PROJECT 01
BOUNDARY INHABITATION
COMMUNITY CENTER DESIGN FOR CHINATOWN
This project is envisioned as a prototype of the future of Chinatown based on the study of current and historical Chinatown socioeconomic structures. Hosting hous ing, commerce, and community amenity, this welcome center exhibits the potential interaction of residence, business, and public space of future Chinatown in the context of gentrification challenges, cultural identity loss, and increasing complexi ty of immigrant backgrounds.
Though Chicago Chinatown has maintained as a self-governing ethnic neighbor hood, power shifted among immigrant groups of different geographical and profes sional backgrounds. The patrilineal and patrilocal nature of traditional Chinese villages resulted in the dominance of a few clans. Soon there were conflicts between "Americanization" and "conservation", low-wage laborers (Hip Sing) and promi nent merchants (On Leoung). This project shots the possible solution for the balance between old and new worlds; civic and socail; public and private; discipli narians and citizens.
Restricted by relatively small scale and bounded by busy transit rails, Chinatown lacks tool to reveal authentic Chinese culture. Plus, compacted community-oriented street business, Chinese culture was mainly identified by food and architectural symbols instead of more conductive forms such as art, music and performance. It’s worthy to import real Chinese culture to strengthen Chinatown’s capacity to build upon its tourism potential.
The project proposes configurations of adjacent streets as part of the social infra structure of the neighborhood. It also investigates housing typologies and proposes flexible and varied housing types for a diverse group of residents. It builds stages for vivid lives, exclusive Chinese cultural context, compact commercial landscape and covenant socioeconomic network.
PROJECT 02
URBAN TERRACE
PLAZA REDEVELOPMENT IN BARCELONA
Fun Palace Project, 1964, was an interactive and adaptable, educational and cultural complex for London. The project was thought to be erected on disused public land slated for redevelopment and intended to be dismantled after 10 years. Conceptual and design development drawings were created for a typical Fun Palace that could be erected on any suitable site. The Fun Palace was more than a purely building proposal. It was a way of developing a new understanding or the relationship between the user and architecture. This ambition was approached through building designs but also included a whole project of communication and education about the organization for the authorities and the citizenship.
While the Fun Palace Project ambitioned to be suitable for different sites, it was developed through specific case studies and pilot projects, specially through the Pilot Project in Candem Town. Similarly, our Fun Palace project will be articulated and developed in Plaça Catalunya, Barcelona. Plaça Catalunya is the most central square in the city. It is at the core of the imagination of the citizenship, and everyone understands it as the core of the city. It locates itself in one of the edges of the old town and it is a major public transport hub.
In Barcelona, over-tourism is a contemporary phenomenon concerned by many citizens, that the conflict between residents and tourists has escalated over the years. However, is this going to be an effective solution, considering the city’s heavy economic reliance on tourism? Maybe instead of being passive players “in the city”, the tourists should be visitors with rights and duties “of the city”. For this to happen, a new way of observing and interacting with the city is required for both residents and tourists. This project aims to challenge the idea of viewing as merely receiving information and propose a visual machine that facilitates purposeful observation and individual agency in production of views - a Fun Palace of autono mous vision factory.
PROJECT 03
ELEVATED FIELD HOUSE
ART GALLERY DESIGN ABOVE THE 606 BRIDGE
Chicago was one of the first cities in the world to build field houses. A response to the impact of industrial production, the field house and related park system helped to preserve economic viability in the city by giving the middle class a space to recuperate, breath fresh air, and enjoy sport and leisure. The New Model Field House is a small multi-purpose facility that allows the neighborhood to interpret its use. It also operates at the city scale, as part of a network of multiple and distribut ed spaces.
The challenge is to develop an Urban Design proposal to transform an infras tractural network - the Bloomingdale (the 606 Trail). Similar to the High Line in New York, the Bloomingdale railway in Chicago was converted into an elevated greenway in 2015, which forms the backbone of the linear park and trail network. This park passes through the Chicago neighborhoods of Logan Square, Humboldt Park, and West Town. The trail's final design consisted of a 10 ft (3.0 m) paved path with a 2 ft (0.61 m) soft shoulder on either side for local pedestrians to use the path for walking, biking and running, etc. However, the trail is much less successful compared to the High Line project. The task is to revitalize the trail and prompt the popularity of related neighborhoods.
The site of the new structure is selected on the bridge which over the intersection of the Humboldt Boulevard and the Bloomingdale Trail. The new developed art gallery will be elevated above the trail by steel columns. The space beneath the bridge arches are also reused. The design emphasizes the idea of “hybrid trail” that overlayers different levels to the original linear park. This project extremly enriches mass transformation and increases a lot of fun of touring. In addition, this new model feild house will be presented as the gateway of southside Humboldt Park. At this moment, the trail has cultural attractions as part of a long-term plan for revitalizing popularity of related neighborhoods.
