EXPERIENCE HISTORY

Discovery Harbour, Penetanguishene

The history, heritage and culture of the Heart of Georgian Bay is truly immersive in its nature From the curious dabbler to the full-fledged aficionado, history appetites of all kinds are well fed here. Step inside the S.S. Keewatin, the last Edwardian Steamship in the world, and begin your voyage through the history of Georgian Bay. The Martyrs’ Shrine pays homage to the Jesuits’ mission, while the Huronia Museum gives you a window into how the Wendat lived in an advanced society 500 years ago. Sainte-Marie among the Hurons lets you explore Ontario’s first European community, a living testament to the French Jesuit missions among the Huron-Wendat people. Integrating different cultures has its own unique challenges. Stop by the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum and Archives and stroll through the statues and monuments along the Legacy Walkway in the Rotary Champlain Wendat Park to gain a better understanding and feel the past wash over you.

MARTYRS’ SHRINE 16163 Hwy 12 W Midland, ON, L4R 4K6 (705) 526-3788 www.martyrs-shrine.com Martyrs’ Shrine is the National Shrine to the Canadian Martyrs. This holy and historic site honours the eight Jesuit Saints and their companions who lived, worked, and died here over 350 years ago while serving various Native peoples of Canada. People of all faiths and cultures become renewed in spirit, hope, and love, and inspired to continue the mission of this sacred place where saints once walked. An architectual monument, and house of prayer, Martyrs’ Shrine welcomes over onehundred-thousand pilgrims during the summer months. Martyrs’ Shrine opens the first Saturday of May to Thanksgiving Monday.

S.S. Keewatin PO Box 189, Port McNicoll, ON, L0K 1R0 (855) 533-9284 | www.sskeewatin.com Five years older than the Titanic, this British-built ship— the last Edwardian liner in the world—traversed the Great Lakes for 58 years (1907 to 1965). Built originally to move immigrants from Southern Ontario to the top of Lake Superior so they could reach farmlands in Alberta and Saskatchewan, in 1920 the S.S. Keewatin became a tourist cruise ship, taking Americans and well-heeled Canadians to visit the Canadian West. KEEWATIN has been lovingly restored... even her engine works and performs for visitors. Her staterooms are staged, her dining salon is set, and the ship has a look of being ready to leave for a voyage. “Amazing” is a comment many visitors use, as nothing can prepare you for this experience of going back in time.

Take time to browse the largest collection of Group of Seven paintings north of the 400 highway and the extensive exhibit of the great vessels that have travelled Georgian Bay. For almost 70 years, the Huronia Museum has preserved and housed the history of this region and its people.
