The Board of Trustees of The Heckscher Museum is proud to recognize two remarkable women whose actions and philanthropy have improved the lives of so many people on Long Island and throughout the region. For the Museum’s Centennial Year, we honor Nancy Rauch Douzinas and Patricia J. Petersen. Through their love of art and their philanthropy, Andrea B. and Peter D. Klein have been an integral part of the Museum for many years. As exhibition sponsors – currently for The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100 – the Kleins have helped bring fascinating artwork and artists to the public. They have also sponsored the publication of several exhibition catalogues which have shared new scholarship with broader audiences. Andrea and Peter have gifted works of art from their own collection or provided funds to purchase works deemed important for the Museum’s collection. In addition, they recognize the need to care for objects in the collection so that works of art are able to be exhibited at the Museum and lent to other institutions. To that end, they have spearheaded the conservation of 13 works of art. Their generosity is evident throughout The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100. For example, conservation funds stabilized the oldest painting in the exhibition, Lucas ‘The Elder’ Cranach’s Virgin, Child, St. John the Baptist and Angels, 1534 (left). Also on view is Man Ray’s La Maison (The House), 1931, one in a series of 10 rayographs in the portfolio Életricité purchased by the Kleins for the Museum in 2007.

“The collection is the epitome of what an art museum is all about. It must be cared for, enhanced with new acquisitions, researched, interpreted, and shared with the world.” ANDREA B. AND PETER D. KLEIN Andrea B. and Peter D. Klein.

Museum News

THE LASTING IMPACT OF LONG ISLAND’S BEST As part of the 25th anniversary celebration of Long Island’s Best, The Heckscher Museum invited alumni to share how the program shaped their lives and careers. Responses from working artists, therapists, graphic artists, musicians, and scientists confirmed that art remains an important part of their lives no matter their chosen profession, with many offering advice to the next crop of Long Island’s Best students. “My experience being in Long Island’s Best exhibitions gave me a glimpse of what it feels like to be in the company of other passionate and talented artists. I felt inspired and excited to keep working. It gave me the confidence to have an artistic voice and not be afraid to show it. I remember feeling so excited being at the opening exhibition and feeling that spark of joy and pride within myself.” – Nina Miller, Long Island’s Best, 2015. “Don't let a non-art career stop you from creating. Creativity has followed me throughout my career, informing my work as a scientist and allowing me to express my passions through a diverse set of mediums. I've created graphics and designed websites for my research, published my comics in comic anthologies, and illustrated art (both personal and commissions for others) to express my love for space exploration.” – Caroline Juang, 2013. “I'm a research associate at the Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice at Georgetown University and I'm also a graduate student in English, with a concentration in contemporary poetry. Art is inseparable from emotion, and emotion is just as important as logic. So art is always a good reason.” – RK Fauth, 2009. “The opportunity to participate in Long Island’s Best was the beginnings of my career as an artist. I was passionate about art

growing up and took several art classes in high school. Participating in Long Island’s Best really did shape who I am as an artist today. This was a great experience to grow and expand my skills as an artist so early.” – Emily Martin, 2014. “I was shocked that I won third place in my year of Long Island’s Best; it showed me how to be and feel like an artist, and allowed me to see how much potential I have. On opening night, being surrounded by family, peers, teachers, and mentors, I felt like I could truly see this happening again in my years ahead. Making art everyday even in the tiniest of ways, makes you an artist at heart with a talent and a drive like no other. Do it for your own happiness. Connect with others through your art. Create love and a community. Create passion.” – Crisoula Lazaridis, 2015. “I teach [music], last year I founded and directed "Collaborative Clarinet in Concert Exhibition" which featured new works for clarinet by composers from Mannes School of Music and New York Youth Symphony alongside artwork inspired by the original compositions created by artists from Parsons School of Design. This project’s aim was to unite the broader arts community working together as a team of artists welcoming each other to create a one-of-a-kind performance experience.” – Francesca Gray, 2011. “Follow your passions, they can take you anywhere! I wanted to go to art school and ended up becoming an adolescent therapist utilizing art therapy! Let your passions take you to new places.” – Samantha Murphy, 2012.

Exhibitions

NOW ON VIEW Paintings by Odili Donald Odita and Robert G. Carter were recently accepted into the permanent collection and are on view for the first time in The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100. “These dynamic new acquisitions advance the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our collection and in our programming. They allow us to tell more complete stories about contemporary American art. As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Museum’s founding, these paintings invite us to see and interpret our historic collection in new ways.” – Curator Karli Wurzelbacher. Nigerian-born artist Odita grew up in Ohio and lives in Philadelphia. He is best known for his large-scale canvases with kaleidoscopic patterns and vibrant hues, which he uses to reflect the human condition. “The interaction of Western modernism and African culture is a dynamic subject in Mr. Odita’s paintings,” wrote Holland Cotter in a 2001 New York Times review. “He has found a way to give the topic a visual form that is both intellectually cogent and self-sufficiently beautiful. The works already look like classics.”

VISIT OFTEN: THERE IS MORE TO SEE! About 20 works of art in The Heckscher Museum Celebrates 100 will rotate in September so visitors can discover even more of the Museum’s collection. Works by Odili Donald Odita, Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso, and Stella Waitzkin will be in the first rotation; Robert G. Carter and Samuel Colman will be on view beginning September 20. Go to Heckscher.org to plan your visit.

Robert G. Carter’s mixed media work, Mama Taught Me Piano and Much More, 2007, is a stellar example of the artist’s subjects that depict connections between the generations. In the 1970s, Carter was a member of the “Huntington Group” which included Stan Brodsky, Stanley Twardowicz, Lillian Dodson, and Alfred Van Loen, among others. In 1973, he was the first African-American artist to have a solo exhibition at The Heckscher Museum. An art professor at Nassau Community College for more than 50 years, Carter served as a judge for the 2018 Long Island Biennial.
