However, Ryan Alleman, senior Student Government Association (SGA) president, and Dave Johnson, executive director for the Center for Faith and Justice, are still in the process of naming the new building, working corroboratively to select a name that exemplifies Xavier’s Jesuit ideals. “We want to engage students, faculty and staff in the process of naming the three entities of campus,” Dave Johnson said. “First, the combined greenspace from the new building and in front of Gallagher. Second, the new residential complex. And third, the mezzanine inside the new complex.” In addition, each tower of the

Returning students may notice that over their summer vacation Xavier’s campus experienced a variety of changes. Namely, where the Dorothy Day House once stood now stands a completed six-floor residence and dining hall. Other construction projects that took place this summer include work on Dana Avenue, renovation of the McDonald Library, construction on Ledgewood Avenue, construction on the Campus Services building and construction on the Academic Mall. These various projects, according to the Physical Plant website, are progressing according to schedule.

Academic Mall

All of the hot and chilled water lines under the Academic Mall have been completed and all buildings on the mall are now served from the new Central Utility Plant. Demolition of the cooling tower on the Victory Parkway side of Lindner was started in mid-July. The new hot and chilled water lines that feed Gallagher are scheduled to be replaced over Christmas break.

McDonald Library The three floors of the library have all been renovated. On the first floor, the circulation desk was moved and the classroom was redone. There are new offices and bookshelves and carpets have been installed. On the second and third floors, there is an improved visible connection to the Conaton Learning Commons, seating has been increased and the building was recarpeted.

Ledgewood Avenue

Ledgewood Avenue has been closed at the rotary, deferring traffic around the new residence hall. The rotary will circle around a statue of St. Francis Xavier and monumental steps will go down the north side of the rotary.

Dana Avenue Progress was originally hindered by a wet spring, an addition of a 20 inch gas main and a lawsuit regarding how the property at Dana and Herald avenues was acquired. The ultimate goal is to widen the street at the north side of Dana Avenue. Originally, the project was to be completed by Thanksgiving, but due to the delays, the city is tentative about finishing the paving this year.

On behalf of the Xavier Newswire, welcome to Xavier University. It is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to Manresa, college classes, long nights and delicious cafeteria food. But seriously, the caf food is supposed to be really good this year. Xavier stands to offer you a wealth of memories, opportunities and fun. Let’s start with memories—be on your guard. Always remember: bad decisions make great stories. I remember my Make no first day, afmistake, ter the folks college is dropped the best me off time of your from midlife. So from M i ch i g a n . Ever yone us to you, Welcome to was both excited Xavier. but also a little bit timid and it didn’t occur to us that we were in college until after dinner when one of my roommates decided he, my two suitemates and I were to go on a quest for a classy establishment...a slight upgrade from Hooter’s. We proceeded to get lost in a rather shady area of Newport, KY. My roommate, complete garbed in preppy, Ralph Lauren Polo attire, conversed with locals at a gas station for an extended period

of time, and then proceeded to conclude the institution he would like to patronize included pregnant entertainers, which was a few miles away. I know I’ll never forget my first night at X. Here at the Newswire we look forward to hearing all about yours. Opportunities. Much like memories, opportunities can have positive or negative connotations. You may very well land a paid position because of good grades you get in college. You might have an opportunity to eat nothing but cheeseburgers until Thanksgiving (I know a guy that came close- he mixed in a chicken sandwich once or twice). You might elect not to go the class until Thanksgiving. Here, here for a land of opportunity! And last, but certainly not least, we come on the topic of fun. Not only do we hope you have fun, but we’re confident there will be fun had by all. Here are a few of our best suggestions for a good time: One: Find the strangest look-

Include team dinners the night before, official team warm-ups and team chants. Make no mistake, college is the best time of your life. So from us to you, welcome to Xavier.

cincinnati and the arts

BY Patrick Clark Arts & Entertainment Editor

Rich with history, the Queen City has one of the most expansive arts communities in the Midwest. With its many museums, including the Taft Museum of Art and the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, a world-class symphony and theater organizations worthy of Broadway, Cincinnati has much to offer those who wish to have a cultural experience. The Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal is not a place that should be missed by anyone. Currently the special exhibit on display is “Cleopatra: The Exhibition.” On view until September 15, this exhibit features artifacts from nearly 2,000 years ago during the reign of the last queen of Egypt. Also on display until September 4 is the exhibit titled “Inspired by Anne” which features the work of a local artist and fashion designer, Anne Wainscott. However, the designs are actually 70 and 80 years old as Wainscott was a designer in the 30’s and 40’s. The Cincinnati Symphony is one of the top orchestras in the country and fulfills that expectation nearly every weekend during the fall, winter and spring seasons. This season will definitely be a

treat for those interested in masterful music-making! With guest artists such as Itzach Perlman, Lang Lang and conductors of the highest order, the CSO will certainly be a place to spend an evening. On the lighter side of the classical scheme, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra will feature their new

conductor John Morris Russell on a series of concerts throughout the year with guest artists such as Wynonna Judd, Chris Botti and the famed Bernadette Peters. If you have a preference for theater or ballet, the Aronoff Center for the Arts has a ticket waiting for you. Features on stage this year are Wicked, Carmen (bal-

let), West Side Story and The Rite of Spring among many others. If comedy is more your taste, check out Funny Bone Comedy Club and Restaurant in Newport on the Levee. Featuring various comedians, the Funny Bone has a relaxing and entertaining atmosphere where an evening with friends can be well

The Name of the Wind BY Patrick Clark Arts & Entertainment Editor

Generally when I go into a bookstore I’m pretty overwhelmed by the expansive number of fantasy novels from which to choose. This being the case, I normally would then turn my back to that section, not wanting to go through the pain of reading all back covers telling stories of knights, wizards and dragons. However, on this most recent trip to the bookstore I was feeling more motivated, so I started perusing that which I normally avoid. I was not disappointed. The Name of the Wind is the first novel in a trilogy by author Patrick Rothfuss telling the story of one Kvothe. From the very beginning, the reader is intrigued by the character’s simplistic, yet illusive description of himself. It reads, “I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon... I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during the day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.” This first page not only kept me going for all 900+ but nearly

forced me to skip sleep just to continue the story. The first-person narrative oscillates between the main character Kvothe as an older man posing as an innkeeper describing his untold adventures of battle, love and wizardry and the events taking place in real time. This coming-of-age story is not to be missed by those fans of J.K. Rowling, J.R. Tolkien or C. Paolini and will — doubt me if you must — become a classic someday. Once you’re finished, pick up the second novel in the trilogy, The Wise Man’s Fear.

They also serve huge, fresh salads and calzones. Check it out at Newport on the Levee or Oakley Square.

9. Currito: Burritos Without Borders

Currito is the burrito of choice when you aren’t in the mood for Mexican. Although they offer a build your own burrito bar, they are most known for their unusual pre-set burrito combinations, like “Teriyaki,” “Mediterranean” and “Bangkok.” You can choose steak, chicken or tofu as your choice of “meat.” They also feature unusual toppings like mango salsa, broccoli and hummus. Norwood’s Skyline Chili is located just a few minutes from campus on Montgomery Road.

2. Aglamesis

Opened in the early 1900s, this Cincinnati ice cream parlor produces hand-churned ice cream and delicious homemade candies that everyone will love. The original parlor, located in Oakley Square on Madison Road, is considered to be one of the only remaining ice cream parlors from this time period. Try flavors like Pineapple Pecan, Banana Chocolate Chip, Fresh Peach or Mocha Chip.

from Norwood Plaza, Pleasant Ridge Chili is a Xavier favorite. Although they do serve chili, they are most known for their unique Gravy Cheese Fries and their late-night hours. They are open until 4:30 a.m.

15.

Just across the border in Newport, KY, Newport on the Levee is a popular Xavier hangout. With places like AMC Movie Theatre, Coldstone Creamery and the Newport Aquarium, it’s no wonder the Levee is always packed. Shop the day away and then grab a bit to eat or just sit by the river and watch people walk across the giant Purple People Bridge. Either way, Newport on the Levee is relaxing and a great place to go on the weekend.

A dorm away from home Continued from page 1 new dorm is being sold for naming rights. Currently, these names have not been solidified. Hoff Student Dining Hall, in hopes to accommodate the increasingly large freshman class sizes, seats 700 students, an increase from 400 in the Hoff Marketplace. Seats range from traditional square tables to booth seating, as well as high top tables for quick meals and lounge spaces for quiet studying. This increased capacity has allowed Xavier Dining to provide enough food and space for most on-campus students to dine at the same time, making the Meal Xchange program nearly obsolete. “The Meal Xchange program was created to eliminate over-crowding in the Hoff Marketplace during peak meal periods,” Tom Barlow, director of Auxiliary Services, said in a press release. “As the new Hoff Student Dining Hall has capacity to seat nearly twice as many guests, we do not expect over-crowding to be a problem.”

Hoff Student Dining Hall Hoff Student Dining Hall offers a wide variety of seating arrangements, including booth style, high top seating and couches. Each room reflects one of the five Ignatian gifts: Service, Mission, Solidarity, Reflection and Discernment.

One of the more eye-popping attractions in the new dining hall is the futuristic Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. With its capability to create 125 different soda flavors, it should provide a new twist to the “same old, same old” meal plan.

Pizza connoisseurs and dieters alike will flock to the brick-oven pizza station, a gas-powered machine that is said to make a student’s mouth water from a mile away. Get out your pocket books, seniors; you’re going to want a meal plan this year.

The freshman 15 will take a new name when students discover the new bakery, equipped with a master Pastry Chef who plans to bake anything from breads to morning donuts. I’ll take a jelly-filled bearclaw, please.

Sports Kyle’s Watch: XU names to know Xavier Newswire

Kyle Isaacs breaks down Xavier’s top athletes

1. Michael Zennedjian (Senior; Men’s Swimming) – Entering his senior season at Xavier, Zennedjian is already an extremely accomplished swimmer. In addition to being the top point scorer from last year’s conference meet, Zennedjian was named the 2010-2011 Atlantic 10 Men’s Swimming Most Outstanding Performer. Zennedjian currently holds three individual and four team relay school records. 2. Tu Holloway (Senior; Men’s Basketball) – After pulling his name out of the 2011 NBA Draft, Holloway was immediately considered a dark horse candidate for Naismith Player of the Year. It was easy to see why after Holloway’s junior season, where he recorded two triple-doubles, led Xavier in four statistical categories and was named to the Associated Press’ Third Team All-American. 3. Michelle Matia (Senior; Volleyball) – Matia, who is Xavier’s middle blocker, had an excellent tournament and was named to the A-10 All-Tournament Team. Matia also performed well during the regular season, with a team-high 98 blocks on her way to being named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team.

4. Luke Spencer (Junior; Men’s Soccer) – In order for the men’s soccer team to defend its A-10 Conference Championship, head coach Andy Fleming will need big things from junior Luke Spencer. Despite missing eight games due to injury, Spencer still led the team with 14 points (five goals and four assists). B:6”

Match ups you shouldn’t miss By sabrina Brown Sports Editor

For Xavier Nation, every sporting event is an excuse to show up, paint up and show your Muskie pride, but these five are a must-see for every Musketeer. 1. The Crosstown Shootout: For years, the most anticipated event on Xavier and the University of Cincinnati’s campuses has been the Crosstown Shootout. This year, the Bearcats are traveling to Muskie territory. This fierce basketball rivalry began in 1927 and is anticipated every year by students and college basketball fanatics alike. 2. Dayton @ Xavier: There are only two words to describe this bitter rivalry: Jimmy Carter. Since 1981, the Dayton Flyers have left Xavier’s arena defeated. That’s 30 years, six presidents and a turn of the century that have all seen Dayton leave empty handed. This brings a hostile Dayton crowd, and a proud Xavier crowd together in Cintas Center to witness a timeless college rivalry. 3. Stanford @ Xavier: In the 2010 tournament, a heartbreaking game ended

the No. 3 Xavier women’s basketball team’s dreams of reaching the Final Four for the first time in Xavier history. After Xavier senior Dee Dee Jernigan missed two open layups, Stanford went on to score and win the game. This will be the second meeting of the two teams since the 2010 tournament, and the first game on Xavier’s home court. 4. Dayton @ Xavier: For the past two years, the Dayton Flyers have won the Atlantic 10 championship title in women’s volleyball. This year, Xavier is picked to finish second. Not only will this be a match between two talented teams, but it is also a stem of the fierce rivalry between the Musketeers and the Flyers. 5. Fordham @ Xavier: In their 2010 season, the Xavier men’s soccer team won their first A-10 Championship title and made their debut in the NCAA tournament after a 2-1 victory over Fordham to become the final team in the A-10 tournament. This year, Xavier will open conference play at home against Fordham, who is predicted to finish fourth in the A-10, directly behind Xavier at No. 3.
