Two local businesses are now closed after being declared ‘nuisances’ by Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters closed two local bsuinesses, Sherman Market and Donnas carry-out after deeming them ‘nuisances’ per police on July 28.

Sherman Market, of 1764 Sherman Ave. has been the the location subject to 217 police calls in the past two years.

During that same stretch, Donna’s Carry-Out had 153 in-

cidents prompting police visits, including DUI stops, drug related DFWLYLW\ ÀJKWV DQG FKLOG HQGDQJHUment through underage sales of alcohol.

Donna’s has long been a popular location for Xavier students to acquire alcohol, both legally and otherwise.

The store is located immediately across from Xavier’s University Station apartments and shopping center. Sherman Market is located off of Carter ave, slightly north of Xavier’s campus.

At a press conference announcing the closings of these two businesses, Deters placed his

support behind the decision, citing public safety, and saying that, “This is a good day for Norwood.

Two businesses that caused nothing but trouble for the law-abiding citizens in the community have been shut down. Norwood citizens constantly complained about these businesses.�

Deters later added that the inordinate number of incidences posed a risk to the surrounding community and its citizens.

The two businesses combined have been hotbeds for neighborhood crime, likely due to their location.

however did have six rental units attached to the store, and now the inhabitants living above the Norwood store are facing uncertain living arrangements, and may be left without a place to live.

Displaced resident Paul Johnson said, “Nine o’clock, they banged on my door. I’ve been homeless since. My 3-year-old can’t go in and take a... bath in her own bathtub. She can’t lay down in her own bed. She can’t play with her own stuffed animals.�

Several outraged families said that they had already paid rent for the month of August.

There was initial speculation that the Red Cross might be of assistance to any of the affected Sherman Market residents, but a spokeswoman for the agency stated that they would not be involved in any tenant-landlord disputes, per agency policy.

The move to close the two establishments has provided both a boost to community safety and a GLIĂ€FXOW FLUFXPVWDQFH IRU VHYHUDO families and individuals.

June 10, 3:53 p.m. – A nonstudent panhandling on the residential mall was advised and sent on his or her way.

June 17, 3:37 p.m. – A student reported the theft of his or her wallet at the O’Connor Sports Center locker rooms. The wallet was discovered, turned into the front desk and released to the owner the following day.

June 18, 3:43 a.m. – An intoxicated underage non-student was observed by surveillance driving through campus parking lots and crashing into the guardrail at the top of the Cintas Center incline.

He or she was arrested for DUI and criminal damaging.

June 21, 12:56 a.m. – Xavier Police helped Norwood Police apprehend two juveniles wanted for theft from parked cars in Norwood. The juveniles were located in the Smith Lot walking toward Dana Avenue.

Schmidt Memorial FieldHouse were advised and sent on their way. Later the juveniles stole a campus utility vehicle and cell phone from the loading dock at Buenger Hall. After a short

chase both were apprehended in lower Mill Crest Park with the assistance of Norwood Police. They were charged with motor vehicle theft, obstructing official business, trespassing and outstanding warrants.

June 22, 2:08 p.m. – A 9-year old juvenile was arrested for theft after stealing a student worker’s iPhone, which was left near his or her register in the All For One Shop.

July 5, 6:04 p.m. – An employee reported damage to the soccer concession trailer in the O’Connor Sports Center parking lot. It is believed someone tried to break into the trailer but was unsuccessful.

June 22, 4:30 p.m. – A contract employee reported that another employee in Fenwick Place threatened him or her.

June 23, 1:52 p.m. – An employee reported damage to one of the electrical boxes in the Schmidt Memorial FieldHouse across from the classrooms.

June 27, 10:17 a.m. – Two juveniles found sleeping in

July 5, 6:25 p.m. – A summer intern reported damage to the driver’s side of his or her vehicle in the Village Apartments.

July 11, 11:36 a.m. – A nonstudent looking into cars behind the Cintas Center was advised for trespassing and sent on his or her way. A short time later he or she was arrested for trespassing when found back

on campus.

July 31, 9:07 a.m. – Xavier Police conducted a search of the Conaton Learning Commons after finding one of the outside doors propped open with a piece of wood.

After investigation all was deemed OK. Aug. 2, 4:54 p.m. – An employee reported an unknown person used a Xavier credit card to purchase over $600 of merchandise. An investigation is pending.

Aug. 4, 10:22 p.m. – Xavier Police investigated a report of interns drinking on the volleyball courts. Two interns with open containers were advised and sent on their way. Additionally, several unopened beers, which no one would claim, were confiscated and destroyed.

Xavier Student Government Association (SGA) and Xavier Police are collaborating more than ever this year to create safe and productive spaces on campus for dialogue and action. Most undergraduate students left campus in May, before a tumultuous and often violent summer began.

Xavier is different from other universities in its Cura Personalis, (care for the whole person). The university is just as concerned with the moral and spiritual education

A Successful Start for FC Cincinnati

Staff Writer FC Cincinnati has only been in existence since Aug. 12, 2015, but it has been a very good year for the young franchise.

The club plays at Nippert Stadium and has made substantial progress since it was founded.

Currently, FC Cincy is in third place in the United Soccer League with 42 points. They are ÀYH SRLQWV EHKLQG FXUUHQW OHDGers Louisville City FC and New York Red Bulls II, who each have 47.

Even though it’s only been one year, FC Cincy has managed to develop a few rivalries.

One is Louisville City FC, which has been fueled by the closeness of the clubs, both in distance, with Louisville fewer than 100 miles away, and standings, with FC Cincy one spot below Louisville.

These clubs also compete for the River Cities Cup every year.

FC Cincy currently leads the series.

Another rivalry, possibly intenVLĂ€HG E\ WKDW EHWZHHQ WKH %HQJDOV and Steelers, is with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

Another notable rivalry is with the Charlotte Independence, with whom they compete for the Queen City Cup. FC Cincy also features some

This could potentially help the team’s case for a promotion to the MLS when the organization expands.

This could occur as early as 2020, and FC Cincy has been listed as a potential club. This is a giant leap forward, as very few thought they would have a shot so soon.

FC Cincinnati looks to have a successful second season and is currently in third place in the United Soccer League.

In addition to FC Cincy, Jaye has made six appearances for Guam’s national team.

He made 14 appearances while at Xavier but has yet to make an appearance at FC Cincy. Spencer has yet to score for FC Cincy.

However, while at Xavier, Spencer scored 22 goals in 70 appearances throughout his fouryear career.

He did well enough to be

drafted 23rd overall in the MLS Superdraft but tore his ACL before he signed, and his deal was never completed.

Attendance has been incredible this season. The club has broken the record for highest single game attendance twice this season.

7KH ÀUVW WLPH RFFXUUHG RQ April 16 with a total attendance 20,497. They broke the record again on May 14 with 23,375 attendees.

FC Cincy also owns the record for the highest single season attendance record in the USL on

Staff Writer As the fall semester kicks off, NFL football looms right around the corner, a season Bengals fans in Cincinnati anticipate each year.

There are obvioulsy important inter-division games against the likes of the Ravens, Browns and Steelers, but let’s look at the other games on the Bengals’ schedule this year that could prove to be just as, if not more, important.

Week One: Bengals vs. Jets Week 1 is obviously an important step. Teams are now through the preseason and are gauging how the team is faring and who is best suited to play where.

This is a particularly interesting matchup for both teams because it would not be overly surprising to see these two face off again in the postseason.

Just one game off a playoff berth last season, the Jets return a stable offense and one of the OHDJXH¡V WRS ÀYH GHIHQVHV Getting the season off to a good start is key for the Bengals, and they will attempt to do so on the road against the Jets.

So you’ve chosen Xavier University. You’ve been moved into your new dorm, met your roommates and neighbors and want to get off campus to explore some of the local delicacies. Where do you go? You can check out these awesome places – some near, some far – and explore all that this great city has to offer.

Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens Who doesn’t love going to the zoo? For about $20, you can see all the animals you can imagine and take a trip back to your childhood! You can check out the new hippopotamus exhibit, as well as the baby giraffe Cora. You can also pay your respects to the late Harambe.

American Sign Museum This may sound boring, but it’s actually an extremely LQWHUHVWLQJ PXVHXP ,W·V ÀOOHG WR WKH EULP ZLWK GLIIHUent types of signs, including light-up neon signs and some awesome history.

Half-Price Sushi Everyone likes a good half-price sushi! There are quite a few places around Xavier to try some tasty rolls, including the Dancing Roll in Hyde Park, Ichiban and Cloud 9 in Mount Lookout. They’re open late, as well: perfect for poor, sleep-deprived college students.

Over the Rhine Filled with restaurants, nightlife and entertainment of

all sorts, Over-the-Rhine is a great place to be on the weekends.

There’s an amazing bakery called Holtman’s Donut Shoppe where you can get unique and delicious donuts. You can also get a Segway tour of Cincinnati and see the all the highlights. Parking can be a little tricky, but there’s a ton to see and discover down there.

Findlay Market 7KLV LV DQ RSHQ DLU PDUNHW ÀOOHG ZLWK ORFDOO\ VRXUFHG food and some of the best eats in the city. It is home to artisan and farm fresh restaurants and cafes and is open Tuesday-Sunday, all year round. It’s a great place to eat with a fun, friendly atmosphere. The best time to go is at 8 a.m. on Saturday mornings, when everything is fresh!

Eden Park Eden Park is a large plot of land that houses both Playhouse in the Park, where you can check out some awesome theatrical performances, as well as the Cincinnati Art Museum, home of some priceless pieces of art. And if you’re not into either of those, it’s also a beautiful place for a walk or a picnic.

Eli’s BBQ ,I \RX ZDQW WR ÀQG D SODFH WKDW serves delicious barbeque, check out Eli’s on the river or at Findlay Market. They have awesome barbeque, as well as amazing sides that will keep you coming back for more. Plus, they’re within the budget of your average college student, so that’s GHÀQLWHO\ D SOXV Freedom Center Who doesn’t love freedom? Visit the Freedom Center for some fun historical facts about Cincinnati’s role in the Civil War. History buffs, I’m talking to you.

Mount Adams Mount Adams is another place that’s awesome to go for nightlife. The neighborhood on the hill offers a great view of the city, and has lots of charm in its winding streets and historical architecture. It’s also a great place to meet lots of other college kids from the area and get out of the “Xavier bubble.”

This is just a taste of the awesome things that Cincinnati has to offer. Check out a few with friends, and sooner or later this place will start to feel like a second home.
