AUGUST HECKSCHER: VISIONARY

ENJOY A SERIES OF FASCINATING STORIES ABOUT THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM’S HISTORY. August Heckscher (1848-1941) was born in Hamburg, Germany, and immigrated to the United States at age 19. He made his fortune in coal, zinc, copper, and real estate. The New York Times described him as “one of the largest holders of real estate in [Manhattan’s] Fifth Avenue zone.” In 1898, he and his wife Anna purchased a summer retreat in rural Huntington, joining other wealthy Americans with homes on the North Shore of Long Island. The millionaire businessman was a generous philanthropist, especially for social issues and children’s causes. In 1906, he purchased land at the site of a former thimble factory previously owned by Ezra Prime and immediately found ways to use it for the public good. The property housed classrooms for Huntington children, and served as part of the Fresh Air Fund which provided underprivileged city girls a two-week stay in the country. Skaters and swimmers enjoyed the adjacent pond, and Mr. Heckscher wanted ice cut from the pond for distribution to the “poor of the Town of Huntington.” August Heckscher had an even grander plan for the Prime property. He deeded the land to the Town of Huntington in 1917, envisioning a magnificent 18.5-acre park and museum to be the center of the community’s recreational, cultural, and social life. Mr. Heckscher chose Julius Franke of the New York City firm Maynicke and Franke as the Museum’s architect. The Heckscher Fine Arts Building, as it was then called, was dedicated at a festive community celebration on July 10, 1920. According to The Long Islander, the 35-piece Seventy-First Regimental Band played a concert, fireworks lit the pond, and an American flag and “Heckscher Park” streamer dropped from the sky. The children were treated to “ice cream, cake, and orangeade,” while adults toured the Museum. August Heckscher donated 185 works of art from his private collection to the Museum. In his dedication speech, Heckscher stated that Huntington was to be “one of the few places in the United States outside of the large cities [that] possess galleries of such extent and importance.” He intended this gift to be “especially for the children.” When August Heckscher died in 1941, The Long Islander called him “perhaps the finest benefactor that Huntington ever had.” His vision lives on in the cultural and educational work of the Museum.

"PERHAPS THE FINEST BENEFACTOR THAT HUNTINGTON EVER HAD."

LONG ISLAND’S

BEST

AN ART EDUCATOR’S POINT OF VIEW As an art teacher at Hicksville High School, I brought my students to The Heckscher Museum for more than 20 years. It was a very important part of my curriculum. Hicksville has a very diverse student population, and the majority of my students had never been to an art museum before. I saw the tremendous impact that The Heckscher Museum’s educational experiences brought to students—even the ones who did not choose art as their path. My students participated in Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum, an outstanding educational program that culminates with a juried exhibition of student artwork. Seeing their [own] artwork hung in such a prestigious museum is overwhelming for students. Then, to see their parents’ reactions—that is worth everything to me as a teacher! When I looked back over the years on my students accepted to Long Island’s Best, I am excited to see that the majority were the quiet ones in the back of the classroom

who never thought anyone other than me would like their ideas or their work. Some of my Long Island’s Best students have gone on to top art colleges, yet many others have gone on to careers in business, medicine, and psychology. When I see them, even years after graduation, they all say "my mom still has my Heckscher piece hanging in the living room!" They report how important art is in their lives even if they did not pursue it as a career. That is the tremendous difference that The Heckscher Museum makes on the lives of others. The Museum provides an environment that gets students excited about expressing themselves with art. And even if they never make another piece of art in their life, the experience of learning how to analyze, process, and advance their intellectual and creative potential have invaluable applications long after high school graduation. We are very fortunate to have The Heckscher Museum keeping arts and culture alive on Long Island. Beth Atkinson was an art educator for more than 32 years, most recently at Hicksville High School. Her artwork was featured in the Museum’s 2018 Long Island Biennial. She is currently managing partner of The Firefly Gallery, Northport. This essay is excerpted from her speech at the Celebrate Achievement Benefit.

In a New Light AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM 1870–1940 WORKS FROM THE BANK OF AMERICA COLLECTION MAY 25 TO AUGUST 18

Robert Emmett Owen, Flag Day, not dated, oil on canvas, Bank of America Collection

Be sure to see this sweeping survey of American Impressionism with the new exhibition In a New Light: American Impressionism 1870-1940. The exhibition has been loaned through Bank of America’s Art in our Communities® program.

The show provides a historical context for the evolution of American Impressionism, beginning with majestic Hudson River School landscapes, to French Impressionist-inspired subjects, and finally to 20th-century modernist trends.

In a New Light traces the emergence of an American style of painting, and explores how artists interpreted American daily life in rural, maritime, and urban spaces using Impressionistic techniques: brisk brushstrokes, a vibrant palette, and atmospheric effects.

“Bank of America is pleased to support The Heckscher Museum of Art and honored to share works from our art collection with the Long Island community,” said Bob Isaksen, Long Island Market President. “As one of the largest corporate supporters of arts and culture programming, we believe in the power of the arts to help communities thrive, educate, inspire, enrich societies, and create greater cultural understanding.”

In a New Light includes works from more than 50 artists, many who depicted scenes of Long Island and New York City.

MUSEUMS ON US® The Museum is pleased to participate in Bank of America’s Museums on Us® program. Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, and U.S. Trust cardholders receive free admission on the first full weekend of every month.

LONG ISLAND’S

BEST YOUNG ARTISTS

AT THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM APRIL 6 TO MAY 19 Long Island’s Best, now in its 23rd year, is the flagship of the Museum’s education programs. This juried exhibition is the only one of its kind on Long Island that provides students the unparalleled opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a prominent museum, and to be featured in a full-color exhibition catalog. Museum visitors are treated to exceptional artwork from talented high school students. The Long Island’s Best experience begins with students visiting the Museum where

they interact with staff educators to discuss works on view. Each student then chooses a work of art as an inspiration piece. They go on to create an original artwork and write an Artist’s Statement explaining their creative process. The 80 works on view in the 2019 event were selected from almost 400 entries from more than 60 participating high schools across Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Jurors for the exhibition are Lisa Chalif, Curator at the Museum, and guest juror Robyn Cooper, Adjunct Professor of Art, Adelphi University. “Long Island’s Best connects the experience of viewing art in the museum to the making of it. Students get the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the creative process from the initial conceptualization of an idea through executing it,” said Cooper. “At the end, students emerge with a deep appreciation for the arts, and a prestigious exhibition. They will have taken an artistic journey.”

Rico Ford, a graduate of Valley Stream Central HS, was the Visitor’s Choice winner for Long Island’s Best 2018. He is currently enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

Visitors can see all of the artwork submitted to the juried competition on a digital display in the galleries. Mitchells, the Huntington-based department store on Main Street, will showcase select student art from Long Island’s Best in their display windows in May.

A TRIBUTE TO

Senator Carl L. Marcellino The Heckscher Museum recognizes New York State Senator Carl L. Marcellino for his long-time support of the Museum and its mission. Senator Marcellino served in the Senate from 1995 to 2018, representing the Towns of Huntington, Oyster Bay, and the city of Glen Cove. Throughout his public service, Marcellino advocated for the Museum’s work in arts education. In addition, Senator Marcellino has been instrumental in preserving The Heckscher Museum building. The Museum opened in 1920 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1985). His appreciation of the Museum as a symbol of Long Island’s cultural heritage resulted in funds for the 2007 restoration and safety upgrades of the building’s interior. The Museum is proud to announce it was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Dormitory Authority of New York

WALT WHITMAN HS STUDENT HONORS A HECKSCHER ARTIST

Walt Whitman student Danielle Henneborn

A chance conversation about a family friend’s classmate led Danielle Henneborn, a Walt Whitman High School student, on a mission. The casual mention of Jeffrey Lundstedt, a 1960 Walt Whitman graduate, uncovered his accomplishments as a high school artist, an athlete, and class president. Henneborn also learned that Lundstedt was a graduate of Pratt Institute, a Peace Corps volunteer, and that his art was included in the Museum’s Permanent Collection! Henneborn canvassed the school’s archives for more information. She uncovered newspaper articles that reported Lundstedt’s

Tucked in a yearbook, she discovered a brochure for a 1968 memorial exhibition at the Museum highlighting 27 pieces of Lundstedt’s artwork. A Newsday review of the exhibition noted, “[Lundstedt’s] pictures have about them the movement, bold distortion and intensity of emotion which characterizes expressionist art.”

Working with the school administration, Hanneborn hopes to create a memorial to honor Lundstedt and other alumni who perished in Vietnam. She also wanted to honor his memory as an artist. Images of Lundstedt’s artwork and story were featured in the Walt Whitman High School Festival of the Arts on February 7, incidentally the same day that Lundstedt died in 1968. “I’m an artist too, and I wanted Jeffrey to be recognized and remembered,” said the senior, who is a member of the Art Honor Society, and plans to pursue the arts in college. Ten of Lundstedt’s paintings are in the Mu-

What is Impressionism? IMPRESSIONISM FUN An easy and fun way to remember the important qualities of Impressionism.

E VERYDAY LIFE L IGHT B RUSHWORK O UTDOOR W EATHER Impressionism is an art movement that emerged in 1870s France. It rejected the rigid rules of the beaux-arts (fine arts) tradition. Impressionist artists celebrated everyday life and explored new ways to observe and interpret their subjects. These revolutionary artists headed outside to paint en plein air using visible brush strokes to capture changing qualities of light, weather, and the passage of time. DID YOU KNOW The portability of paint tubes was integral to Impressionist artists’ painting en plein air. Portrait painter John G. Rand invented the paint tube in 1841. The artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir said, “Without tubes of paint, there would have been no Impressionism.” Tubed paints are portable and offer greater variety of colors, allowing painters to make spontaneous color choices.

HOW TO LOOK AT ART WITH CHILDREN Visiting the Museum with children? Our educators have great suggestions for engaging them. Let the child choose what works of art they would like to look at. This will give them ownership over the experience. Start by asking open-ended questions, such as: What do you see? What more can you find? How does this artwork make you feel? Ask follow-up questions to delve deeper, such as: What do you see that makes you say that? This type of question will help young visitors look more closely and think analytically about what they are seeing. As you look at art together, compare and contrast different pieces. What is the same? What is different? Which is their favorite and why? The Museum offers Family Activity Guides, a “Create Your Own” Station, and a Digital Action Painter that kids of all ages can enjoy. An engaging experience will expand a child’s critical thinking and creative powers.
