WELCOME This year marks the first-ever Indy Shorts International Film Festival and I am honored to have been chosen as the face and spokesperson of the largest short film festival in the Midwest! The staff at Heartland Film thought I could bring together my love of all things short and my genetic fondness of flowers together for Indy Shorts at Newfields. With more than $25,000 in cash prizes, beer, Academy Award®-qualifying films, and special screenings of Joyce Forum, 9FilmFest, and Easterseals Disability Film Challenge winners, this is bound to be the greatest four days this summer. Thank you to our board of directors for their ongoing support during the year. (Please hire me full-time, I’m willing to commute via snail.) And shout out to our volunteers – film festivals could never survive without you, and thank you for giving me a lift every now and then. Welcome and thank you for joining us. I look forward to seeing you all but mostly your fashionable footwear. Enjoy the festival and watch where you step. Look out JT, I’m bringing short back!

INTERVIEW WITH CARTER PILCHER I would have to call people and say, “We owe you $10,000, we are really sorry. We can’t pay you $10,000 but we can pay you $500 and here is our payment plan for the next two years. We’re just going to keep paying a little bit and hopefully we will get out of all this, but I’m not going to quit and we will be here as long as you don’t push us into bankruptcy.” I told my shareholders I would stick it out until we got there.
opportunity to make films in Indiana was when I was a kid and they made the movie “Hoosiers.” I think all of us at that time in our lives saw that movie and thought, “Wow, this is such a great movie and all around us are really great stories.”
There was one day where no money came in and I didn’t have the bus fare to go home, which is a pound– a little more than a dollar. I had no money in my pockets, no money in my bank account, and I literally walked home four miles from the office and I’ve never forgotten that.
When you’re a kid from Indiana, Indiana is always home. It’s a great place, it’s an unusual place, and it’s really a fabulous environment.
Heartland Film had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with Chief Executive of ShortsTV, Carter Pilcher. This Terre Haute, Indiana native founded Shorts International in 2000 and is a member of the Short Film and Feature Animation Branch of the US Academy of Motion Pictures, Another memorable moment was when I was Arts and Sciences. invited to join the Academy of Motion Pictures a few years later in 2009. The first year I went to What first interested you in the film industry the Oscars ceremony, I will never forget. I took and short films specifically? my favorite date of all time, my mother, and she The interesting thing about shorts especially was beside herself because all these movies stars when we started the company back in 2000, was were very sweet and would come up and say hello, that they are kind of an so that was very special. old art form that are a powerful and impactful What is the process to way to tell a story. I be invited to join the thought short films were Academy of Motion an amazing and timely Pictures? thing for the Internet It is a great honor to be when we were first a member and it’s very starting to put things online. secretive. Someone has to put your name forward and you have to have two members sponsor you I don’t think I have a very long attention span. and then there is a big meeting and a secret vote. So I really love the idea that I’m watching a whole It’s a great group of really dedicated professionals movie and I’m crying or laughing and it’s done. who view an Oscar as the most important thing I just love that idea. you can win.
“It’s about throwing yourself in, giving yourself a chance, and never giving up. “
Being from Indiana, how has the local film industry changed throughout the years? Indianapolis has become a real Mecca for filmmakers. Indianapolis is that city that is just the perfect size. It’s big enough to have great cultural experiences and great facilities to use. It has a lot of interesting elements and it’s easy to shoot there. I think events like Heartland Film What are some most memorable moments so far Festival and Indy Shorts have really helped from your career? Indianapolis and Indiana develop its own place There was a period in 2005 or 2006, where almost in film. every day we were on the edge of bankruptcy. The moment I realized there was a great
Since then there has been a real noticeable and steady growth in the understanding that Indiana, and stories from Indiana, are really important.
Any words of inspiration for aspiring filmmakers or those in the film industry? I would say more than anything else, don’t give up. Your story is your story. Or the role you want to play in developing that story, if it’s developing animations or designing sets or costumes. All of those skills, your abilities are probably as good as anybody else’s. And you should never give up if you have a great idea or a great talent and you push hard and work hard, you’ll be great. It’s about throwing yourself in, giving yourself a chance, and never giving up.
BIG STARS IN SHORT MOVIES
What were some of the challenges you faced when you founded Shorts International? I faced the same challenges when I founded Shorts International as any short filmmaker faces. There are two main challenges: is your idea strong enough or good enough and is there anybody in the world that will fund it.

These committees are comprised of volunteer screeners, each of whom have taken a critical examination and have been hand-selected by Heartland Film staff. Screeners watch each submitted film in its entirety and complete a detailed online review. These reviews help Heartland Film’s programming staff determine the strongest submissions each year. Consisting of film professionals, academics, and critics, Finalist Juries ultimately select the Grand Prize Winner within each category. Full bios can be found at IndyShorts.org.
