i n S P i r at i O n As artists, Deborah kirk solbert and Laura Powers-swiggett understand the importance of cultivating creativity in our everyday lives and broadening the reach of the visual arts in their own communities. Their continued support of The Heckscher Museum of Art in these endeavors inspired this year’s theme for the Celebrate Achievement Benefit. The images featured in this Journal were chosen from recent exhibitions and programs featuring emerging and established Long island artists. indeed, the Museum’s Permanent Collection mirrors the commitment to Long island’s rich artistic environment. The Heckscher Museum plays a prominent role in the cultural life of Long islanders, celebrating and nurturing artists at every age. The DRAW oUT! and DRAW in! Community Arts Festivals, summer Drop-in workshops and Family Hour programs introduce children and families to art learning and art making. school programs span the years between kindergarten and preparation for college and career. The prestigious Long island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum gives high school students the invaluable experience of being included in a professional museum exhibition. The Portfolio Development series connects juniors and seniors to top art colleges throughout the country. The Long island Biennial exhibition and the emerging Artist series continue the Museum’s strong advocacy for Long island artists, giving them an exceptional space to show and share their work. The Heckscher Museum of Art tells the story of our community through art.
Visitors enjoy the 2018 Long Island Biennial exhibition.

Honoring Deborah Kirk Solbert DeBoRAH kiRk soLBeRT is an artist and philanthropist who has been steadfast in her support of The Heckscher Museum of Art, contributing to education and art conservation programs. The art world has had a role in much of her life. Deborah’s family on both her mother’s and father’s sides come from public service backgrounds. They served in the armed forces and were diplomats all over the world. As the daughter of a naval officer, Deborah and her family moved often. she developed an ability to adapt, finding groups of interesting people and making new friends. When abroad she took advantage of the local culture and peoples to learn more about the world. During World War ii, Deborah, then about eighteen years old, joined the first class of the WAVes (Women Accepted for Volunteer emergency service). she served for three years in Corpus Christie, Texas, and Washington, D.C., receiving and sending messages in Morse code. in the late 1960’s while living in Paris with her husband Peter, Deborah volunteered to be a liaison for American wives of PoW’s in Vietnam trying to find information about their husbands. she was one of the few who were able to get the north Vietnamese to speak to some of these families. Throughout Deborah’s life, she was exposed to art and antiquities during her travels with her parents and other relatives. she continued going to museums and introducing her children to the same. Mrs. Alan kirk, Deborah’s mother, was an artist in her youth, and Deborah herself is largely self-taught. Deborah lived in many different cities as her husband, Peter, was working in the law and with the government. she took art classes in Washington, D.C., new York City, Paris, and Tokyo. in Japan she studied Japanese brush painting on silk and paper. she has a wonderful natural talent for drawing and painting. Deborah and Peter raised a family of five in Lloyd Harbor and Deborah is still living in the same house. she continues to draw and paint. For the past twenty-five years Deborah has taken art trips with her three daughters—Leslie, Alison, and Lisa—both in europe and in the United states. Her youngest son, Christopher, also absorbed her love of art and makes jewelry and sculpture.
Honoring Laura Powers-Swiggett LAURA PoWeRs-sWiGGeTT has lived and painted on Long island for most of her life. she received a B.A. in Visual Arts from Dartmouth College, worked in cable television marketing early in her career, and now devotes herself fully to painting and community service. The Long island landscape and surrounding waters are Laura’s favorite sources of inspiration. Her abstract paintings are spontaneous explorations of color, light, and space that communicate her sense of wonder and joy in the natural world. she works in a variety of media, including acrylic, oil, and gouache, and draws on direct observation, memory, and intuition as part of her painting process. A long-time member of the Art League of Long island (ALLi), Laura has studied with Paul Wood, Christian White, and the late stan Brodsky. she served on ALLi’s Board of Directors from 1997-2009, and was active in the planning and fund raising for the Art League’s first permanent home. Laura was honored for her service to ALLi in 2011. she now co-mentors an Advanced seminar in Painting there. Laura has exhibited widely on Long island, including two Long island Biennial (2014 and 2018) juried exhibitions at The Heckscher Museum. she values her dialogue with other local artists, and is grateful that The Heckscher Museum connects her more deeply to the work of those who have come before. Laura believes that the Museum is an invaluable source of enrichment for both practicing artists and the broader community. Laura and husband Brian live in Lloyd Harbor and have three grown children, emily, Towny, and Peter. she has served on the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Association of nassau County for more than 25 years and is an active parishioner at st. John’s Church in Cold spring Harbor, where she is outreach Chair. she is currently collaborating with Adam Brodsky on a book that combines Adam’s poetry with the artwork of his father, stan Brodksy. Laura’s family, friends, fellow artists, and The Heckscher Museum are proud to honor Laura at the 2019 Celebrate Achievement Benefit.

tHe HeCKSCHer muSeum OF art The Heckscher Museum of Art brings art and people together. it is a catalyst for discovery, imagination, the exchange of ideas, and the sharing of experiences. nearly 100 years ago, businessman and philanthropist August Heckscher (1848-1941) donated his art collection and built the Museum for the community. He believed that people living outside of urban areas also should have access to the fine arts as a part of their daily lives. The Heckscher Museum plays a prominent role in the cultural and educational life of Long islanders. An average of six changing exhibitions each year highlight the Museum’s impressive Permanent Collection as well as works lent by artists, collectors, and other museums. The Museum lends works of art from its collection to museums around the world for special exhibitions. A leader in visual arts education, the Museum’s k to 12 programs reach 10,000 elementary, middle, and high school students each year. Public programs engage young children, families, and adults with art thinking and art making. As The Heckscher Museum of Art approaches its Centennial in 2020, it is committed to expanding its role as a cultural and educational leader on Long island.
