In the beginning....
Each papercut begins with an idea. This “Birkat Habayit,” blessing for the home, is an updated version of the traditional blessing, set in an original hamsa design. Traditionally, hamsas are good-luck amulets thought to ward off the “evil eye.” This design was sketched in reverse on the back of the paper.
Then the cutting begins. Any area that will be a different color from the main part of the design is cut away.
The main design is done. The empty areas will be filled with color by mounting other colors of paper behind the main layer, one at a time, and cutting away areas to make room for the next color.
It’s all in the details. Cutting designs by hand give them character and create subtle variations.
The background is cut away... ...so the finished piece may be mounted to any color of paper or other surface.
The finshed papercut. This hamsa has four layers of paper but papercuts can have many more for complex designs.
Other designs are available at www.hebrica.com and we will also be happy to create a custom piece for you by special order.
