John Deere D Publisher’s Choice

Photo Courtesy of William E. ‘Bill’ and Jenny Blaes, Cherryvale, Kansas

Leo Blaes of Cherryvale, Kansas operated a threshing business in 1936. The old Rumely Oil Pull he had used was failing. That summer he decided to replace it and purchased this 1936 John Deere D from Pile John Deere dealership in Independence, Kansas for $900. The D was Leo’s first John Deere; and it performed so well that when it came time to purchase a second tractor, he chose to purchase another John Deere. This time it was a 1941 B.

6.75X7.00 bore and stroke.

Leo passed away in 1965. His wife, Helen, wanted the D to remain in the family so she passed it down to their son William, ‘Bill’. She felt he had earned it for all the hours he had spent on it over the years. Bill was only two years old when his father purchased the D brand new. Until he was old enough to drive, Bill would ride on the fender while his father worked the fields. You could say Bill grew up on this tractor. He also purchased his father’s B The John Deere D had a long manufacturing for $200 and used it to pull a sled for his run from 1924-1953; this model was built two children. He currently has both the D at John Deere’s Moline, Illinois facility and and B. is equipped with a 2-cylinder engine with a 7

When it was calm out, he has been told, the sound of the Ds engine could be heard for miles away. Left: Bill Blaes with nephews Mike & Wayne Blaes taking the tractor out of storage after 30 years.

Bill’s great-grandfather Jacob Blaes immigrated to Cook County, Illinois from Prussia. Later he migrated west to Montgomery County, Kansas, settling in Indian Territory, where he lived, and farmed a 160acre farm.

Memories of the ‘old days’ still bring a bit of melancholy to Bill as he recalls the ‘cherry red’ glow of the exhaust during the many autumn evenings he spent plowing in the moonlight as a boy.

One time as youngsters, B i l l a n d h i s b r o t h e r, Raymond, were pulling a John Deere 12A combine with the D and deliberately tried to see if they could get it stuck in a muddy field. Not only did they succeed in getting it stuck, they buried it! The fun was over once they realized they had to get it out before

Leo and Helen raised four sons, Donald, Raymond, Bill and Robert who are the fourth generation of the Blaes family to farm in Kansas. Bill, and Raymond are the last remaining brothers. At 77 years-old Bill still actively farms with his nephews Mike and Wayne, sons of his oldest brother Donald. Raymond is also still actively farming. Memories of the ‘old days’ still bring a bit of melancholy to Bill as he 8

their father found out what they had done. They got it out by laying hedge posts crossway under the tires for traction; but Bill did admit there were some anxious moments. Bill was a l w a y s dedicated to never leaving a job undone. In July of 1956, Bill was scheduled to leave for military duty in the Army. There was still

a 30-acre field he needed to plow prior to leaving. He started plowing at 5 p.m., pulling a 3X14 plow and worked through the

The D spent most of its working life as the main tractor for the family’s 350 plus-acre farm. It was used for everything from running the threshing machine and plowing to blowing silage. For many years the D ran with little more than regular maintenance and an occasional steering adjustment. It was truly a hard working tractor. It wore out 3 sets of lugs before they put it on rubber tires and was on its second set of rubber t i re s w h e n i t was retired from farming. When Bill got the D, he decided it was time to overhaul the engine even though it was still in fair condition. He bored out the cylinders .125 and 9

put in aluminum pistons. When it was completed, it had so much compression the petcocks had to be removed before the engine would start. He used it around the farm for a few years and then finally only for blowing silage prior to retiring it in the 1970s. final complete restoration cost on the D is $3,500.

The D was placed on blocks so the wheels could be removed. The radiator and radiator curtain were re p l a c e d w i t h a n e w original style. For several weeks Bill cleaned parts and sandblasted the wheels. Throughout the restoration many visitors dropped by to see the progress. About 15 years before, Bill purchased a set of steel wheels in Montana for $750 to put on the D when he restored it. He searched for about two years before locating the full set. He purchased neoprene lugs for the rear wheels and ribs for the front wheels in Indiana. The total cost for wheels and retrofitting was $1,250. It makes for a rough ride but

gives an original look that can be driven on paved roads. He would not have been able to do so with the original steel lugs. On Sunday, August 30, 2009, the D was finally ready to be repainted. Bill’s nephew, Wayne, began painting at 10:00 a.m.; and finally, at 7:00 p.m., the tractor and all parts had been repainted.

On the evening of September 4th, just in time for the Thayer, Kansas’ homecoming parade which was to take place the following day, the D was ready to take its place in line. Since then, the D has been shown at the Wilson County Old Iron Days in Fredonia, Kansas and the Cherry Blossom Festival in Cherryvale, Kansas. It has also been the cover tractor on a popular farm magazine featuring antique tractors and was featured on RFD TV’s “Max Armstrong’s Tractor Shed” in March of 2010.

The next day reassembly began. With his nephews, Wayne, Mike, Tom, and g r a n d - n e p h e w, C o r y, assisting, over the next week wheels, decals, a new seat, fuel tank, and many smaller items were returned to their rightful place. The refinished steel wheels were put on. The 11

W PNEUMATIC PISTON NEFOR THE ORIGINAL GREASE BUSTER™ The new pneumatic piston (patent pending) for the Shop Size Grease Buster™, fits into a pneumatic hammer. I have opened frozen bearings that would otherwise have to be disassembled and cleaned to get lubrication into the fitting using this new pneumatic piston with the Shop Size Grease Buster™. In the short time it’s been on the market, I’ve received 100% positive comments! The Original Grease Buster™, patented and made in the USA for 17 years, cleans grease fittings and bearings using penetrating oil and hydraulic pressure. The Grease Buster™ is the answer to the problem of plugged up grease fittings and bearings, a problem common in machinery. The tool consists of a heavy-duty adjustable hydraulic coupler, cylinder and a piston with a knob. Remove the piston, fill the cylinder by pouring in a penetrating solvent, start the piston back into the cylinder, place the tool onto the grease fitting and by tapping the piston or hammer (or utilizing the new pneumatic piston) force the solvent into the fitting/bearing. Pneumatic piston fits on shop rig. Price $20. Grease Buster ™ - Cleans grease fittings T-J Tool dba Grease Buster™ Tools P. O. Box 120 • Waynesville, OH 45068
