Summertime
AND THE LOVIN’ IS EASY It’s a time for reflection and to find a bit of peace. The stillness of the Lake District landscapes offers the chance to be surrounded by lush green countryside, and still waters or a gentle stream. Watch the world go by, lay back and enjoy the clouds scudding across the blue sky, hear the bird song and the lambs bleating and just be.
Away from our screens for a while, perhaps enjoying a wild swim, a fell walk, a potter around a lake or just sitting in a café or pub garden and relaxing. Or perhaps you’ll choose to simply enjoy the outside space around your holiday home, reading the papers or a book. All is here for you in the Lakes. Whatever you choose it’s a great chance to slow down and take our foot off the pedal for a while. Reboot, if you like. And the joy of being together again, as a family or group of friends feels incredibly emotional. The things we perhaps used to take for granted – preparing a meal together, talking about our day, laughter, and banter with each other, tired but happy silences as we watch the sunset together. Sharing an early morning cuppa or late-night sundowner. If you’re seeking some adrenaline, outdoor bike rides, swims, or bagging a few Wainwrights, the long summer days and staying light till almost midnight means you can fit a lot more into your day. Imagine how relaxed you’ll feel after a day on the fells and enjoying a well-earned local beer. Our friends at Cumbria Wildlife Trust are running their ’30 Days Wild’ campaign again throughout June. A chance to really seek out nature, to share what you find and enjoy the benefits of this natural mood-enhancer. Read more on page 20. Wild swimming during lockdown has seen a huge surge in popularity. Something to do with the freedom water gives, along with the endorphins and the general feeling of wellbeing and joy from taking a dip. We have many lakes and tarns to choose from – have a read of our piece on page 53 for 5 of our favourites. However you choose to spend your summer, we wish you a wonderful break, and hope you leave the Lakes refreshed and re-energised and able to jump back into life again.

This itinerary will guide you through exploring in the Lake District this Summer.
Longer summer days and warmer weather marks the start of outdoor theatre, summer shows, picnic season and strawberry teas. So, dig out the picnic basket, shake out the rug and start planning summer afternoon and dusky evenings, chilled fizz and strawberries. It’s fair to say that outdoor theatre is for the dedicated, the curious, the adventurous – it goes ahead whatever the weather – and I’ve enjoyed them on balmy summer days and stormy evenings overlooking moody lakes –without exception they’ve all been memorable. The trick is to be prepared. Take the advice of a seasoned regular – you can’t have too much stuff! Seating is not provided. A rug is essential, a low back chair for comfort, an umbrella – for shade or rain protection! And a well-stocked picnic basket (and check out if the venue is doing takeaways or BBQs) Be a weather optimist - pack the sunscreen and a hat. This year it feels even more exciting - getting back to live performances, supporting actors, musicians, and production crews – and the adventure of doing it all in the open air. We’re British after all! Here’s my roundup of what’s on this summer! The Merry Wives of Windsor are visiting two of our heritage gardens this summer. Five actors, with all manner of musical instruments, with an inventive take on Shakespeare’s raucous comedy at Lowther Castle
on Tuesday 29 June and then on to Muncaster Castle on Friday 2 July both start at 7pm. Prepare for a lively event as The Three-Inch Fools give this Shakespearean classic the full ‘Fools’ treatment with lots of live musicmaking, deft physicality, vibrant story-telling with quick costume change along the way! Book tickets in advancelowthercastle.org and muncaster.co.uk. Let’s stay with Shakespeare as we encounter The Tempest – blowing up a storm (well, we hope not!) at Talkin Tarn Country Park on Thursday 8 July. Shakespeare specialists The Pantaloons Theatre Company take us on a voyage to an enchanted island full of adventure, romance, magic and… monsters in the Bard’s brilliant tale of shipwrecks, sorcerers and silly servants. Starts at 7pm. Book online, thepantaloons.co.uk/the-tempest/ . Holker Hall presents Tales of Oz, for a proper family day out on Saturday 10 July. It will take us on a different road to adventure, this time a yellow brick road – as we’re off to see the Wizard. The whole garden is the stage, and your little Munchkins will literally travel with Dorothy to the Emerald City on a charming ‘walk along, sing a long adventure’. Pack your pop and cupcakes for the picnic
basket. Sessions start from 10am, last one at 4.30pm, fun for all ages 3+ - holker.co.uk/event/tales-of-oz/ The popular outdoor theatre company, Illyria bring the Further Adventures of Doctor Doolittle to Brantwood’s meadow on the shore of Coniston. Featuring a fully orchestrated score, amazing puppets, and a plethora of songs - you’ll be singing all the way home! Perfect summer fun for everyone aged 5+. The Terrace café is also open. Friday 20 August Book ahead to ensure your spot in the meadow! brantwood.org.uk And finally, for our theatre program, The Fools return to present the world’s best-known love story, Romeo and Juliet at The Lakes Distillery! On Sunday 25 July at 4pm. This romantic epic promises to be a carnival of passion and imagination and live music-making. Book your tickets asap – I’ve a feeling this might prove a popular venue! lakesdistillery.com After many cancellations last year, we’re delighted that some of our historic houses are back with their popular annual events. Head south to Holker Hall as they welcome the Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club for their annual The Car’s the Star Show on Sunday 11 July. Held in the spectacular parkland surrounding the Hall, the event will include displays from all eras (I’ll be looking out for the 1960’s Rambler
Ambassador or a fine Jaguar E-Type!) – with classes and awards for all types of vehicles – as well as arena displays, trade stands and autojumble this show’s not just for the petrol heads. Tickets from Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club: klmc.co.uk An annual favourite of mine and one I particularly missed last year is Potfest In The Park. Set in the backdrop of Hutton-in-the-Forest, Potfest has become a place of pilgrimage for makers, collectors and admirers of the finest contemporary ceramics. It’s great to make a purchase, but just as lovely to look and chat to the makers. I remember on my last visit being entertained by a local band and eating some delish ice cream – I can’t wait! Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th July, 23. Checkout potfest. co.uk/in-the-park Whatever the weather this summer it’s going to be hot, hot, hot at the Holker Chilli Fest. A 2-day Festival with specialist chilli companies from all over the country, local specialist food suppliers, cuisine from around the world and a variety of quirky, fiery foodinspired gifts up at Holker Hall. Fear not, they also cater for the non-spice lover and have plenty of family friendly entertainment. Things start heating up at 10.30am on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September.
Please check for the most up-to-date information about opening times, special events and, in some cases, how to prebook your visit. Dogs on a lead are allowed at many of my listed events – but check before you go. Don’t leave your dog in the car.

Take a trip on the
Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway
If you love the romantic age of steam, what better than chugging alongside England’s largest lake, with a homemade tea and scone and enjoying the view away to the fells? Set in the picturesque Leven Valley at the southern end of Windermere, this historic branch line has been delighting visitors since 1973, run by a small band of staff and volunteers. Dogs are welcome on the train free of charge (but not on the seats!) There’s a good-sized car park at the Lakes Aquarium, Lakeside, just up the road from Newby Bridge, or you can use the smaller car park at Haverthwaite itself. Tickets are purchased online now so buy before you go – you can simply buy a train ticket or a train and boat ticket. https://www. lakesiderailway.co.uk/tickets/
use any car park around the lake, cruise, ride on the train and visit attractions however you like – details on the website. There’s also a café at the Train Station with views across the Lake to Fell Foot Park. In the same area you can explore the Lakes Aquarium, and the Motor Museum, and hop on a Windermere Lake Cruise. Also, whilst you’re in the area why not have a visit to Stott Park Bobbin Mill – run by English Heritage and the only working bobbin mill left in Cumbria today. Fancy a walk? Head up to High Dam a tranquil spot which is also good for a dip. Across the lake Fell Foot Park has lots of footpaths and trails, and you can hire rowboats and kayaks. They also have a café. Nearby pubs and hotels such as the Swan, the Lakeside, and the Newby Bridge Hotel all have great bars, lovely food, and great outdoor seating areas.
There’s a rather neat Park, Rail & Sail ticket, whereby you can

Cumbria Wildlife Trust Our natural world is in trouble and wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate and it’s crucial that we all continue to make more space for nature, to give our struggling wildlife the chance to recover and to restore beautiful wild places. We caught up with Michelle Waller, from Cumbria Wildlife Trust, to tell us more about their campaign: #30DaysWild.
contact with nature this June, by doing a ‘random act of wildness’ every day for 30 days: listen to bees buzzing, taking wildlife photographs, star-gazing or taking your coffee-break watching birds from your window. It doesn’t need to be complicated; you don’t need to have any special knowledge and it needn’t take long –enjoy the time you take and just a few minutes a day is enough to benefit us and to notice what is out there!
Tell us about the work of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and why it’s so important. We’re the only voluntary organisation that’s devoted to the conservation of the wildlife and wild places of Cumbria, by looking after nature reserves, which are refuges for threatened plants and animals, as well as being unspoilt places that you can visit. We also focus on projects to protect certain species and habitats, like bumblebees, hay meadows and peat bogs.
#30DaysWild has been going since 2015 and since then we estimate that over 1 million people have taken part nationwide! Our research with the University of Derby on show that taking part in 30 Days Wild increases people’s wellbeing and heightened sense of nature long after the challenge is over.
Over the last year people have realised how important contact with nature and the natural environment is. The nature reserves we care for and the work we do over the whole of Cumbria gives people a place to ‘take that breath’ and enjoy natural surroundings. What is 30 Days wild and what does it achieve?
It’s free to take part and there are packs for businesses, schools, and care homes.
#30DaysWild is our annual nature challenge – we’re encouraging everyone to enjoy the benefits of daily
How can our guests best enjoy wildlife when they are in the Lakes on a visit?

Early summer is a wonderful time to enjoy wildlife in Cumbria - walk in woods full of the sight and scent of bluebells and enjoy the hay meadows in bloom. We have 38 nature reserves for people to visit and lots of free guides to download showing great places to see wildlife all over Cumbria – from butterflies and red squirrels to sand dunes and birds of prey. There’s also our series of Wildlife Walks, with walks off the beaten track, where you might spot all kinds of wildlife, from grey seals and buzzards. Full details at www.cumbriawildlifetrust.org. uk And how can they support wildlife and the work of the Trust? • Create a hole in your fence for hedgehogs! • Make sure you choose peat-free compost for your garden. • Plant wildflower seeds to help the butterflies & bees. • Do a day’s volunteering for us • Donate to help our conservation work. • Follow and share our social media to raise awareness • Become a member from £39 a year – receive a welcome pack, free Nature Reserve Guide, colour magazine and lots of ideas to get involved.
hay meadows left in existence, making them the most threatened and vulnerable wildlife habitats in Cumbria. We’re working to transform the hay meadows at our newest nature reserve Bowber Head Farm. From June visitors will have the chance to see the wildflowers in these meadows in full bloom – it’s a glorious sight! Grey Seal: We have Cumbria’s only colony of breeding grey seal at South Walney near Barrow. The colony has grown hugely in recent years, largely because of the huge efforts that we’ve made to avoid disturbance to the seals – our latest count is 518! Everyone loves red squirrels, and they can be seen at many sites around the county. Smardale Nature Reserve is a great place to try and spot them, though it’s easier in the autumn and winter, when there are fewer leaves on the tree for them to hide in. Not quite so cute but equally important is peat bogs. We do lots of work to restore damaged peat bog habitats and to protect healthy ones. Bogs are very efficient at keeping carbon locked away, so they are important in our fight against climate change. Where’s your favourite place for wildlife spotting in the county?
What’s the most exciting project of the moment? Ospreys: We’re really excited the pair of ospreys have returned to our Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve and we’re expecting their chicks to hatch any minute! (Check out our live osprey cam showing you ‘life on the nest’). We’re so lucky to have these majestic birds of prey in Cumbria, building their nests. Hay Meadows: There are only 900 hectares of northern
I’m not sure I can pick a favourite and it’s going to get me in so much trouble! I love walking in the woodlands at Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve. It’s great year-round, but the bluebells, primroses and orchids always remind me of my mum and make me smile. Just stopping for a moment to listen to the birds and the leaves in the breeze is relaxing and the dragonflies and butterflies are a joy to see.

Like many people – I got more into swimming outdoors last year. A friend has convinced me to complete 50 swims before September – but more importantly, done in the right place and with the right care, it’s good for my health and fun and sociable too!
A lot of people forget that Cumbria has a huge, beautiful, coast – we spend so long with our backs to the sea looking at the hills! Just turn around and you might see dolphins and basking sharks out to sea. South Walney Nature Reserve (just across the bridge from Barrow) is spectacular – especially when all the wading birds are staying over. We also have a powered ‘tramper’ there which means people who need to use one can borrow this and get around the nature reserve.
I also just enjoy sitting in my backyard, watching the butterflies and bees on my pots of flowers and bullfinches on my feeders (maybe with a cuppa in my hand and homemade cake).
Another great spot is Eycott Hill, with fabulous views over Blencathra, where you feel like you’re on top of the world without having to hike up a steep slope.
Credit: Michelle Waller
What do you do to relax? I love being in, on or next to water - rivers, lakes, and the sea. It’s amazing how the sound of water can replace the ‘noise’ of everyday life in my head. There’s a river running through the middle of the town where I live and just a couple of minutes from my house. During lockdown, I’ve walked next to the river virtually every day – and enjoyed noticing the changes in the plants and the wildlife too. It’s great watching a busy dipper or graceful heron and occasionally see the otter gliding through the water or the iridescent flash of a kingfisher.

Sunflower Appeal
St John’s Hospice provides care, compassion and support to patients, families and the wider community across North Lancashire, the South Lakes and parts of North Yorkshire and have been doing so for 35 years. We’re delighted to be headline sponsors of their brilliant ‘Sunflower’ Appeal- representing love, strength and vibrancy at this very difficult time. They are inviting people to dedicate a sunflower to a loved one and support their local Hospice at the same time. Each £35 donation buys one metalwork sunflower that will combine to make up two flower installations in Lancaster and South Lakeland and will be open to the community, to visit, photograph and enjoy, in a similar way to the poppy displays over the past few years. After the installations, each sunflower will be available to collect by each donor and taken home to be displayed or gifted on to a loved one. The Sykes family are supporting the campaign in many different ways and we hope to raise the profile of the Sunflower Appeal and raise much-needed funds for this brilliant local charity. SIMON ROGAN in conversation
We were fortunate enough to catch up with Simon Rogan earlier this summer to find out a little about the award-winning chef and pioneer of the farm-to-table movement. Simon’s restaurants in the UK and Hong Kong currently hold four Michelin stars between them, and in 2021, L’Enclume and Roganic Hong Kong were both awarded the newly introduced Michelin Green Star, making Simon the only chef globally to have received a green star on two continents. What motivates you?
the age of 12, and it went from there.
I’m fortunate to work with an incredibly dedicated team, which makes being a chef the best job in the world.
My dad worked at a wholesale fruit and veg market, and that came with a few perks, including being able to take home whatever he wanted at the end of the day. Some of the stuff he brought back at the time was pretty exotic. Finding out what you could do with those more unusual ingredients made me more and more interested in food.
I’ve always tried to push boundaries and be the best that I can be, which drives me forward. Inventing dishes with the freshest ingredients from my own farm and creating a unique and unforgettable experience for our guests is incredibly rewarding. That’s always motivated me and helped me continue to develop as a chef.
When did you start working in a commercial kitchen? At the age of 15, I decided to go to college because I knew I wanted to work with food. By the time I’d turned 17, I managed to get an apprenticeship at the Rhinefield House Hotel in the New Forest, working under Paul Norman, a former head chef at the Savoy. This opportunity kick-started my career and gave me a sound understanding of classical cooking.
How did you become interested in cooking? I grew up in Southampton. Both my mum and dad worked really long hours, so to help out, I used to cook the family meals. I started cooking at home from about
26
A few years later, I went up to London and worked under some serious chefs, including the likes of Jean-Christophe Novelli, Marco Pierre White and John Burton-Race, who each gave me a crash course in modern cooking techniques.
How do you like to spend your time off?
How did you end up in Cumbria?
I enjoy cycling as there are some great rides in Cumbria, with some pretty big hills - Tow Top can make life interesting if you fancy a steep 20% climb, with a few hairpin bends thrown in for good luck! Thankfully, there are some flat rides too, like those in the Lyth and Winster valleys and the marsh causeways around Heversham and Meathop.
It’s been full-on since we opened L’Enclume, but it’s been worth it. Cumbria is my home now; I live just up the road from the restaurant in a little village nearby.
Moving to Cumbria came about by accident really, I’d been looking for somewhere to buy in the southeast but couldn’t find anywhere. I’d always wanted to work for myself and start my own restaurant. I guess it’s what any chef wants to achieve, and I wasn’t going to be able to do that working for someone else.
The good thing about being in the Lakes is that you can step out of your front door and be in an amazing landscape pretty much instantly. There are lots of great walks to enjoy, and if you know what you’re doing, places to forage too, Colwith Force is a great little walk near Elterwater. We’re lucky we’ve got the coast too, there are some fantastic beaches like Silecroft and Drigg, which most people haven’t heard of.
In 2002, a property agent got in touch out of the blue about a building in the Lakes. I went up to have a look and instantly fell in love with what I saw. I put an offer on the train back to London, much to the surprise of my partner Penny. The building in question was a 13th century former Blacksmith’s forge in the medieval village of Cartmel, now home to L’Enclume. So, nearly 20 years ago, we sold everything we had, car, stereo, furniture and our house, to make the huge move to the Lakes. I’m not going to claim it was an easy move. Food in Cumbria at the time was very different, and customers expected hearty platefuls rather than what I had in mind. We had to let out the rooms above the restaurant to make ends meet, but over time, we made the connection between the landscape around us and the restaurant. As a result, people began to understand what we were trying to do. Slowly but surely, we began building a name for ourselves and our aim of delivering a truly traceable dining experience.
We’ve also got an ever-growing number of cafes and restaurants to explore too, like Plumgarths near Kendal, home to Lovingly Artisan Bakery and the Wagtail Kitchen; and Unsworth’s Yard in Cartmel, where you can find Cartmel Cheeses and Unsworth’s Brewery. You’ve also got The Lakes Distillery at Setmurthy near Bassenthwaite; The Black Bull and Three Hares Deli in Sedbergh, all of which are helping to put Cumbria on the food map.

About Home by Simon Rogan Home by Simon Rogan was created in the first lockdown to prevent food wastage caused by the closure of restaurants and to give back to the community. Initially, Simon and his team produced free take-home meals for vulnerable individuals and families in the surrounding area. Within a few weeks, Home by Simon Rogan had expanded to include meals for NHS staff at Furness General Hospital. After a few months and increasing demand, Simon and his team began to offer weekly ‘at home’ meals to the public living in Cumbria. Eventually, Home by Simon Rogan grew to include almost all the UK, receiving huge success and critical acclaim.

About Simon Rogan and his restaurants Simon Rogan is an internationally renowned, award-winning chef, recognised as one of the pioneers of the farm-totable movement. In 2002, Simon opened his debut restaurant L’Enclume in The Lake District village of Cartmel, with a focus on hyperlocal and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant currently holds two Michelin stars, the top spot in the Good Food Guide and five AA Rosettes. In 2017, Simon was recognised as the AA chef of the year, and is currently president of Bocuse d’Or. Simon opened Rogan & Co, his second venture in Cartmel in 2008, which won its first Michelin star in 2018 and currently holds three AA Rosettes. In 2016, Simon launched Aulis at L’Enclume, a six-seater chef’s table experience. A London outpost of Aulis arrived in October 2017 as a stand-alone dining destination, an eight-seater chefs table experience in central Soho. Roganic, Simon’s 30-cover restaurant in Marylebone’s Blandford Street opened as a permanent site in 2018. This followed the success of Roganic’s first incarnation as a Marylebone pop-up, which garnered wide acclaim throughout its two-year tenure from 2011-2013. Simon expanded his restaurant portfolio to Hong Kong, opening Aulis in January 2019 and Roganic in February 2019. Roganic Hong Kong was awarded its first Michelin star in December 2019. Simon opened Henrock in October 2019, an informal restaurant set within Linthwaite House, a contemporary country house hotel in the heart of the Lake District. In 2021, Simon’s efforts towards sustainability were recognised with the newly introduced Michelin green star, awarded to both L’Enclume and Roganic Hong Kong. Simon is the only chef globally to hold a green star on two continents.

Book early for October half term As you can imagine, the demand for staycations this year has exceeded all others. We’ve very little availability left now for the main peak of the summer holidays. If you’re thinking of an autumn break away, why not get ahead of the crowd, and secure your favourite cottage or lodge? With a deposit of only 30% and nothing else to pay until 8 weeks before, you can then relax and look forward to that special family time away. Have a read of our Autumn 2020 Magazine for ideas on things to do in the Lakes in this very special season of mists and mellowness.

YOUR FAVOURITE
LAKE DISTRICT PUBS
32
Our story in the Spring 2021 Lakes Magazine about Terry Abraham and his favourite pub, The Strands in Wasdale, got you all talking about which is your favourite pub.
Who doesn’t love a visit to a pub? We have probably hundreds throughout Cumbria and the Lake District, from traditional inns with roaring fires and steeped in history, to tiny bars, serving Cumbrian’s take on tapas, trendy spots for a cocktail or champagne and many of our favourites with fantastic beer gardens and views. And of course, many of them are dog-friendly, and will serve you amazing food too. Here’s a few of your recommendations: ‘The Golden Rule in Ambleside. It’s a true pub with no distractions, just interesting locals, friendly bar staff, good tap beers including Dizzy Blonde! Plenty of dogs, a warming fire and a super landlord and team” ‘The Unicorn in Ambleside has the most fabulous folk nights and such a friendly atmosphere’
The Sun, Coniston The Wilsons, Torver Royal Oak, Ambleside Old Dungeon Ghyll, Langdale Tower Bank Arms, Far Sawrey Hare and Hounds, Levens Ennerdale Brewery, Rowrah The Royal Oak, Bowness The Wheatsheaf, Brigsteer The Albion, Arnside Watermillock, Ings Queens Head, Troutbeck Brook House Inn, Boot Britannia Inn, Elterwater Dog and Gun, Keswick Many of you said, “I’ll settle for any at the moment!” - which we can totally agree with and we’re enjoying supporting our local pubs and bars as we move into summer.
And here’s a quick name check of some more of your favourites.

Mountain Goat
the original ‘Lake District Mini-Bus Company’ The iconic Mountain Goat bus company started running Lake District tours in 1972, and chose its name after an early customer commented that their buses climbed the Lakeland fells like a ‘mountain goat’. Their first minibus in 1972 meandered the route between Bowness-On-Windermere, to Glenridding on Ullswater, climbing steadily up and over the Kirkstone pass in all weathers, re-establishing a connection between these two fine Lakeland villages. As travellers began to enjoy using the route, the local driver would pass the time regaling his passengers with tales, myths and legends of the local area. This soon became as popular as the trip from A to B – the fact you could learn about the countryside you were driving through and hear about the history and stories of the awe-inspiring landscapes became very popular with visitors to the Lake District. This became the unique approach from Mountain Goat – local people would drive the minibusses, and although they may have known some interesting facts about places, they had to learn their version of ‘The Knowledge’ and follow a loose script about the places they were travelling through. These days it is very much a slicker operation, with routes covering all four corners of the Lake District, and daily sightseeing tours which showcase and bring to life the spectacular scenery, historic stories, and famous people of the area, by their friendly and knowledgeable driver-guides. Today, the company’s brand-new fleet of luxury Mercedes Sprinters takes tourists all over the Lakes and further afield into the Borders. Choose from the Ten Lakes Spectacular, Beatrix Potter’s Favourite Countryside, The High Adventure, Best of the Lake District, Heart of the Lakes or even Six Lakes in a Morning. They provide exclusive group hire, perhaps for a family day out, or if a group of you are travelling here together, perhaps you’re planning a different kind of special celebration. They also offer walking guide services, and the ‘Cross Lakes Experience’ Bus Service as well as touring holidays in the North and Borders. Sit back and let yourself be driven around in comfort and style by a Guide who can bring to life the landscapes and legends all around you. Mountain Goat are offering our Guests a 20% discount of all scheduled and private tours. Simply use the code: COTTAGES20 at the checkout, valid until 31/10/2021.

The Lake District Village Guide
Pooley Bridge
44
Pooley Bridge is a vibrant little village in an awesome location right at the head of Ullswater. The river Eamont runs out of the lake here, down through Eamont Bridge, where it joins the River Eden, near Langwathby. During Storm Desmond in 2015, the famous 18th century bridge was washed away into the lake. It has now been replaced with a modern stainless steel and stone version, linking the road around the lake again. With a great choice of pubs, shops, restaurants and cafes, and walks from the village centre, you can easily spend a lovely few days exploring and getting to know Pooley Bridge and its neighbouring villages and hamlets. It’s easily accessible from Junction 40 of the M6, and Ullswater Steamers call here on many of their circular cruises around the lake.
Where to walk
Devil’s Bridge
The Ullswater Way
The Ullswater Way The Ullswater Way was launched a couple of years ago, and you can tackle parts of it or the whole lot – it’s 21 miles with an option to extend out to Lowther. The Howtown to Glenridding walk we believe is one of the most beautiful lakeshore walks you would ever find. Head south from PB alongside the car park and the lakeshore down to Waterfoot farm and campsite. Simply follow the waymarked footpath meandering its way alongside the lake, passing through Patterdale, Side Farm and then back along to Glenridding. You can then explore the village and its pubs and jump on a Steamer to take you back up the lake to Pooley Bridge. What a great day out.

A cruise on the Lake The iconic Ullswater Steamers with their red chimneys and serene gliding style go up and down the lake 364 days of the year. You can jump on a cruise at Pooley Bridge, and go exploring the other drop off points of Glenridding, Aira Force and Howtown.

Ciao!
Get your gelato fix right here in the Lakes Summer means warm days, and balmy nights, and what better than homemade ice cream to keep you cool. Not just any old ice-cream though – this is slow-churned, small-batch Italian Gelato. In the heart of the Lake District. Yum! We caught up with Amy, who brought gelato to Cumbria when she dreamed up The Little Ice Cream Shop at Hawkshead. 5 years on and with a second shop in Windermere, they create over 40 delicious flavours of gelato, along with sorbets and dairy free options too. Each day brings a choice of around 22 flavours to both shops.
and mentions from LateRooms.com, and Lancashire & Lake District Life magazine.
Isn’t gelato just Italian for ice cream? Yes, but gelato is creamier, smoother and has less fat than traditional English ice cream. Almost guilt-free! We source our milk & cream from a local dairy in Windermere – we know that Cumbrian cows are the happiest cows How did you get into making gelato? I opened the Little Ice Cream Shop in 2016, when I was 18 and trying to save up enough money to move to that there London and train as an actor. My little shop in Hawkshead proved popular and word spread, and we ended up with queues outside the door. I then persuaded my mum and dad to help me expand the ice-cream empire, and in July 2018, the Little Ice Cream Shop #2 was born in Windermere. Amy did eventually move to London and is now a professional TV actress. You may see her behind the scenes in Hawkshead making ice cream into the wee small hours in the summer. The company has gone from strength to strength and has won awards and plaudits from Cumbria Life Magazine Taste Awards- Readers’ Choice Awards, Olive Magazine, Best Artisan Ice-cream producers in the UK, 48
They serve 22 flavours each day but make over 40 – with some intriguing names and flavours: Kendal Mintcake, My Ex’s Soul, Houston we have Biscoff, Let that Mango and amazing classics like Lakeland Cream, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Indulgence and Strawberry Milkshake. They also create 6 gorgeous ‘sorbetto’ flavours – including 2 of my favourites, raspberry, and watermelon. So refreshing! Go on, treat yourself. #LittleIceCreamShop

Discover our favourite
wild swimming spots in the Lakes
Loughrigg Tarn
Outdoor swimming during the past year has seen a huge surge in popularity. There is something amazing about getting submerged in natural waters, and of course, the Lake District is the perfect place to enjoy it. We’ve rounded up a few of our favourite places to give it a go. We’d recommend never swimming alone, or at least letting someone know where you are going. Get yourself well kitted out with footwear and swimwear – even if you don’t use a wetsuit – footwear will protect you from rocks and reeds. The bright orange inflatable buoys are great too for spotting where you are, and also to rest on if you need to have a breather. Take a towel and warm clothing for afterwards and wash yourself and your kit when you get home. Windermere The longest lake in the Lake District, and home to huge swimming events like the Great North Swim. Be aware of the boats and ferries on the lake, so if you stay close to shore, you should be fine. Fell Foot Park has a natural ‘beach’ for easy shallow entry into the water, as does Borrans Park at the Ambleside end. Rydal Water This beautiful small lake sits next to White Moss Car Park, from where you can walk through the woodlands to the southern end of the lake. Much quieter than Windermere, you’ll only see rowing boats or paddleboards on here. Nearby is Grasmere and the village, as well as the Badger Bar, for lots of choices for hot drinks and cake after your swim.
53
Derwentwater Another one of our larger lakes, with breathtaking views right down to the ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’. Get in the water from Ashness jetty, or one of the other jetties dotted around, and Crow Park is a large open green space, ideal for a picnic and to come back to after your swim. Keswick itself is crammed with cafés and pubs so lots of choices to eat after you’ve worked up an appetite. Ullswater Another beautiful lake sitting below Helvellyn and Aira Force and home to the iconic Ullswater Steamers. Lots of places where you can get in the water – some laybys on the road round are ideally placed and you can almost park up and get into the lake. Lots of choices to eat around Glenridding and Pooley Bridge too. Loughrigg Tarn This beautiful small tarn sits under the skyline of the Langdale Pikes. A lovely quiet spot with no boats or craft. It’s just a short walk from the road to the shoreline.
