NIGHT BASKETBALL BRINGING GRAFTON KIDS IN FROM THE DARK

Concern about teens roaming Grafton streets at night are being addressed in the most positive way possible thanks to brainstorming by local community leaders and $39,090 in funding for the Nationals in NSW Government, according to Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis.

“After Dark Basketball is now running from 6pm until midnight on Fridays at the Grafton PCYC and gives 10 to 19 year-olds a positive alternative to hanging out unsupervised in places like the skate park,” Mr Gulaptis said.

“It involves local youth groups, Council and the police and gives young people not just basketball and mentoring, but also a free main meal and PCYC club membership.

“Projects like the After Dark Basketball program is a great example of how we can help young people build resilience and improve wellbeing by providing them with the tools and resources they need to become the best version of themselves.”

Dominic Teakle, Chief Executive Offcer of PCYC NSW believes that sport and activity provide a vehicle for young people to achieve greatness.

“As a youth charity, PCYC NSW has been at the centre of communities across NSW for over 85 years and we are excited to be the recipients of the Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative grant to further develop the youth in the local Grafton community through the After Dark Basketball Project,” Mr Teakle said.

“With our partners at the NSW Police Force we aim to reduce and prevent crime by, and against, young people by building resilience, encouraging positive life choices, and giving them a place to belong.”

Minister for Regional Youth, the North Coast Nationals’ Ben Franklin said the $10.3 million Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative offers large grants between $10,000 and $50,000 and small grants for up to $10,000.

“The large grants fund projects such as community events, peer support groups, cultural connection or partnership programs, while small grants are to enable initiatives like sporting programs and barbecues,” Mr Franklin said.

“Our Regional Youth Community Coordinators will help connect young people with the projects that best support their wellbeing and recovery and foster resilience and connection.”

The Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative is funded through the NSW COVID-19 Economic Recovery Initiative and the co-funded NSW and Australian Governments’ Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Eligible applicants are encouraged to apply for funding for wellbeing programs, events and resources as part of the initiative.

Applications for both large and smaller grants are open now and close on 31 December 2022, or when fully allocated.

ADDITIONAL $2.1 MILLION FOR NSW GREYHOUND PARTICIPANTS

Recently appointed Chief Executive Offcer of Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Rob Macaulay has announced the introduction of a $2.1 million boost for participants through fourth-place prizemoney and increased travel allowances.

“Starting October 1, we will add fourth place prizemoney at all race meetings,” Mr Macaulay said. “We’re also increasing travel subsidies. We’re doing this in support of all participants.

“These decisions follow my frst month in the job where I have been able to spend time going to various race meetings and listening to participants. I’m trying to get to every club and track in NSW before the end of the year. I have just had a great visit to Dubbo and Broken Hill Greyhound Racing Clubs, and I’m so proud of all those people involved all over NSW. These good people are the backbone of our sport across regional NSW.”

TAB racing - both city and provincial - will now include $100 for fourth place, countrygraded TAB meetings will have fourth place prizemoney of $75, and non-TAB meetings will have fourth place worth $50. This represents an additional $1.3 million to the prizemoney pool annually.

GRNSW is also adding $800,000 through increases to travel subsidies. At present participants receive a $60 travel subsidy for the frst dog they race at a meeting, then $30 for each additional dog. From October 1, they will now receive $60 for every dog they take to a race meeting.

“These are two nice, simple areas to immediately increase returns to participants,” Mr Macaulay said. “There’s more to come, but I want to have more stakeholder engagement about where we should direct this additional prizemoney. For that purpose, I will announce shortly a prizemoney summit in October, where some of the good ideas and needs of participants can be discussed, and then we’ll add even more prizemoney.”

These increases come on the back of GRNSW’s best rehoming results ever, and the continued roll-out of new, safer tracks and facility improvements across NSW.

“I’m proud of this sport and its people, and at GRNSW we are committed to doing everything we can to improve every aspect of it. Minister Kevin Anderson is hugely supportive, and we’re very pleased to be doing all these good things. Track safety, greyhound welfare and rehoming, participant income and the welfare of all the families involved in our sport are all important. More good news is coming,” said Mr Macaulay.

Australian Rugby celebrates Women’s Rugby Sevens World Cup triumphs

Rugby Australia congratulates the Aussie Women’s Sevens team after they won the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town.

The triumph follows their HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series title, and their Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, giving the team a perfect record for the 2021-22 season, and a historic “Triple Crown”.

The Aussie Men fnished the Rugby World Cup in fourth place, following defeat to eventual champions Fiji at the Semi-Final stage, before falling 14-19 to Ireland in the Bronze play-off.

It has been a droughtbreaking season for the Aussie Men too, winning the World Rugby Sevens Series for the frst time.

Levi and Toole also claimed Rookie of the Year, while Caslick and Toole were awarded Impact Player of the Year.

Rugby Australia CEO Andy Marinos believes the Australian Women’s Sevens team could be Australia’s best sporting team.

“What an incredible season for our allconquering Women’s Sevens team!” said Mr Marinos.

“They have entered the conversation as one of Australia’s greatest sporting teams today.

“In a massive year of international competition, with a full season of the HSBC Rugby Sevens Series, the Commonwealth Games, and the Rugby World Cup Sevens, they have won every major trophy available to them.

“An unbeaten record of international titles surely puts this team in the stratosphere of Australian sport.

“Congratulations to our Men’s team also… Things did not work out for them in Cape Town, but nothing can take away the fact that they are the frst Australian team to win the Men’s World Rugby Sevens Series.

“On behalf of the Australian Rugby community, we are extremely proud of our Sevens teams’ achievements this year. They have delivered pure gold for our country today.”

Chief Executive Offcer, James Johnson, said that the fxture against South Africa was another vital pillar for the CommBank Matildas match schedule. “We have been carefully and deliberately constructing a programme of international friendlies to ensure the team is afforded a diverse range of opponents and playing styles to build together as we continue further down the road to the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in 2023,” Johnson said. “This will also be a unique moment to play a “home” match in London and it is a match that can highlight the global appeal of the CommBank Matildas, as well as presenting a unique opportunity for Australians abroad to watch one of the bestloved national teams in action. There are tens of thousands of Australians living in London and we’d love to see them cheering on the green and gold.” “We would like to thank the South African Football Association for their collaboration in securing this historic international friendly.” Since qualifying for their frst major international tournament a decade ago, South Africa has steadily grown into an emerging nation and strong power of the African continent. I n July, Banyana Banyana captured their frst ever Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco, while also qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023™. This fxture would result in Australia having played an opponent from every FIFA confederation over the last 18 months. CommBank Matildas Head Coach Tony Gustavsson said: “To have played a nation from every FIFA confederation, will provide the coaching staff and the players with a lot of invaluable information during our fnal phase of preparations.” “South Africa are current champions of Africa and a team that is fast rising in esteem in women’s football. On the road to their frst African Cup of Nations title, they demonstrated excellent qualities as a team and as individuals which should ensure an entertaining and challenging encounter.” Australia is scheduled to play a second match in Europe on 11 October 2022 during the FIFA Women’s International Window with details to be released in the coming weeks.
