Exhibitions

JANUARY 20 TO APRIL 24, 2022

Richard Mayhew, Pescadero, 2014, oil on canvas. Museum Purchase: Town of Huntington Art Acquisition Fund.

RENOWNED ARTIST CELEBRATED CLOSE TO HOME The Heckscher Museum of Art features the work of artist Richard Mayhew in a solo exhibition, the first to be organized so close Amityville, NY, where the acclaimed artist was raised. More than two dozen vibrant paintings and works on paper created over the past six decades explore how Mayhew reimagined nineteenth and twentieth-century American landscape painting. The exhibit reveals his uniquely personal style and his perspectives about African American and Native American history and culture. Coinciding with the exhibition, The Heckscher Museum is proud to announce

the acquisition of Richard Mayhew’s painting, Pescadero, 2014. The Museum already holds a number of Mayhew’s lithographs. “The purchase of Richard Mayhew's Pescadero is an important springboard into the Museum's second century,” said Curator Karli Wurzelbacher. “We are honored to have the opportunity to share the stunning and thoughtful work of this major Long Island-born artist with our audiences. Mayhew's work will allow us to tell a more complete and compelling story about the histories of abstraction and landscape painting in America.” The exhibition will feature works of art on loan from public and private collections including The Petrucci Family Founda-

tion Collection of African-American Art; National Academy of Design, New York; Hudson River Museum; and ACA Galleries, New York.

My paintings are based on improvisational internalized creative experiences. I paint the essence of nature, always seeking the unique spiritual mood of the landscape. RICHARD MAYHEW

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES FOR LONG ISLAND CREATIVES

Jeremy Dennis, The Moon Person Ascends, 2014, digital dye-sublimation print on aluminum. Museum Purchase.

MOONSTRUCK: LUNAR ART FROM THE COLLECTION JANUARY 20 TO SEPTEMBER 18, 2022 Drawn from the Museum’s Collection, Moonstruck presents a broad range of artwork inspired by the moon and moonlight. From the nineteenth century to the present, artists have gravitated to the moon for reasons scientific, mythic, and symbolic. These celestial artworks explore our enduring fascination with the moon in all its phases.

One of the highlights is the newly acquired Moon Person Ascends by artist Jeremy Dennis. Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton, NY. In his work, he explores indigenous identity, culture, and assimilation. "The Moon Person Ascends gives visual form to a Native American story, attributed to the Biloxi Nation, that accounts for the moon's craters and phases,” noted Curator Karli Wurzelbacher. “Dennis relates this historic myth through the relatively new medium of digital photography." As Dennis has explained: "The process behind the camera is a combination of theater, cinema, and painterly approaches." Also on view in Moonstruck – and new to the collection – is Alison Saar’s Reapers, 2021. “The work is visually striking,” said Wurzelbacher. “It is embedded in history, while remaining mysterious and a bit surreal.”
