974) The spiritual Master from India, Sant Kirpal Singh, advised his students to follow a satsang template that included a long reading list of potential scriptures and sources of inspiration or instruction: “For the subject of a talk, we may take up the hymns from any scripture, preferably from the Masters of the Sound Current. It may be supplemented by apt quotations from the parallel writings of other Master Saints. The Holy Gospels themselves are full of such material as may fit in with such a context. The illustrations from various Masters are essential so as to bring out the essential unity in the teachings of all the Saints.” (Instructions For Holding Satsang, by Sant Kirpal Singh) “To fill the human heart with compassion, mercy and universal love, which should radiate to all countries, nations and peoples of the world. To make a true religion of the heart as the ruling factor in one’s life. To enable each one to love God, love all, serve all, and have respect for all, as God is immanent in all forms. My goal is that of oneness. I spread the message of oneness in life and living. This is the way to peace on earth. This is the mission of my life, and I pray that it may be fulfilled.” (Kirpal Singh) Kirpal Singh was a prolific writer, publishing scores of books over the years, quoting from most every world scripture, mystic, poet, philosopher, and great Master that has ever existed spanning the centuries, very much embodying this same curiosity and inclusive universal spirituality we find present in the Nag Hammadi Library of Egypt. May the legacy of both always be remembered and honored for all time to come.

James Bean explores the world of spirituality, comparative religion, Sant Mat Mysticism and Inner Light & Sound Meditation via Spiritual Awakening Radio as well as satsangs (meetings) around Maine. Address questions or comments to MeditationForBeginners@gmail.com (207) 358-9381.

T

When the card of the Chariot is pulled from the deck we can ask ourselves these questions: 1. What energies must I harness to face whatever comes my way? 2. How can I control my instincts to keep myself centered regarding the future? The final card that I drew from the deck was the card of The Sun. I breathed in a sigh of relief when I saw this card. As many of you know it is the most favorable of the deck for indicating that all would be well in the next year. There would be a re-birth of light, optimism, and a fresh start “a resurrection” of sorts. Notice how the child on the white horse rides sans a saddle with perfect balance. There is vegetation, the sunflowers in the background, and joy in the newness of being once again in the “garden” of life. When one pulls The Sun card out of the deck you can ask these questions: 1. Where do I experience joy and love? 2. What lights up my world? In the Bible there is a quote in Ecclesiastes 3:1 “to everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die.” There is no need to fear death, as it is a resurrection of the soul to its natural state of pure energy. We can all rejoice in the knowledge that there is no true death and that every time the seasons change we are graced with the knowledge that we are indeed blessed here on earth. he winter solstice (December 21, 2012) marks the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours for those living south of the equator, and many prophecies about the end of the world have surrounded this date as it corresponds with the last day of the Mayan calendar in 2012. It is an eerie coincidence, although I personally have not felt that this date should be feared in any way. As always, I was curious as to what the tarot would say about the subject. The specific question that I asked my cards was if there was anything to fear surrounding this topic of, death and resurrection, or this date in December? The answer that the cards gave was both insightful, and more importantly reassuring. I pulled the card of Judgment from the deck. This beautiful card has the image of an angel lifting its trumpet to the heavens, and people young and old heralding in a new day with the sun shining in the background. I interpreted this card in two ways. The longest day of the year, the solstice, forges a new beginning as the sun regains its power in the sky. Also, if every ending is only a new beginning then there is never any reason to fear, and if there is an ending there is no judgment! The cards were affirming what I believe to be true and were reassuring that all would be well. When the card of Judgment is pulled from the deck on this topic we can ask ourselves two questions: 1. What needs to be recovered or resurrected in my life?” 2. How can I recognize my calling as a spiritual being having a human experience? I asked in earnest of the Tarot, what other wisdom should I take on this topic of endings and new beginnings? This time I got the card of The Chariot. The Chariot spoke to me of the soul’s desire to evolve and move forward. Whether that forward motion speaks of the transmutation of our energy from the incarnate (life) to the dis-incarnate (death), or not, is up to our own interpretation. In its simplest form, the Chariot, which is under the influence of the number seven, speaks to a “breakthrough” in consciousness and the ability to see old things in exciting new forms. Just as death is a transformation of our physical existence into one of spiritual existence, The Chariot moves us into the new resurrection of our being! No matter what happens, we will make progress on our spiritual journey.

Live From Your Center Mark Nakell, LCPC Awareness-based Psychotherapy Growth and Self-Realization Individual & Couples Counseling All of life happens in the present moment: Our natural condition is an

open awareness of each moment as it occurs. Increased awareness of this moment—now—and of yourself in the moment, provides an increased experience of life, more joy, and greater fulfillment. Developing the capacity of your own center enables a deeper, more immediate experience of your aliveness and presence now. The result is increased freedom—freedom of choice, freedom of action, freedom of purpose—and deepened participation in the events of your own life. For a FREE introductory session, call (207) 773-4413 or email mark@marknakellcounseling.com, 25 Middle Street, Portland, ME 04101. In-depth further information about how I work (and an ongoing blog on therapy topics) can be found at www.marknakellcounseling.com. What is somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is a self-awareness process with a particular focus on the body. With guided practice to help you remain present in the body, you simply allow thoughts, emotions and sensations to emerge in their natural patterns. This combination – conscious awareness and observation of patterns – allows both increased capability of self-regulation and expanded capacity for awareness itself. Current brain research shows that the part of the brain involved in awareness also regulates emotions and behavior. So practice Douglas Smith of focused awareness actually strengthens and expands the brain cell connections in this area, making the benefit of this work cumulative. The difference between this and mindfulness practice alone is that you also have access to somatic, or body reactions. These come under conscious awareness, creating the possibility of physical as well as emotional healing. Somatic therapy is useful for the resolution of stress and trauma, anxiety, depression, habits, addictions, "stuck" patterns, or can be used to enhance personal growth. For an appointment or more information please call, email or visit me on the web at www.mindmeetsbody.com. SoulMoves: Anna Abaldo, M.A. Family Constellations, 5Rhythms & Authentic Movement Individual & Relationship Counseling Since 1995, I’ve worked as a psychotherapist and workshop facilitator – in Europe, Aruba, & Maine. Visit www.soulmovesME.com for current offerings.

Family Constellations provide a powerful, immediate entry into our family dynamics on an energetic and soul level – without needing to bring your partner or family. Setting up a family constellation allows hidden tensions, conflicts and influential relationships within a family to become visible. What was buried is brought to light. We can then work with these dynamics, and often solutions can be found, releasing and shifting the unconscious energy that was stuck and pointing to new ways for you to be within your family system so love can flow again. I have seen this work greatly benefit people working through childhood trauma, issues of alcoholism, unprocessed grief, abandonment, separation from loved ones, challenging parenting situations, and difficult transitions. After participating in a family constellation, people often experience a heightened insight, a greater level of compassion, more connectedness and belonging, and peace with what is.

Are You Listening? Through the challenges of our lives

Holistic Manual Therapy Did you know that your body is your autobiography?

Anything that has occurred in one’s life that was traumatic at some level (physical, emotional, energetic, etc.) and hasn’t been embraced and cared for is still there, even if it happened many years ago. Through gentle touch and palpation, areas of your body and energetic being that are holding tightness about present and/or past injuries/traumas are offered an invitation to begin to heal and “dance” again via techniques such as muscle energy technique, myofascial release, cranial-sacral, sound healing and much more. The most important part of this healing process is inviting the person to further expand their caring relationship with themselves, to truly make time for themselves in their own life. You can change your life and your body is trying to help you.

we are being asked to release what no longer serves us; to expand, living with an open mind and heart. Are You Willing? To embody the Truth of living your life as love in action. Ron and Joan support people to live the highest/greatest vision of themselves. Living Visions is a method of support that deepens levels of calm and joy, releasing the causes of emotional and physical trauma, which increases awareness of your true center and grounding. Living Visions is a way of realizing perfect union with one's self. If you are interested in exploring how we may be able to support you please visit www.ronandjoan.com, or call us at (203) 779-0345 with questions or for more information. Aaron Hoopes Zen Shiatsu Massage Therapy Zen Shiatsu is a form of bodywork where pressure is applied to all parts of the body along specific pathways

(meridians). This technique stimulates the natural healing powers of the

body. Stimulating imbalanced areas of the body restores a balanced flow. Zen Shiatsu relaxes the autonomic nervous system, which has the effect of calming nervous distress and increasing resistance to stress. By helping with blood and lymph circulation in the body, it helps to maintain and improve muscle tone and healthy internal organ functions. Shiatsu can also strengthen the immune system. Regular and consistent shiatsu treatments can become an important aspect of preventive health care as well as treatment for existing symptoms, injuries and chronic ailments. I was almost a teenager before I realized everyone did not perceive the world as I did. Growing up

on a farm, the fairies & angels were more a part of my life than other children. Perhaps that is why I believe the truth of our own paths are clear inside of us & we all need help sometimes remembering or reconnecting to that truth & our heart’s desires. It is my desire to assist you in gaining clarity in your life circumstances and help you to make conscious decisions. Over 25 years ago I found myself going public with my readings and soon after began teaching & lecturing. I earned several labels including Reiki Master & hypnotist.
