Like LSA Seaplanes? You Have Beautiful Choices! by Dan Johnson
Progressive Aerodyne, manufacturer of the SeaRey, has its headquarters right on a lake in central Florida.
Life is good if you like LSA seaplanes. I’ll review five LSA seaplanes, either on the market or in development. Today SeaRey reins as far and away the most successful and proven design with some 600 flying. While SeaRey has been an Experimental Amateur Built (EAB) model, they’ve been working diligently on SLSA approval and will eventually sell SLSA, ELSA, and EAB versions. Priced around $70,000 as a kit, SeaRey is the most affordable seaplane. Owners are intensely loyal to the brand (Progressive Aerodyne) and the model. SeaRey is having a workshop right before Sebring. More about that shortly.
The handsome SeaMax is back with new representation. Look for SeaMax America at Sebring.
SeaMax is the next most proven and accepted seaplane. Manufactured in Brazil, about 100 are flying including a handful in the USA. SeaMax America is the new importer for the handsome LSA seaplane from prolific designer (and nice guy) Miguel Rosario. From Great Neck, New York Richard Rofe said, “We have added many new features and have moved to a much larger production facility. We plan to reintroduce ... the only SLSA [amphibious seaplane] that you can actually buy and fly!” 8
They are working on their new website; for now ring Richard at 516-466-5258. Now come three designs aimed directly at the LSA market; indeed, all have emerged since and as a consequence of FAA’s new rule and each is quite outstanding in its design appeal. Capturing the most attention is the Icon A5, which has garnered more than 700 delivery slot orders since its introduction at AirVenture 2008. The stunning A5 benefited from top-notch design and engineering staff hired from Scaled Composites, famous for building SpaceShipOne and other creations. Icon is also the funding leader, professionally pursuing deep pocket investors. Using its Silicon Valley roots and a Hollywood presentation, Icon generated a summer 2011 round of financing valued at $25 million. No one else is close. However, others are following.
Icon’s sleek A5 has drawn large crowds at three AirVenture airshows.
Newly announced was the EQP2, which stands for Equator P2 Excursion a design of Norway. Equator Aircraft is in the news as the company reports earning 4.2 million Norwegian krones or roughly $750,000 of government development funding. The company says, “The EQP2 Excursion is a carbon composite, hybrid/electric amphibian aircraft.” They plan an Experimental version first but plan to pursue the LSA market and more. EQP2 will be powered by the 125-hp (85 kW) Emrax engine. Check their website for some eye-popping art of this pretty entry. Also gaining increasing media attention is the equally distinctive Lisa from French designers Erick Herzberger and Luc Bernole. Though pricing is rather stratospheric (€300,000), the design standard and feature list are long including folding wings and their patented Seafoils, “a kind of hydrofoils located under the aircraft fuselage.” The project is flying and, as with Icon and Equator, Lisa Airplanes has a very slick website with lots of quality images. I’ll have more on Lisa in the near future.

Dinner Means Business... LSA Business by Dan Johnson, LAMA President
Since most of us can remember the aviation calendar revolved around Oshkosh (now known as AirVenture), which ended in the first days of August. Fall brought AOPA’s Expo (now Summit) and NBAA’s giant jet show. At the close of those shows, we began a rather long winter until Sun ‘n Fun rolled around in mid-April. Certainly, we had all manner of regional events and pancake breakfasts but the major airshows were over, it seemed. That is, until Sebring happened. Eight years ago, the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo popped up on the show circuit, first in late fall (at the end of hurricane season) then migrating to January. For snow-bound northerners the Florida event during the wintry months up north is a welcome respite and Florida is itself a dynamo of aviation activity with pilots interested in learning more about this newest aviation segment. More than 10,000 attendees and as many as 15,000 will flock to the Sunshine State to catch the action in the most dynamic slice of the aviation pie. In the 2012 running of Sebring, some of the biggest names of American aviation organizations are making an appearance. New president Rod Hightower will represent EAA as he addresses the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association annual dinner. AOPA president Craig Fuller will hold a hangarstyle town meeting and GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce will cohost an industry leaders meeting in cooperation with LAMA. FAA will also bring a contingent of advisory personnel to meet with industry representatives. Many forums are scheduled, an auction and a wine tasting are planned along with numerous other activities to fill the four days of the show. But the main attraction is the presence of nearly every Light-Sport Aircraft available on the U.S. market. This is the nation’s largest collection of these lightest and least costly airplanes featuring the newest technologies. LOOKING GOOD AND GOOD LOOKING Recently LAMA staff visited the show site to make some final decisions about the LAMA Dinner and oth10
er activities. LAMA visitors found new director Jana Filip very ably taking the reins from founding director Bob Woods. Jana has been associated with the show since the beginning, so she already knew the flavor of the LSA-focused event. Filling the former military officer’s shoes wasn’t easy. Bob Wood left the show in fine shape but set an aggressive pace for his staff and small army of volunteers. He’ll stay to help the transition and will remain a volunteer, but Sebring is now run by the airport with Jana at its helm. The show kicks off Thursday, January 19. At the end of the opening day LAMA will hold its fifthannual dinner for LSA professionals engaging EAA president Rob Hightower to come speak to the opening evening assembly in the AeroShell tent. Some 300 LSA businesspeople will be in attendance, the largest such gathering in the world. Sponsorships are up. Exhibitors should fill every available spot. Forums are plentiful. Meetings help link up various groups. Activities are plentiful. The mood at Sebring is bright, so bring on the show. For those stuck in the snow up north, Florida is a desirable destination. SST stands for strutted or strut braced wing. With superior aerodynamics over conventional microlights with top rigging it also allows the aircraft to be stored in a much lower hanger. In fact, if the wing was lowered into the low hangar position it would need even less height than a small fixed wing aircraft.
AirBorne improved leading edge definition with increased use of mylar to the undersurface. The leading edge round is cut into the sail to allow controlled washout at the tips. The airframe is state of the art with multi sleeved 6061 aluminium and CNC engineered fittings. Trimmer control gives the pilot power assisted pitch through the control bar handle. AirBorne’s SST wing is the hottest selling wing on the market. As of 11/4/2010 the list price for a delivered SST (with attachement kit) is $14,255. We are offering this wing, with attachment kit, for $3000 below the current list price.

Act II: Switching Careers after 50 Same Path, And realizing a life long dream. . . a career in aviation.
by Carol Carpenter
on by Rainbow Aviation.” Thus Rick’s shift in careers began. Rick has been interested in aviation for as long as he can remember. “As a boy, I spent all of my free time building radio controlled airplanes with my dad and reading Popular Mechanics. I was always daydreaming about building my own airplane.” “When I signed up for the LSRM course, my plan was to start my own aviation company and build experimental light sport aircraft (ELSA) to resell,” Rick explains. “During my years at DuPont, I had continued to pursue my interest Sadly, the down economy has put a lot of workers in aviation. I had built ultralights and a few kit over age 50 in the unenviable position of needing to aircraft throughout the years. I would buy ultralight find a new profession. Don’t believe that old cliché kits and unfinished projects and complete them: about middle-aged dogs and new tricks, though; Kolbs, Fishers, Quicksilvers, Rans, Protech PT-2, lots of wildly successful people found big success Junior Ace, and a Curtiss Jenny replica. So I knew in careers they began after their fiftieth birthdays. I enjoyed building.” And Rick Hayes is a great example.
With the new Light Sport Rule, Rick realized that “In March 2009, I left DePont, the automobile he could turn his hobby into a business building company I had been working with for 30 aircraft in the ELSA category for customers. (Unlike years. With the hard times in Michigan and the amateur built category, ELSA may be built by the troubles in the automobile industry, the hired professionals. Another hidden opportunity future of my job was in doubt. The company created by the 2004 Light Sport Rule.) With the LSRM was eliminating people and I had a chance to certificate, Rick would be able to offer maintenance, leave with a pension, so I took it. I immediately repairs, and inspections on light sport aircraft, build signed up for the 120 hour Light Sport ELSA kits for resell and, as an added component; Repairman Maintenance (LSRM) course put Rick decided he would like to be an LSA Dealer.

aviation maintenance is not uncommon. The average attendee in the Rainbow Aviation LSRM course is over 50, most starting a second career. Some, like Rick focusing on building kits, specializing in a particular make of LSA. Others, specializing in Rotax engines. Some set up mobile services while others set up businesses at their local airports serving all Special Light Sport Aircraft (SLSA) and ELSA makes and models. The options are endless. “The free online LSRM support site that Rainbow offers to their graduates is invaluable.” Rick adds. “That site keeps me up to date on everything from Rick had built a few Rans Aircraft in the past and he liked the company and the quality of their products. So next he took a trip to Hays, Kansas. After an impressive flight in a Rans S-19 with the Rans Aircraft Company’s CEO Randy Schlitter, Rick applied to become a Rans dealer. “It was a process,” Rick explains. “But, in the end I was accepted as a dealer. I took all of the Rotax specialty training and I set up Hayes Aero, LLC in Ortonville, MI. (http://www.hayesaero.com). I know I would not be a Ran’s Dealer without the LSRM certificate or be able to build and sell aircraft professionally. My entire business concept was not possible before the light sport rule,” Rick explains. The first aircraft Rick built after earning his LSRM was an ELSA Rans S-19. It took Rick around 1500 hours to complete. After delivering the aircraft to Kansas, Rick began work on his next kit, a Rans S-6S. “I work on these projects intermittently, performing

Rotax bulletins, to new light sport regulations, and provides a platform for me to ask questions related to troubleshooting, business set up, or any aspect of my business. I really appreciate the access to the great pool of knowledge.” Light Sport is the fastest growing segment in aviation today and the opportunities are abundant. From owner operators performing their own inspections to new business owner hanging a shingle . . . the LSRM training provides a huge opportunity. Each journey starts with a step. customers. I really specialize in Rans Aircraft, but I help out folks with maintenance issues. I provide Rotax services, repairs, and rebuilding as well. It all keeps me very busy.” In February of 2011, Rick became a Light Sport CFI. Today, he also provides flight training and Rans Aircraft transition training. “I love what I’m doing now. My hobby has become my second career. I love talking to the customers and helping them out with problems they may run into. I never get tired of talking airplanes and I make a lot of friends doing it.” Rick comments. “I feel very lucky. It’s tough times, you know?” Rick’s successful attempt at a second career in
