from head of school dan marchetti This past November I received a package in the mail from Hebron Academy containing various copies of budgets, brochures, and other standard documents intended to accelerate my learning before starting in earnest as Head of School in July. At the bottom of the sizeable stack of papers was a copy of Harold Hall’s History of Hebron Academy, with a sticky note on the cover indicating that I should “try to get through it.” As evidenced by the now heavily dog-eared copy, that book has been on my night table since that day, and continues to be at hand there now, in Allen House. I place considerable value in understanding and appreciating our school’s history. There have been countless struggles and triumphs experienced over the years at Hebron, and the lessons that emerge from our history remain as true and pertinent as ever. Catastrophic fires, world wars, ice storms, and countless other challenges dot our history, and in each instance of potential strife Hebron persevered. There are few schools, in fact, that can claim a two-hundred year tenure. Each struggle has introduced a new opportunity to improve, to grow, to be better. This steadfast perseverance, coupled with a committed body of dedicated faculty, staff, and alumni working in collaboration with a shared growth mindset is what has differentiated Hebron from other educational institutions and has allowed us to continue to thrive.
Since receiving that copy of The History of Hebron Academy, I have also had the opportunity to meet with dozens of alumni to hear their personal stories about the tremendous impact Hebron has had in their lives. A resounding message that has emerged is the life-long impact that our faculty have had on our students; in educating and supporting them, in engaging meaningfully in their lives, and in lighting a spark in them to be their best selves. The other common message among alumni reports are stories highlighting their appreciation of the community they experienced during their years at Hebron. I share the belief of many that providing children with the opportunity to be active, productive, and valued members of a community is one of the most valuable gifts we can give; and one that is absolutely necessary in order for children to truly thrive. The collective reflections of the many alumni I had the pleasure to speak with underscored this sentiment. It has been made extremely clear to me that the strength of community at Hebron has formed indelible impressions and memories among so many. I find this truly inspiring and am committed to continue to strengthen this legacy of community. Since our founding in 1804 we have remained a mission driven school with a true focus on challenging and inspiring students to reach their highest potential in mind, body and spirit. As a school we have always benefitted from a committed body of volunteers and benefactors who have demonstrated their commitment to the vitality of the school by the giving of significant resources. That, of course, continues today and is as important a piece of our future as ever. The Hebron of 1804, of 1904, and of 2016, all have in common our bold and relevant mission, at the heart of which is our commitment to excellence in education.

I am proud to take the charge of leading this The esteemed school into its next chapter and Hebron am buoyed with great optimism for our of 1804, of 1904, future. The Hebron of today is, as recent and of 2016, all have in common our bold alumnus Colin McKay stated (at the and relevant mission, at closing of Commencement), comprised of the heart of which is a “school united in diversity and promise.” our commitment to We benefit at Hebron from a robust excellence in enrollment of students, representing education. twenty-five countries and rich in cultural diversity. This cultural diversity broadens our perspective as individuals and as a community, and it heightens our understanding of one another and of ourselves. Our embrace of diversity extends beyond the nationalities represented, and incudes a rich blend of student experiences and offerings; in academic, athletic, social, and extracurricular realms. The diversity of such offerings, coupled with the support and enthusiasm of a talented and dedicated faculty, allows our students the opportunity to broaden their interests and further develop their passions, leaving them primed to embark on the next phase of their educational journey as engaged and enthusiastic learners. Much of the joy of working in a boarding school comes because it enables one to be fully surrounded by the unbridled optimism and promise of what our young people will accomplish in their lives. Hebron rings with promise; the promise of great things to come; for our students, faculty, campus, and extended community. We have evolved through our history, rising to exceed the promise of what is possible, and we are primed to continue that growth into the future. Over the course of my first year I will spend time listening to students, faculty, alumni and community members to better understand their values, hopes, and aspirations for Hebron. This leadership transition allows us the opportunity to collectively affirm our shared values and begin to plan together our next chapter of growth and continued excellence. I look forward to partnering with you all in the journey. Sincerely,
Dan J. Marchetti Head of School

a thank you to two departing trustees from Paul S. Goodof ‘67 chair of the board of trustees and the entire hebron community
Kimball L. Kenway ‘70 As the winner of the Hebron Cup in 1970, Kim Kenway left Hebron having demonstrated “the finest spirit of scholastic effort, a high degree of excellence, a spirit of devotion, high ideals, friendliness, endeavor and responsibility.” Following college and law school Kim returned to Maine and continued his relationship with Hebron as a member of the Board of Trustees. Kim served from 1992-2003 and again from 2008-2016, many of those years as Secretary for the Board. He also served as the Chair of the Academics and Campus Life Committee. In 2005, Kim was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award. As the Co-Chair for the Bicentennial Celebration in 2004-2005 Kim worked to bring Hebron’s past, present and future together for students and alumni. “Kim has been a dedicated and humble servant of Hebron all his life, and it was no surprise to me back in 2007 that he’d be asked to serve a second eight-year stint as a trustee,” notes Board chair Paul Goodof. “He has brought discipline, insight and energy to every aspect of Hebron’s governance, and always with good common sense. We’re so grateful to him.”
David J. Williams ‘60 “How fortunate we’ve been to have Dave as a trustee,” said Paul Goodof ‘67, chair of the Board. “At every turn and in every role -Class Agent, tireless fund-raiser, investment committee guru, protector of Hebron’s art treasures, and most recently as a member of the Head of School Search Committee -- he has answered the call with wisdom, judgment and always a commitment to what’s best for the Academy. We’re so glad he will be remaining as chair of the Investment Committee!” In recognizing his contributions to the Hebron community, Dave received the Volunteer of the Year award in 2010 and was the Distinguished Service Award recipient in 2015. He was a key participant in the campaign to increase Hebron’s endowment Dave’s service as an ambassador for Hebron is to be commended.

professional development learning to think outside the academic box Earlier this Summer, Hebron’s Director of Teaching and Learning Emily Bonis, and Science Faculty member, Dr. Daniella Swenton, attended a workshop on Design Thinking as part of their professional development. The conference was focused on broadening attendees’ perspectives on what Design Thinking is and how it can be best applied in a professional setting. Dr. Swenton has long been a proponent of many of the tenets of the process and has tried applying it in her classroom. Ms. Bonis wanted to learn more about its potential application across campus, both academically and in residential life.
Attending the workshop provided not only coaching on the technique but also gave attendees the opportunity to develop new approaches to applying the method in a student environment. Ms. Bonis found her initial expectations of its application broadened after the workshop, saying, “Now that I’ve participated in the workshop, I see numerous areas where we could use design thinking to improve current programs or create new ones. It seems that it would be a valuable tool to make students the driving force for change. What is it that they want to change and how might we go about making changes?”
A key tenet of the process is employing empathy in problem solving. “Design thinking is used to identify and solve problems, and to innovate new solutions with empathy for the people you are designing for,” Dr. Swenton explains. “I have been trying to incorporate elements of design thinking into my classes for a while now but have struggled with the process as it is applied to kids (e.g. empathy, iteration).”
As we move ahead into a new chapter at Hebron, it would seem that this particular technique can become a valuable tool for everyone. It underscores the Hebron experience of working as a community for the betterment of everyone. As Ms. Bonis summarized, the most important take away from the workshop was, “First and foremost, empathy is key; people always come first. You can spend vast resources designing something, but if it doesn’t meet the needs of the user, it is useless.”
Design thinking is a multidisciplinary mindset. It is a systematic approach to innovation based on the needs of the people who use the product or service you’re making. It tests desirability, feasibility, and viability. It’s a tool for productive collaboration across teams. Design can ground itself within science and art, it just needs to adapt its approach depending on the context and situation - Field Guide website FAQ

members of the class of 2016 offered unique opportunity to observer thorasic surgery
Dr. Carmine Frumiento P’19’20’22 speaks to seniors last April.
Every Spring, the Advancement Office hosts the Robert J. Ryan ’77 Career Connection Seminars for graduating seniors. It is an opportunity for alumni and friends to meet students on campus and to speak with them about their professional career paths after graduating from Hebron. Both students and speakers spend the afternoon connecting and learning.
to observe intricate thoracic surgeries on both visits, standing just behind Dr. Frumiento. Never before has anyone offered this kind of direct exposure to their profession – and the students loved it. When asked to provide details of the experience, replies came back as “Amazing.” “I was fascinated!”, along with the likes of “I almost passed out, but it was incredible!”
This program has been a successful endeavor for a number of years, but this past April, a special connection took it to a whole new level. Dr. Carmine Frumiento P’19, ’20, ’22 was invited to participate. As he told students about his journey to becoming a thoracic surgeon, he offered students a chance to observe him performing surgery at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Four intrepid students took him up on the offer – Nick LaBate, Sophie Gibson, Nick Legere and Olivia Berger, all members of the Class of 2016.
Nick LaBate said the experience actually changed his mind about what area of study he wants to pursue in college. “I was always going into medicine, but I had thought I wanted to specialize in psychology. After spending the afternoon with Dr. Frumiento, however, I have decided that thoracic surgery is what I want to study.” Hebron connections can be profound and life changing. We thank Dr. Frumiento for providing the experience and will be sure to follow Nick’s progress throughout college and medical school.
Operating room rules only allowed two observers at a time, so the students split up their visits. They were able WWW.HEBRONACADEMY.ORG

On the face, the lead climber moves with head and eyes up, surveying the route, assessing the risk, identifying the surface, texture and condition of the rock on this day, at this time. The climber flows quietly over the rock, for in a deliberate swiftness comes a certain ease and safety, born not of rashness but of the calculated, scientific approach to the rock as a problem to be solved. Rock climbing is a partnership of climbers bonded in the decision of the leader’s route. Partners must work together, each with a specific role vital to success, and each must blend personal experience and talents with the resources of others, for success must come for all and not just for one. The ease, experience and grace of the leader must be transmitted and shared by the climbers who gain from their own experience and from that of the team. And when the climb is ‘topped out,’ the team will more likely recall the experience of moving over the rock together, the particular challenges of cracks, chimneys and overhangs - the ‘cruxes’ of the route, for these intermediate experiences become the sum of the climb and not the single act of summiting.
new head of school dan marchetti applies practical experience to schooling by david stonebraker Daniel Marchetti, Hebron Academy’s new Head of School, is a rock climber, accustomed from an early age to ‘lead out’ on a climb, to set the tempo of a pitch and model with a skill born of long experience with the particular moves of the ascent. He also grew up on an independent school campus, a ‘fac-brat,’ the son of educators Ron and Ruthanne Marchetti at the Loomis-Chaffee School (Windsor, CT). These two facts go far to introduce Dan to the Hebron Academy community and to suggest the qualities and values that have shaped his development. “I will date myself,” he says, “for I grew up at Loomis in the era of the ‘Big Wheel’ with a whole posse of faculty kids who would tear around the quad on our bikes, going everywhere and owning everything. What I loved about being a faculty child was the ‘illusion of independence.’ You really felt that you were on some grand adventure, but you also knew that every single person on campus knew your name and would help you if you needed it.” The Loomis campus contained Dan’s earliest mentors, beginning at home but also including several others who would provide catalytic experiences. “My dad started at Loomis after graduating from Bowdoin, and lived on campus teaching Latin and coaching skiing. My mother started to work at the school - in counseling, I believe. At some point Dad became the Director of Studies and my mother the Dean of Students. As I grew, I remember becoming conscious that the narrative at home was that ‘work always came home.’ And if you think about the ‘push-pull’ of those two departments, guidance and discipline, I think I learned something of the functioning of schools just through that exposure at a young age.” Loomis’s legendary Head of School, John Ratté, was another significant influence. “John was a teacher in the way that he talked to me, the way that he carried himself and helped me to see the world; the way that he embodied the stewardship of the educational institution, and the way that as a teacher he challenged you to be your best self for the common good. He also gave me trust at a very early age. I would take care of his dogs while he was on extended trips to Asia, a small thing, but nonetheless empowering in the circumstance. A good leader, a good head, knows that opportunity to give someone a piece of responsibility that will help that individual to meet a challenge, to grow and to feel empowered with a certain trust. ” photo by l asting image photogr aphy

The spark of passion for the outdoors was lit early by his father. A trekking bicyclist, backpacker, canoeist and skier, Ron Marchetti took his son north to hike the White Mountains, and their winter adventures in the Mount Washington Valley captured the aspiring skier. “We would always go up to North Conway at March break and ski all the areas, especially Wildcat, where, at the top Tuckerman’s (Ravine) is right in your face across Pinkham Notch, and I began to bug my father, ‘When are we going to ski it; when are we going to ski it?’ I don’t know what litmus test I passed, but I do remember that I managed to miss school for a day when I was eleven, and we went there. What I remember most is climbing the boot steps up into the Headwall, getting up a ways and then deciding that I wanted to go down. Ever the empathetic one, my father said, ‘Well . . . if you can, go ahead.’ And I realized at that moment that there was no way I could get my skis on right there; it was simply too steep, and that I had to continue up. I had to have some trust that I could do that, and I did. We got to a place higher on the boot track where a platform had been kicked out, a shelf just wide enough to get a ski on. Skis on, I was ready and then faced the challenge of the first turn on the super steeps of the Headwall. There was nothing like it in my skiing before, finding the will to commit to the hill and the rush of the drop until the skis came round again under my feet. I’ll never forget that first run and all that led to it. I was hooked, absolutely hooked, not only with the act, but with the ceremony behind it - what you had to go through and how you had to share. I think the whole point of my dad not taking me until I was ready was that I had to be able to commit ‘all in’ to the experience and to finish it.” Good lessons for skiing, but also for life.
Dan in his element climbing the Precipice at Acadia National Park
Dan admits to not being a traditional student in school and college. “I was never one to do what the crowd did. I did what I wanted to, what I was interested in, and what I was passionate about. At Loomis, Dan came into the sphere of Adrian Bronk, a senior faculty member, who kept the Outing Club, and Aaron ‘Woody’ Hess, Dean of Students and English Teacher, in whose seminar Dan found himself excited by reading and by the teacher who pushed his students to know exactly what they were saying and how to say it most effectively. “He definitely lit a spark in me and was the influence that led to an English major at St. Lawrence University.” And at Loomis, Dan’s passion for rock climbing first took hold. “I don’t know how exactly it happened, but I got obsessed with the idea of being a rock climber. I read all the guide books and begged anyone I could to take me out. Climbing was something that I identified with early.” The Metacomet Ridge through central Connecticut provided early challenge, and a summer spent at Camp Pemigiwasset’s western climbing camp in Crested Butte, Colorado extended his experience and range. However, at St. Lawrence University, Dan shaped the personal discipline so necessary for academics and mountaineering. “I spent four years with the St. Lawrence Outing Club - teaching, running the climbing gym, guiding in the Adirondacks, and by senior year was a Club officer along with my best friend. In those summers, I went to Bend, Oregon, with skiers 8 • HEBRON • FALL 2016
and outing club people who were dedicated to their training, some for Nordic skiing and me for climbing and biking.” Gradually the desire to go further with mountaineering took hold, and the place to pursue that goal was the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), in Lander, Wyoming. Following graduation from St. Lawrence, Dan became a NOLS instructor, embracing the school’s core value that ‘leadership is a skill that can be learned and practiced.’ “The NOLS staff encourages the evolution of judgment, personal responsibility, and awareness of group needs - key leadership traits - through practical experience and timely feedback. We value integrity, experience, accountability, and humility in our leaders (NOLS brochure).” Dan led climbing and mountaineering expeditions into the Olympic Peninsula in Washington and the Wind River Range in Wyoming. “I loved it,” Dan remembers, “and I credit a huge amount of my early success in school leadership to the confidence I gained in how to work with people, how to assess risk. The transferable skills learned by working with groups of people at NOLS and the influence of the NOLS leadership style have been invaluable to me.” Transferrable skills, understanding leadership and partnership, surveying the possibilities of a climb and the resources of a team, accepting challenge ‘all in’ and realizing the empowerment of shared goals as well as the aesthetic beauty of process, the empowerment of accomplishing something ‘hard’ through the collective will of a group - these concepts become the language that Dan Marchetti uses to speak of climbing. It is equally the language of the life of schools. As he recounts anecdotes of his upbringing at Loomis, his education at St. Lawrence and National Outdoor Leadership School, Dan describes a model of learning not defined by the teacher as pedagogue but as guide and mentor, sharing with students the experiences of growth and change, figures contained in Hebron’s mission “to inspire and guide each student to reach his or her highest potential in mind, body and spirit.” His model blends the exploration of traditional subjects through collaborative approaches with the development of leadership and self-awareness through the community and the out-of-doors. Hebron is uniquely positioned in the current independent school arena, Dan feels, to realize these goals. In conversation, he freely quotes Grant Lichtman, whose writing on education develops the figure of the ‘teacher as farmer.’ “This is hard for our current generation of teacher; we often place value in our role as the source of knowledge. We have to let go of that image; knowledge exists irrespective of the teacher. What does a good farmer do? He creates the conditions of optimal growth. She sets out a fence line, the boundary within which nurtured growth can best take place. She breaks some of the most intractable hard pan to allow seeds the space to take root. He digs a few really big rocks out of the field. And then the job of the farmer is twofold: to provide nutrients to the growing plants, and to do some judicious pruning and weeding. The plants do the rest.” (Grant Lichtman blog) Dan picks up these themes in conversation as he develops the close connection of the roles of technology and teacher. “At the end of the day, the paradigm of education has shifted. We have been in the industrial model too long, filling kids with information, and asking them to return it to us. It is now practical for any student with the right access to technology to be able to pull up accurate and comprehensive information that they don’t have to have known ahead in order to apply it. Some people think that this power makes the classroom and the teacher irrelevant. They’re wrong. Schools are social institutions; it’s our job to educate enlightened democratic citizens to make healthy, positive decisions that impact themselves as leaders of their families and empowered members of greater communities, to be moral, ethical human beings. Anyone can get access to knowledge, WWW.HEBRONACADEMY.ORG
but a good teacher is teaching kids how to ask questions, how to question existing paradigms, and how to assess what ‘truth’ is to them. It is only through questions and with mentors to help students value the act of asking questions that innovation can thrive.” And in the process, students develop their individual strengths and passions, discover their ‘highest potential,’ and define their values and their selves. One final anecdote may suggest the culmination of such life experiences in climbing and education. Dan Marchetti is a rock climber who has the skill and experience to challenge the iconic ‘big walls’ of the Yosemite Valley, which is a mecca for skilled climbers, and on two occasions has spent extended time in the valley climbing with special friends. One such climb, on the 2000 vertical foot ‘Leaning Tower,’ provided a seminal moment of learning and reflection. The climb had taken two days to complete, and on their rapid rapelling descent, Dan and his partner lost the route and were overtaken by nightfall some 500 feet above the valley floor. Not certain of what lay below, the friends argued whether to continue in the dark or spend a second night on the cliff. Dan remembers the strength of his friend to urge the uncomfortable choice of bivouacking again on the rock against the uncertain descent at night. Morning proved the value of the decision for the way immediately below was impossible, and in daylight a brief traverse to a new line allowed the partners a safe final descent. Reflecting now upon the adventure, Dan noted how glad he was to have had “a friend strong enough to say ‘no,’ and for myself, to be smart enough to listen.” That defining moment brings into focus several ideas applying equally to the challenges of big rock faces and of educating young people. The question is, ‘Why and how is the task so vital to growth?’ Dan sums the lure of the rock this way. “There is a tremendously personal and introspective aspect to it all, for why else would you set yourself to the challenge of serious climbing. First, I think because it is fun; it makes you feel good. Climbing is a source of pride or esteem or comradery, or any number of values. What I liked most about doing those ‘big-wall’ climbs is that they are an ‘all-day all-out’ effort, and you can’t do it alone. You have to have that partnership, that bond of the rope and trust. What I’ve loved about my best friends and climbing partners is that we’ve always pushed each other, and that there has always been a bit of competition; but at the end of the day you’re happy for their successes, and they support you in your success. The success of the team is more than individual success. It becomes a spiritual thing. It’s hard to be in a place like Yosemite and not have a feeling of spirituality. I think it’s impossible not to be moved by a place that is so majestic and not to feel pretty darn small when you’re in the middle of that face looking out. You know that you’re connecting to something bigger than yourself and on a pretty big stage. That is what matters most about it.” When Dan was being interviewed for this article in the familiar setting of the Reading Room of Sturtevant Hall and began to speak of climbing in Yosemite - the routes on Leaning Tower, Royal Arches and El Capitan - his dark eyes lit in animation, exploring, and his large hands, no longer folded at rest, instinctively began to flex and move - the climber in his element surveying the route ahead, planning the way forward. Such it is now as Dan anticipates the way ahead for Hebron. Together as a community of learners, the experience that now begins will promote growth and change in all, will provide adventure and the opportunity to ask questions, to analyze and evaluate, will require commitment, trust and a bond for the way ahead, and in the end, all in the Hebron community may understand the empowerment which comes from such an ‘all in’ approach to schooling, community and life; and together may come to realize their ‘best selves.’
Lead out, Dan, let’s climb together.

new life at allen house “The house is so beautifully designed and oriented; I appreciate the light and airy feeling of it. The touch and thought of John Calvin Stevens is visible everywhere: in the large windows and circulation, and in the way it connects to the campus.” As she speaks of the house, Courtney continues to anticipate the life of the school and her place in it. “I love it that we have neighbors all around and that the Community Garden is right here. One is always meeting people and feeling connected with the life of the school.”
While Dan Marchetti, new Head of School, is featured elsewhere in the magazine, it seems appropriate to introduce Courtney Marchetti to the school community. The couple share a partnership born of common experiences. Courtney begins, “I grew up in upstate New York and central Massachusetts. When I was little, my family spent a lot of time skiing. I was probably two and a half when my Dad got me my first skis. Some of my earliest memories are of him teaching my younger sister and me how to ski.” Skiing became a formative part of Courtney’s experience, and she skied competitively as a junior racer at Mount Wachusett in Massachusetts, then at the Killington Mountain School in Vermont and at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York. Competitive skiing provided structure, discipline and a drive for school, but it also proved narrowing as well. “Ski racing was my passion for such a long time and greatly influenced who I have become. I was ‘all in’ during those years. Like many high-level athletes, I struggled at times, especially with performance consistency, and I had a tendency to not finish slalom races. However, looking back, I know that my struggles in skiing were tremendous for character building.” At St. Lawrence, Courtney explored interests outside of ski racing. “I began with thoughts of becoming an English major,” she continues, “but like many undergraduates, my interests evolved as I took courses in other academic areas such as psychology, anthropology and religion. During my sophomore year, I took a sports psychology course, which resonated with me on a deeply personal level. Courtney Marchetti sparkles as she speaks of moving into Allen House, the traditional Head of School’s home on the Hebron campus for more than a century. The Marchettis become the 10th residents of ‘The Principal’s House,’ as it was known first when built for William Sargent in 1890, and the first family with young children to live there in decades.
“I just love the feeling of living here, the sense of place and connection to the past. It is important to feel a ‘part of something,’ the history and the school. I love the connection to the campus that we have here. The school is right there outside the front door, and I can watch my children playing and then see the woods beyond out the back door.”

college that I wanted to pursue a career in psychology and mental health. Given my interest in sports psychology and the research that I was conducting in this area for my honors thesis, I contemplated pursuing graduate studies in sports psychology. However, I also began to appreciate the impact that I could make in the lives of those struggling with more significant mental health concerns. These thoughts, ultimately, led me to child psychiatry”. In addition to academics and ski racing while at St. Lawrence, Courtney, like Dan, gravitated toward the Outing Club and discovered telemark skiing, back country skiing and rock climbing, interests that remain to the present. At heart, Courtney describes herself as a ‘people’ person. Interests in psychology as well as a passion for health and wellbeing gradually coalesced into a career path toward health services, and Courtney pursued a graduate degree in nursing at the Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University. “As I prepared to be an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN), I knew I was interested in treating the ‘whole person’ rather than focusing solely on managing symptoms. I also knew that I was interested in psychiatry and that I wanted to work with children, so that became the primary focus of my graduate studies.” Clinical practice, marriage and launching a family followed in quick succession. Since graduating with a Master’s of Science in Nursing from Northeastern, Courtney has practiced as an APRN specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry in a variety of settings including inpatient hospitals, residential treatment facilities, private outpatient group practices, and at several educational institutions, including the Hillside School, where she had the opportunity to work closely with Dan. Most recently, Courtney ran a private child psychiatry practice in Brattleboro, VT. Now, Courtney embarks on yet another ‘new beginning’ at Hebron. Looking ahead, it seems there are a number of possibilities and interests that will grow from past experiences. “I am excited to explore the area,” she says, “and to share adventures with Lila, Oliver and Dan.” Early excursions have already included blueberrying on Streaked Mountain and trips to Acadia and the Rangeley region. “I also look forward to resuming my clinical practice, engaging in school activities and becoming a part of this close community. It will be wonderful to watch Lila (5) and Oliver (2) make Hebron truly their ‘home.’ Dan and I have lived elsewhere, but Lila and Oliver are so young that they have few memories of other places we have lived. This will become our first family home for all.”

from the board of trustees
update from the development committee Dear Alumni & Friends of Hebron, I hope most of you have heard or read in June of the extraordinary $10 million commitment to Hebron by the Albert Lepage Foundation. This wonderful gift will enable the completion of The Lepage Center for the Arts, including the creation of music performance, practice and classroom spaces, upgrades to the Androscoggin Theater, and gallery spaces for permanent and traveling art exhibitions. The gift will also endow a Center for Diversity to coordinate and implement programs reflective of the value Hebron places on diversity of thought, people and ideas; to provide support for recruitment of minority faculty and administrators; and to provide financial aid to make Hebron affordable to a broad range of families and sustain a racially, socio-economically and culturally diverse student population. We’re profoundly grateful to Deacon William Barrows Trustee Emeritus Albert Lepage ’65 for his inspiring vision and generosity and his steadfast support of Hebron. Over the last two years, the Board and our able Advancement staff have been quietly engaged in an effort to raise capital funds for the Academy. To provide permanent underpinning, we established a goal of raising $15 million for new endowment. As we go to press for this issue of HEBRON, $13 million has been committed by three family foundations, several alumni, and the Board. A significant portion of these commitments is conditional, requiring us to raise $500,000 by the end of this year, a further $500,000 by the end of next year, and a final $1 million by the end of 2018. This $15 million of additional endowment is essential to Hebron’s future, and meeting the requirements of these conditional pledges is imperative. It’s within our grasp if we can raise that final $2 million. We’ll be calling on all alumni and friends to make it happen. Simultaneously, we have evaluated the facilities needs of our wonderful but aging campus and after a good bit of study, we established a goal of $14 million for critical upgrades and renovations to our science, arts, and student and faculty housing structures. With the Lepage gift and a number of significant commitments by alumni and friends, we’re roughly half way toward that goal. Much work remains to be done. Raising $9 million more won’t be easy, but it’s absolutely vital to our future and all that we’re doing to sustain the best teaching and learning environment for our students and faculty. We are much heartened by the commitments to date, and hope you will all “answer the call” and help us assure Hebron’s position at the forefront of independent education. With deepest gratitude,

Hebron Academy helped me get started in my career on a solid footing, which has been very beneficial. Over the years, I have given to Hebron through the Annual Fund to support the school’s excellent programs and guidance it gives to its students. I have included Hebron in my estate planning in appreciation of the role it has played in my life
Including Hebron Academy in your charitable estate planning is one of the most personal ways to express your philanthropy. We honor those who remember the Academy in this way by recognizing them as members of The Franklin Society. The society celebrates Dr. Benjamin Franklin’s estimable qualities of foresight, prudent financial management and intellectual achievement. Dr. Franklin serves as a symbol of building up the past for the benefit of the future. As I look around the room today, I see no singular mold. I see different cultures and races. I see artists and mathematicians. I see athletes and writers. And I see different styles and personalities. However, I do see one singular tangible. I see a school united in diversity and promise. - Colin McKay ‘16

meet amy connell director of alumni & parent relations
The Advancement Team has added a new member. Amy Connell joins us as the newly appointed Director of Alumni and Parent Relations. She will be working to further engage our alumni through enhanced communications and to provide a direct point of contact for everything from Homecoming/Reunion to regional events and other alumni specific programming. She will also work closely with Hebron parents, as both the school liaison for HAPA (Hebron Academy Parent Association) and point person for all events and programs involving parents.
"This is such an exciting time for Hebron and I look forward to being a part of it!"
Amy hails from Pittsford, NY but came “East” to go to college at Saint Michael’s College, and then Tufts University. She worked in the arts for many years with stints at The Memorial Art Gallery of The University of Rochester, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and New Art Center in Newton, MA. She then decided to pursue her passion for wine by taking an intensive study in France. She then applied that passion and knowledge to sales of wine in New York and eventually here in Maine. Amy then chose to transition into the world of academia as an Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement for Bates College. There she worked with all of Bates’ regional networks and eventually became the Associate Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement. “I have always been curious about Hebron Academy as my travels to Sunday River took me through campus many times,” Amy said when asked what led her to Hebron. “I am very excited about the opportunity to be at an independent school, immerse myself in the community and work to grow the Academy’s opportunities to connect with alumni and parents.” Please be sure to introduce yourself to Amy when you next visit campus - her office is in Red Lion, top of the stairs to the right. Or you can always drop her a note or call. She can be reached at aconnell@hebronacademy.org or 207-966-5243.
hebron mini-reunion On May 27, 2016 at the United States Naval Academy Commencement exercises in Annapolis, MD, a number of Hebron friends gathered for a picture. All were there to celebrate Ally Strachan’s ‘12 graduation from the Academy. As you may know from past issues of HEBRON, we are very proud of Ally and all she has accomplished since her days at Hebron. We wish her the very best. Pictured from left to right: Shane Hearn ‘12 - 2016 graduate of the United States Military Academy West Point, now stationed in Korea; Mariah Mosher ‘12 - attends Salve Regina University where she will receive her masters in Applied Behavior Analysis in 2017; Paul S. A year into their retirement, Moose and Trish Curtis realized a ‘bucket list’ adventure trip to the Pacific Northwest, their parting gift from the Academy. They flew to Vancouver, BC, and enjoyed time exploring that waterfront city and nearby islands. Next they boarded the Rocky Mountaineer for a circle trip into the high peaks country of the Canadian Rockies. Their route traced river gorges to the northeast and Jasper, BC, where they turned southward to weave along the spine of the Rockies, visiting the Columbia Icefields and Athabasca Glacier. Ascending to nearly 11,000’ in a monster tracked vehicle, Moose and Trish were able to view at first hand the effects of warming upon the receding icesheet. Their trip then continued to Lake Louise and Banff before returning to the start. Moose and Trish toured the area in fine style from the domed observation cars of the Mountaineer, enjoying every minute of the adventure, and the support of the Academy that made it all possible.
