Volunteer Opportunities for Spring 2014 Monday, April 21st to Friday, May 30th In neighborhoods often overrun by poverty, crime and a feeling of hopelessness, Heart of Los Angeles invests in youth to build stronger communities. Heart of Los Angeles gives some of the city’s most vulnerable youth a chance to succeed in life. At Heart of Los Angeles, we depend upon the commitment and dedication of our talented staff and volunteers to offer the breadth and depth of programming that we provide at no charge to our families. We are looking for volunteers from all fields who have just a little extra time or can commit to coming on a regular basis. We understand how valuable the time of our volunteers is and we utilize their time effectively. For every child, there is a volunteer who can foster lasting change. We have many opportunities for this quarter in which you, a relative or a friend could help make a difference in the Los Angeles community. If you can give as little as one hour a week, we want you! Please see below for a list of opportunities: SmartStart/Elementary School Elementary Tutors/Homework Assistance: We are looking for volunteers to help students with their homework assignments in subjects such as language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Tutoring hours Monday – Thursday from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Learning Center/Clubs Assistance: During our learning centers/clubs, we are looking for volunteers to support as teacher assistants. Many of our learning centers are tied into the California Common State Standards in a hands-on learning environment. Also, our learning centers focus on language arts, writing, math, science and social studies (i.e., Junior Biologist, Math Super Heroes, Reading Rockets and more). Volunteer Hours requested: Monday-Thursday from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm. Bridges/Middle School Middle School Tutors/Homework Assistance: We are looking for volunteers to help students with their homework assignments in subjects such as language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Tutoring hours Monday and Wednesday from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm and/or Tuesday and Thursday 4:30pm to 5:30pm. Middle School Instructor: Create and teach your own enrichment class: We are looking for volunteers to instruct their own class utilizing their own skills. Instructor will be given the creative freedom to design their own curriculum and encouraged to bring new ideas and possibilities to the class. Possible classes can be a film, dance, foreign language, sport, science, video game, or comic book class. Volunteer hours requested: Monday or Wednesday 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm or 5:30 pm to 6:30pm (1 hour per week). Deadline: April 4th PAT/High School High School Tutors/Homework Assistance: Volunteers are needed to help students with their homework assignments in subjects such as algebra, physics, calculus, geometry, biology, chemistry, economics, history, and English. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Monday – Thursday from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. We can work with the volunteer and create a consistent schedule.


Administrative Support Volunteer: Volunteer s will be working on administrative work such as data entry, creating excel sheets with information, etc. Would like volunteers with experience with data entry and office administration. Volunteer hours requested: Monday-Thursday 12:00 pm-4:00 pm (2-4 hour shifts/flexible). High School Instructor: We are looking for volunteers to teach their own classes using their own expertise and skills. Create and teach your own enrichment class to primarily 9th/10th grade students. Instructor will be given the creative freedom to design their own curriculum and encouraged to bring new ideas and possibilities to the class. Possible classes can be a dance, foreign language, sport, science, creative writing or public speaking class. Volunteer hours requested: Monday or Wednesday 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm or 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm (1 hour per week). Deadline: April 4th ART Artist Mentors: We are looking for committed individuals to assist our students and instructors in their classes. Volunteers will help prepare materials and mentor students. Volunteers do not need a background in art to get involved. Examples of classes that need assistance are painting, new media, paper crafts, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, and/or ceramics. Volunteers are needed: Monday -Thursday 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm and Friday 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm (1-6 hours per week). Academic Tutor: We are looking for volunteers to provide homework support for Art Focus students. Volunteers will provide one-to-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: Monday-Wednesday from 3:30 pm - 4:30pm. Volunteer needed for at least one hour a week. Music/YOLA at HOLA Music Homework Tutors and Class Assistants: Homework Tutoring Volunteers: YOLA at HOLA is in need of volunteers to assist students (grades 1-6) with completing and understanding their homework. Duties would include assisting the YOLA at HOLA Academic Tutoring Faculty, helping students who are struggling with homework, assisting students with special projects and acting as a positive role model and mentor. Volunteer hours requested: Any consistent weekly time(s) Monday-Thursday from 3:30 pm-5:30 pm. Office Facilty Assistant: Volunteer would assist on helping with basic office tasks such as maintaining and organizing the music library, instruments, office space, help with attendance and helping set up for ensembles. Volunteer must have strong Microsoft Excel Skills and previous experience in a library with a strong knowledge of Library of Congress Catalog System. Volunteer hours requested: Any consistent time(s) Monday- Thursday 3:00 pm-5:30 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am-10:00 am. Private Teachers: In need of advanced high school volunteers(will be considered upon audition)/ college level (PREFERRED)volunteers that can come teach privately and do individual lessons to strengthen our kids musicianship. We need flute, tuba, trumpet, french horn, viola, clarinet, bassoon, trombone and percussion volunteer players. Volunteers will help out during orchestra rehearsals and other needs if need be. Volunteers that feel confident to teach students individually and are accustomed to working with children of beginning to intermediate level musicianship. Volunteer hours requested: Saturdays 9:00 am12:00 pm or 1:00 pm.


Jazz/Big Band Volunteers: YOLA at HOLA is in need of musicians of all levels who play instruments typically used in a Jazz band. Come and foster our beginning to intermediate level students (grades 4-11). -High level of proficiency on instrument -College/professional music experience(Advanced high school and Amateur musicians with high proficiency invited to interview). Knowledge of music theory/ Improvisation and Music programs (i.e. Finale) -Instruments of need include: Percussion: Knowledge on Xylophone/ Vibraphone, Drums, Congas and other jazz percussion instruments - Saxophone (doubles on Flute and Clarinet) - Trombonist who can play Jazz - Jazz Trumpet player and Violin player who can transcend through different musical genres. -Volunteers are required to: come early to all rehearsals and help set up the room, stay late after all rehearsals and help strike the room, teach sections of the band while the instructor is working one on one with a different section, learn all the music to memory and be able to help anyone in the ensemble and be a positive role model to our children, remain flexible and willing to help in any way as it comes up, continue to learn and participate along with the rest of the ensemble, and be present for almost all the rehearsals and performances. Volunteer hours: Wednesdays 6:30 pm-7:30 pm and Fridays 4:00 pm-7:00 pm. Junior Rock Band: YOLA at HOLA is in need of musicians of all levels who play instruments typically used in a Rock band. Volunteers are needed to come and work with our beginning to intermediate level students (grades 4-11). Requirements: -High level of proficiency on instrument -College/professional music experience (Advanced high school and amateur musicians with high proficiency invited to interview). Must have knowledge of music theory/ ear training. Instruments of need include: Strings: Guitar, Electric Guitars, Electric Bass. -Percussion: knowledge on drums, congas and other percussion instruments. Vocals - Keyboards Woodwinds: Saxophones -Flutes - Brass: Trombones etc. -Volunteers are required to: come early to all rehearsals and help set up the room, stay late after all rehearsals and help strike the room, teach sections of the band while the instructor is working one on one with a different section, learn all the music to memory and be able to help anyone in the ensemble and being a positive role model to our children, remain flexible and willing to help in any way as it comes up, continue to learn and participate along with the rest of the ensemble, and be present for almost all the rehearsals and performances. Volunteer hours: Tuesdays 6:30 pm- 7:30 pm. Choir: Looking for volunteers that are in college or professionals with music experience. (Advanced high school and amateur with high proficiency musicians are invited to interview). The volunteer should know music theory/ Solfege. Volunteer will assist teacher(s) during rehearsals, help with class tasks (i.e. making copies) and be a positive role model to our children. Volunteer hours: Any consistent time(s) Mondays and Tuesdays 3:30 pm- 6:30 pm and Saturdays 9:00 am- 10:50 am.

Athletics Coach: Volunteers are needed to assist with coaching basketball and soccer. Volunteers must have some experience coaching youth and know the rules and regulations of each sport. Volunteers must be


consistent with their hours and availability. Volunteer hours requested: Monday-Friday 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Saturdays 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (4+ hours per week). Communications Graphic Designer: The Communications Department is looking for someone with design experience to help with a number of projects. Work can be done from home . Photographer: HOLA is turning 25! We are in need of some new photos. We are looking for someone who has strong photography skills to take some portrait photos of our kids and activities around campus. We are flexible with hours.
