Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards
JUNE 25, 2012
2012
LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
E at the Los Angeles Business Journal are particularly proud to present to you the second annual Nonprofit & Corporate Citizen Awards. These Awards, with honorees announced Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, are designed to honor those professionals and organizations in the nonprofit world that continue to make a positive impact on the community and do so under difficult financial constraints. Equally as important are the efforts of the corporations supporting these nonprofits. Many corporate executives volunteer time on boards and lend support through financial donations and sponsorships. These awards – presented in ten categories – recognize both equally important groups. It’s hard to dispute that the means to solving some of the city’s – and the world’s – most pressing problems rest squarely on the shoulders of the private sector. Businesses bring powerful and impactful resources to the table, above and beyond their significant monetary contributions. In the service of society, corporations can leverage their assets, including product and in-kind donations, volunteers, professional services, technology, and unsurpassed distribution channels. Yes, the bottom line of many a business is being challenged during these economically difficult times, but charitable giving must be considered part of the healing process. Social causes are, in fact, an essential part of corporate culture and business success. Tapping the resources of the corporate world to strategically match social, community, and public needs creates immense benefits for all parties – and that is something we can’t afford to lose in any climate. We hope these champions of philanthropy, volunteerism and/or service to community inspire you as individuals, as citizens of this great region and as corporate decision makers, to also go the extra mile. We thank and salute all of the nominees, finalists and honorees – those of you who give something back. You are more than heroes – you are an essential part of future corporate and societal success.

2012 Honorees ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR
CHRYSALIS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the resources and support needed to find and retain employment. In 1984, at 22 years old, John Dillon arrived in Los Angeles to work on Skid Row, assisting the area’s homeless population. What he saw was an emerging crisis and an urgent need to help the homeless. He founded Chrysalis as a food and clothing distribution center, serving men and women living on the streets of Los Angeles’ Skid Row. As the agency grew, it became clear that long-term solutions were needed in order to eradicate poverty and homelessness. Chrysalis developed an effective and nationally recognized program to help homeless and lowincome individuals become job ready so that they may find and retain employment. Chrysalis’ philosophy is that a steady job is the single most important step in a person’s transition out of poverty and onto a pathway to long-term self-sufficiency. Offering a hand up, rather than a hand out, Chrysalis empowers its clients to complete a self-directed job search. Since 1991, Chrysalis has provided transitional jobs for its clients with the greatest barriers to employment. By providing valuable work experience, Chrysalis helps clients gain the necessary skills needed to re-enter the job market. In 2010 alone, Chrysalis Enterprises created over 218,000 hours of employment and generated $2.5 million in wages. And despite a struggling economy, in 2011 Chrysalis was able to help over 1300 low income and homeless individuals secure employment with outside employers - a 15% increase over 2010! Chrysalis operates three centers that are located where homelessness and poverty are most pervasive: on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and in the Pacoima area of the San Fernando Valley.

HEART OF LOS ANGELES ANTHONY BROWN ONY Brown, Executive Director of Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), a nonprofit organization in the Rampart District of Los Angeles, has been advocating for social change for over 23 years. Tony oversees a 75 member staff and over 600 volunteers and is an active member of HOLA’s Board of Directors. His strong collaboration with educational, nonprofit and city offices continues to demonstrate his honest desire for social change in Los Angeles. His work and dedication at HOLA shows his passion and sense of obligation to provide underserved youth with a chance to achieve academic and life success. While Brown must often spend his time fostering and growing new and potential relationships with funders, advocates and partners, and managing HOLA’s daily operations, he still takes the time to visit with and address the greatest needs of HOLA’s students and families. HOLA, through the leadership of Brown, maintains an open door policy that allows open communication between staff, students, parents and partners. Brown and the volunteer Board of Directors have built up a strong team who effectively carry out HOLA’s mission, vision and values. Brown is active in directing development efforts, strategic planning and overall staffing decisions on a daily basis. His management of HOLA uses a “shared leadership” model in which each program director is given the responsibility and the freedom to shape and run their programs. In turn, each program seeks to give their volunteers and students both ownership and responsibility within their spheres.
T
The success of this method is evident in the number of HOLA alumni who return to HOLA to give back to their community, mentor and invest in the next generation of leaders. Brown meets with staff weekly as a group to promote accountability, share best practices and new ideas, collaborate on program events and schedules, and create a strong organizational bond.

UNION RESCUE MISSION REV. ANDREW BALES NDY Bales brings over 25 years of experience in community outreach and service to “his homeless friends,” as Rev. Bales puts it, as he leads Union Rescue Mission into a new era of unique and innovative services for Los Angeles’ Skid Row community. Rev. Bales’ vision for the future of the Mission is most definitely in keeping with Union Rescue Mission’s long and distinguished history of service in the City of Los Angeles. Established in 1891, the Mission has always served the most desperate men, women, children and families of the community. One of Rev. Bales’ earliest challenges as Mission leader was to assist in the developing of transitional housing for mothers and their children living in the Mission’s downtown facility and in neighboring SRO hotels in and around Skid Row. He is also committed to providing permanent supportive housing for senior women away from the mean streets of Los Angeles. Hope Gardens Family Center, in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest near Sylmar, was developed to serve this growing population of abandoned and desperately poor women with children and elderly women. The Senior Women’s Permanent Supportive Housing facility at Hope Gardens was opened in August 2006. The Women’s and Children’s Transitional Living Facility opened in late June of 2007. As CEO of Union Rescue Mission, Rev. Bales has had a pivotal role in reshaping hospital and governmental policies related to “dumping” of homeless patients from hospitals on to the streets of Skid Row. His present focus is organizing and working with community partners to make a commitment to ending homelessness in Los Angeles by a significant number within the next 7 to 10 years.

NONPROFIT TEAM
TREEPEOPLE, INC. is an environmental nonprofit that unites the power of trees, people and technology to grow a sustainable future for Los Angeles. TreePeople’s shared leadership model (pioneered by Executive Director Tom Hansen) has created a true team approach and a culture focused on ensuring TreePeople’s ongoing success. Over and over, TreePeople has tapped the individual strengths and collaborative nature of its staff to tackle organizational activities critical to its effective day-to-day operations and long-term impact. Central to TreePeople’s shared leadership model is a permanent, self-elected and diverse cross-functional staff team of 12-20 focused on the organization’s “PSO” or Primary Strategic Objective. This PSO team is charged with key organizational objectives such as the defining strategic goals and target metrics, designing and implementing environmental solutions, ensuring integrated approach towards strategic initiatives, etc. By design, this empowered staff team applies “open source thinking,” fostering collective discovery and thoughtful discussions that drive TreePeople decision-making and actions. For example, during the first phase of TreePeople’s recent visioning and planning process, a working group comprised of key Board and staff leaders participated in defining TreePeople’s desired impact and the tipping point for effecting change in L.A. During this time, the PSO team played an

active and parallel role in vetting and refining the vision, and contributing significantly to the development of the business plan. The PSO team’s integrated view of the organization was especially critical to designing, communicating and refining an effective and efficient programmatic strategy to contribute to TreePeople’s success. Since the completion of this plan, the PSO team has taken lead on ensuring successful implementation of the plan.

JVS VETERANS FIRST VS Los Angeles offers hope and opportunity to our diverse community through job training, mentoring and education, combined with expert career guidance, employer partnerships and comprehensive resources, transforming lives and empowering individuals to achieve dignity and independence. Through JVS’ Business Services division, whose proceeds benefit the humanitarian work of the agency, JVS collaborates with a wide array of local businesses, providing them with recruitment, job fairs, candidate screening, performance management and other employee related services. Approximately 70% of JVS’ income is from governmental contracts; 16% is from direct donations and the remainder is from fees for service and from other income. Vivian Seigel, JVS’ CEO, has set the tone of the organizations since 1996. Under her leadership, JVS has grown to become largest and most comprehensive agency of its kind in Los Angeles and in the state. All the employees and volunteers are highly trained professionals who take personal care of their clients. JVS helps not only people with barriers to employment, but also the “new unemployed,” white collar professionals who earned over $100,000 annually, have had fairly stable careers, and with little idea of how to cope with the new job market. JVS has over 20 unique programs to assist these populations, including its groundbreaking “Veterans First” program in which

JVS assists veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars in transitioning from military to civilian life with comprehensive job services, support groups and access to community resources. SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
GUMBALL FOUNDATION
Gumball Foundation’s mission is to foster the next generation of creative social entrepreneurs. The Foundation achieves its mission through an innovative program that helps students gain access to college by helping them start their own small-scale vending machine business. Upon graduation, they walk away from the Foundation program with a business skill set, $10,000$20,000 in matching funds, and an acceptance letter to a university. The Foundation strives to instill in its students a sense of integrity, social responsibility, and respect for themselves and their community. The Foundation’s core is middle and high school students attending LAUSD schools in low income communities. Students are excited to earn money for their college education and even more interested when they learn that it will not interfere with their school schedule and is done with a minimal time commit-

ment. Parents view the Gumball program as a way to engage their children academically while teaching them business skills they may otherwise not learn in their community. It also gives parents who would like to finance their child’s education a sense of relief to know that there is a savings account set aside for their child’s college education. In middle school, students receive their first gumball machine to install in a local business. To stay in business, students must provide proof of good grades to the business owner and the Foundation. In high school, the students accept more responsibility and an opportunity to earn more money for college by managing a refreshment or snack machine installed in a corporate office. When students leave the program, the majority of the vending machines are recycled back into the program for the new incoming students.

UNITED PARCEL SERVICE (UPS) list of UPS’ contributions to United Way’s mission of Creating Pathways Out of Poverty for our most vulnerable neighbors is seemingly endless. UPS’ unparalleled generosity was made clear recently when the company officially donated its record-setting one billionth dollar to United Way. In addition to providing much needed financial support for implementing vital community initiatives, UPS team members offer the physical manpower, intellectual capital and skills-based volunteering needed to get the job done. The incredible partnership between UPS and United Way, which dates back to 1982, was perhaps best summed up by UPS Foundation President Ken Sternad: “UPS and United Way share a common purpose to build stronger communities. Year after year, our employees donate their money and volunteer their time to improve the lives of others. We are a proud United Way partner and support its ongoing efforts.” UPS has gone to great lengths to live up to this monumental commitment by: Leading the nation for eight consecutive years in its support of United Way’s annual workplace campaigns; raising nearly $55.9 million in donations from both employees and retirees during the 2009 - 2010 season; Becoming the first corporation to ever donate more than $50 million in a single campaign to United Way (in 2002); and Lending their best and brightest employees to assist UW staff in the expansion of solicitation efforts and the opening of new markets during peak

As a corporation, UPS is widely known for its rich history of community involvement and philanthropy and states its underlying mission in the following way: “We build on our legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen through the conduct of our people and company in the communities we serve.”

The organization receives funding from individual and corporate donors, as well as community and family foundations. In its work to fight the number one killer in the United States, cardiovascular disease, as well as the number four killer in the Unites States, stroke, the AHA has found a staunch supporter and ally in Union Bank. Union Bank is an example of that rare organization that looks at what they can do beyond a straight corporate donation. It is a rare company that engages their employees in-depth with their philanthropic efforts, not just through a once a year event and sponsorship, but through several touch points and activities per year. As a result of this top level leadership’s involvement and commitment to AHA’s cause, each and every branch manager and employee is involved in the partnership by participating in the Heart Walk and National Walking Day. Even employees at their large operation buildings also participate in the Heart Walk and National Walking Day. Six specific Union Bank branches will host the Wellness Expos reaching hundreds of community members, employees and customers with lifesaving educational messages and free health screenings. CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY / BENJAMIN CENTER WITH little more than an idea and the passion to see it through, Harold Benjamin left his thriving career as an attorney and successful businessman to found, along with his wife Harriet Benjamin, The Wellness Community, now renamed the Cancer Support Community. They revolutionized the way we as a culture face cancer; enhancing the lives of tens of thousands of people affected by this illness and taking care to ensure that no cancer patient or family is ever charged for services. The Benjamins believed in the powerful connection between emotions and physical well-being. Harriet had battled breast cancer and won, and both she and Harold had benefitted from the encouragement of family and friends. This support system aided in her recovery and became the foundation of Dr. Benjamin’s Patient Active Concept, which encourages active participation in cancer treatment, camaraderie and community “to improve the quality of life and enhance the possibility of recovery.”

In strengthening the management of these organizations, ESC impacted the lives of approximately 150,000 individuals who directly benefitted from being served by these 150 more effective, more sustainable organizations. The impact of ESC’s services reverberates throughout our community, however – since indirectly, 150 stronger organizations benefit all who reside in the greater Los Angeles area. ESC offers the best possible services at the most affordable rate. Almost 80% of ESC’s costs are covered by its dedicated volunteers’ pro bono services, which then stretch every dollar ESC receives for maximum return on client and donor investment.

EDISON INTERNATIONAL
FOR more than 125 years, Edison International has remained committed to the Los Angeles region. In 2011 alone, Edison International contributed nearly $17 million to nonprofit organizations, making the company one of the top corporate charitable givers in this area. In 2012, Edison expects to exceed that figure. What’s also significant is that Edison International philanthropy is funded through shareholder contributions—-none of its donations are paid for through utility rates. Last year, 79% of its funding was specifically targeted to underserved communities, meaning large organizations like the United Way and grassroots groups like InnerCity Struggle that help underprivileged or minority communities. In an effort to remain a collaborative partner to the community, especially during a challenged economic climate, Edison has expanded its philanthropic outreach in areas where it aims to make the strongest impact by enhancing educational opportunities amongst underserved groups, strengthening environmental stewardship, empowering its communities with safety and preparedness information, and promoting civic engagement and economic development.
EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION EXCEPTIONAL Children’s Foundation (ECF) was founded in 1946 by a group of concerned parents seeking to establish an alternative to institutionalized care for their children with developmental disabilities. Over the years, ECF’s services adapted to meet the changing needs of its vulnerable target population. ECF successfully developed and implemented early intervention programs for infants and toddlers, as well as residential, work and activity programs for adults. In 2008, ECF merged with Kayne Eras Center (KEC), adding a K-12 educational component and a Diagnostic and Therapeutic Center to ECF’s programs. ECF’s mission is to provide the highest quality services for children and adults who are challenged with developmental, learning, and emotional disabilities— empowering them to reach their greatest potential. It serves 2,400 clients of all ages and their families annually through 15 service sites in Los Angeles County. It is the only organization of its kind in California that provides a lifespan of services for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
GENESIS LA
INNER-CITY ARTS
GENESIS LA (GLA) was created in 1998 with a mission to provide capital and capacity to low-income neighborhoods as a means to facilitate high-impact real estate projects. Originally conceived in the office of former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, GLA was founded on the simple premise that local government resources are insufficient to deal with all of the city’s challenges. Therefore, GLA was charged with identifying other sources of capital with which to deliver the programs, services, and opportunities low-income communities need. GLA has developed strategic partnerships that have allowed it to stretch its $8 million of net assets by leveraging more than $450 million of investment into nearly 40 projects that GLA has financed. Through its certification by the U.S. Treasury Department as a Community Development Financial Institution (“CDFI”) and a Community Development Entity (“CDE”), GLA have been able to access federal funds and $170 million of NMTC allocation.
INNER-CITY Arts is widely regarded as one of the nation’s most effective arts education providers, is an oasis of learning, achievement and creativity in the heart of Skid Row, and a vital partner in the work of creating a safer, healthier Los Angeles. Inner-City Arts provides elementary, middle and high school students, many living in Los Angeles’ poorest neighborhoods, with the tools and skills they need to succeed academically and personally. Inner-City Arts is funded by corporate grants, Foundation Grants and individual donors. InnerCity Arts mission primary beneficiary are the students it serves. The community known as Skid Row also benefits from this mission.

RECOGNIZING the imminent threat facing one of our planet’s greatest natural spectacles, La Monarca Bakery has teamed up with the ECOLIFE Foundation, one of the leading conservation organizations focused on protecting the endangered Monarch butterflies, to support ECOLIFE’s two ongoing initiatives in Michoacán, Mexico planting up to 1 million trees in the Sierra Madre Occidental Forest outside of the Monarch butterfly reserves and building and installing highly efficient wood burning Patsari stoves for use in the homes of Michoacán’s Ejido communities, to reduce the average Ejido family’s wood consumption for heating and cooking. Since it began its programs in Michoacán, the ECOLIFE Foundation has planted over 50,000 trees and installed over 1,000 stoves in the areas surrounding the Monarch butterfly sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico. But there is still much more work needed in order to save the fir tree forests and with them the Monarch butterfly migration for future generations.

NBCUNIVERSAL
MATTEL has been a corporate partner with Playworks (also profiled in this section) at the national level for the past year. On a local level, Mattel has supported the mission by sponsoring two elementary schools in Watts to receive the Playworks program. The local Playworks “Jr. Coach” program has also benefitted from Mattel's support. Mattel suggested and introduced Playworks to the event location, and made it possible for the children to be transported there by bus. As part of the “12 Days of Play” Playworks event over the holiday season, which took place at two LA area schools, Mattel volunteers came to the schools with snow, games, crafts and gifts. Many of these children had never touched snow before! To ensure all children in the Playworks program could be a part of the 12 Days of Play, even beyond the two schools, Mattel supplied gifts to every child in the Playworks schools in LA county, 10,754 children received the joy of the holiday season.
NBCUNIVERSAL has had a long history of employing and positively portraying people with disabilities. From Geri Jewell in NBC’s “The Facts of Life,” the first person with a disability to have a regular role on a prime time series, to Jamie Foxx’s Oscar winning portrayal of Ray Charles in Universal Pictures’ “Ray,” NBCUniversal has been a leader in showcasing people with varying abilities. NBCUniversal holds a long-standing commitment to developing and practicing disability-inclusive initiatives to increase employment and improve portrayals of people living with disabilities. In July 2010, NBCUniversal participated in “Lights! Camera! Access!” a call to action summit hosted by the U.S. Department of Labor and Television Academy. The event brought together different networks, studios, corporate executives, guilds, diversity groups and others to discuss employment barriers in front of and behind the camera and increase access to entertainment by people living with disabilities. Such initiatives fortify NBCUniversal’s commitment to increase both employment and authentic portrayals of people with disabilities across the company and platforms.

NOREEN FRASER FOUNDATION THE mission of the Noreen Fraser Foundation (NFF) is to raise funds for women’s cancer research and awareness of the importance of early detection. NFF supports translational cancer research aimed at developing new prevention methods, diagnostic tools and non-toxic therapies to treat women’s cancers. NFF programs urge women to be proactive and have regular screenings. NFF’s hope is that until there are cures, women’s cancers will become manageable diseases controlled with targeted therapies that protect patients’ quality of life. NFF supports research for all women’s reproductive cancers (breast, ovarian, cervical and uterine/endometrial) because not only is there a strong hormonal and biological link between the women’s cancers including hereditary cancer syndromes but also because research in one type of women’s cancer oftentimes progresses research in the other types of women’s cancers. A multi-disciplinary approach and collaboration among researchers in the various fields of women’s cancers is absolutely necessary to accelerate the development of reasonable treatment options and potential cures.

P.S. I LOVE YOU FOUNDATION
PLAYWORKS
THE P.S. I Love You Foundation was established in 1998 with the mission to empower and inspire at-risk youth in Los Angeles by teaching skills to help them in their everyday lives, to reduce stress, to help them develop healthy minds and to build positive attitudes towards themselves and others. The P.S. I Love You Foundation believes if children develop strong emotional, physical and social well-being skills early in life, this can prevent these children from growing up depressed, violent, turning to gangs for support, dropping out of school, or using drugs to cope. The Foundation currently reaches over 700 at-risk youth each year through enrichment programs, inschool mentor programs and annual community events. The Foundation is a grass-roots organization, managed by its Board of Directors and run by over 200 volunteers who give of their time throughout the year to ensure that the P.S. I Love You message of health and well-being, positive attitudes, and hope continues to thrive.
PLAYWORKS’ mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of children by increasing opportunities for safe, meaningful play. Playworks provides 30-45 minutes of daily physical activity to children throughout the school day and beyond by engaging all children in recess and extracurricular activities that focus on inclusive and healthy play. As a result of Playworks’ efforts, schools experience reduced playground bullying and conflicts. Playworks Los Angeles was established in 2009, serving 12 lowincome elementary schools. This coming school year, the program will operate in 24 schools, providing over 13,000 students with the opportunity to engage in healthy, inclusive play and physical activity every school day. Playworks’ ultimate goal is to create an educational and social environment where students learn how to interact with their peers in appropriate and respectful ways, practice safe and healthy behaviors, take on meaningful leadership roles on the playground and in the classroom to become focused learners.

UPWARD Bound House is a community-based, social service agency headquartered in Santa Monica California. It is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1991 to help mitigate the affordable housing crisis on the Westside of Los Angeles County and specifically, its impact on two vulnerable populations: homeless families with minor children and very low-income seniors. Upward Bound House fulfills its mission through Family Place, its transitional housing facility for homeless families, and Senior Villa, its affordable housing facility for the very low-income elderly, both located in Santa Monica. Their newest facility, Family Shelter is an emergency facility for families with children located in Culver City. Connecting the Santa Monica facilities and their surrounding community is the innovative S. Mark Taper Foundation Intergenerational Center, a place where the three generations housed at Upward Bound can interact and receive services that will allow each resident to lead an enriched, empowered and independent life.
SHELTER PARTNERSHIP, INC.
YWCA GREATER LOS ANGELES
SHELTER Partnership is dedicated to alleviating, preventing and ending homelessness by assisting in the development of short-term and transitional housing programs, affordable housing and supportive services for the homeless and potentially homeless throughout Los Angeles County. It undertakes its mission by providing technical assistance and public policy research to community-based organizations and local governments, and operates the successful S. Mark Taper Foundation Shelter Resource Bank. Almost all of the community-based agencies that provide services, short-term housing and permanent housing for homeless households in Los Angeles County benefit from Shelter Partnership’s efforts. One of its most recent efforts was in convening a wide range of stakeholders to investigate the increase in homelessness among older adults. Through this, City of Los Angeles officials were persuaded to target this population in the City’s Permanent Supportive Housing Program, leading to two new housing developments opening with 95 units for homeless older adults, and six developments are now in progress with 123 units reserved for homeless older adults.

YWCA/GLA cares for its communities’ women and their families by providing relevant programs and activities that address today’s needs. In short, the YWCA has been working hard for over 118 years in Los Angeles, across America, and globally to end suffering for women and girls. TARGET CORPORATION
ZENITH
TARGET Corporation has contributed a total of $30,000 over the last 2 years to support LA Crime Stoppers. Aside from financial support, Target also provides the time and leadership of its own Florence Chung, who manages Target’s Public Safety Partnership initiative across the Western U.S. Region and Hawaii, as a form of intellectual philanthropy. The purpose of Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers is to prevent and reduce crime, by forming a partnership among the community, law enforcement and the media to offer anonymity and cash rewards up to $1,000 to anyone providing information leading to an arrest, thereby making the community a safer place for all who live or work in the region. Crime Stoppers encourages members of the community to assist local law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime by overcoming the two key elements that inhibit community involvement: fear and apathy.
LAST year, Zenith adopted the Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter as a pro-bono client. Specifically, Zenith Senior VP Tina Pukonen formed a probono media team who approached their vendors to secure excess advertising inventory which was used to promote the Walk To End Alzheimer’s event throughout LA County. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest annual event which raises awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Through a team effort, Zenith secured more than $1 million in inventory at no cost to the Association. Zenith worked with its 20th Century Fox client who generously produced and donated the Outddoor advertisements and its Pro-Bono Team devoted over 350 man hours planning, buying, and post-reporting the media buys; all at no cost to the Chapter. To that end, Zenith recruited over three dozen employees, clients, media partners and vendors to walk as part of Madge’s Media Mavens — the #1 fundraising team in the LA Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising just shy of $30,000.
