Volunteer/Internship Opportunities for Summer 2014 Monday, June 16- Friday, July 25 In neighborhoods often overrun by poverty, crime and a feeling of hopelessness, Heart of Los Angeles invests in youth to build stronger communities. Heart of Los Angeles gives some of the city’s most vulnerable youth a chance to succeed in life. At Heart of Los Angeles, we depend upon the commitment and dedication of our talented staff and volunteers to offer the breadth and depth of programming that we provide at no charge to our families. We are looking for volunteers from all fields who have just a little extra time or can commit to coming on a regular basis. We understand how valuable the time of our volunteers is and we utilize their time effectively. For every child, there is a volunteer who can foster lasting change. We have many opportunities for this summer in which you, a relative or a friend could help make a difference in the Los Angeles community. If you can give as little as one hour a week, we want you! Please see below for a list of opportunities: Counseling and Social Work Services Counseling/Social Work Intern: Seeking interns that can commit 6-12 hours a week to provide short-term counseling to kids and teens and college Alumni under the supervision of the in house Counselor/Social Worker. We are looking for an MFT, an MSW student or graduate student. SmartStart/Elementary School SmartStart Intern: We are looking for interns who have experience working with youth, can communicate both orally and in writing and can commit 15-20 hours per week and maintain consistency with their hours. Interns will support staff and facilitate with academic classes and supervise students. Must enjoy working with children, have professional demeanor and a desire to serve as a role model to youth. Skills: proficiency in Word and Excel. Intern Hours requested: Monday-Friday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. SmartStart Volunteer: Volunteers needed who have experience working with youth, can communicate both orally and in writing and can commit to 10-15 hours a week and maintain consistency with their hours. Volunteers will support staff and supervise students. Must enjoy working with children, have professional demeanor and a desire to serve as a role model to youth. High School Intern: The High School Department is seeking an education intern to develop the college access curriculum for 9th-12th grade students. The intern should possess an interest and passion for developing high quality and research-based lesson plans and activities that expand college knowledge, promote goal-setting and preparation for the college application process. The intern should also possess an interest in building connections with partner organizations in the college access field. This position is ideal for a current undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Education, Social Work, the Social Sciences, or a related field. The position requires a commitment of 6-12 hours/week. Transition "Bigs": Every summer, the High School Department welcomes the rising 9th graders ("Littles") into our Transitions program. We invite HOLA rising high school seniors and HOLA alumni to volunteer as "Bigs" and take the lead in welcoming the "Littles" into the high school department. "Bigs" will be an integral part of programming from Monday, June 16Friday ,June 20, and will also participate in our weekend leadership camp, from July 11-13. *College Access Mentors: Every year, thanks to the dedication and support of our volunteer mentors, over 50 high school seniors - the majority of whom are the first in their families to go to college - complete the college application process, the financial aid process, and successfully transition to post-secondary education. Because of volunteer mentor support, HOLA continues to have a near 100% college matriculation rate among our high school students. HOLA is now actively recruiting mentors for the 2014-2015 school year. Mentors become part of the high school community, and an important part of our Seniors' lives. Mentors commit to participating in 4-6 hours of programming on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays each month, August through May. HOLA mentors receive over 15 hours of training in July and August, as well as 24 hours of training and support every month. Visual ART VAD Summer Program Intern: We are looking for interns who have experience working with youth, can communicate both orally and in writing and can commit 10-20 hours per week and maintain consistency with their hours. Interns will supervise students during programming, teach/lead workshops, serve as a mentor, partake in organizational events (fundraisers, exhibitions, workshop etc.), and other duties as assigned. Interns must be able to work effectively in a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, and maintain a professional demeanor. Skills: proficiency in Word and Excel, with a college degree or currently in college (PREFERRED). Intern Hours requested: Monday-Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm. VAD Summer Program Volunteer: We are looking for volunteers who have experience working with youth, can communicate both orally and in writing. Volunteers must be able to multi-task in a busy work environment and have a strong desire to work with youth. Duties include: supervising students, help transport students from one location to another and


participation in organizational events. Volunteer must be able to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, and maintain a professional demeanor. We ask that volunteers commit to 5-10 hours per week. Volunteer hours requested: Monday-Friday 9:00am to 1:00pm. Music/YOLA at HOLA Front Desk Volunteer: We are looking for volunteers who are responsible and have good customer service skills. Volunteers will manage the front desk by signing in and out adults that enter the building. Volunteers will also help with communication with the parents, passing out flyers and supervising students that are arriving and leaving the program. Volunteer hours are flexible: 9am-12pm/ 12pm-4pm. Camp Counselor: We are looking for a volunteers who can be a positive role model to young students. Volunteers should enjoy working with young students, doing arts & crafts, and planning fun games and different camp activities. Preferably volunteers will have some background working as a camp counselor. Volunteer hours requested: 1 hour per week, Thursdays from 11am-12pm Academic Tutor: Volunteers needed who enjoy working with students, are interested in working in a classroom setting, and have experience managing classes. Volunteer will be supporting and facilitating academic enrichment classes. Classes include supporting first graders with reading and writing, supporting fifth graders with transition to middle school. We request that volunteers have college level experience or equivalent. Volunteer Hours Requested: 10-15 Hours a week. Mon. 9:30am-11pm; Tues. 9:30am-12pm; Weds. 2pm-4pm; Thurs. 11am-1pm Transition Volunteer: Seeking volunteers who enjoy working with students, interested in working in a classroom setting and can support staff in helping students transition from grade levels. Volunteers will be supporting academic enrichment classes that will contain the following: Organization, homework relevance, communication (learning "I" statements), peer pressure, gender issues and identity. We request that volunteers have college level experience or equivalent. Volunteer Hours Requested: 10-15 Hours a week. Mon. 10am-11pm; Tues. 1pm4pm; Weds. 2pm-4pm; Thurs. 11am-12pm. Classroom Aides: We are looking for volunteers who can serve as a positive role model for students and has a desire to work alongside teachers and students. Volunteers will support teachers in music class with signing students in and out and other duties as needed. Volunteer Hours Requested: 9am-4pm. Hours are Flexible. Trombone/Trumpet Teacher: In search of volunteers who are proficient with the instrument, who have college/professional music experience, or advanced high school musicians, amateur


musicians with high proficiency invited to interview. Volunteer will be giving trombone/trumpet lessons and solos to group classes and individual students. Ideally, volunteer would be available during the following hours: Tues. 3pm-4pm, but dates and times are flexible. Private Lesson Teachers: Volunteers, who can provide private lessons to students in Tuba, Euphonium, Clarinet, Horn, Violin, Viola, Cello, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Cello. Volunteer Teacher must be proficient with the instrument, we prefer college/professional music experience but welcome Advance High School musicians and amateur musicians. Volunteer hours requested are flexible. Orchestral Percussionist: We are looking for volunteers who are proficient with the instrument, who have college/professional music experience, or advanced high school musicians, amateur musicians with high proficiency invited to interview. Volunteer will support percussions ensemble and Lessons with YOLA at HOLA teachers. Volunteer hours requested: Mon. & Tues. 9pm-2pm. Jazz Volunteer: We are searching for volunteers who are proficient in the genre of jazz, who have college/professional music experience. Advanced high school musicians, and amateur musicians with high proficiency are also invited to interview. We need volunteers to assist with the following instruments: Drums, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, and bass. Duties include assisting with rehearsal at different times, teaching students and being present at performances. Volunteer hours requested: Mon. 1pm-5pm or Fri. 2pm-5:30pm Junior Rock Band: Volunteers who are proficient in the rock genre, who have college/professional music experience. Advanced high school musicians, and amateur musicians with high proficiency are also invited to interview. We are looking for volunteers who are familiar with strings, percussion, woodwinds, brass, and vocals. Volunteers will be assisting with classroom duties and helping students out with gaining a better understanding of the instruments. Volunteer hours requested: Tues. 4pm-6pm. Athletics Volleyball Intern: Intern needed to assist with teaching/coaching volleyball to High School students. Must have prior experience in volleyball and must be familiar with the equipment utilized for the sport. Sport Intern Hours Requested: 2-4 hours a week. Administrative Intern: Seeking intern to assist with clerical work and running an athletics office. Must be able to multitask in a busy working environment, must be Google docs savvy and type 20-30 wpm. Intern Hours Requested: 3-5 hours a week.


Summer Active Camp Volunteer: Volunteers needed to assist Active Camp Counselors, must be able to work with students ages 7-14 under various weather conditions. Able to Multi-task in a busy working environment. Volunteer must be Fun, Excited and Full of Energy. Volunteer Hours Requested: Monday to Friday at 12:00pm. 10-20 hrs Per Week.
