Heckscher Museum can provide the spark. And, by including the Museum in your longterm plans, you will achieve the goals that are important to you.
Join the Visionaries A planned gift can be designated for any amount. If you have included the Museum in your plans, please let us know!

My first experience with the Heckscher was a field trip in my senior year. I had never been to an art museum before. I was absolutely amazed by everything I saw and learned. My experience with the museum has changed the way I see myself in this world. RICO FORD
ADOPT A WORK OF ART Winifred F. Baim has donated to the Adopt a Work of Art program to conserve Ira Jean Belmont’s A Color-Music Expression of an Excerpt from Richard Wagner’s ‘Prelude to Lohengrin’, 1933. As lifelong musician – she is a graduate of The Eastman School of Music – and the daughter of an artist, the artwork appealed to both her musical roots, and as a colorful and vibrant work of art. Baim was first introduced to The Heckscher Museum through her granddaughter, who was then in the fourth grade. “She had gone on a school trip, and came home to tell us that we had to go the Museum,” said Baim. She learned about the Adopt a Work of Art program in the Museum magazine. “I thought it was a great idea and it made me appreciate the Museum even more,” she noted. “I was so pleased when I saw the completed work. The conservation brought out so many details.” Conservator Christina Zuccari of Moro Studio, Inc., removed dirt and yellowed varnish layers from the surface, performed minor inpainting, and added a protective coating to the pigments. Zuccari carefully removed the canvas from its existing stretcher support, relaxing it to resolve buckling. She reinforced all edges, and then remounted the canvas to a new stretcher. A list of works available for conservation can be found at heckschercollection.org under the Adopt a Work tab. A donation is tax deductible. Questions about the Visionaries and Adopt a Work of Art? Please contact Deborah Johnson, Deputy Director & Director of Development, 631.380.3229 ext. 708 or Johnson@Heckscher.org.

Museum News
A SEASON OF ANNIVERSARIES Dear Friends, Pandemic conditions in 2020 necessitated the postponement of the centennial year exhibition, The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100: Tracing History, Inspiring the Future. I am pleased to convey that the exhibition opens June 5! Please make time to enjoy this fascinating overview of the organization’s first one hundred years revealed through the breath and depth of the Museum’s impressive collection. In addition to the spectacular display of tulips in Heckscher Park, spring has
long signaled Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this high school arts education program is as inspiring as ever. Teaching through virtual platforms this past year did not curb the enthusiasm of the students, teachers, and schools. Read about these milestones in this issue and register to visit the Museum in what promises to be a sensational exhibition season.

MUSEUM ACQUISITIONS CELEBRATE WOMEN ARTISTS The Heckscher Museum of Art has acquired new artwork from two leading women artists: Stella Waitzkin and Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso. “These acquisitions strengthen the Museum’s collection and affirm our commitment to giving a voice to diverse audiences,” said Curator Karli Wurzelbacher. Stella Waitzkin (1920−2003) began creating art in the 1950s while living in Great Neck, Long Island. She is best known for her sculptures and installations. Waitzkin cast old, leather-bound volumes in resin as single objects that became elements of larger installations, including freestanding shelves, small bookcases, or entire library walls. These pieces of art made her one of only a few female “environment” builders. Waitzkin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 1995. The Museum will acquire 16 pieces from her Estate. Gabriela Gonzalez Dollosso is a contemporary figure painter with deep art historical knowledge. The Museum acquired five of the works in her series "Homage Odes". The artworks take the form of illuminated manuscripts inspired by historical female artists. A number of “Homage Odes” were part of Dellosso’s solo exhibition at the Museum in 2019, A Brush with HerStory, where Dellosso paid tribute to great female painters from the Renaissance through the modern era. “These works allow us to insert these important women artists into the narrative that we are already able to tell with the permanent collection,” noted Wurzelbacher. Above: Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso, Homage Ode: Rachel Ruysch, 2018, mixed media on paper. Museum Purchase. The work will be on view in The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100.

The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100 commemorates the fascinating people, art, and events that have shaped the thriving Museum during its first century. Brimming with masterworks and historical objects from the permanent collection, the exhibition takes visitors from the original collection donated in 1920 to the exhibitions and acquisitions that have shaped the Museum since. The exhibition transforms the galleries, some with “salon-style” displays from floor to ceiling, ensuring that more of the Museum’s impressive collection can be seen. Grouped chronologically by acquisition year, the exhibition pauses at important “moments” in the Museum’s story.
NATURE AND ART BEAUTIFULLY COMBINED JUNE 12 AND 13 Art in Bloom returns to The Heckscher Museum of Art! The Museum is partnering with four Garden Club of America chapters to bring this multisensory experience to life: North Country Garden Club (Oyster Bay), North Suffolk Garden Club (Stony Brook), South Side Garden Club (Bay Shore), and Three Harbors Garden Club (Cold Spring Harbor). Teams from each club will create 12 floral designs inspired by works of art in the exhibition The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100. Visitors can experience Art in Bloom by registering for timed tickets on June 12 and 13. Reserve your tickets now at Heckscher.org/visit/reopening/ or call 631-380-3230.

An exciting virtual lecture series with topics exploring floral design, gardening, art, and architecture coincides with the event, creating greater connections for visitors between the natural world and the arts. They include Beyond Gatsby: The Fabled Gardens of Long Island’s Gold Coast; Native Gardening & Audubon’s Plants for Birds Program, and The Gardens of Downton Abbey. EXHIBITION MARKS 25 YEARS OF EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT ARTWORK ON VIEW APRIL 17 TO MAY 23 Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum, the most prestigious juried competition for Long Island high school students, marks 25 years of celebrating the talents and achievements of young artists. This milestone comes during a year when in-person teaching was not possible, necessitating the transition to live virtual classes. Museum educators involved students with inspiring experiences through in-depth study and discussion about works of art. Each student then selected a work of art as their inspiration piece. They went on to create an original artwork and wrote an artist’s statement explaining their creative process.
who holds an MFA from Queens College and is represented by Praxis Art Gallery, New York City. “I am eager to see the students’ approaches to creating,” said Misla, adding, “Long Island’s Best can impact a young artist in a transformative way.” In addition to the five-week exhibition in the galleries, images of the Long Island’s Best student artworks, their inspiration artworks, and artist statements will be featured on Heckscher.org in April.
Student submissions were received representing schools across Suffolk and Nassau Counties. The exhibition will include approximately 70 works of art. Jurors for the 2021 exhibition are Karli Wurzelbacher, Curator, and artist Melissa Misla, guest juror. Misla is a New York artist

AN ARTIST INSPIRES THE NEXT GENERATION As an artist and dedicated supporter of Long Island’s Best, Elizabeth Strong-Cuevas’ work and inspiration reaches a broad audience. Her bronze sculpture, “Jazz,” Lightning I, is part of the Museum’s permanent collection and was recently featured in the Locally Sourced exhibition. In 2020, this sculpture inspired the work of Long Island’s Best artist Alice Katok, North Shore High School, who wrote: “As I looked at Strong-Cuevas’ sculpture, I was inspired by her use of simple shapes to create an abstract, yet detailed form…. My goal was to illustrate an emotion or feeling in an abstract way, just like I think the artist did.” “Jazz”, Lightning I also inspired an episode of the Heckscher@Home Kids Edition series, led by Lead Museum Educator Lisa Sayedi, which introduced children to three-dimensional works of art.
