INSPIRATION FOR THE 2021 CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENT BENEFIT
1920s: Historic Postcard. Collection of the Huntington Historical Society. In 1985, the Museum building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
his year’s Benefit heralds The Heckscher Museum of Art’s centennial year, postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic. This milestone celebrates the people, art, and events that are notable to the Museum’s history. It also marks the beginning of the organization’s second century and its vision for the future.
T
When the Museum opened in 1920, it was one of the first art museums in the country located in what was then a rural area. Founders August and Anna Atkins Heckscher donated their collection of European and American art and built the Museum for the community. They believed that people living outside of urban centers should have access to the fine arts as a part of their daily lives.
1941: Children’s summer art classes.
Introducing art into the lives of young people was a priority for Anna and August Heckscher who wanted children from the surrounding area to have educational advantages similar to those living in cities. Following the Depression years, summer art classes were organized, and teachers brought students to learn about the artworks on view. In the 1970s, more formalized programs were instituted for Huntington schools. In response to requests from other Long Island school districts, programs significantly expanded in the 1990s. The Long Island’s Best high school education program and annual juried exhibition began in 1996. The Heckscher Museum is recognized as a regional leader in K-12 arts education.
The Heckscher art collection was permanently on view in the galleries for more than two decades. Starting in the 1940s, changing exhibitions of historical and contemporary art were organized in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Currently, the collection encompasses 2,300 artworks dating from the sixteenth century to the present, purchased through acquisition funds or gifted by generous individuals. The collection’s holdings include internationally renowned artists. George Grosz, a politically vocal German artist, moved to New York City and then

1968: Students from Huntington High School present Museum Director Eva Gatling with a check to help with the purchase of George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun. 1996: William H. Johnson: A Retrospective from the National Museum of American Art. Arthur Dove, Helen Torr, and guests at their home and studio in Centerport. The Museum acquired ownership of the cottage in 1998. It is a member of the Historic Artists Homes and Studios (HAHS), an organization created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Huntington where he lived and worked from 1947 to 1959. Grosz’s affiliation with the Museum led to the collecting of his artwork, most notably Eclipse of the Sun (1926), considered to be among the most important paintings of the twentieth century. Stored in a Long Island garage for many years, Eclipse of the Sun was purchased in 1968. More than 200 donations were received towards the purchase from schoolchildren, area residents, and then-Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Inspired by this major acquisition, individuals began donating works of art to the permanent collection broadening its scope and interpretive potential. Works by Arthur Dove and Helen Torr, who resided in Huntington and Centerport, form another cornerstone of the Museum’s collection. Early in his career, Dove was recognized as a seminal figure in American modernist painting. Helen Torr’s career was overshadowed by that of her husband, and her life’s work was nearly destroyed following her death. Museum Director Eva Gatling, among the first
women to head an American art museum, organized a 1972 exhibition of Torr’s work that established the artist’s reputation, leading to major national museums adding Torr’s work to their collections. From the 1970s onward, the Museum has exhibited diverse artists who represent a richer context for understanding American historical and contemporary art. The Heckscher Museum of Art Permanent Collection: Examples of soloDon exhibitions include William H.oilJohnson, Resnick, Fields After Rain, c. 1984, on canvas.Toshiko Takaezu, of DavidDellosso, Resnick. and the upcoming Richard Howardena Pindell, Gabriela Gift Gonzalez Mayhew: Reinventing Landscape. A gift in 2001 of 289 artworks by former Museum Curator Ronald G. Pisano and D. Frederick Baker significantly expanded the potential for exhibitions and education programs. Works by American modernists Georgia O’Keeffe, Joseph Stella, Florine Stettheimer, and hundreds of other twentieth-century artists were now available to the public. As The Heckscher Museum of Art begins its second century, it strives to be a leading source of artistic inspiration for Long Island and the region through community engagement and educational initiatives. The Heckscher Museum brings art and people together. It is a catalyst for discovery, imagination, the exchange of ideas, and the sharing of experiences. The artwork featured in the Journal messages was selected from the exhibition The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100: Tracing History, Inspiring the Future.

HONORING
NANCY DOUZINAS & THE RAUCH FOUNDATION
PATRICIA PETERSEN & DANIEL GALE SOTHEBY'S INTERNATIONAL REALTY
Nancy Douzinas, Ph.D., became President of the Rauch Foundation in 1990 after a 20-year career as a psychologist and family therapist. Nancy is a prominent advocate for philanthropy's capacity to raise awareness of regional needs and spark change through cross-sector partnerships and informed public discussion of policy. One of the Foundation’s best-known initiatives is the Long Island Index, which for 15 years provided unbiased, reliable data on key sectors and regional issues. Thanks to research coming out of the Index, the region was able to advance one of the largest infrastructure projects in recent years: the Third Track project on the Long Island Railroad. Since 2003, Rauch Foundation grants have funded educational initiatives at The Heckscher Museum of Art, including Museum Discovery Programs, which immerse thousands of Long Island students every year in arts education experiences. Nancy and her husband Kostas have been members of the museum for more than 20 years, and she was a Co-Chair of the 2016 Celebrate Achievement Benefit. In 2020, to compensate for the significant loss of revenue due to the pandemic, the Rauch Foundation initiated a challenge grant, joining with four other donors to create a $200,000 pool of funds. Matching gifts to meet the challenge greatly stabilized the museum’s financial position. Nancy serves on the boards of Teachers College, Columbia University; the Greentree Foundation; the North Shore Land Alliance; and the Stony Brook University Foundation. She and Kostas have two grown children, Ruth and Eva, and five grandchildren.
Patricia Petersen, Chairman of the Board and President of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, is a recognized expert in the world of residential real estate sales and marketing. Twice named an Outstanding CEO of the Year by Long Island Business News, she is also a member of its “Top 50 Women on Long Island Hall of Fame.” Under her leadership, the Daniel Gale organization has expanded throughout Long Island and Queens, achieving over $4 billion in sales in 2020. Pat and Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty are deeply involved with The Heckscher Museum of Art, having generously sponsored various initiatives since 1995. Noteworthy are the diverse exhibitions Daniel Gale has helped bring to the public: Esteban Vicente: Light, Color, Spirit (2001); The Unexpected Artists: Ceramics of the Twentieth Century (2002); Genetic Expressions: Art after DNA (2003); Red Grooms (2004); Isamu Noguchi (2005); Alfred Maurer: The First American Modern (2006); Ansel Adams & Edwin Land: Art, Science and Invention (2006); Long Island Biennial (2010); and Max Weber on Long Island (2012). Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty has been a steadfast donor to every annual Celebrate Achievement Benefit. Pat serves on the advisory boards of several national and international professional organizations. Locally, she is a long-standing member of the Board of Directors at Huntington Hospital and the Corporate Advisory Board of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In addition to The Heckscher Museum, she actively supports the Caumsett Foundation, Pink Aid, and the North Shore Land Alliance among others. Pat has two daughters who reside on Long Island. Christine Petersen lives in Lloyd Harbor, and Kendra and her husband Mark Wates live in Cold Spring Harbor.
